A bit late to the party but, I finally understand the idea of energy transfer. Shorter leader for throwing 4 inch clousers on my 8wt in the surf for halibut in So Cal. Previous leaders were way to long. I too am a fan of the salt water mono!! Thank you !
Gunnar, great as always. I think abrasion resistance has two separate factors. Structure like trees, logs, coral vs a fishes mouth. I just returned from Campeche and hooked up to 35-40 baby/juvenile tarpon per day - no doubt that the fluro is better in the mouth of these fish. Every fish on mono - cut off 3 inches of mono and retie. Fluro cut of 3 inches and retie on every 4-5 fish.By the way - all of those fish were on the fly which picture I sent you - please feel free to use it as your own. It is not too often that the guide takes a picture of my fly - but that is what happened in Campeche and also Rio Lagartos, the colors of the fly were mine but the design, profile and technique were yours.
Right on , we’re not throwing wooly buggers . I see a lot of people throwing 9’ tapered leaders and wonderingly why they don’t turn over there 5” Dolly Llama . Very beneficial video .
Very nice info vid! About mono abrasion resistance, I’m not so sure it’s better than fluoro. It is more flexible though, so it doesn’t snap so easily under tension. It’s way easier to break fluoro when the hook gets stuck behind a rock or a log because it’s more brittle and doesn’t like to bend as much. A sharp rock whittles through mono more easily though because it’s softer.
Good intentions but you don’t know very much. You might have convinced some people you do but, nah. You have provided bad advice and I am not talking about different ways to skin the cat or opinions. I have been at this longer than you have been alive. You are young and maybe you will figure things out eventually. Until then, you are leading people down the wrong paths. Oh and learn how to cast!
Pretty harsh critique for a youngster learning the sport and trying to pass it along.. One thing I have noticed is not all of the old stuff was perfect and new ideas are being tried everyday. Instead of being a horses butt, why don’t you offer some insights into your extensive experience and knowledge? Better yet, do like Gunnar and do you’re own RUclips channel and show us the right path.
Thanks Gunnar, education is always good.

Thanks, I still use your leader formula from one of your earlier videos. Works well for me
You’re a goated fly fisherman, but maybe an even better educator!

Hey man, what is your opinion on twisted leaders? I do all my bass fly fishing with 20 to 30 lb mono twisted leaders. Works awesome for me :D
The SA Bass Taper leaders are also a good choice.
sugar lake and falcon lake are great too

Sure. Elaborate on what?
