My friends and I talk about how we can still find an old CRT TV and the thing will turn on and work after 30 years, and yet modern ones can't seem to compete with that. Thank you so much, this was very informational! I could not figure out where the HDMI outlets were on the dang thing with the continuous frame! Now I know! I'm going to do an over the fireplace mount and I had a previous estimate of $1000 for a standard TV to run the electrical in the wall to the nearest outlet, which did not factor in re-plastering or paint. I can work with a tiny wire!

    • @geektoolkit

      On any estimate like that I'd get a few, and then make sure to ask them 'how would you solve this in your own house'. Sometimes they come up with an alternative that can save you a TON of money. It may be as simple as 'if you put the box here vs there it saves xyz dollars'.

    I bought the 2020, 65 inch about a month ago I bought it for the art mode and subscribe to the art gallery for me it was worth every penny. The TV mode is very, very good. My cable is mounted in the wall and not in conduit, I assume if it's installed by a contractor then they will follow code as the homeowner and installer I will do whatever I want. Bottom line if you're on the fence jump over and buy this art/tv. I wasn't disappointed and I'm thinking of buying the 43inch just for art mode and ambient mode.

    • @BlueWorld718
      @BlueWorld718 4 года назад +3

      Undefined name I’m about to buy the tv myself and run the cable in the wall but through a conduit. Majority of the reviews I’ve seen, people put the cable behind the wall with no conduit.
      However if the cable isn’t in wall rated more then likely it doesn’t matter what a contractor does. The kicker is, if a fire started due to the cable being in wall and you house burned down, you can kiss your check goodbye from your home or renter insurer. Very doubtful but that’s the risk I’m willing to take when I install mine.

      @@geektoolkit Great informative video. Are you saying you can do an in wall install through an exterior wall as long as you are feeding it through a conduit? Does it have to be a special conduit?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 года назад

      Thankyou! From what I’ve read it just has to be “in wall rated” conduit. I’m not an installer so I can’t speak beyond that sadly. But yes if it’s run through in wall conduit then it’s “to code”.

    QLED is just a marketing term for an LCD TV with a slightly fancy backlight. It’s just intended to sound like OLED, a superior display tech that Samsung doesn’t make (at least at TV sizes).

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 года назад

      I love OLEDs contrast ratio, but for this use the screen burn in would make it unusable for this scenario. LGs OLED gallery TVs really demonstrate this when they change every five seconds. While OLED is superior on contrast, there are trade offs (color vibrancy is another area). I’m the end like most tech I think it’s all about what works for the scenario. I love my frame TVs where I want artwork, but I look forward to upgrading to an LG OLED or even a laser short throw projector at some point :)

      I’ll get you added on steam it’d be fun to play sometime! As far as Samsung...they cover it if the serial number shows it’s in the warranty period. We actually got ours on EBay. If you get it from Samsung it’s a bit easier for them to provide service and I think it’s a bit quicker but they took care of me within a week. But that’s why the serial number was so critical for me. They recently had some models at Costco so that may be another option to look into for price/service (I’ve always had good luck with Costco)

    wow thats so great they made a wire so that instead of plugging the TV directly behind the TV in a recessed box, now there is a non-wall rated wire that you have to somehow have to hide. great idea

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  4 года назад

      Definitely not ideal. The other thing I wish they didn't do was put huge ends on it...if it was HDMI sized then existing conduit would be fine, but it's about 3x that width on the wide end. I do wish they'd either done the work to make it in wall rated, provide an optional one that is in wall rated, or made the ends smaller. That being said, for those that don't have a box wired, it is realy convenient, and having the box off to the side makes hiding components MUCH easier I find. I'm hoping more manufacturers get into this style because I feel like it would then evolve into a perfect system.

    A couple questions:
    -What’s is the highest rotation speed option for the art works
    -Can I upload my personal artwork remotely (different WiFi’s)

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 года назад

      When you say highest do you mean the fastest it can do? in frame mode it can go down to I believe 5 minutes..I'll have to double check. but it does have a slideshow mode that is different (my follow video talks abou tthat).
      You can upload your personal artwork i they're on the same network only. If you're not on the same network you can't control it at all. I was dissapointed about that myself.

    Great feedback, great TV, Great look, but my that seems to be mounted too high for TV watching.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  4 года назад +3

      You’re right it’s not an ideal height by any means, but it’s how the house was designed. It’s the only wall a TV would make sense on in our downstairs, but much better suited for a piece of art. And the max size we could get was 65” to fit in there. We decided we’d go big in our media room and get a projector eventually, and for this room the frame ended up being a great alternative to have a screen when we needed it. I do find when I’m watching standing up while doing dishes from the adjoining kitchen that it’s a nice height though :)

    • @rolfvellek
      @rolfvellek 4 года назад +2

      Not a criticism of the video or mount, but I despise house designs that force TV up above fireplace. A well designed home would have flexibility of a wall that is well suited to a large panel television at a moderate height.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  4 года назад +1

      @@rolfvellek Oh I totally agree. The rest of the house made up for it luckily, and it had an epic bonus room that I got to make into a makerspace/gameroom/theater, so I picked my battles on that one :)

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  4 года назад

      Great Choice Audio Video I hadn’t heard of them and just checked them out...amazingly cool! I think there’s a few problems though with this particular TV...this TV depends on a proprietary mount to make it flush with the wall....I believe that mount would make push it out and ruin the effect. Also this TV is not VESA compliant for mounting points...so you’d have to have an additional plate to adapt the holes. I think in the end unless you did a highly custom job I fear it wouldn’t work here

      Cool! I think it should be fine, we have windows and can lights in the room with ours and it’s been good for the 2019. Not sure if youre still looking at these comments, but whats up with the bright white line on the top left of the screen. It appears on a lot of images and it changes in length depending on what the TV is showing. it's not always there, like when the video ends it's not there. Is that a real artifact being displayed by the TV or is it some peculiar reflection happening that wouldn't normally happen. Thank you for the video!

    Now, if I can just decide between The Frame and the Q90T. The Q90T specs blow The Frame out of the water, but I'm not sure if it can do as good of a job as appearing as artwork. In theory, it should because it has ambient mode as well, and is even thinner than the frame. I wish I could talk to somebody who owned both and used it for that purpose. I'm not sure if there are small differences in his that works between them. I think the subscription service is only available to The Frame, but I'm not as worried about that. I can always upload my own artwork and not pay for their service.

    I’m wanting to mount this over a fireplace. Can I run the single cable through the wall and have everything plug in behind the wall (cable, cat5, power, etc) or are there some things that I would need accessible directly behind the tv on the fireplace? Thanks!

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 года назад +2

      That's actually the beauty of the design...there's a single wire (it's I think 2-3inches thick on the end) that you'd have to run, and then that goes to a 'box'. The box has all of the plugins on the back of it, including power. So if you can run a conduit big enough to get that wire through, then you can have everything plugged in off tot he side and have a very very clean setup

    Thanks for the detailed review and insights from your experience. It's a beautiful TV and as an art lover, this really should be my obvious choice but I also love watching movies with my hi-fi surround sound system. I still love The Samsung Frame concept and it is gorgeous looking but the price of admission is a bit steep considering the tech spec is a bit lacking compared with the Sony X900H (2020) and LG 90 Nanocell (2020). Only if I can have the tech spec of the Sony X900H (2020) with the gorgeous Samsung Frame display and The Art Gallery mode (and art subscription)...Life would be perfect.

    • @geektoolkit

      Yeah, I'm hoping that this 'form factor' takes off and that more companies offer a version. I heard LG was supposed to ship an OLED version, but I haven't seen an update on that yet. I'd like to have more options of brands and tech. I LOVE that my living room doesn't have an obvious TV, and I'm finding that having my family pictures up on the TV has been really really nice for ambiance. We can only hope either other TV makers jump onboard, or that TV tech in general just becomes more invisible. Some of the 4k UHD laser projectors are promising, but last I saw they're still 5k.
