  • ABOUT THE CONTEXT OF THIS MOVIE
A common saterday in June 2012. One of the largest trainstations of Germany. What happens now? what trains. It is not really a retrospective, it is about now. Not looking to yesterday.
Point out yesterday: in the nineties the large cargo station was still open. Today it is a lost ruïne. For long trainsets were extreme rare at this station. All turn turned up as engine plus wagons. The introduction in 1991 of the ICE trainsystem did not change this figure huge. Oke some ICE trainsets entered the portt. All trains were run by DB And de facto still in methods refering to the steam era. An era what had it is executive decision tot quit in 1957 (run off period 20 years). Build in the mid fifties the staton breathed and funtioned as a true home of DB untill the early 21th century. Just check video's or photo's over this half century and you feel the strong value about DB still runs trains as in the steam era even when steam was abandonned long ago!
Today Cargo trains at this station are past. Other operatiors came in to serve at regional services. DB itself is split in divisions like cargo, regio and fernverkehr (long distance). Trainsets became the new standard in trains; only some long distance trains not. The glory of DB And the post-steam era is memory. Memories that triggered to a new sort of trains. Commercial served retro trains. Trains of the past. So miss the magnnficent engines like the 110, 216 or 103 series? Sure you will love the MAN railbus that runs in this video. No surprise or incident. A saterday in the summer always includes some retro trains!!! The memory of DB in the (post) steam era is still alive amongst many.
The European Union has brought the final cut tot cargo transports at/around innercities and open access for operators with their decision to execute markets (EU 91/440). It does not function really except to cut costs and operate deep defensive on train transport instead of aggressive competitive what is needed in this post-feel free-joy your car days. Indeed. There is no compettition. Seems so; but is fata morgana. Everything is deliverd on costs and cut costs. Trainsets? cheaper! No express cargo?? Althought the train is cheaper in real costs, the lorry transports wanted to take loss to protect their market ; of whch a large part was easily given away some years ago by DB with a strong fucntioning express network. (stuckgut schnellverkehr f.e.)
This Duisburg movie is not about yesterday. This words paints yesterday,, an era that runs until ca 2005. The move opens up today. Forget yesterday in the mindset now. That is memory. Clear all. Watch. Joy. Look at today. Yesterday will not come back in comming 10 years... But never say never. As modern economic and techinal strategy, demands and research on transport focus on green issues. Such leads to f.e. issues about re-introduction of steamtrains, interregional cargo trains, cargo trams and other steam era-a-like technical issues. Meanwhile the free market turned into a to discus topic, as the parties only seems to be EU governments and banks with their bussines. Exactly the weak giants which has to cut on cosst and has to reconsider about core business. The effects of banks and governments in run off on rail companies are already visible. Meaning companies and techniques will change. So imagine how you will look over 20 or 50 years to this video... Hopefully easily recognized as from the period 2005-2015.
    Greats,

Weer een mooie compilatie Marcel. Het blijft een zeer interessant station om een tijdje rond te kijken.
