I use Amarillo in a 4% ABV wheat beer added steeped for 20 minutes into the Krausen 2 days into fermentation. Most refreshing summer beer. Flavor is at first slightly grassy/lemony, but moved during maturation more into lemon/grapefruit.
Its sort of adhoc depending on the AA content of the hop being used in these experiments. John usually takes on ounce and divides it by thirds in a one gallon batch. The additions are usually 60min, 10 and 0min for that one ounce. Cheers! -Mike
I was just sampling a beer that I made with solely Amarillo, for the first time. I was worried about the flavor. As I looked it up and found this, sounds pretty accurate to what I'm tasting. Mine definitely taste more like grapefruit than orange, and I only hit 24 IBUs as well, my mistake there, that has also thrown off the balance for me. Thanks for the info and settling my mind a bit lol. I was thinking I had off flavors at first, but it could just be that this is such a different hop than what I'm used to tasting.
Yeah, it was American 2-row. I try to stay away from malts that bring detectable flavors to the beer. I brew my SMaSH beer with Pilsner of 2-row malts (either/or). - John
thanks guys , i havnt done smashes but now i think i will, but i would like to do small ones which turn out around 4.7 to 5 % is this pos ? i have some grains from irland , minch i think and wonderd if you have any idea as to what hop to try.. cheers Hic*
Love these videos I'm new to brewing and these smash videos gave me great ideas on hops to look into
Glad you like them. We will be making more.
Love these vids. Keep 'em coming!
+Rusty Ironloins Great - we will need to brew a few more SMaSHs to get more videos going.

Right on and brew on! - John
I know I'm late to this party, but what grain did you use? Just american 2 row? What do you think about straight maris otter as the grain?

Sounded like Robert Johnston on the slide guitar. Great smash and update Cheers

Hey - we have more SMaSH beer tastings coming. Check out the playlist here: ruclips.net/video/LZ8--He0oT8/видео.html
Tasting an Amarillo smash I made - subtle yellow citrus flavour reminds me of Hoegaarden
That's interesting flavor profile. Cool. Cheers! -Mike
I'm wanting to do an Amarillo wheat ale with coriander seed and orange rind
Sounds perfect! Cheers! -Mike

+Dave Britton Any hop you want to learn about and experience in its full glory. Our SMaSH are around 5% ABVs
guys how much grain would you use
to make a 5 to 6 % smash ? leaving you
a one gallon end total beer to drink.. Hic*
+Dave Britton try 2lbs two row and mash at 153*
I always got an orange juice feel from them
I get that when the hops are as fresh as possible. Hard as a homebrewer though to control for that. Cheers! -Mike
