She for sure would have made a great pioneer woman in the American west in the 1800s, as long as she was good with having 8 children! I'm pretty sure she would be ok with shooting a ne'er-do-well trespasser on her old west property.
Here in Ireland we also use the technique of digging a deep ditch around the whole perimeter of the tunnel and bury the plastic. The on,y way to keep it secure in high winds. You could probably strengthen the frame at the front and back with some timber, if you think it’s too flimsy around the doors. In summer you could make netting for the doors to get airflow, otherwise it’s going to be too hot. We also put a protective strip of tape on the metal frame where the plastic touches in order to prevent the sun to burn holes. can imagine it’s going to be fierce hot there during the summer. If you have some big pieces of black plastic, you could cover the ground inside the tunnel to kill off grass and weeds before starting to plant in it.😊
Yeah it'll be interesting to see how it holds up in the sun! I am planning to put shade material over it in the summer as shade is in more demand than added heat haha, so hopefully that'll protect it somewhat!
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead I believe Pool Noodles would help on the framing and the huge billboards of vinyl would be great for your ground cover in the green house, see if you can find old used ones for sale or for free!
I complimented the editing job on the last video. I want to do it again. I love the way you've clearly learned the basics of keeping clear, relatively level audio levels! That is the hardest bit that kills or kicks ass in videos. On top of that you've showed us the parts that are visually important to you. What keeps you interested in the projects keeps us interested too. The mess ups and the successes together. Keep trusting your gut. You've got this!
Aw thanks, I appreciate that. It's definitely hard getting good audio without a dedicated mic, every week there are plenty of clips that I have to delete due to the wind mostly haha, or random dogs barking like crazy. Anyway I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead Harriet, others putting up green house plastic or shade cloth used this method; tie filled water bottles to ropes that are long enough to throw over the green house at two ends, attach the other end of the ropes to the two ends of the plastic, throw the two plastic bottles filled with water over the green house and pull the plastic over the hoop portion of the green house, untie the plastic portion and secure to the hoops. Eventually you’ll want to add shade cloth in the hotter seasons, this method will be a bit easier for you. You did a major build here and did a major workout too, you rock lady, I love your green house and water systems! This garden is multifunctional now. See if you can find some old billboard signs of vinyl for sale or being given away to use as flooring for the green house, it would block out weeds and grass in your green house and save you from having to keep it cut and weeded. Sometimes cattle ranches use huge plastic buckets for mineral licks for their cattle, see if you can get those empty ones from them or purchase them from them, they are food grade and safe & great for growing many plants at a time in your green house and two people can move them around your green house as necessary. I hope these suggestions help. I know this was lengthy but it could not be helped. Keep on keeping on!❤🎉
Regarding the doors for the polytunnel, when you wrapped the door frames and pillars with the poly, the flexible aluminum bent so that's why you have gaps and the doors are not closing properly. You need to spend a little more time releasing tension from the poly (slack where needed) and the doors will close properly. For the tunnel to work, you need to have almost no gaps where cold air can come in and warm air leak out. You can also use some old rubber to seal any space you have around the doors. We use the poly tunnel to grow onions and salad during the winter. Hope it helps, greetings from Romania. LE: you can add the green fabric you used around the household in the summer and keep the doors open to keep the plants happy
Wish I had you energy harriet you work so very hard you seem to be exceeding with all the things you do love watching your blogs and how things are coming on
My heavens! Harriet put the entire tunnel together, plastic and all....💯and NOW she says 'I am going to try & dig a ditch'....I have no doubt she can do that❗What an amazing woman‼💚💗
Just wanted to say hi 😊 I’m a new subscriber. Just wanted to say I love your videos and it takes me back to my lovely Spain 🇪🇸 ❤ Thank you for taking us along your journey. Love from Denmark 🇩🇰
Holy cow Harriet! You have so much drive! Wow. When I saw you put that tunnel together I thought awesome job. Congratulations it looks solid and ready for potting.
Hi Harriett, you must be incredibly fit and you have learned so many new skills since I started watching your interesting videos. Keep up the excellent work 😊
That's awesome you must be pleased with yourself. One thing, we have a second mesh screen on our poly tunnel so that we can let the heat out and not let the animals in. You may want to do that also. You can put water filled black plastic barrels inside the tunnel, they heat up during the day and keep the tunnel warmer at night.
Well done Harriet you should be very proud of yourself a job well done, some people dry there washing in there poly tunnels in the winter you can grow loads of seedlings, I look forward to seeing what you grow xx
Great job! I think your thought processes with the straw bales is on point. I have like straw bale gardening, it is really beneficial for some crops, it's not for everything, but it really has it's advantages and it is useful to create really good compost. I'm enjoying watching your journey. ☺️
Oona was just "trying to help" you move the pipe. 😂😂 At least the cats or goats didn't join in. Amazing job by yourself! Suggest maybe putting several layers of cardboard on the bottom of the poly-tunnel to hopefully keep the weeds down, bugs and other creatures blocked. Enjoy! Congratulations 👏.
Nothing is important just a lot of hard work! Amazing work! Wow building is something I have struggled with this year! I’m not amazing at it yet! The power of yet
I have a shed and put plywood over the metal frame which got termites, I put rocks in the metal frame and old car rubber car mats over , I put some plastic boxes inside and the cats will sleep all day in there.
Straw bale gardening was the first that came to mind when I saw those bales. Make sure you condition/wet them properly before you start planting. Had great results with both squash/pumpkins and strawberries with them.
Good afternoon Harriet. Well done. It's incredible what a strong and self sufficient young woman can do toward contributing to the building of a homestead and a greenhouse when she puts her mind to it. Thanks for sharing a look at your Little Spanish Farmstead. ¡Definitivamente tienes mucho por lo que deberías estar orgulloso! 🌹🌼😉
You need to make sure the frame is square and that the door is closing ok. All before the ditch and the rebars Because if it is not square it will be weaker and it won't be good that way. The bales are nice to use inside to raise your trays of seeds later You are incredible, you worked yourself soo hard and alone. Plz be careful
Hi Harriet! There's always "one more thing", isn't there? Congrats on the excellent job assembling the poly tunnel. I can't wait to see what you can grow in there, and in the hay bales.
I would say Harriet, the left over brackets are used to hold down the frame at the door ends. Two at each end and I would position them about 10cm from each side of the opening. This I guess is to ensure the frame is secured to the ground at the opening where the wind would do the most damage if not secured down. I would use 2 barb with a flat piece of square metal plate 20cmx 40c rectangular welded to it, and placed about 60cm down to get a good strong hold. The other end of the barb needs to be bent over 90deg and both pointing in the same direction to allow the bracket to slide on. The same could be done using rope which might prove easier for you. But well done excellent achievement on your behalf. Tip for Water Pipe install, use the pipe itself to find the level and hold it up in the air until it water stops flowing out the top.
thank you - especially for the tip on using the hose itself to determine water level. So obvious when you say it, but never would have occurred to me!! Amazing!
Well done 👍💪 I was just thinking: 'good that you did it in winter' when you said it. It can get really hot in there. That's why it is ideal to have two doors for ventilation.
Haha everything is always a work in progress in a project like this, but I do try and provide some kind of closure in each video! Maybe a round-up on how various things are doing is in order.
Wow, y'all did a wonderful job. I love the straw bale gardening idea around it. Keep your eyes out for some shade cloth, you're going to need it soon. It looks so beautiful the way you put things. I was in my greenhouse just before I watched your video. It was 85 in there😎. My greenhouse is smaller than yours & I have 4 windows on each side to cool it off. I wish I had a neighbor like you. It would be fun. Wonderful job.

Impressive! I assembled most of the frame today for just a 4.5 x 2 metre poly tunnel and it was a struggle at times! As you said, nothing a well-placed shoulder or knee couldn't help with. I found it weirdly enjoyable and I also stopped today just before putting the top bits on. I'm a bit nervous of putting the sheet on myself but your video gives me hope!

Wow, well done Harriet!! That greenhouse looks amazing and build it by yourself, wow wow wow! I am at the lettuce for chicken part so i will add it now so i don't forget. Be careful how much lettuce you give to the chickens, it can make them a bit sick (very watery poo). I know from my mom that is forbidden to give it to baby chickens and small amounts for grown ones.
Now one pot of Basil is not enough, as plants like to be planted in close proximity to one another, ideally 3's or 5's and that way pollination is better covered by insects. As for the Polytunnel it is always recommended one watch a video first before construction, as then all ideas are covered and that rebar could have been properly attached before the plastic sheeting, which now you know.

Well done job, the 4 thingies/ bar going over bottom of door each corner to keep it down ! One job I would have done is to put on all top bars a isolation tape to protect plastic of heating up and deteriorating faster, maybe something to remember next time when replacing plastic. Otherwise great example for us other girls love what you doing and I'm on my way to join you ASAP in the mountains of East Spain brava !
Thank you! A few others have also suggested the tape idea so I'm definitely gonna add that - if I can wiggle it on underneath the plastic. I think I can! Otherwise, when I replace the plastic, I guess...

hey Harriet, love your channel. your inspiring person. i just checked your last video. and i just want to warn you about polytunnels. dont underestimate the brute power of the wind... the slightest bit of slack in your plastic might be enough for the wind to rip your entire polytunnel up . i would realy recommend doing this with at least 2 people to get evrything under good tension.. ive seen many polytunnels destroyed by winds. the ropes and the pegs are realy crucial elements to keep your tunnel ankerd to the ground.. but anyway, your doing great! i just wanted to give you some advice, if you would ever build a pollytunnel again. hopes all goes well, and allot of goodluck
Recently found you both, love the content, thank you so much most definitely an inspiration.I must have a poly tunnel now we live in the almeria region and I have no shade at all .
I think the hooks, You tuckled at last, are for the rope...if it is stormy... You have to put them outside the tent into the ground, and they should fix the whole thing.
I really love and appreciate your work...its hard work... i am also thinking about to grow organic when i visit my country ,they don't familiar much about organic .

I really love and appreciate your work...its hard work... i am also thinking about to grow organic when i visit my country ,they don't familiar much about organic .
Thank you!
