Personally I agree with you there are so many artists that are "guilty" of this. But with so much music being made everyday and so many new artists emerging one could see how there is overlap sometimes. Overall a fantastic video that really covers all sides of the topic. he frequently uses flows and song styles from Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Common, Eminem, MGK, Gambino, Kanye, Travis Scott, Big Sean and even Joey Bada$$ at times.
and yet he's still one of my favorites. 🤷‍♂️ he gives the credit for stuff that inspires him and shows respect to people.

I think its very disingenuous to say that an artist like Logic is simply "ordering take out and rearranging it to call it his own" just because you use the same samples as another song in one part doesnt mean by any stretch that the song as a whole is the same. You have to take into account all of the instrumentals, the vibe, beat, and lyrics. Its more like, say I made a painting of a room, and within that room are all of my inspirations. If within the room of the painting there is another small painting on the wall of, say the mona lisa- something iconic and relateable. you cant just shrug off my entire painting saying that the overall painting of the entire room is simply a copy of the mona lisa.

I think the mark of a good sample is how transformative it is.
Look at Luther Vandross' "A House Is Not A Home" and Kanye West's "Slow Jamz." The difference between the two songs is shocking. The sample elevates the status of the original song from relative obscurity, and shows that Kanye listens to a lot of diverse music outside of hip-hop.
When Logic samples "Waves", or "Amazing", 1. He isn't elevating the status of Kanye West, because Kanye is already an extremely popular figure, it comes across more like Logic is trying to elevate HIMSELF to Kanye's level, and 2. It doesn't show Logic's dedication to music, because who the fuck hasn't heard those songs. The popularity of Logic's samples comes across more like he's biting their style because those people are still around, still making fucking music. It doesn't feel like he's humbled by their greatness; rather, he's climbing their coat tails to get himself up to their level of greatness.

Plus he uses the same words & even sometimes bars a lot. Dude has rhymed every word that ends with -ated in like 40% of his songs. Estryus Flemming - We're having this discussion because there is debate on the issue. While the use of sampling, covering, remixing, homaging and other forms of creatively "copying" has been in use for decades, there remains a strain of thought that any form of influence from your predecessors must be attenuated as much as possible.

Dont Worry about it did you watch the video or read the comment correctly?? Lmao I don’t think you paid attention. The kid in the comment said he has a lot of influences. No one said he has any song that isn’t influenced. Nothing is new anymore. If you were to try to find a song from this year alone I can promise you that it would be pretty damn hard to find a song that won’t have similar lyrics, beat, or flow to a different work. My best bass teacher taught me that the best way to come up with your own music is to look at the playing of others and learn it, and then splice it all together to create your own sound. I'm not plagiarizing if I learn the same lick as my favorite bass player, I'm not plagiarizing if I use that lick in my own solos and creation, but I if I use that lick over the same backing with the same context, we have a different story. Even though Logic is using beats and even some lines that don't belong to him, they're more like allusions to famous rap titles and artists rather than blatant stealing. Logic is so good because he knows the sounds he likes, from the artists he likes, and how to present it all to his fans while still being original. This creates a holistic sounding mega album that is mass produced and circulated through millions of hands, while, again, still being original. In this sense, he's merely following in the footsteps of artists of his monetary and commercial calibre (Kendrick, Rihanna, etc)

He didnt say he's the greatest of all time, but he said he's the greatest at what he do. He's the greatest in the art of stealing, respectfully. But its not stealing, its retroactively paying homage, but with a twist he's actually using something similar to something familar made by his famous artist to attract new fans by using his twist or influence on it, whether its the cadence/flow, lyrics or track/instrumental. Kinda like reverse psychology in a sense like, maybe by using something ppl are used in his unique way, he promote his message to ppl who wouldnt give it a look, otherwise. The power of suggestion with a familar phrase or sound, maybe.

The way I look at it is no artist, to my knowledge, has called Logic out for "stealing" their beat, flow, line, etc.(Iguess Joyner for that 1-800 song). But really the only people getting mad or bringing it up are fans. Obviously, these artists know Logic and if they felt Logic was taking their shit, they would call him on it. Logic has been very open about who inspires him, and I see his "stealing" more as tributes to those artists who inspire him. Whats that saying, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Great video man! I have never seen your stuff and I was pleasantly surprised by the level headed attitude on this subject. As a guy in a band, I can tell you that you got alot of these things right from the perspective of many musicians. I think your point about whether anyone can call themselves the best if the steal is really valid. I have been forced in my time in college to study music history, and I can tell you that this has been happening forever. Beethoven was hugely inspired by Haydn and Mozart and he is considered by many to be the most influential composer in that realm of music. The difference is like you said, setting yourself apart, and for rap that usually means lyrically, at least for me. I think the Cudi rip that you showed is an example of logic stealing, but to specifically show the love to a huge influence of his. I personally don't think logic is the best to do it, not because he steals from others, but that he recycles lyrics from mixtape to album of vice versa. Everything aside though, it seems like you are doing good, thoughtful videos and I'll be checking more out. I'll leave you with a quote from Stravinsky to double down on how good your thoughts on the subject are. "A good composer does not imitate, he steals."

Hit the nail on the head with those points. Thanks to Logic, I listened to more music I haven't been exposed before. Favorite track of Logic is definitely Soul Food followed by City of Stars.

What is the definition of a MIX TAPE? As in the difference between an EP or LP and a MIX TAPE. I'm 37 so to me a MIX TAPE is made with two cassette players and given to a middle school crush! Thanks.

Emerald damn! Was it my use of terms like LP and EP or the fact that I said was 37?

I believe a mixtape is a compilation of the artist music(s) they want to release online but for free download. no paywall, on SoundCloud, their website, etc.

LP stands for long player which is normally the length of a standard album 10 tracks or more. EP stands for extended player and it's shorter than the length of a normal album so around 2-6 songs 8 at most. A mixtape can be as many songs as it wants it's normally made up of throw away tracks from the artist and songs that aren't mixed and mastered properly. Normally the tracks have no connection to each other it's just fun stuff for the fans.

mostly mixtapes are little albums with sometimes used beats.

    Tracks get sample
    Lyrics get sample
We all grew up with many inspirations so I’ll call this video that he was inspired.
Same way Nas Illmatic was inspired with so much jazz but we wouldn’t call it stealing. Same way J Cole used Biggie lines on three different tracks inspired. Everyone in 90s had sample beats and sample lyrics

I’ve been listening to logic for years now and now I feel like he’s being very egotistical.

    Everyone borrows ideas from everyone
The truth is that every thing you know
is borrowed hence the term being "influenced"

    I agree 100% with this!
But some people are so focused on what’s original and what’s not- that they have correlated what’s “un original “ to “not being good “
For example I wasn’t into rap at all. Until I listened to logic .
And because of that , I started to explore more.
I Moved on to cole, kendrick, gang star!
    Shit like that.
Yet I still dont fuck with most rappers music because what they stand for or speak about is boring and repetitive (bitches money and drugs)
Logic is simply taking something good and making it even better.
That’s why people gravitate to him.
most rappers can’t keep my attention 🤷🏻‍♂️

His lyrics are so 1 dimensional. You really can’t pick it apart. He’s just very shallow to me
