    You have an uncanny ability to turn what might seem a boring subject for non-yachting folks into an interesting one. This makes you a very good teacher.

      Hello David. This subject may even be considered boring for yacht crew; however, it's one of the most important so I try to make it as interesting as possible. It's a challenge I face every month, putting together drills on board that are varied and engaging. I'm happy to hear that you think my style is working, and thank you as always for commenting.

    Our detectors at work went off several times a day. Eventually we figured out what was wrong. The steam from the dishwashers.... We had to switch from smoke detectors to heat detectors there. It's tough in the kitchen since it has both heat and smoke. At least we got plenty of fire safety practice and evacuation practice.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for sharing this, SailorYuki. Combined heat/smoke detectors were originally installed in the pantries on this yacht; however, they also had to be changed out for heat only because they kept being activated by the on-demand boiling water taps!

    Another awesome video, and David Geer (viewer) said it well, no need to repeat, so I will ask a question instead.
    Do the alarm tests disturb the neighboring yachts, if so, are they warned prior to testing like the crew?

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Frank, and great question. The only alarm that would be heard on neighbouring yachts is the full fire alarm. If we were going to test it for a longer period of time, or even test it repeatedly, I would inform the other yachts. Similarly, when we do a fire drill, dress up the fire team, and start running water hoses, I also let them know.

    • @frankv4271

      @@WorkonaSuperyacht Thank you Matt, I have a few more questions.
      1- Are Owner, Guest and Charter Guest aware/introduced to the Fire Safety Security Protocols?
      2- If so, are there Fire test when these people are on board?
      3- Do they participate?

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад +1

      @Frank V Yes, the owner and guests will be given a safety briefing when they arrive on board. Drills and tests will ideally have been done when there are no guests on board; however, sometimes guests will be on board for so long that a drill or test will become due. In this case, they would be informed that the crew will be conducting a drill or test, so as not to surprise or upset them. They wouldn't be required to take part, but they be interested and want to join in anyway.

      on cruise ships, usually there is a mandatory muster station drill for guests and crew before the boat leaves any united states port on the first day of the cruise. I think it may be required due to united states or international safety regulations and laws.

    Yet another excellent video Matt. One question though. If there was a fire, how would the insurers verify the fire alarm system tests had been carried out? I'm sure this would be a condition of the insurance policy and one of the first things they would check.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Nick, and great question. The fire system checks for each detector and call point are logged in a spreadsheet, which is submitted monthly to our management company. In addition, fire drills are recorded in the Official Log Book. Finally, tests of the fire system must be observed during the annual class and flag survey, at which point the annual service certificates for the equipment will also be inspected.

    I don't recommend setting the tone to continuous, I'd suggest the normal Apollo Evacuation tone, and in case of a general emergency the Apollo Alert Tone, which I heard is also wired up to the fire alarm.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад

      Thank you for your feedback. We have found this fire alarm tone to be very effective in alerting the crew. Fortunately, this has only been tested as a result of a false alarm! For the general alarm we do use the Apollo Alert Tone (7 short + 1 long blast) as you recommend.

  • @hinesal
    @hinesal 3 года назад +1

    Thanks! Interesting as always. I'm curious, on the far side of the bridge, it looks like there's 3 fire call points on top of each other. Why is that? Or are they for different things?

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Alistair, and great question. There are 3 call points:
      1. Fire alarm (and the one I was testing).
      2. Galley shutdown, which shuts down the ventilation and all of the power to the galley.
      3. General alarm, which uses the same alarm system as for fire, but instead of a continuous buzzer it sounds 7 short + 1 long blast. This is the internationally recognised alarm sequence for a general emergency on board a ship.

    Quick question: what VHF channel(s) do you use for intra ship/crew communication?

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 года назад +2

      Hello Ralf. The radios that we use to communicate with each other on board are UHF. They are programmed to work as a set, and we have nine different channels from which to choose. Each set is programmed to operate on different frequencies, which means there is very little chance of interference between radios on different yachts.
