I think that some miss why criterion is important. They bring films that are not always “blockbuster” or “American English” to physical media. Not to mention their steaming app. I always tell folks that Criterion is here to broaden your world of cinema. My choices for must haves, that will enrich your life are: Le Samourai Army of Shadows Ivan’s Childhood Days of Heaven The Human Condition Shoah Memories of Murder Mr.Klein Anatomy of a Fall The American Friend Barry Lyndon
Agree, and sometimes it’s impossible or extremely difficult to get special features for these titles that are already obscure enough. It’s unfair to compare this against studio offerings and some of those trashy horrors that I’m sure the people involved would be super elated to do an interview and be validated for their work, versus an 70-year-old movie from India where all the people involved are probably dead and very little to none archival features exist since films aren’t well documented at the time, or that the film wasn’t even mainstream to begin with.
I highly recommend Paper Moon. I saw it on DVD nearly 20 years ago and was extremely impressed. I’m glad I held out for a 4K. I think it’s a movie most people will enjoy.
When I teenager, I saw it twice opening week. An employee at the theater let me have the one sheet poster, which I still have (rolled and in mint condition).
If you’re looking for a good time with schlocky horror, you’re certainly won’t find it with Criterion. Admittedly, it is kind of a bit of a “homework” indulging in the films Criterion is promoting. If you are interested in film history or exploring the fringes of the cinematic arts, there isn’t any place better, I feel. As great as Arrow, Shout and other boutique labels are, I’m fully aware that they are also populist in nature. It’s very unlikely that they’d be releasing films by Bergman, Truffaut, Cassavettes, Wenders, Melville, Campion, etc. and that’s why we need Criterion for that.
I quite like Criterion’s packaging, their standard clear plastic case is my favorite over the regular blue Blu Ray case that everyone else uses. And while not my favorite package format, their digipacks are usually very nice; their Godzilla digipack is a favorite. One nitpick I do have is that I wish it was easier to tell at a glance which ones are 4Ks
Might not be everyone’s cup of tea genre wise, but my favorite Criterion collection I own is the Before trilogy by Richard Linklater. All 3 films. Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. One of my favorite trilogies of all time and a great Blu-ray release.
I noticed this on AMAZON a few days ago because they were recommending so many at fifty percent off so at some point I realized Amazon is price matching the Barnes & Noble sale and the DVD's are $14.99! Yeah, it's a DVD, but it's still Criterion! So far, I picked up Leave her to Heaven, Notorious, The Graduate, Nothing but a Man, Roman Polanski's Macbeth and The Roaring Twenties, and I didn't even break the piggy bank! 🎬
I'm sad there was no David Lynch films in there. They got the digipack treatment and are awesome. I mean Blue Velvet at the very least. Otherwise, good vid!
Really enjoyed this Criterion video, do another please, thank you! Have seen a few hundred Criterion titles, mostly on The Criterion Channel past few years, and own several dozen Criterion blu-rays. Oh yes, Bound 4k I recently got and it is fantastic. Most of the others you highlighted are ones I've been eyeing. A few of my Criterion titles you must own....The Great Beauty, Until the End of the Word, Local Hero, Barry Lyndon, Blood Simple, Blow Up, The Double Life of Veronique, The Piano, 8 1/2, The Servant, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Tampopo, IL Sorpasso, I Knew Her Well. I have to stop, I love so many, and so many more I want, but budget reins me in.
Here’s a list of titles from Kino Lorber that are apparently going out of print soon. All of them had prior blu ray releases from Criterion. There’s a good chance Criterion releases their own 4ks of them eventually. 12 Angry Men (4KUHD) Dressed to Kill (4KUHD) The Great Escape (4KUHD) In the Heat of the Night (4KUHD) Killer's Kiss (4KUHD) The Killing (4KUHD) The Manchurian Candidate (4KUHD) The Night of the Hunter (4KUHD) Paths of Glory (4KUHD) Some Like It Hot (4KUHD)
Interesting--I'd say a decent percentage of my physical media collection is Criterion, and the only one I own that you mentioned was Wall-E on 4K (nothing against your list--those are solid recs, and I'll pick up some of them at some point). But you did leave off three absolute must-owns from Criterion (in my most humble opinion): Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator and Modern Times, and Terry Gilliam's Brazil (all on blu ray, none out on 4K--at least not yet). I picked up what I wanted from this month's sale today: Videodrome and Demon Pond on 4K, and Pandora's Box on blu (would have liked that on 4K (I love the film and I love Louise Brooks), but I'll take what I can get).
I recommend their Terry Gilliam releases. Brazil, Time Bandits, and Fisher King. Three colors trilogy was one of my first purchases from them and they’re great art house type films. They’re very accessible tho especially Blue. Everyone I’ve shown that one to loved it
Because the B&N sale is all month long, I’m going wait to place an order (if any) it’ll depend on how much I spend on upcoming Black Friday sales. I might get a couple of Hitchcock movies, Rebecca and Notorious, I’ve been building up my Hitchcock collection this past couple of years. Or I might get Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid 4K. To be honest I’m trying to cut back on buying movies, because I’ve spent a lot this past few years. And I’m guessing prices aren’t going to go down anytime soon, so next year I’m going to have to pick & choose what I really want to buy and try to hold myself firmly to a budget
Blow Out is an absolute banger! Great recommendations and breakdowns as always. You can see Menace II Society without watching Boyz N the Hood as well. Double Indemnity is a classic, check out The Apartment along with Arsenic and Old Lace.
I have most of these although not the Criterion versions. I probably wont upgrade unless its 4K. I do hope the rumored Godzilla Heisei series box set is coming. I hear their Showa set did good in sales.
Like another longtime buyer of Criterion releases, they have definitely been resting on their laurels the last couple of years when it comes to special features. They used to be the best when it came to the quantity and quality of their special features. But I still purchase my Criterion’s because they tend to release the movies I want to see. Some titles I would recommend are: ‘Before Trilogy’ ‘The Last Picture Show’ Defending Your Life’ ‘The Graduate’ ‘Philadelphia Story’ ‘All About Eve’ ‘Risky Business’ ‘My Own Private Idaho’ ‘Bull Durham’ ‘Princess Bride’ & ‘Desert Hearts’
Another great Criterion pick-up is the film The Thin Red Line. It has one of the best 2K scans I've ever seen. It, to me, looks better than a lot of 4K's. It is so perfect. The movie is really great also.
Have Raging Bull, WALL-E, After Hours, in my wish list already is Double Indemnity, and just added Blow Out to my wish list based on your recommendation, but will give the rest a swerve...
@@Joooools5000 if anyone is a fan of the look of the Godfather this is a great pick up, cause it’s the same cinematographer. Plus it’s got De Palma vibes minus the Transphobia. Excellent suggestion.
Awesome list. I had all the movies but Menace II Society, and I will pick that one up. I also have Fast Times and Double Indemnity, but as blu rays and not from Criterion, though I am going to pick up the DI 4K from Criterion during this sale. BTW, if you like Double Indemnity, take a look at the 80's film Body Heat, written and directed by Big Chill's and Empire Strikes's Back Lawrence Kasdan and starring Kathleen Turner and William Hurt. Kasdan used Double Indemnity as his template and fashioned a superb thriller that, IMO, is the equal of Double Indemnity. As for Criterion movies, my list includes most of yours, but I would suggest Blood Simple Seven Samurai The Night Porter Notorious (The Hitchcock version) The In-Laws Stagecoach Sweet Smell of Success The Fisher King To Be Or Not To Be All That Jazz Don't Look Now Time to order some movies. Thanks for the list!
I had one of my best first time viewings of the year tonight with the Criterion blu-ray of Chilly Scenes of Winter. I picked it up during the flash sale. If you appreciate High Fidelity, this movie feels like a clear inspiration to it.
Fantastic recc's. I have about half of them already. The only one I can afford to put money on is Gregg Araki's _Teen Apocalypse Trilogy,_ because it's not dual-format so I have to snag both the 4K and the Blu-ray. That's about $100, even with the sale.
You forgot a couple, Ken. Perfect Days is an absolute must own as well. Easily in my top 5 favorite films of all time. It's a true masterpiece. The second one you forgot to mention is Dazed and Confused. Classic 90s comedy. Blow Out is great. I watched it yesterday as a matter of fact. The 4k transfer really is spectacular and it's filmed in my home town so I guess that makes me a bit biased. Menace 2 Society really is their best packaging IMO. They did a great job with it and def one of the better films of the 90s. After Hours is one of my favorite Scorsese films as well though I've noticed people seem to be torn on this one. I feel like it's one of those you either absolute love it or hate it kinda films.
Criterion is special because they probably have the greatest collection of films of all the boutique labels. The more you learn about film the more you realize how many actual classics criterion has. They have a ton of amazing films by directors like Fellini, Hitchcock, Kubrick, robert Aldrich, Billy wilder, David Cronenberg, the coen brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, david lynch, Terry Gilliam, David fincher, orson Welles, Guillermo del toro, etc. it’s not all deep cut artsy fartsy bs, they just have a lot of great films and classics that entry level audiences may just not be as familiar with, doesn’t mean these films aren’t amazing.
The first thing you think of when you mention the great Joe Pantoliano is Bad Boys!? He was only one of the greatest roles of all time in the Sopranos. Won an Emmy

That might be fine for more recent films that were shot digitally (and are projected digitally -- though just a few years ago even movie theaters were projecting in 2K rather than 4K), but I really don't need my movies reprocessed and "polished up" for viewing in 4K resolution. Frankly, sometimes the DVD releases look more like the way these films did when they were originally released. That's not so bad, is it?
Criterion typically uses nice Scanavo cases or a quality digipack. Most come with a booklet, poster, or both. They're not falling off as a company because they don't make $60 Second Sight releases.
