My spices were my nemesis until I organized them in alphabetical order in a drawer in matching jars a few years ago. My husband first laughed at me for doing this but now he loves it too.

We bought our cabinets 30 years ago, used for $800. Standard golden oak with cathedral doors. Hubbie worked them to fit into the kitchen. I recently changed the hardware and gave them new life.
I love the look of the white and other colors people paint their cabinets . But, living with scratches and scrapes would drive me nuts. And I chose back then a light Grey laminate counter top. So fresh wall paint always makes a nice update and makes me happy.
So now just retired at 65, I'm not investing money in changing what I have. It's.... good enough😊
I would rather use my $$ on fun life stuff!
I enjoy watching your videos Karen! Thank you for them😊

Karen, the red stuff in the little box is saffron. Also , I am older than you and I have turned into a real homebody. We no longer like to go where there is a lot of noise and crowds and I don't entertain like I used to. Don't feel guilty tho, I am at peace and happy in my simplified, organized home. If I had cleaned my whole kitchen and decluttered my spice areas ( I have 2) I would feel real good about it. Love, Cynthia from Texas

The spice area looks wonderful! As others have mentioned, the key to us not buying duplicates and keeping them easily accessible was putting them in alphabetical order. At first, my family thought I had gone nuts (they are NOT micro organizers), but they now really enjoy being able to immediately put their hands on the spice that they are looking for--we keep a plate with the spice blend, salt, and pepper that we use every day on the counter.

I’ve become a home body as well. I’ve spent a great of time on adding flowers to my front yard this year so I go out on my front porch more and more and just enjoy my slow gentle living. Even put up 2 hummingbird feeders yesterday. I’m totally not missing the hustle bustle. 😃 And yes just cleaning up kitchen and doing the spice cabinet would be enough for the day. (looks great!) I’m finding I get more done if I pace myself and slow down. Enjoy it! ❤❤❤❤❤ Em

I do feel a sense of accomplishment on completing small tasks. I'm really taking a page from your book by going slow, esp in the heat. I took down and vacuumed one valance and cleaned my car seat where the pup had an accident as she was SO excited to go to the beach. I now get to wash the seat cover. Slow and steady 🌻🍄

Great observations, Karen! It's awesome that you're being mindful of how social media is impacting and attempting to influence you. There are certain things that need attention every day like tidying up, spot cleaning, dishes, and usually the laundry. Other than that, I just do individual cleaning tasks here and there because whole room/whole house cleans are overwhelming, painful, exhausting, miserable, and overall a negative experience for me! I'm a decade younger and probably do half as much as you so don't feel bad!

I'm turning 46 this year and have been a home body for many years already. I love being in my home space and spending my time quietly. I've recently taken up learning to play piano which has been a lifelong-desire for me and am even knitting my daughter a scarf (my first knitting project ever). I also have my two fury companions, Manuka (dog) and Millie (cat) Sometimes I think I should get out more, but I find it so tiring (the introvert in me).. especially on top of working full time and being a single mum. The time gets so filled up so quickly.

Since a lot of your holiday baking keeps getting lost, it might be worth having a little bin that you could grab and pull down all at once for those spices and things in particular. Just like how you have it for your first aid supplies.

I do this: when I have an extra spice, I mark on the bottle "extra available " or "extra (where it is - behind". ) I use masking tape and marker but could probably just use sharpie on the container. 😊

I started using them again 🥴 since son started living them because he like to use them. But I’d rather not. We got use to even using small hand towels as napkins at diner to wipe our hands etc. I buy bulk on things like paper towels because it’s cheaper but then I have to find a place to store them.

The defect in the paint on the spice cabinet looks like it's from heat. Do you use your crockpot, rice cooker, etc. there? Anything that produces steam or heat? I always use those things on my island for the same reason. Great work. Thanks for sharing! I'm also more drawn to calm everyday content.

Karen, not sure if this helps, I am a homebody too. And a while back I stopped following accounts on FB and Instagram that made me feel like I had FOMO for no reason or that made me feel less. once I only kep those near and dear and accounts that are more aligned with who I am as a person and who make my mental health feel great it has made a tremendous difference. I have never looked back from it.

Good job on cleaning out the spices. Karen, do you really use that many on a consistent basis? I say this because I know so many people who buy spices on a whim, or for recipes they hardly ever make, use them once or twice and then never use them again. 😂 I deliberately prevented this by making a note of which herbs and spices I used consistently and only buying those. Therefore I generally have only about twenty jars full at the most at any one time, not including pepper and salt (although we don’t use salt much). Btw I think it might be a good idea to keep the liner in the cabinet, because if any of the red or yellow spices spill they could stain the wood. Also, I think the cabinet paint is probably peeling due to the steam rising from pans on your stove or from your crockpot when you take the lids off, as you place that directly underneath. To help the paint stay there longer, you could paint a very thin layer of clear nail varnish in the cracks, make sure if you do this to wipe the excess nail varnish off the paint itself otherwise it will yellow the paint, you only want it in the cracks.

I put my spices in half pint jars with lids from Parmesan cheese. I label the tops and keep them in the top drawer where I prepare food. The ones I use most gradually end up in the front. I keep baking items (including cinnamon, nutmeg, etc) with my making items so this drawer is only for cooking. I buy most in bulk so I always decant to these jars but I can use extra jars for other things.
I don’t have a huge variety so they are used while fresh and also they don’t make a mess.

The paint problem on your upper cabinet is probably because that cabinet is near the stove. Steam rises up whenever you boil water etc. Over time, paint bubbles from the heat and the steam. Don't know what you can do to stop it. You might be able to sand it in place, and paint iver that one board.

  • @Firefly_18

Karen, the dates on the spices are best by dates, not expiration dates. You can safely use them for months after the best by date. What happens is they might loose potency but even that takes a loong time. Spices are expensive, so it might be worth it to check google to see how long are they still good after the best by date.
