In 1999, Apostle Richard D. Henton, pastor of Monument of Faith Evangelistic Church, held a program, honoring MAAAAAAANY of Chicago's Gospel pioneers, who were known locally, as well as world-wide. Many of them, such as Doris Sykes of the Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church, rendered selections. Here, she sings her signature song, "The Name of Jesus." Something got a hold to her!! Lol! Go'head!!
My Goodness the year is 2021 and I am a black man 36 years old and I just heard this song- "The Name of Jesus" for the 1st time ever on youtube, sung by the amazing Doris Sykes and lemme tell ya!!!!!!!! I HAVE IT SKY HIGH ON REPEAT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! OH SHE CAN SING UP TO HEAVEN THANK YOU HOLY SPIRIT!!!!! I HOPE SOMEONE CAN SEE THIS AND RESPOND AMEN!!!!!
The LORD delivered me from the gay lifestyle 3 years ago and now I am walking in celibacy, holiness, and purity as the Holy Spirit commands me! I love these old-time gospel singers/songs because they just remind me of the old-time ways when the Black Family was together and stronger... ppl said yes maam no maam yes sir no sir respected their elders even if they didnt agree with them amen!

My mom loved to hear her sing. I remember we search for this song by Ms Doris Sykes for a long time & we finally found her on a cassette tape. I wish my mom was still alive to view this video on RUclips. Just thought about her and pulled it right up on RUclips. Bring back sweet memories of my mom.What a blessing! I love this song! My mother use to lead it after I was baptized at 15 it was taught to me. I am 66 today, and I still love it. One of my favorites.

Her name is Elsa Harris...well-known in Chicago and overseas. She was a member of the Jessy Dixon Singers, Thompson Community Singers, and was also with Paul Simon. She played for various churches over the years, too.

Feeling a special kind of way today. One year ago this week one if my favorite organist, no wait my favorite organist was called from labor to reward. Brother Robert Lamont Jones was a child prodigy that began playing the organ at the age of three my ear. Even though he tied to learn to read music, he could never quite get it. He would take music lessons, but once he heard the song once he could not only play it, but he could transform it. Lamont played for numerous choirs/groups in the DMV area. The name of Jesus was one of his favorite songs.

Doris Sykes was a long-time member of the Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church (Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir), which is still pastored by Rev. Maceo Woods. She can be heard singing lead on just about every album the choir recorded. "The Name of Jesus" was her signature song.
