It’s a hard movie story wise. It is essentially too real. It’s the naked lunch at the end of your fork. Most movie goers want an escape from reality. This movie made us question what we would do if possessed by Wendigo and craved human flesh like it was heroine. Hence Robert Carlyle from Trainspotting was a great fit. Then Guy Pearce being a vegetarian gave the protagonist character the right amount of disgust at his craving for flesh. Basically top performances from the entire cast. Which usually means the Director really knew her stuff. By the way I saw it as a young man when it came out. I’ll never forget this movie.
A lot of great movies fly under the radar at times. If the subject matter doesn't seem like it would appeal to the masses, it's kinda ignored or doesn't get a lot of publicity to get more people to notice. So people don't even hear about it til much later on.
I loved the concept of healing through cannibalism. That was the main attraction for this movie and the time period. The cast was phenomenal as well. It's a hidden gem I was even skeptical about this movie until I watched it. I love it even more now.
Alfred Packer was absolutely not debunked. They found the bodies in 1989: "All five of the skeletons had numerous differing post-mortem injuries to them, including depressed fractures, butterfly fractures, butchering trauma, and hacking trauma, which seems to contradict Packer's claims of "minimal cannibalism"."
I remember seeing the commercials for this film on tv, but I was still 16 at the time of its release. It came and went and I forgot about it. Then, fast forward to 2010 and a friend of mine showed me his dvd collection and he had it. I immediately remembered wanting to see it and borrowed it right away. It was exactly what I was expecting it to be and what I wanted it to be. Now, the blu ray sits on my shelf like a trophy.
I was 15 when I rented this on VHS. When the credits rolled I immediately pressed rewind and watched it again. I don't think I've ever done that with any other movie before or since.
"He was licking me!" I'll never forget that line from the trailer. I wanted to see it, but somehow missed it in theaters. I ended up renting it and liked it enough that I got it on VHS. I actually never found it on DVD, but I did get it on Blu-ray last year! I do believe I like it even more than I did over 20 years ago.
Robert Carlyle was one of my go to actors at the time. The music score was perfect. I absolutely loved this film. I watched it a few years ago. And it still holds up well.
I saw this in theaters opening weekend because I read a review that called it reprehensible and gruesome. That is an absolute recommendation for me! Nobody I have ever introduced to it have not loved it.
This movie was excellent. I’m thinking they didn’t market it well. I didn’t even hear about it until years later. My hubby whom I had started dating told me I had to watch it.
One of my favourite movies, and absolutely and underrated gem. I don't think it is much of a horror movie though, and trying to sell it as such might be a mistake. I always considered it more of a very dark and understated comedy with an odd and disturbing atmosphere. The performance are amazing though, and the music is one of a kind.
A brilliant movie! A profound allegory on Manifest Destiny and evolution of the USA very few could grasp...Music unique, director - genius, cast impeccable! Original movie and another golden addition to 1999 - one of the best years in cinema history.
I was in my first year of studying when this came out. My excitement for this was at an all time high. In fact, the Friday it got released here in South Africa I skipped class to see the first showing and it was worth the skipping of class. Such a great movie
Love this underrated film, and I certainly consider it horror. Was glad when Shout released the bluray and glad to have it, any horror collector should.
I thought this was based on packer and not the Donner party. 1999 was good year for horror that's for sure but I love this movie so much. It's even got the poor man's Ray liotta in it, Neil McDonough.
I recommend this movie all the time. If someone I know has a passing interest in horror, westerns, period movies or just quality shit... Watch Ravenous. An unforgettable film, if you actually watch it.
The music in this movie is soo good and i love this movie...anyone i've told to this has liked it so it's mind blowing that no one barely knows this movie
Got it on DVD back in the day. Damn good movie and the soundtrack absolutely ruled. All that country twang and string but it would shift from quaint and peaceful to horror or super dark humor on command.
I remembering watching this as a teen, as a vhs rental. I remember not liking it at all. I was all about the “pop horror” of the time, like scream, I know what you did, and urban legends. All great horror movies in their own right, but this flick has by far aged the best. I watched it again last year and was blown away. If it came out today, it would have done so much better. An absolute hidden gem❤
I love the flick, but I can see how the dreary tone might turn some off. It's light on levity, which is fine to me, but most people like a laugh break after a tense scene. The funniest line in the movie was, "He was licking me!" Again, I dig the movie, but part of that is because it's different. Different attracts some, but turns off many.
I love this movie. I was primed for the release by coverage in Fangoria, and ended up going to see it twice in the cinema. It's been in by DVD library since the original Fox DVD release (right next to "Raw Meat" (US title) aka "Death Line" (UK title), the 1972 film with Donald Pleasence, featuring a cannibal in the London Underground... basically, a cannibal, humanoid, Underground dweller).
That picture of the real Packer makes him look like a combination of Charles Manson and Edgar Allen Poe.Not exactly someone I would trust with my life.
❤ I put this movie up there with Brotherhood of the Wolf, where no one had heard of it but saw it later and the reaction was the same WOW. I saw this one at the theatre loved it going to have to get the blue ray.❤❤❤
This was a fun, creepy, exiting action film. I'm surprised to hear that it was not well received or more popular. My only criticism is that I wanted to see the 'Boyd' character survive and lead the fort.
One of my favourite movies ever. Box office numbers really don’t mean anything in a world made primarily of morons. Look how well marvel has done. Ugh.
I remember the commercials for it on tv and wanted to see the movie, but it was in and out of the theater so fast I didn't get to. I had to wait for it to come out on DVD. It was as good as I had expected. I will never forget the line, "He was licking me!"
I LOVE this movie, but I didn't even see it for the first time until over 10 years it came out. I don't remember seeing any promotions for it at all in 1999.
This is a great movie, regardless if it made money or not. Ive watched it countless times. It just doesn't fit into any mold. Is it horror,? Kinda. Highly recommend 👍
I think this wouldve been played better as a straight horror movie instead of this weird horror comedy whose jokes didn’t land. An actual horror director may have helped as well.
I've seen ravenous a few times. The first time I seen it, I didn't like it. I watched it a few years later and liked it but didn't love it. Last time I watched it is when scream factory put out the blu ray and I still didn't love it but I feel like I like it more and more every time I revisit it.
I remember catching it on cable one day, and really enjoyed it! Learning who Carlyle was only after Trainspotting, I was so wanting to rewatch this fine flick so I could focus on him more the 2nd time around. BTW...that was a seriously 💩 list of films on Gosnell's part 💩👎🏼
You guys are giving me a really bad Deja Vu moment..... to the point where I'm starting to question my own sanity. Didn't you guys do this SAME EXACT video with another voice over a while ago!?!?!
I remember the commercials for this when it came out and it looked awesome. When I saw it I was less than impressed. Maybe I'll have to give it another go around
I always liked the first half of this movie, but fell apart in the second half for me. The humor never worked for me, but I guess it was only way to diffuse the cannibalism.
I wish the movie all the best, I really do. It is not for me, only due to the topic of cannibalism. Sorry I just cant with that 😅I'm still new to the horror genre. I like to play it safe with the straight forward slashers and splatters, suspense and psychological thrillers and spillers, monster movies. Perhaps one day I will try it. Maybe.
I had lamb early in life and thought, wow pretty good.. Then recently had so called great lamb.. I also spit it, I was disgusted.. the taste was so over whelming, I thought about the animal and its slaughter and I was horrified. The connect to the death was so potent and sickening.
much better than the CRAP under the marvel franchise. If analysis is based on box office hits, then go ahead and praise marvel trash. This movie was pretty good!
I adore this movie.
The dark humor, the acting, the gore.
One of my favorite, horror period pieces.
I'll never understand why this isn't a huge hit, such an amazing movie.
It’s a hard movie story wise. It is essentially too real. It’s the naked lunch at the end of your fork. Most movie goers want an escape from reality. @@RobDaCajun i had a copy on VHS I picked up since fangoria was praising it and loved it, I was shocked to find out it was a bomb
A lot of great movies fly under the radar at times. If the subject matter doesn't seem like it would appeal to the masses, it's kinda ignored or doesn't get a lot of publicity to get more people to notice. So people don't even hear about it til much later on.
It really is. I watched it at way too young of an age.
Because it came out at the same time as The Matrix.
I loved the concept of healing through cannibalism. That was the main attraction for this movie and the time period. The cast was phenomenal as well. It's a hidden gem I was even skeptical about this movie until I watched it. I love it even more now.

I would make my girl watch this and during that scene, say" how many night's in prison I woke up screaming this
This movie was and still is one of my favorites. It is awesome.
Robert Carlyle was one of my go to actors at the time. The music score was perfect. I absolutely loved this film. I watched it a few years ago. And it still holds up well.
Robert Carlyle and cannibalism. What's not to love?
This movie is hugely underrated. Everybody I've introduced it to feel the same way.
I saw this in theaters opening weekend because I read a review that called it reprehensible and gruesome. That is an absolute recommendation for me! Nobody I have ever introduced to it have not loved it.
Ravenous is my second favourite 90s Horror after From Dusk Till Dawn it's excellent and all the cast are great in it.
Will you ever hear a soundtrack like that again? Not a chance. ".............run!"😁
This movie was excellent. I’m thinking they didn’t market it well. I didn’t even hear about it until years later. My hubby whom I had started dating told me I had to watch it.
I saw this in the theatre. A noon show on opening day. I was the only one there. I loved it
One of my favourite movies, and absolutely and underrated gem. I don't think it is much of a horror movie though, and trying to sell it as such might be a mistake. I always considered it more of a very dark and understated comedy with an odd and disturbing atmosphere. The performance are amazing though, and the music is one of a kind.
I was working at a movie theater at the time, and I remember the lack of business for it. Such a shame. I loved it! And that score, oh man. So good.
Glad you mentioned the soundtrack. I still listen to "Boyd's Journey" every few months.
Such an incredible movie slipped by. I seen this when it came out and I was blown away by its simplicity, comedic undertones and top notch acting.
A brilliant movie! A profound allegory on Manifest Destiny and evolution of the USA very few could grasp...Music unique, director - genius, cast impeccable! Original movie and another golden addition to 1999 - one of the best years in cinema history.
Ravenous and Bone Tomahawk are a Incredible double feature and I pare them up for a solid showing for friends and family during holiday visits.
I was in my first year of studying when this came out. My excitement for this was at an all time high. In fact, the Friday it got released here in South Africa I skipped class to see the first showing and it was worth the skipping of class. Such a great movie
Breakfast, lunch, reinforcements.
Love this underrated film, and I certainly consider it horror. Was glad when Shout released the bluray and glad to have it, any horror collector should.

So many good actors. Bone Tomahawk has the same feel
My thoughts exactly!
@@Candyohh Right? 👋
I've had the DVD for 20 years, such a quirky and good movie and the soundtrack is amazing.
I saw Ravenous when it came out in theaters and loved it. It was definitely something a little different....in a good way.
I recommend this movie all the time. If someone I know has a passing interest in horror, westerns, period movies or just quality shit... Watch Ravenous. An unforgettable film, if you actually watch it.

It was like Cannibal the Musical but without the music and jokes.
It's not for everyone but if period drama thrillers are your thing, it's worth a view.
Love this movie. Extremely underrated.

That is such a great scene in Ed Wood.
Robert Carlyle I loved Him In Trainspotting And 28 Weeks Later.
Am I tripping or did y'all not release this video a few days ago?
Got a aggressive Copyright claim
Bought the DVD! Well done movie!
Excellent film. The villain was charismatic and his message creepy.
I love this movie. One of my favorite horrors, period.
One of the very best movies made.
Saw it, loved it.
To me its a mystery why it did not do better.
Quintessential hidden gem.
One of my favorite movies. Ever.
Antonia bird would have been a good director for blood meridian
This is one of my favorite movies (and it makes me hungry every time)

FUQING GREAT REVIEW!! THIS MOVIE IS A PERFECT STORM OF A FILM! Then a perfect storm buried it...
One of my favourites!
Reupload?
I can't believe it was that long ago.
I have always loved this movie. Cannibalism wasn't a thing then but now it's common in many horror movies. I think a modern remake would be cool.
Nah I think it's good as it is. Remake? It only came out in 1999!
This is a great movie, regardless if it made money or not. Ive watched it countless times. It just doesn't fit into any mold. Is it horror,? Kinda. Highly recommend 👍
Its a damn good movie 🎬🎥 i love it 🧑🎄 Greetings from the Netherlands 👍
I remember watching this on hbo after release, it was on constantly.
Absolutely love this film!
I think this wouldve been played better as a straight horror movie instead of this weird horror comedy whose jokes didn’t land. An actual horror director may have helped as well.
In my Top 10 Horror movies.👍👍
I saw Ravenous on DVD when it first came out. Good movie.
Never heard of it. Now knowing the plot I wouldn't have been interested anyway. No loss
I wish we had a movie about the day to day life in the fort before it goes bad. Those were decent characters.
How could you not mention the incredible score?
They did...
I watched this at the theater when it came out and bought it on DVD. I like it, but it is definitely a strange film.
I could watch Robert Carlyle chow down in any century. Brilliant
I've seen ravenous a few times. The first time I seen it, I didn't like it. I watched it a few years later and liked it but didn't love it. Last time I watched it is when scream factory put out the blu ray and I still didn't love it but I feel like I like it more and more every time I revisit it.
great movie!
I thought it relied too heavily on the gore factor, it just seemed a little overdone
I remember catching it on cable one day, and really enjoyed it! Learning who Carlyle was only after Trainspotting, I was so wanting to rewatch this fine flick so I could focus on him more the 2nd time around.

At least there WAS fashion in '99. Every decade after just seems like a bland, unremarkable nothingness after the 90s.
I remember the commercials for this when it came out and it looked awesome. When I saw it I was less than impressed. Maybe I'll have to give it another go around
I only remember this movie having bad transition music. Too much on the trail music for no reason. You don’t need that for a horror movie.
I always liked the first half of this movie, but fell apart in the second half for me. The humor never worked for me, but I guess it was only way to diffuse the cannibalism.
Never saw this
I wish the movie all the best, I really do.

In what alternate London is that eastenders set because it's not this one 😁
I like this movie.
Atun-Shei is obsessed with this movie. 😂
I didn't know this movie existed until now, I'ma go check it out!
