- In this video, I show you how to program key fobs for a 08 Dodge Ram. I have to program these keys because the truck will not start or stay running if it does not recognize the key you put in the ignition. You can cut a key but that is only the second step. When I cut keys I always cut from the vin code at the dealer so I get the best possible key. If you cut your new keys with a old key it maybe wore out and not work in the ignition. This does not work if you or someone else changed out the ignition tumbler. This program is easy and you will need 2 stock ignition keys to program any other keys. You can program up to 8 keys in total.

Just swap out the pc board from the old key to the new key. No reprogramming is necessary then. This also helps if you only have one of the original keys

I bought a red one like that but I only have a black key fob and a just a key itself will it still work?
You have to have 2 programmed keys to program any other keys. The dealership will have to do the programming if you only have one key.
so do i have to have two original key fobs in the truck to program another? my truck only came with one key.
@kennyd.2756 Yes, this requires two working key fobs to program more keys. Otherwise, the dealership must program the keys if you only have 1 key fob.
I can’t get my oem remote starter won’t work Only getting the lights to flash but no start
I have both original key fobs. Both will start my engine and it will keep running. On one of the key fobs, the lock/unlock, remote engine start and panic buttons do not work. Since they both start and the engine keeps running, can I use them both to reprogram a new remote, even though the one doesn't work on the door locks, remote engine start and panic buttons?
What year is your truck? My truck did not have remote start. If your truck is newer than 2009 the dealership will have to program the key fobs.
@@BadWrenchAuto It is a 2008 RAM 5.7L HEMI. By the way, the key that doesn't work for locks/start/panic, does work for the ignition to keep the truck running. Was thinking that since it starts the truck with the key, perhaps it is still good for programming. Not sure though.
@@georgehinkle5642 if it doesn't get the code from the old keys then the programming may not take. Did the batteries die in your old keys?
@@BadWrenchAuto Checked the batteries & they were good for both remotes. I did put a new battery in the remote that wasn't working & it still didn't work. I did go to a locksmith & they said as long as the truck started with the non-functional remote, it could still be used to program a new remote. I'll give that a try.

Also you didn't clearly identify which keys you were using at each step or how the process changes with different amount of keys
The first working key fob you put in and count the seconds is just IGN ON not start right?
Does this work for keys with no keyless entry.
This is only for Keyless entry models.
When I buy replacement key fobs I like to get red ones or blue ones because they are a lot easier to find

Yes, if the key is not programmed, then the truck will not start.

Locksmith cut the extra Amazon key and it will start and run the 2011 Dakota, however, the lock and unlock does not work. Any ideas?
Yes you can try to relearn the key, to get the learn process go to remotesremotes.com and enter your year make and model. I will tell you if you have to have it dealer programmed.

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 and I have an invalid key code and now my truck will not start I have the only key and it is not reading I replace the battery in the key and it still won't read it. What do I do to get it to read it?
If you don't have 2 working keys, then the dealership or an automotive locksmith will have to program it.

Yes, you need 2 different programmed keys to program any more keys. You can program up to 8 keys on one vehicle. If you don't have a second programmed key you will need to have the dealership program the second key.

You might have reached the maximum number of key fobs. The computer can only store 8 key fobs.
I've just done this on my 2006 3500 Cummins and it doesn't work. There's no red light blinking whatsoever
The timing of this is very exact, the truck must also be 08 and older. 09 has a redesign.

What if the original key doesn't work
Then, the dealership will have to program the keys. Some dealerships will do this service if you are doing other repairs.

You will need to find a good dealership to program the second key. They have to pull the factory key codes from the computer to program the key fob. Bad dealerships are trying to take advantage of car owners so you may have to try a few dealerships to get it done. A good locksmith should be able to do this as well.

I changed my battery on my key fob and now the buttons don’t work I even cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and still nothing. Could you do you video on that?
Check the battery connection points they might be damaged during the battery change. If you got alcohol on the circuit board then it might have done damage to it.
The clear plastic, turn it over... to the other side, so that the black points touch the green board...
@@pauljohn6546 I don’t see any clear plastic, there wasn’t any when I used it either.
Check the tabs that hold the battery in and the ground point. If it is not making good connection the key fob will not work. Also check the circuit board for any damage.

I have BBK shorty headers and a mid muffler delete. Still has the cats and rear resonator.
Does anything change in this process if I have factory remote start (aside from ordering the correct fob)?
From my research, the remote start was not a factory option until 09 and up. Those did have to be programmed by the dealership, unfortunately.
I have two questions. How do I program my 08 Ram so the horn doesn't beep when locking with my fob
My other question is what would make the display on my am/fm cd sat radio be so dim I can see during the day
I think on Ram, the horn is a standard feature. Mine did the same thing. The radio being dim, usually means that the radio display is going out. If your lights are not on then the bright display is burned out. It is the first thing to burn out on the display.
I recently purchased a 2006 Dodge ram 1500 and it only came with 1 gray key, no key fob. What would be your recomendation on ordering keys and prodgramming.
I would order new key fobs and see if you can program them yourself. If not you might have to have the dealership do it.

Unfortunately, Ram is weird this way you most have 2 programmed keys to program any more keys. This is a bad design but you will need go to a dealership to get the 2nd key programmed.

Yes you will need 2 already programmed keys to program the 3rd. Knowing this I will always program extra keys.

do u know if it’s possible to get a fob and power locks for a base model cummins? it just has one key that i use to lock and unlock doors.
You will need 2 keys to program more keys this is a Flaw with Ram key fobs.

It only will work with 2 keys. Unfortunately only the dealership or a locksmith to program the second key.
Any idea what it cost to have a new fob made? $500 for the computer to make one key is a bit much for me. I bought a used charger and it only came with one key. The dealer won’t make a second and says they charge too much he doesn’t recommend it. I didn’t think of it before I put the down payment on it. I have a 2018 charger key and the new charger is a 2021.
I would check around for prices and check a different Dodge dealership or a local locksmith. That is extremely expensive for getting a new key. Maybe if it's a hellcat.

You could just have a died battery or the circuit board in the key fob might be bad. You should be able able to buy a new one but you will need to program it.

Was it the right key fob for your vehicle? I just looked up that some vehicle have a rf receiver and if that is not getting power or shorts out then no one will be able to make it work with out fixing that first. 🤔

What if I only have one key? I lost one
The dealership or a locksmith will be the only way to program the second key. This is why I will always program 3 or 4 keys for any Dodge Ram.
I do have only 1 programmed key
Then I would try the programming with just the one key, the code will be the same for all the keys. Let me know if that works for you so I can add that info to a future video. 😉

😑 nope, made a whole video on it. Need to have 2 keys already programmed for this to work. If I get any more info I'll make a video on it but as of right now you will need to go to a dealer or a mobile locksmith to program the 2nd key.
I'm down to 1 program key because I accidentally start the new one my 07 ram.. I made a copy from the door/ign key...now my button key (ignition only) ending up unprogrammed because of that... and way before that.. the buttons on the key stopped working recently.. thought it was the battery (nope).. the motherboard still good... so idk.... I did replace my battery recently so idk... somebody help me out lol

I good dealership or locksmith can pull the factory code and program the second key fob. This takes a specific computer to get the code and program the second key fob.

If you can find a good locksmith they might be cheaper. Unfortunately on Dodge you have to have two factory keys. 😔
They charged me 262$ for the same key fob as in the video.
The dealer prices are only going to go up from here on. I am trying to share as much knowledge as I can to help everyone save money.

I have a Ram 1500 with keyless ignition and I can't find out how to reprogram a spare fob. I've got one working one that came with the truck but I didn't get a second so is there a way to program a spare fob on the keyless ignition?

@@BadWrenchAuto Audi is really easy, you simply Place both fobs one in the door and one in the ignition and then vice versa.
Unfortunately after 2009 you will need to have the dealership or a locksmith program the key fob.
@@BadWrenchAuto damn that sucks, I watched a video where I guy used in OBD2 port reader and some app and then paid $25 to get the code with the app and then he was able to do it that way. But I think what he had was an actual key Style. Maybe I can find a ram technician to do it on the side I don't know I guess they charge $100 to program and $75 for the fob. I bought a couple on Amazon that look exactly identical but they don't have the ram logo. I don't know how you can sell a truck from the dealer without a second fob but I guess the previous owner didn't give it up.

Thanks for the video. I was able to program two new keys for a 2005 Durango. The locksmith, who I had cut my keys, said I could not program myself. I got the keys from a Walmart pro-seller. I like using Walmart because I can return it to Walmart if they don't work. BUT THEY DID!! Thanks again.
