  • For the first time, the nation’s oldest and largest law enforcement labor organization and the country’s oldest and largest fire fighter’s union united on Capitol Hill in an effort to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).
Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, and Ed Kelly, General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) stood on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol to demand that Congress consider and pass H.R. 82/S. 597, the “Social Security Fairness Act.”
“I hope that Congress hears the message from our police and fire fighters loud and clear today,” Yoes said. “The passage of the Social Security Fairness Act is long overdue. For 40 years, the trust fund has been balanced on the backs of our public servants. It is time for this injustice to end.”
“We are proud to partner with the nation’s largest law enforcement labor organization to shine a light on this unfair legislation that deprives public servants of their rightly earned retirement income. It’s time for Congress to act and repeal the WEP/GPO,” Kelly said.
The WEP affects workers who spent some time in jobs not covered by Social Security and who also worked other jobs where they paid Social Security taxes long enough to qualify for the benefits. Like the WEP, the GPO may reduce the benefit received by surviving spouses if these spouses also receive a surviving spousal benefit from a public pension. The “Social Security Fairness Act,” which has more than 300 cosponsors in the House and a majority of the Senate would repeal both the WEP and the GPO.
“WEP and GPO penalize and defund our firefighters and police officers. These people put their lives on the line to protect our communities and keep us safe - we should be taking care of them, not taking away their hard-earned retirement benefits" said Representative Garret N. Graves (R-LA). "Folks on the front line have been wrongly penalized by these deeply flawed, outdated penalties for decades; current policy gets it wrong, and it needs to be fixed. I am proud to lead the national effort to fully repeal both WEP and GPO and will continue to fight for Social Security fairness.”
“For years, I’ve been proud to help lead the ‘Social Security Fairness Act’ to make sure that police officers, firefighters, Federal workers, educators, and public employees across Virginia and across the United States receive the retirement security that they earned by dedicating their careers to serving their communities,” said Representative Abigail A. Spanberger (D-VA). “There is a strong consensus-among more than 300 Members of Congress across the political spectrum and a broad coalition of Americans-that public servants deserve the full retirement benefits they are currently being denied. I’m proud to continue working with Congressman Graves as we endeavor to protect the hard-earned Social Security benefits of retired public servants who earned them, press the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee to move this bipartisan fix forward by holding a markup on our ‘Social Security Fairness Act,’ and get this bipartisan legislation to the president’s desk as soon as possible.”

But it isn't wrong, you get a slightly better deal than normal folks now, but you want more.
You worked for a non-covered pension, not contributing the 6% to SS, so your pension is in lieu of SS. SS it progressive, that is, low earners get a larger replacement rate (max 90%) and higher earners get a lower replacement rate (28% if one is at MAX). Your FICA paying earnings are like a second/additional job. You want to start a 0 earning, for the second job; there is no such concept for normal folks, All of our earning are lumped together to determine our benefit. Because your gmvt earnings don't show, you look like a low earner; but you aren't. When you look at how your additional earnings contribute to your SS benefit, you get 40% or more, The normal person, when he has additional earnings only gets 32%. You are already ahead. But the retirement organizations have lead you to victimhood, telling you that you deserve 90%. Take a good look at how benefits are calculated.

@@charleslemaire8137 but it is already factored into the amount I get, or am supposed to get. The amount I get is based on a calculation on the amount I paid in and the amount of quarters I have. They had my money for over 30 years.

      WRONG YOU ARE!!!
The teacher paying into the pension system has 11% taken away. Employer matches it.
Side part time jobs... roughly 6.5% employee pays into Social Security and the employer pays the other 6.5%.
IN THE REAL WORLD 🌎 the person who has 2 jobs, pays into BOTH SYSTEMS AS ITS AUTOMATICALLY TAKEN FROM EACH PAYCHECK EVERY PAY PERIOD. Just like every person, nobody with less than 10 years of contributing even qualifies for even a single penny. So you are penalized for working extra hard.
WHY BOTHER? ITS STOLEN MONEY 💰 FROM THE EXTRA HARD WORK AND AWAY FROM FAMILY AND FUN ACTIVITIES.
Imagine being a humble substitute teacher with no representation barely surviving. But you impoverished those who were willing to grind at 2 to 3 jobs decade after decade. 😢
      YOU SUCK!

Get your state to pay FICA, then WEP does not apply. Honestly, I don't care what the state pension pays, but SS should only pay a replacement relative to your total earnings; it is the state that hides your earning from SS.

Gosh...do you actually know the truth?!
If you pay into Social Security....it takes a decade of paying into it to qualify for a penny.
If you pay into pers or strs, it takes at least 5 years of contributing to be vested.
The double dipping, you moron, are those taxing the hell out of those who work 2 jobs.
Then they claim it's 🙄 you who double dip. F u F them

So far ,none of these men have become cosponsors. If anyone knows them, please make appeals on our behalf.

Officer Lee Bollinger describes exactly what most of us had to do to stay above water. I too worked numerous jobs before I became a Police Officer at age of 27, All of which paid into SS. Was also in the military and worked off duty details. This needs to be corrected.

Social Security replaces income depending on how much income was earned in the system with the assumption that all of ones income is used to make that determination. It seems that these organizations perpetuate the victim mentality that they are cheated, so they want more that others group.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but what will we find if we compare two gmvt folks with the same job (police, fire, teacher, whatever), same gmvt hours, but in different states so possibly different pensions as that's a local issue, where one that paid SS and one that did not. Additionally these two fellows worked the same non-gmvt hours at the same rate such that they paid the same FICA for those outside hours. Both would get whatever pension they earned.
I believe the one that worked for the state that paid SS would not have any issue collecting their SS, but because their gmvt pay would be included in their AIME, the outside income would be replaced at likely 32%, or perhaps 15%, if he was very industrious. In comparison, I believe fellow that worked for the state that did not pay SS, would have only his outside pay included in his AIME. This makes him look very poor relative to his actual condition, so the WEP would be applied to adjust his replacement for that outside income to 40%, maybe higher with some substantive income years. Not to mention, this fellow got to pocket that 6% (the other 6% was held by the cheap state/city/etc) and could have invested that. Oh, would I have liked to invest it, but that's not a choice.
So the fellow from the non-SS state making a higher replacement rate is in your group complaining to everyone that will listen, especially if they don't understand how SS works.
Note also that this same fellow makes more that we non-gmvt folks and again he wants more and calls that FAIRNESS.

Where it hurts is when a public employee retires and then works for 20+ years at a nonpublic job being forced to pay into soc sec and not being able to receive what they paid into. Many public employees work a second job and that job is a soc sec job. Public employees are not asking for a handout but rather fairness.
It is similar to a person working a soc sec job that pays a pension and that person is also receiving soc sec. upon retirement age.

    • @charleslemaire8137
      @charleslemaire8137 7 месяцев назад

@@jimanderson2676 - I suppose it hurts just as much as we regular folks piling our second jobs income into our AIME and getting a 32% (maybe 15% replacement. Note that you guys get a 40% replacement and you want 90%. My point is that almost nobody gets what they think they should from SS, unless they actually know how it works.
As for the similarity, anyone that pays FICA while earning that pension, deserves both, for example the military, some folks with big old companies (but they are become fewer and fewer).
Compare two workers from different states, one pays FICA the entire time, the other doesn't. Both work toward a retirement. Why should the fellow that pocketed the 6% get SS for that time?
The whole thing is a STATE issue. Get your state to use SS.

Please be quiet because you are thinking like the evil ones who created this WEP and GPO. They are gaslighting us to believe that what they are doing is fair. These public workers folks are not wanting anything they didn't pay into and have the required quarters to qualify for them and their spouse's social security. So please just please be quiet and don't comment because you don't understand unless it is happening to you.
