20:43 The Rumble Rumble Fruit is called the Goro Goro no Mi in Japanese (ゴロゴロの実). ゴロゴロ is the onomatopoeia for thunder. For those "rumbles" to be related to earthquakes it should be Gura Gura (グラグラ), Gata Gata (ガタガタ) or Yusa Yusa (ユサユサ) the onomatopoeias for tremors. Just explaining this because it is common knowledge for the intended audience, the Japanese audience, so this information should've been provided in a Translator's Note, that VIZ refuses to use.
They localize the manga instead of translating it, and do it badly. The don't research, so Going Merry Go became Merry Go instead of Going Merry (the final "go" is a suffix added to ship's names, all ships in One Piece are "Something Go"), they censor, so Enel/Eneru stayed "Kami" instead of being translated as "God" and they turned his "Priests" into "Vassals" (to avoid the very much intended religious connotations, after sailing through Heaven's Gates into a field of clouds filled with angels), and they don't provide all the intended information, so you end up trying to guess what rumble means, when it's pretty clear in the original (ゴロゴロ should've been translated as Rumble if you provide a Translator's Note clarifying it's the sound of thunder, but if you don't it should've been localized as Thunder. And the same goes for Ace's メラメラ, where mera-mera is the sound of fire, as the translation given, "flare", doesn't necessarily mean "fire". Many other DFs, past and future, have undergone the same problem), etc. VIZ way of translating when convenient, localizing when convenient, and ignoring when convenient, SUCKS!
Sorry for the rant, I'm a translator, and this angers me.
Nah man, you cooked. Which is why I love reading spoilers and fan translation ahead of time to then compare it with Chinese and English translations when they come out. It brings on so much more context and appreciation for the motifs and move names Oda uses.
@@michael-um1ge That's why I mostly read scanlations to both English and Spanish, and when the opportunity arises I buy the volumes in Spanish (Argentinian IVREA version, there are several official Spanish translations, because there are way too many Spanish dialects). When two versions differ, 8/10 times, IVREA, Spanish scan and English scan agree while VIZ differs. Of course, everyone makes mistakes, but VIZ makes them systematically, and I find their policy of not using TNs aggravating as a professional.
I remembered another crime in this arc! "Endless Varse". The Japanese says "限りない大地". The translation for that is "Limitless/Unlimited Land". Accompanying that, you have the Furigana, side annotations used in Japanese to convey pronunciation. Those are "フェアリーヴァース", read Fairy Vearth.
First of all, there's no "Endless". Having no limits, and having no end are to completely different things. All circles are limitless, for example, but they have a very clear and discernable end. So to begin with, they failed to translate "限りな".
Secondly, you can choose to use either Fairy Vearth, or Limitless Land, but you cannot take 限りな from Limitless Land and ヴァース from Fairy Vearth and play mix-and-match!
I give you the "Varse" they used instead of Vearth, as the katakana just say anything between "Vaas" and "Buarsu" if taken as they are. But "Endless" is a mistranslation, and again, you have to pick and use one, not half and half. You choose one, and the first time you include a TN explaining the other. That's how translating works
Oda was firing on all cylinders when it came to creativity and foreshadowing this arc, actually a much deeper arc than is obvious and Enel is a menace!
EEEE! So excited!
The first big clue to the larger mystery of this series: The Poneglyphs and the void century!!
So much to think about!
Feel free to theorize, that's what makes one piece so good.
Will do!
My take on the pumpkin juice line is:
1. Gan Fall want want to humanise himself in an attempt lessen the gap between the 2 groups
2. The reason soil (vearth) is sacred is that it’s needed to grow crops and especially something as big as a pumpkin would be impossible to grow in clouds. So he a little playfully says he’s not willing to completely give up upper yard but is willing to share it.
I agree, but it also shows his misunderstanding of the generational pain the displacement of their people has inflicted upon the Shandians. My read on Viper loosing it in the scene is that you can't just force the conversation into one of playful allegory and a common baseline of mutual understanding (even if you recognize that that needs to happen for peace talks to succeed) if you don't first acknowledge the massive harm you've done and that harsh power discrepancy you are displaying in that very moment.
he sharing about himself. "I like pimpkin juice
I dont think Gan Fall was trying to humanise himself tbh. I genuinely think he was kinda pissed at this point by wypers attitude and the whole situation so it was an intended jab
@@maxpower2480 I think he was angry because its essentially like telling a person who is close to die of thirst "Oh btw I just installed this new swimming pool. Its super cool"
I’m looking through the comments and I don’t see anyone else suggesting it, but have you considered reviewing the G-8 arc? It’s a filler (non-canon) arc that’s just in the anime but it is beloved by fans and honestly just a really good and funny arc in general. It would require you to watch the anime, and I understand that’s not really your thing, but I at least wanted to bring it to your attention. It’s episodes 196-206 in the anime
I’m hoping to watch the G8 arc.
@@Shellyish Wonderful! I look forward to it.
So some name of the devil fruits are Japanese onomatopoeias, which is a big thing in Japanese culture, and are definitely a huge part of mangas. Even signifying someone staring has the word (jirojiromiru) used as a "sound effect" (ji~~~~).
Some examples are Ace's fruit, which is NOT the flame-flame in Japanese, but mera-mera, an onomatopoeia of a blazing fire; Enel's is called goro-goro, which is the sound of crashing thunder/lightning; and Mr 1 is not called blade-blade but supa-supa, which is the sound of blade swishing the air!
Even Eneru’s name can be a weird twist on Eminem.
Eminem sounds like MNM.
Eneru’s most common English translation is Enel, which is pronounced like NL.
interesting
That’s fascinating.
Did you ever watch that 1990 Kevin Costner film, Dances With Wolves? It's about a Civil War vet who ends up joining the Lakota Sioux in their struggle to defend their land against the encroaching US Govt.
I love that in an arc that's a metaphor for the struggles of First Nations/Native Americans, Oda had our Strawhats LITERALLY dance with wolves.
I had not made that conection! Oda's work is heavily inspired in pop culture/western literature: Django was inspired by michael jackson, Crocodile was inspired by captain hook, Skypeia was heavily inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk and as you said dancing with wolves, Usopp is they guy that cried wolf, but is also Aesop the great fable teller (also the boy that creid wold was one of his fables) i dont want to number all the other references as they all would be spoiling Shelly if she happens to encounter this comment, but boy One Piece takes from everithing Oda has surely compiled from a lot of sources: Myths and Deities arround the world, Yokai, The Bible, Salvador Dali, Disney, Baron Munchausen, Dracula, Einstein, Newton, Tom and Jerry, Journey to the West.
if you have time look at Lugh a Celtic deity/warrior the parallels are mindblowing
what an Epic Movie slow but impactful. it was 2 VHS tapes i believe.
And in fact you have a direct reference to the movie in the bonfire scene
I did not know that was a reference, but I think it would make the most sense with Oda
Instantly clicked, liked and commented for the algorithm, but will watch later when I have time~ 😅

Vinland Saga is a special manga for sure. One of my favorites of all time. The evolution of the characters and the messages the series is conveying is so beautiful. It raises many questions about war, pacifism, diplomacy, revenge, maturity, forgiveness, slavery, colonization...
i really like it im only done with Season 1 lolbut ive also seen the manga uo to a very pivital point actually. the art is truky Amazing
I know this comment is a little late but I want to explain the "Pumpkin Juice" thing. Someone else in the comments tried to explain it but didn't make much sense. So anyways one of the many things Noland showed the Shandians was how to grow pumpkins.
The Shandians kept that tradition for generations after he left, so when the Skypieans took vearth away form the Shandians, they also took pumpkins and pumpkin juice. When Gan Fall tells Wyper he loves pumpkin juice, he's trying to relate to Wyper and say "I appreciate this thing about your culture". Wyper doesn't take it that way, he takes it as a microaggression, he feels Gan Fall is mocking him, given they colonized his land.
Just imagine a racist telling a black person "yeah we enslaved your entire race, but hey, I like rap music". That is essentially how Wyper feels and why he got so angry when Gan fall said that.
WOOOO ONE PIECE & WHAT A CHERRY ON TOP WITH VINALNDSAGA!!! I collected the physicals for both series bc of how much I love them
Wonderful!
29:55 Vinland Saga is AMAZING!! Extremely different to One Piece in both tone and development, but just as amazing. Its targeted to an older demographic, so you can expect things to be more brutal, but there's no gratuity in it, and the artstyle and feats performed to be more realistic (to some degree) as opposed to One Piece cartoonish style
when you start making theories, you become true OP fan, the biggest moments of Skypiea before you, another tip for the future: don't forget about gods 😃 I had wonderful time with you vid
I’ve told the gods away. Thank you!
I feel like the Eneru is a pretty interesting character. It's not clear how he came to wield such awesome power, but seeing the aftereffects on his psyche is great food for thought
Yes!
One of the things I love about this arc is that there are so many subtle hints to a discussion around belief and religion, or the power behind belief and what that means. Oda does a great job of presenting ideas and he tells his audience “now YOU discuss.” The messages and themes in this arc are great, accompanied by some excellent moments of dialogue.
There is a lot of foreshadowing of things in this arc and it introduces a lot of concepts we will still not understand for a while, but nothing in this arc is wasted. While I always say Loguetown, the end of the East Blue, is the end of the prologue, I also think Skypiea is introducing a lot of set up for the future. If Loguetown was the prologue for our main characters, Skypiea is the prologue for the world. After this arc the world and the story of the world just feels so much bigger.
Oh I also love the Giant Jack talk. What’s interesting is that if you look at the Map of Skypiea that we got before Jaya, there seems to be a big giant drawn on it. I’m curious if there is a connection between the sky islands and Giants. So there is definitely a connection there. You’ll also see influences from Pocahontas, which I am sure Oda was influenced by. There are certain parts of this arc I’m excited to see you get to.
Also as we talk about Jack and the Beanstalk, it’s interesting to me that Usopp had such a strong connection to giants on Little Garden and he has a slingshot. It’s almost like David and Goliath.
I’m also interested to know how you’ve been liking the cover stories and if you’ve been reading SBS stuff.
Always happy to see you post.
The flow of consciousness here is exactly what i/we want.
We know what happened. Keep telling us how you feel. I love the insight you bring to the community Shelly. Keep it up!
Awe! Thank you do much! :)
I love your insights into Eneru’s character. Great analysis as always
I'm glad!
The different versions of Kami Enel/Eneru are because it’s japanese, and the whole L/R thing, plus their words don’t end with consonants. So they’re saying Eneru when they speak, but they also say Usoppu and stuff, and we ignore that U. Long story short tho it doesn’t really matter :) that’s just why they exist as far as I understand and until Oda writes it in English there’s not really a “right” way
small correction! the only time - that i know of - a japanese word will end in a consonant is if it ends in "N", which is its own syllable! I agree with everything else, but would advocate for the Japanese pronunciations. I refuse to call Zoro "Zolo" lmao.
It is funny watching Zoro going the wrong way with a literal compass bird that always points south following next to him.
Yes! That’s great!!
Enel (Eneru, depending on the translation) is the embodiment of the false god. When we first encounter him, we don't actually see him. We see his lightning zap somebody trying to escape the Upper Yard from Nami's eyes as she is scooting around on the waver. We next see his lightning bolt try to zap Connis for revealing the truth to the Straw Hats before Gan Fall saves her. When we actually see Enel and his interactions, though he is undeniably powerful, its also obvious that he isn't a real god. He has to play by the same rules as the rest of the inhabitants of the world.
Enel, and his Priests, have the power that they call Mantra, which gives them the ability to slightly predict somebody's thoughts and actions, and Enel is the most gifted in this ability.
If a bad dude wanted to position himself as a god, what better way than being able to smite somebody with lightning from anywhere because he has the lightning logia fruit and the ability to essentially listen in on anybody's conversation / thoughts through his mantra. If you think of all of the big god dudes of history, Zeus, Thor, Set, etc. they are all the bros of lightning/thunder. There's something inherently terrifying about lightning, as it is instant. Enel's abilities are meant to invoke fear, but aren't equitable to being all-mighty like we traditionally think of a god to be.
Enel is a thought experiment on what would happen if a flawed human, which we all are, were to become God. He's not actually a god, but is able to masquerade as one through the rules of the One Piece world.
skypiea gets a lot of hate, but you seem to be enjoying it so far !! the ending is the best part imo so im looking forward to seeing what you think of it it :))
Good idea to break the arcs into more digestible chunks! And congrats on your upcoming summer break!
Thank you!!
I can't wait for part 4! The endings of Oda's arcs rarely disappoint
You’d be surprised about how many ppl talk about eminem especially these last few days
she did recored this umm a few days before all the Awsomeness i think
Ha! I just realized (after this video) that Eminem is still a key celebrity figure. I know nothing of pop culture.
There are no bad devil fruits in One Piece, only unimaginative users. Eneru's use of his powers combined with his mantra is a killer combo. Never underestimate any fruit which might seem lame, just look at Luffy.
glad to see you upload another review,!
More to come!
The part between 6:33 - 8:02 is phenomenal! Something everyone should hear 😁
Awe! Thank you!!
I learned reading and rereading One Piece for many many years that oda is a farming writer (for my lack of knowledge for a better term). Oda plants many elements on his story and if it seems to be relevant to his story farther he brings back that element. However he also abandon a lot of those elements. Like the bag of dirty or the pumpkin juice, you don't what role they will play in the story until the end and it might be nothing.
Oh! Interesting. Thank you!!
The thing about the rumble rumble fruit was just for the audience to know that he is wielding a powerful devilfruit. it is basicaly the same thing as crocodiles, smokers or aces fruit. He becomes element he as dominion over, which makes most of these people untouchable.
Enjoy Vinland Saga, its on my todo list as well.
Hope you'll give Ghost in the Shell a shot someday. It's such a great Cyberpunk Manga
Amazing content as always 😊
Awe! You are too kind.
so the Skypeian's Mantra doesn't confer a future sight onto their observation skills, it's actually more of a form of telepathy where they can sense the Intent behind a person's actions, as if they would be mentally telegraphing their attacks.
Keep up the great work one piece won't be the same without you😢
I will try my best
Hi! Nice to see you again =)
You too!
i would love Vinland Saga reviews one of my favorite series the characters and themes are amazing
when you are done with skypia you should watch g8 its a anime only arc and its pretty funny
I’m hoping to watch the G8 arc! ☺️☺️
Im sure you know media has changed, algorithms silo peoples knowledge of pop culture into their interests. Eminem is still massively popular and active as an artist and fuels youtube reactors like crazy.
I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know. ☺️
21:03 ifykyk 😂
I wish I could say it's an arc that I enjoyed but its probably top 2 of my least favorite arcs across all of OP. I get the importance of it and its ramifications in the future though and your enthusiasm about this arc brings me joy anyways.
thanks and as a fellow teacher...yay to an almost end of the school year. almost there!
Devil fruit names are often not what they actually are, like ace’s named flare flare but it’s actually the flame flame fruit so the rumble fruit is actually the lightning fruit
Rumble is the rough translation for goro goro which is the onomatopoeia for thunder
Mera Mera (メラメラ) does not mean Flame Flame either. It's the onomatopoeia for fire flaring. In the same way, Goro Goro (ゴロゴロ) is the Onomatopoeia for thunders rumbling. I agree that VIZ should've translated Mera Mera as Flame Flame in this context, as メラメラ is specific about fire, while flare isn't, and Goro Goro could've been translated as Thunder Thunder (as ゴロゴロ is specific about thunder). That's because VIZ doesn't translate One Piece, they localize it, and Flame Flame and Thunder Thunder are better localizations than Flare Flare and Rumble Rumble, which are better translations of the actual words said in Japanese.
Or better said, "メラメラ" means "sound of fire" and "ゴロゴロ" means "sound of thunder". You can either translate that as "flare" and "rumble", or localize it as "flame/fire" and "thunder". Since VIZ localizes OP, they should've localized the fruits. Otherwise they should stick to translating One Piece and using Translator's Notes
15:53 Fear is Kami (Fear is God)
You should check out Luffy's Baka Song from the anime that he sings when he gets separated in the jungle and eventually meets Wyper again. Too bad the song gets interrupted. It is a much beloved by the fandom and a hilarious moment. 🎶
Skypiea is goated. Vinland Saga is also goated.
vinland would be so fun! So excited to be following your journey, skypeia is very important thematically so I’m glad you are digging in. Vinland is definitely a different vibe then one piece but there is so much to analyze you’d love it
im so early!!! i always look forward to seeing a new one piece video from you, i haven't watched fully yet but i hope you're enjoying yourself! there's an arc coming up in the near future that im really looking forward to seeing your thoughts on 😊 also, eneru can be pronounced like "in-eh-ru" (basically how you're pronouncing it anyway), but in some translations he's referred to as enel, pronounced "in-el" its up to personal preference!
Eneru didn't see that only 5 would survive his game. He's just playing god and pretending he can give prophecy.
Oh! Hm. Interesting!!
I definitely recommend reading Vinland Saga!
i love one piece! 🙏🏾
The last parts of Skypeia are 💯🔥
I feel like I’m going to read them in a flurry.
I loved your reviews for One Piece! This was a great video. You've said so many things that, having caught up, I now see in a totally different light. Can't wait for the next one!
Thank you!!!
Thankss, you are so sweet♥️♥️
You are!
Hopefully this is not a spoiler. I'm pretty sure it's not. I got curious and checked how Enel's power is shown in the manga, and I can definitely understand now how it's still seems like Enel's main power is seemingly STILL mysterious for you this far in. I'm pretty sure the colored manga (definitely not the anime) does not have this confusion, but just to confirm, Enel literally have lightning powers. Just as one an example, in ch241, that big KROOM thing on one of the pages is literally a beam of electricity coming from above devastating the ground, and is bluish in color.
4:48 i dont know where yiu are in the story or if the "I like Pumpkin juice" is even explained but basically its.. Lets get to Know Each Other! its a but obtuse and he didnt try to explain but he wqs trying to "Getting to knooooow you Getting to Know Alll about you!"
Ah! Thank you!!!
Vinland Saga is really good
Its not random, considee the full context:
Wyper is obviously upset, he asks for the heads of skypeans as retribution.
Gan fall: sorry, thats not possible, and we cant return ur land cuz "i like pumpkin juice".
Its so blatantly colonizer, lmfao😅😅😅
It's more saying that he isn't willing to give up land that can produce so much food that his people need to survive yet he is willing to share the land and let them have their home back
He isn't going to condemn his own people to starvation for an injustice that he didn't commit and even if he did he wouldn't force his people to starve to death
@@animeproblem1070 right, but i just said what Wyper heard.
@@ricorichardson5945 I'm just saying it is more complicated than just the land
The rumble rumble fruit is the lightning fruit, its supposed to be the Japanese onomatopoeia for thunder. When Eneru was talking about being lightning he meant it literally, he has elemental powers just like Smoker, Ace, and Croc. So he's basically invincible because of his fruit, is nearly omniscient because of his mantra powers, and can call down lightning on people who annoy him. Its not really surprising he developed a major god complex...
Also, vearth is just dirt, it doesn't have any special magical powers. But it is "magical" for the sky people because it can grow plants, which wouldn't exist naturally in the sky otherwise. Gan Fall's line about the pumpkin juice was a bit random, but I think he's basically saying that Skypeia has already incorporated the Shandian land and rely on it for farming and stuff, so its too late for them to just give it back.
The Rumble Rumble Fruit is a Devil Fruit that when consumed allows the eater to become, produce, and control lightning. Also, like Smoker, Ace, and Crocodile, it makes the eater immune to conventional attacks and weaponry.
Kami is Japanese for god I hate that they didn’t translate it 😭
:)
vinland saga is good.
The word you are looking for when you say "without doing it in a nice way" is "genocide". I don't think it does us any good to beat around the bush when it comes to the atrocities we commit/our ancestors committed.
Besides the obvious allusion to the ruthless colonization of North America, I've always read Skypiea as a comment on the Israel/Palestine conflict. (Struggle for a holy land... The moderate leader on the invaders side, who is engaging in peace negotiations, being replaced by one just trying to exploit the conflict.)
You're spoiled on this series.
What do you mean?? ☺️
Skypiea, Syrup Village, and Thriller Bark were my least favorite arcs of all time.
