In boot camp I was assigned to a "State Flag" company. We performed at Boot Camp graduation ceremonies and even a "White Sox Company Induction" at a Chicago White Sox game. Of the eight weeks we were in Boot Camp, the first five were nothing but State Flag practice where most other companies were doing military rifle drill. Our final three weeks were the times our company performed for the graduations. We also strived for "Silent Drill" though part of our performance had the marching band to give us cadence. Our "silent" cadence was set by digging our left heel into the floor - giving a dull "thud" for cadence - unlike this Marine Corps Silent Drill Team that is REALLY silent. Something tells me they take longer than five weeks of training before the platoon is sent out to perform.

I retired from the Air Force and Air National Guard and was in marching band in college and our band director was an ex-Marine drill sergeant. I can say that our band marched far more complex formations with more precision than we did in the AF. We had to be at school in early August and marched without instruments for 3 weeks then we had to memorize the marches we played so we could concentrate on the marching.

The rifles are M1 Garand rifles, actual WW2 US issue infantry rifles . The bayonet is attached just underneath the muzzle (the noisy end of the rifle) extending forward, and is a very sharp double edged steel somewhere between a very big knife or ot a small sword. The blade is around 10 inches, or 24 cm. Its purpose was to for the rifle to be used as a spear if the enemy got too close or the wielder was out of ammunition. The bayonet was not routinely fitted, but carried separately.
The bayonets ussd here are not filed dull, they are honed to a regulation edge and can cause considerable damage.

@@MichaelEhline In candor, that would seem the smarter course. But other ceremonial units carry sharpened blades, so it stands to reason a team that puts in so much drill time into being utterly precise would give away bragging rights to a lesser unit.
I have seen a video of a Tomb Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington slice a bayonet into his boot and the foot inside during a Change ceremony, and you do not manage that with a blunt blade. Yes, I ackowledge they are soldiers, not Marines. And carry fully working (overdressed, if I'm honest) M-14s, not ceremonial Garands.

This performance took place near the end of half-time. As the football game is in progress, the team have to ensure they're warmed up to avoid injuries in the second half. If you'd wanted a performance of the Drill Team to take place without other things going on nearby there are plenty of alternative venues that are a lot better at doing that. The middle of a football game is not one of them, though.

Out of the couple hundred teams to attend we placed 4th (we were a vo-tech hi school) the only teams that beat us were military academies. We found out that we only allowed 5 min. to drill so we had 1 day to cut 2 min from our routine. Not bad for a bunch of hi schoolers.

Hello Diane. First, as a veteran of over 45 years, it is such an honor to see you take the time to review and comment on the SPECTACULAR Marine Corps Silent Drill team. The Marines you see come from the ranks of "regular" full time (what we call "active duty") marines. They compete among the entire Marine Corps and few are chosen. It is an honor unlike any other. The other branches of the American Military have similar teams (Army, Navy and Air Force). Now, to a few of your questions: the first one where you notice the Marine whose hat "fell off" and the Corporal who picked it up and placed it on his head: I believe it was rehearsed. The Marine may have "knocked it out" by mistake (on purpose). I'm not 100% sure, the Marine had a "bayonet" (the knife thingy) attached...so it could've been an accident...but...there was a complet "silent" pause while the Corporal picked up the hat (we call it headgear, the Marines call it "cover")...Your second comment about the next marine and "presenting the weapon for inspection" and you asking if it was "random" it was rehearsed. If you look closely, that Marine didn't have a bayonet (the knife) attached to the end of the rifle. However, the "drill" is SPECTACULAR and flawless...and YEs behind HIS back. The next set of Marines were also "pre-selected" and you noticed: "they don't have daggers on them..." You are good. The daggers (bayonets) were not attached and that was planned. But, don't think it's because they can't do it with a dagger...they CAN! The other fella with the sword is in fact a a sword, but to your point "he has 2 swords" no, the other "sword" you saw was the "scabbard" or the holder for the actual sword. Again, thank you for taking the time to share the video and your reaction! The young men and women of the Armed forces Drill teams are incredible! God bless you my dear friend! I hope all that rant, helped!

All of them practice being chosen for Rifle Inspection. All US Services are taught Drilling(Marching) but the US Marines are taught Drilling to a degree far beyond others. Drilling is not just to look pretty but to instill in an "Individual" how to "Act" as a Unit together under conditions of War. Practiced vs. rehearsed. The "Officer" at the end had a Sword and a scabbard for containing the sword on His Uniform Belt.

The Marines are wearing ther "dress" attire (basically formal wear for the military - each branch has their own distinguishing "dress blues"). But make no mistake, these guys are warriors first and foremost. To be recruited to this group is an honor, similar to the Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment ("The Old Guard"), which guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetary, or Blue Angels (Navy/Marines) or Thunderbirds (Air Force).
If you haven't taken a look at The Old Guard, it's worth viewing. Amazing (bad sense) how some tourists can be so flippant about the honor and sanctity of men and women who have fallen in service to their country (and the rest of us). That is, until the guard puts them in their place.

The "daggers" at the end of the barrel are called bayonets that the Marine affixes to the rifle (hence "fixed bayonets"). The bayonets are razor sharp and ready for combat. The Captain didn't have 2 swords, but was carrying the sword in his hand and its case (scabbard) hanging off his belt. A sword is what I carried while leading Marines during the formations and ceremonies and would bark out directional commands for marching, some of what you heard from the Captain in toward the beginning. I was a Marine (though they say there is no such thing as an ex-Marine) and I remember marching in drill parades being such an important part of the discipline. When we had infantry training our sergeant would have our company do these kooky moves, stepping right, about face, then step left, then about face and march in the other direction -- 200 men marching in unison going to and from chow, or training. The sarge was just amusing himself but we looked and sounded good as we pounded our boots in the pavement.

There was a kid who was known for being the Head drum major at his high school which was a high school in Montgomery Alabama. In order to be drum major, you have to do well with (I believe) two instruments, LS can confirm that or deny it. His nickname was Vanilla Funk. And he chose to stay in Montgomery for college and go to an HBCU (historically black College University) and there, he was less of a big fish in a small pond, but I believe he still made it to co-drum major. If you check out "Jefferson Davis High School Vanilla Funk" or "Alabama State Vanilla Funk" you'll see him. He'll stick out😅
I think he just graduated last year, but you'll get some sense of the drum and bugle Corps Precision that LS is talking about as well as the importance of that group at an hbcu. The kid has incredible precision.

The US Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy. It’s separate from the Navy but receives a good many types of support from it. It’s … complicated. But within the Naval Service, THIS is what you strive for as a drill teams, Marines or Navy.
Going on 60 years ago, our university Naval drill team tried just some of those moves (minus the daggers😅). Nobody got killed although most of us got whacked with rifles. These Marines would have kept a straight face watching us, then laughed their heads off over a beer at the EM Club back at 8th and I. For the US, this is the best.
If you’re ever in Washington, D.C. in the good weather months, see if you can get tickets to the Sunset Parade - maybe the Irish embassy could help. Between these guys and the scarlet jacketed drum and bugle team, it’s a great show.

      - - - - -
I was on the drill team when I was in college, and our officer representative was a Marine Corps officer who basically let us do any routine we wanted. In previous years all routines were done without bayonets, but we decided to do our routines with "fixed bayonets" and our Marine Corps officer was fine with it (we never really asked permission). In addition, the Commandant (a Navy Captain) thought it was great we used fixed bayonets.
We had a few parts where we spun our M-1 rifles in various group formations (the routines looked much more dangerous than they actually were), however future drill teams were no longer allowed to fix their bayonets due to the realization of possible serious injuries.

Great video, I'll try helping on a few of your questions. Drill or drilling is what practice is called in the military. The M1 Carbine is a gun from WWII and Korea (my dad had one and the let him keep it), the bayonette is fixed to the end. The Drill leader didn't have two swords he had one and the leather & brass sheath that holds it called a scabbard afixed to his belt. I hadn't seen this before. The closest I've come was at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The tomb is guarded by a single soldier who marches back and forth silently. Every so often there's a changing of the guard, with a ritual inspection of the solder's rifle and uniform. The tomb is guarded 24/7, regardless of weather. It's very somber, as you'd expect. The guards aren't just there for show. Anyone who tries to do something stupid, like trespass on the tomb, will be met with force.
The firearms were rifles. The knife-like things attached to the front of the rifles were bayonets.
