The Embassy Theatre was where "This is New Zealand" first screened once it had finished its six months at the 1970 Worlds Fair in Osaka in Japan. It was seen by around 4,000,000 people in Japan and after being successfully screened in the Embassy in Wellington, it was the screened in Christchurch, Dunedin and finally in Auckland. As it needed three 35mm projectors, it was expensive to screen and was not taken to any other cities in New Zealand. This is about to change however as it has now been digitised and the goal is to once again screen it at the 800 seat Embassy in Wellington, after it has been screened in Miramar's Roxy Cinema. Fish and Chips at the Seaview Takeaways on Lyall Parade in Lyall Bay take a lot of beating and love your energy by the way.
This is super interesting. I had no idea. I am currently living in Japan and my boyfriend’s grandfather was a volunteer worker at the Osaka World Fair 1970. He lives just a few small cities over from the Expo City mall (where the event was held).
Watching your videos, I'm realising Wellington really does have the best mix of everything to offer in NZ. It's small, but big enough that you have everything you need.
It’s amazing how my old home town has changed! When I lived there from 1969 to 1981 it was a boring bureaucratic place, grey and staid. Then along came a new mayor Michael Fowler who lit a fire under the place. Within a couple of years the arts communities thrived, street sculptures were installed in Cuba street (you have no idea thevUPROAR when those water buckets in Cubs St were installed!) The city has blossomed like a flower since then. It is exciting to see. A big question ... did your burger have beetroot in it?
@@Kiwiamericans haha I guess not. I’ve spent most of my life working and interacting in various ways with Americans. My brother lives in Indiana and my late wife’s sister lived in upstate New York. For a little over 20 years I’ve been doing a weekly radio show that’s syndicated in the eastern states of the USA. Cultural differences are a constant source of fascination and amusement for me, and I think for my listeners too Right now I’m trying to unravel the mysteries of what Southerners call “collard greens” and also why some people pronounce “Missouri” ending with an “Ee” sound and others end it with an “ah” sound As to the beetroot in burgers question, you’re in good company. In 60 years I’ve never encountered an American who thinks putting beetroot in a burger is a good idea - or for that matter who would even try it
I was so happy to see the water buckets in your video. Even if they weren’t tipping and filling. Re beetroot, I love it but I like wearing shirts that don’t have beetroot stains on them.
Thats an awesome review on your your top 10 hot spots in Welly... Just seeing the enthusiasm on your face really enjoying the Wellington lifestyle in NZ..Will have to come down from Auckland to and check these places out. Thanks again.
The Aro Valley fish and chip shop is one of my top fish and chip shops in the city! If you like mushrooms try their deep fried mushrooms they’re so yummy
@@Kiwiamericans Mittens was (now transferred to Auckland) a very famous, friendly & gregarious cat that freely roamed the Wgtn CBD. The locals and shop owners all loved him. Had his own website and was given the 'key to the city'.
Another cool thing to do in Wellington is the cable car. If your looking for something to do, or you have kids (they love it!) It is a very fun activity. Search it up, you won't regret it :)
Welly has more cafes and restaurants per capita than Manhattan and the reason why is the weather. I've never been to cafes so much as when I'm there as I'm trying to get out of the wind and cold!
I grew up in newlands then my first job was at ANZ headquarters on lampton quay. I remember seeing jaws at the embassy i was underage but we were with russell a family friend so got in. Best places to visit you missed out the gardens exspecialy when they had a festival there. The weta workshop in miramar , i liked to go to the beaches around miramar too but you always had to watch out for the wind. I saw many games of cri ket at the basin and rugby at athlette park. When i was working in my lunch times i would go for walks along the water that was cool and also to the library.
I looooooove Scopa, when I worked on Taranaki Street that was our Hot Chocolate fix, daily, and when I come home to Welly, that is my jam. Love your recommendations ❤️
Okay.. some good places. Do you ever get out to Miramar, Kilbirnie. The Roxy theatre is ten times better than the Embassy theatre and the restaurant there is even better. Their theme nights are a highlight; next are the cafes ... again far far better than some of the ones you mentioned - Maranui cafe, right on Lyall Bay beach, Chocolate Fish Cafe OMG the best seafood sandwiches in the world, The Gypsy cafe for the best coffee and so many in Lyall Bay Kilbirnie but one that has the best salads, vegetarian and Christmas Cakes - Queen Sally’s Diamond Deli. Many more but that should tickle your fancy!!
Highly agree with a lot of your recommendations! As a Wellingtonian, Chocolate Fish Cafe is amazing! I remember Roxy cinema did a 2 day and overnight screening of every single Harry Potter movie before the final movie was released at the same time. Everyone was allowed to dress up, there were bean bags, and themed snacks, such an experience and the cinema quality is amazing.
The best cinema in Wellington by a massive amount is the cinema at Park Road Post. Unfortunately it is not open to the public but must be one of the best in the world and although the big theatre at the Roxy is terrific, it is not in the same class as the Park Road Post one.
Haven’t lived in Wellington for years, Chocolate Fish cafe in Miramar was always great. There was an interesting cafe in Island Bay with art work made out of thousands of slices of toasted bread in multiple shades of brown. There was the Mona Lisa, Marilyn Monroe, politicians etc it was incredibly well done. No trip is complete without going up the cable car, (incredible views) walking down through the Botanical Gardens, The Lady Norsewood Rose Garden, through the Boulton St Pioneer Cemetary (heretage roses) and back to theCBD
I've never understood the fuss about Te Papa. The gift shop is good but it's a museum mostly geared towards children. I just look at the art on the top floor and the earthquake simulator is good for those that have little experience of a real one, but that's about it.
Been to Wellington a number of times love Wellington. But am a kiwi from Christchurch so please do a video on Christchurch. Happy to give you some recommentions ❤️
As a former Wellingtonian, I can concur with your choices. The big advantage is that the CBD is very small (especially compared to Auckland). It is possible to go to all of these areas by walking only. Exceptions would include going to the Weta Cave in Miramar.
Love Gorilla Burger but my fave burger joint is definitely Soul Shack. They specialise in hot chicken sandwiches and it’s so good, I made the mistake of getting their highest heat level and proceeded to contemplate my life for the remainder of that day.
Hi there. Loving your videos about living in Wellington it is great to see Wellington so well advertised. Have you been to Lamason on the corner of Bond and Lombard Street? Also are you aware that Expressoholic closed down recently after 30+ years.
Hi Tara love your take on places to go whilst in Wellington, now living in auckland I still love and miss Wellington, how do your kids feel about wellington or nz in general would they rather the u.s?
My favourite restaurant we visit each time we are in Wellington is Apache. We also watch all our films at Roxy Theatre in Miramar. Also rate all your top ten places - I love all the spots down Eva street, namely: Fix n Fogg (peanut butter - YUM!), Lashings (amazing brownies) and Leeds Street Bakery (salted Caramel Cookies are delicious!)
I remember Espressoholic from the late 80's, early 90's. It was at a different place then; I think it was Willis Street, but I'm not sure. Back then it had super loud music, but I'm sure it's quieter now.
Ah, Te Papa - a national museum founded on the backs of every other museum in NZ. When it was set up by the government of the day, part of the law founding it was that Te Papa could demand *any* part of *any* collection in the country. The curators were employed before the museum opened and they were paid to tour the country's museums and then they issued requisitions for all the items they wanted. They basically stripped all the other public-owned museums around the country of their best exhibits - and some of them have never even been on display, they just stripped them so they had it and then put the items in storage. They still periodically issue acquisition orders and take items from other museums around the country. Not Te Papa's finest hour and a reason that it is distrusted by most public museums around the country to this day.
I feel that the longer you stay an acclimatize in New Zealand then the more out of touch you will become with back home. Have you ever considered living in Melbourne Australia for a while.
