- Founder and CEO of Hyliion, Thomas Healy led a press conference and ACT Expo 2023, where he covered the Hypertruck ERX powertrain qualifying as an NZEF under California’s recently passed Advanced Clean Fleet rule, as well as other certification and commercialization updates.
He was later joined by Chief Engineer, Josh Mook to unveil our KARNO technology to the world for the very first time. A fuel agnostic generator that can operate on over 20 different fuel types, the KARNO generator reduces emissions and noise pollution, provides an increase in efficiency, and requires only minimal maintenance.

A guaranteed long term win
Fantastic plan, please execute 🙏
This is truly an amazing technology.
😂 umm I discovered the same tech over decade ago, open sourced it as the h-cat hydrogen catalytic heat reactor technology 😳 😐 😄

I hope they have a patent on that. I saw some chinese people close by :(

Karno is a potentially huge game changer for trucking & stationary E power needs. I'm getting more shares!!
Where are the : 'Woooow Yeahhh Hiihhaaa applausss....' ? So many things said that are unique in his segment, and public death. Tesla Elon Musky says ,' it has tyres of 10 inches large now' Public going crazy and applauding, you can see thet Hyliion and Healy are serious people working to achieve somthing the world really needs!!
Has he checked the price of natural gas lately? He has been saying $0.07 kWh for sometime now which assumes that to be a fully amortized cost including fuel and Karno but throws out $0.29 kWh as a recent price as a comparison. Keep it real and do your company a favor! Maybe a graph of Karno electrical cost as a function of NG cost.
Any external-combustion engine is fundamentally fuel-agnostic: the engine just needs heat, and if you get that from burning fuel it doesn't matter to the engine what the fuel is. Of course the fuel handling and burner components must work with the desired fuel, so - for instance - a diesel and hydrogen combination would not be very good. In this case they're just switching between two gaseous fuels (hydrogen and natural gas) so it's easy.
For those not familiar with engine types, steam engines and Stirling engines use external combustion.
The ACF Regulation requires fleets that are well suited for electrification to reduce emissions through requirements to both phase-in the use of Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) for targeted fleets and requirements that manufacturers only manufacture ZEV trucks starting in the 2036 model year.
Seems i may jus have to increase my shares 🤔
👍🏻👍🏻
There is no clear explanation of the Karno engine cycle. Yes, heat makes gas expand, but then it must be cooled and contract in a cycle to drive the piston. It is apparent that this design is dependent on two opposed engine sections with a common shaft so that the expansion phase of one engine can drive the compression phase of the other, but how does it actually cycle? Does it depend on resonance of the complete system of the two engine sections?
A Stirling engine uses a displacer (normally a piston out of phase with the working piston) to move the gas between heating and cooling areas, but the Karno does not appear to have a displacer.
Each Karno unit is a (roughly) 20 hertz linear vibrator. The mounts to isolate that from the chassis must be interesting.
There is also the question of how heat is rejected. What cools the cooling section?
14:00 Why does it show karno inside the windmill? That doesn't make sense to me
could be to demonstrate load balancing for renewables?
It doesn't make any sense at all. Some graphic artist apparently stuck them in without understanding the subject.
And by the way, they're "wind turbines". A "windmill" uses wind power to grind grain, like those antique things in Holland.

ERX is not "fully electric"; it is plug-in series hybrid. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with series hybrid, but calling it "fully electric" is misleading.
The modular or flexible system is true of any series hybrid.

how many trucks have they produced so far?

They don’t produce trucks!
Hyliion does not manufacture trucks. Their business model is to build powertrains for other companies to use in their trucks.
@@brianb-p6586Exactly, just like Cummins.
