The property where these columns will be installed is a self storage facility. This is the same property where you saw this block wall being built • Building A Block Wall
This welding was done with an older model Lincoln buzzbox. The welder is AC only and was purchased used for $150. This is a great place to start if you are interested in welding. Very low investment and you learn some very valuable basics that will help you as you later move to MIG and TIG welding.

Thank you, be safe, and be grateful.
Oh yeah! As a carpenter I needed to know how to build concrete forms, run wire, and install roofing. Eventually I learned to lay blocks, wire houses, weld gates and railings. I weld post and beam saddles now because the home depot kind were too flimsy. I found out being a carpenter, I could branch out to other trades easily because I'm there through out the entire process of the house build. I never went to school for carpentry but I've been one for 15 years and I did get a degree in welding recently through a small community college at night. You are an inspiration. Thank you for your knowledge.
AvE turned me on to your channel awhile back. Subscribed immediately. Haven't regretted it once since.
I enjoy your videos. As a civil engineer it is fun to see the builder apply the "how to" to the equation. We get questions from contractors often along the lines of well just how were you thinking this or that would get constructed. Sometimes all we can say is the builder is the expert in means and methods. Our job is to address the project constraints for loads, configuration, environment etc.. but occasionally we aren't quite sure how something will be built until the contractor gets involved.
I’m about you’re age I love you’re channel totally unique. Many interesting things , for construction people or anyone. I heard you mention your mother was back home being cared for, I wish all the best. I left work to bring my mom back to her home after stroke 3 years ago, and have enjoyed spending this time with her, Peace be with you
I used one of those tombstone welding machines for the first time about a year ago. A guy who I didn't know called me. My welder was in the shop at the time and that is what he had. It works ok and it can't be beat for the price.
Construction and repair job site complexities perfectly articulated and exampled
Whoa, I expressed an interest in welding in the survey and here's a video about it! :D
Haha me too
Me too!
and me
As always another awesome video from a very smart compassionate kind man. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me and all of us.
Scott, as ever, you walk us through the basics like it's falling off a log - well done for the narrative and explanation for an effort that is anything but trivial. Thanks.
The young people need to be encouraged to look at stuff like this.
A little welder tip when you put welding rods in your pocket put the uncoated side in your pocket. That way when you sweat the back side of the rod gets wet and not the starting end. Also if your a heavy sweater like I am by the time you get to the wet end of the rod it should be dry from the heat of the arc!
In drove past your site last week! No one was there it was toward dark! Headed to a friends! We are going to make you an Essential Craftsman Axe with your logo on it! Only making one for you guys not for us to sell !
This morning just working out great , got up early made some coffee arrived to work a little early now im able to watch some E.C ! Have a good one!
This video brought to you by QT (QuikTrip) a local company for me. I love their ice.
I caught that Gadsden rattler on the back gate of that truck, sir.
Kudos to you. I fly mine as well
Tidy welding. In Ireland we'd have to galvanise those and put an angled cap on to let the water run off or they would rot to bits. Arizona has its advantages!
Orbital Tube you're not supposed to weld on galvanized without special respirators. They'll be safe if the guys powder coat or enamel paint them. I would definitely add the angled cap though. Not having that added afterwards is liable to cause trash, bird nests, water, etc pile up on top.
Union Ironworker, you did alright, for an ol’ carpenter.
Vegas , Oregon and now Phoenix... your all over !
I always learn something from you Scot.
Thank you.
Eric
That’s really cool you got to design the gate for Nate
Loving the Wheat Thins product placement. Hope they paid ya a ton for that!
YES! ha
i love my lincoln 225 tombstone, i got mine for 150, came with a bench grinder, helmet, rods, a varmit cage and a hilift jack lol.
Real talk time, QT convenience stores are a thing of beauty aren't they? They're taking it to the next level and make working out of your truck just that little bit more comfortable, also healthy and less boring. Love it.
nice seeing the Lincoln tombstone buzzbox. I inherited a old one and still works like new!
Can you please make a video on the basics of welding. Love your videos, keep up the good work!
Nothing better then quick trip gas station. Didn’t know they where out that way.
My first week working under the company owner, he took me to pick up some 20' lengths of 8" C-channel at the metal yard. I was so in awe of the giant peices being plasma cut that I was almost beaned by the 50 lb dumbbell hanging from the overhead crane chain. I learned to watch my head that day😁
I think I want an Essential Craftsman hoodie.
I like QT and wheat thins, product placement. thanks for the video
I'm going to say it, and I think many would agree - at the end of the evening, your videos are much more enjoyable to watch than any movie theater movie. Pass the popcorn. But I'm also thinking - would there be any advantage to leave the top of the post open (for installation), and fill them (at least partially) with concrete -- much like a bollard?
It’s great to you hear you discuss the different aspects that must be considered in getting a project, or an element of a project, built and installed correctly and with the cooperation of the various subcontractors involved. We may never build or install substantial gate posts, but we will remember your discussion of how to plan it in order to get it done in a timely and cooperative manner.
Wheat thins and QuikTrip are both good choices!
Thoroughly enjoy your videos thank you
Convenience is always worth the extra work! What a chunk of steel. Can't wait to see the gate up and swinging!
Great video, as always. Be nice to see one on welding tips and tricks.
AC welder, well, you can get several good types of rods for that...many guys have done a LOT with these welders before having to move up to a DC welder...
I'm waiting to see that gate...It must be HUGE...!
Wheat thins. Love it!!!!!
Nice project. Some amazing things have been designed on diner napkins, pizza boxes and bench tops, you went high end with actual paper!
Hope you accounted for wind load on the gate when you are opening and closing. If you have a gate opener the wind can over power it.
If I could learn to plan ahead like that, my life would be soo much easier. Great job.
Like this conversational format general wisdom not bogged down with technicals, similar to a fireside chat series.
"Because I designed the darn thing!" Yep!
such a great video but devastated we didnt get to see the finished result!!! :[
I'm sure that's coming in a future video.
Nice video. I think it's great that you can step in and complete tasks that would otherwise become a problem in your project.
Looking real good!
The "ding" at 5:40 had me all sorts of confused. Couldn't figure out who texted me. :) Great video, as per the usual.
Everybody noticing the wheat thins, nobody talking about the QT cup.. OMG with these sponsors! /s
Miller helmet and Lincoln welder, covering all the bases there, Scott? Maybe those lifting eyes will get used many years from now when someone wants to remove those posts. I guess you could always use them to attach the "Grand Opening" banner.
Thanks for the video! It’s worth while talking about how you think ahead and factor in installation while building/fabricating. I certainly could do more of that in my work. Thanks! God bless
Scott,
Nice to see you frequenting one of my favorite places! I love buying material there, then never fail me.
You are the Bob Ross of How to Videos....and I love every minute of it :D
Hey Scott, I saw that you picked up your metal for this episode from IMS. There's another Craftsman in AZ (homesteadeconomics here on RUclips) that is sponsored by them, and I'm sure they'd be willing to do a sponsored arrangement on these videos similar to the way companies have done on your special house build. IMS might not be the cheapest metal supplier in Arizona, but they sure have the best selection.
I appreciate they used a Lincoln ac welder
Is there anything you guys can’t do flawlessly? Perfection once again.
I work for a shop that builds ski lifts, and I've lost count of the number of posts like this I've fabbed up. It's good that you had the metal supplier cut those for you- trying to get an even cut in the field is a real pain in the neck.
Geoff Green Milwaukee metal cutting circular saw. But for a one off the steel company is way cheaper of course.
Great job!! Like I said in my survey comment its amazing to see an idea that started out as a simple conversation develop into a intricate design and then executed into the final build which ended up being a large gate.
Random comment, I saw the QT cup and it made me miss home. I don't see them anywhere since I moved to Tennessee a few years back.
Great video!
Nice gate.
Keep up the good work, cant wait to see that gate fully operational.
Two things I have found with respect to your bottom plate installed to keep the posts from sinking. I have found that making the bottom late wider than the post helps if there is any lift in the post to better hold to the concrete. Also adding a hole in the bottom plate can help drain out any water that might come later from a pin hole. Not a problem in Phoenix but can be a big deal where freezing temperatures are expected. I do both of these when installing metal corners on barbed wire fencing.
Keep up the good work old man
Having acquired talents is always a plus. So where is quality preserved if it is not when the person who sees what he wants can work with others to show them what he wants instead of just saying "no that is not it" . I love your concept of convenience since really defines the word.
Your knowledge, insight and voice is marvelous. Just a fact...
Great job on the welding! The Lincoln BuzzBox still do a great job for stick welding!
Howdy
Mr. Scott Sir.
It is good to see the Quick Trips are taking care of you out there. I had no idea they had spread so far our West. I am a Kansas City Native and we have had them for 30 plus years or so. I have enjoyed the journey you and Nate have taken us on over the past while. It feels like i am watching Home Movies when i see your videos. Both of my older brothers have worked construction and have built their own Houses over the years. I am not so apt when it comes to the finer points and remembering the local code so i just tinker in the garage. I get by with little home repairs and what not. Oh i almost forgot to say that i used to live out that way after i got out of the Marine Corps back in the mid 90's I would visit my friend down in Philomath and Corvallis Oregon. I was living in Portland at the time. I will follow up as some of the other comments have alluded to. Skookum as frig Would be appropriate i believe.
Anyway Keep up the good work and God will provide.
Thank You for keeping me sane
Looking forward to see how the hinges will be done, especially on those wires with the turnbuckles. I guess if the eye is exactly in line with the hinge it'll swivel fine but I haven't seen that before. I don't understand how the wires add more stability on top than if they were inside the area of the panel. Large gates like that are these days almost exclusively made to roll on tracks over here, partly to reduce the hazard in windy conditions and partly to save clearance space, so it'll be interesting to see, and also the latch.
Nice video.
Spot on thank you.
This is great channel.
Ive learned alot from you, i think you would be a great tacher🤔
Nice, and thanks for the video.
Very interesting stuff Nate and Scott !!! I appreciate everything that you all bring to the table and share with us !! You all are nice folks !!! Please be safe and may God continue to bless you and your families !!!!!! Eddy
Good job
awesome Video. Love seeing something like this coming to completion
Another great video Thanks Scott.8
The ol' Lincoln 'tombstone'! You bought that just for this job huh? Those are some serious posts! Thanks for the video! (Enjoy those clear AZ skies, you'd prob be socked in with smoke back home)
Nice video, I would really like to see more on the gate build and install.
Nice how things work out sometimes.. A brainstorm can turn into a blueprint real quick when you have all your ducks in a row!
Another quality video.
Full skookum!! As AvE would say. Job well done as always. Love...LOVE this channel!
But will it chooch?
We subscribe to the same channels. You sir are a man of refined taste as well I see.
Well done. It's a good feeling to have an engineer stamp your designed work, awesome! ....13
Great video as usual Scott! Things seem to be really moving along on this build now.
As a fence installer ,I have 2 points.. #1 when you haul steel on a steel trailer, wrapping the strap around the posts at least 1 full turn (like you did) is very very important. When you turn and brake a strap over the top only, can be a disaster.
#2 when using pre manufactured gates, the distance between, facing, and if the gate is connected to structure (like yours is) is a big deal.. 90% of gates that I install are freestanding, unconnected to a ridgid wall,so when the gate is 4ft wide... it is installed plumb, each foot after that gets set leaning away from the gate on a sliding scale ,due to fatigue/gravity ,(on gates really big they bubble is on the line away from the gate side) when the weight will pull the post down to plumb.
The worst thing is a sagging gate, also one that is set to low for the asphalt/concrete driveway that may be installed later..
Scott you had an elevation plan to mitigate this, just a tip for someone that wants to make they're own.
As always, great content!
Very nice
Nice, the Google Maps street view for this place is currently of it being an empty lot...will be neat when it updates :)
Great video! Definitely had to rewind and make sure the text tone was from the video lol! Videos on welding are great!
QT for the win!!!
Darn fine looking gate and posts!
mmm Wheat Thins lol. Keep up the great work
thanks awesome
Excellent work, sir. Love the videos. Keep up the great work!
Absolutely.
Love it!
6ft footings and 8x8 square tube.... I got some pesky teens running around my neighborhood, tackling down sale signs and mail boxes the last few weeks. During the middle of the night.
Mean as it sounds, wouldn't mind waking to the thud of one of those twits bouncing of a sign or box set on one of those posts.
Very cool! What's with the two little offcuts that came along with the big tubes? Seems like they were already strapped to the tubes before they came off the rack when you bought them.
Bren Darrow they most likely had to buy the full 20+’ sticks and then the steelyard cut them to the size needed before storing them until pickup. Most steelyards/suppliers will give you the cutoffs or ‘drops’ since you paid for whatever they had to special order or transfer in to accommodate your project. My local supplier will sell those ‘drops’ by the lb to other customers if the original buyer chooses not to take them.
ahhhh gotcha. Thanks Michael!
Yep that would be correct, those little pieces are still 50 lbs each
Random late thought - Did you drill a diagonal, upwards hole anywhere in the posts? If they're sealed airtight, and black, sitting in the Mesa sun, they're going to be a bomb. If there's any pinhole below ground, it'll suck humidity in and rust out, or crack. Almost all steel structures have little purposeful holes drilled to allow for pressures to equalize in an area you want them to, versus in an area you don't. 1/4" steel, not sure if it's necessary, but, *shrugs*.
My first welder like that was $99.00 new 2nd was a AC DC like new bought off the best welder i ever met paid $350.00 3rd was older AC DC paid $150.00 all keep on going use them more than my Miller syncrowave or mig welder
Nice
Hey Hey! IMS phoenix. Im in there at least once a week.
I thought everybody uses DC arc welders or MIG welders these days. At least the flux on the welding rods is kept dry in the Arizona weather. I would rather not live in an area that has so much crime you need to live in a fort. The new security cams available are amazing and I would have a bunch of those recording 24/7 around the perimeter.
Looks like the big brother to the gates April Wilkerson just built, pretty funny you're both doing them at around the same time. This one looks like a hoss.
I've used a bunch of rocks in the hole to help prevent 'sinking'....or maybe cap the bottom..?
I would love to work for this guy
