I'm PhiDX, I play Tekken professionally for @ParagonFGC and ArcadeShock.
10% off at ArcadeShock.com: PHIDXGAMES123
I peaked Diamond 1 in League of Legends and focus on improvement philosophies for the casual player looking to get better!
And if you wanna start playing right away:
- What your jab string does
- mid poke
- low poke
- power low
- keepout button
- whiff punish button
- pressure button
- i10 & i15-16 punishes
- i11 & i15 ws punish
- a super shitty combo that works on every axis on every launcher, even if it only does like 40 damage
I had to start doing this because otherwise I'd just waste so much time trying to figure out everything before even hopping into the game.
Bro people spent half the beta just labbing lol. First day and a half was full of denied request. On the last day, I get matches like crazy but everyone knows the optimal and owned my ass like wtf.
@@YeahNaw you can go into combo challenges then you don't get requests
@@zanmato4453 Yes but you can't pin moves from the command list in there. So, a lot of people just stay in the queue and denied matches instead.
Strings also work for mixups and mind games, and I'd say punishment isn't needed until high intermediate since most players will let you run over them if you have consistent pressure 😂
@@KyeCreateslearn to punish instead of relying on pressure. i bloom when my opponent acts like raw pressure is all they need since i have learned punishments as one of the first things back then. raw pressure builds on mental frames, if you keep pressing the opponent will think you prob weren't that minus or even plus because who would mash like that if it's not thought out.
but it probably isn't. even in higher ranks it's all just vague flowcharts easily readable and even easier punishable but they just root that you don't know they're -14. also it's important to stop pressing. anything. my b1 ch launcher has been having a field day the past few days.
Learning a new character is like learning a new musical instrument. To get high level with a character you've got to devote a ton of time in practice and compliment it with real world experience. Don't think there are really any shortcuts but you've got some helpful tips. Mastery of a character is a constant journey. You can spend years on one character and still learn new things.
Best explanation I've seen so far 👍🏻
please bro give my brain a break
Why? That is the approach we are suppose to take in ANY Vs figthing game bro. Laziness to learn properly fundamentals before starting matches, lead to become a sandbag and most likely drop the game by frustration.
@@Yotanou dude go read a book
@@FGirao Who says you cant do both? Im just stating fact, you have to invest some of your time if you want to be good at a Vs figting game, there is no shortcut. If you not willing to do so its fine too btw lol but cant expect miracles in high level matches.
@@Yotanou dude im joking for fucks sake
@@YotanouNo no, he's correct to feel that way. Learning fighting games is a marathon, not a race. Not even the strongest Tekken players started out by treating the game like homework - they played matches and asked questions later. Tekken 8 is going to have a lifespan of 10 years, so unless you're trying to place top 64 at this year's EVO like the pros are, what's the rush?
You’ve been putting out the best videos this past weekend during the beta test. Thank you for all your work. 💪
It was a tough first day with Azucena. Then day 2 learned fundamentals and evolved with each match. Tekken 8 has easily accessible tools to help you learn moves despite not having a proper training mode in the beta.
Amazing teaching tool Phidx not only because i want to main azucena and you just helped me understand much better the character but as a newcomer to the franchise this certainly will help me develop good matchup knowledge in general when labbing
Not just pros who do this. I haven't played in tournaments in a long time so wouldn't consider myself a pro but I always take notes on all the key moves needed. Homing movies, good pokes, frame data, consistent optimal combos, i10/i12/i15 etc punishes. Day 1 I did this Azucena and when I ran matches I barely lost any games because of my knowledge on her moveset. I been doing spreadsheets for Tekken characters since Tekken 3 LMAOOO
@PhiDX this is awesome and as a matter of fact, I’m planning on learning Azucena so this should really help me out anyways, yes this should work for any character but, since I plan on using Azucena as my main, regardless of what other people think of me as a Tekken newcomer I don’t care, I’m playing who I think is fun to play and Azucena is definitely the most fun.
Amazing can you do a video for each character with this kind of summary breakdown, showing all the main things we need to know for them?
whats is the app you are using for notes?
This worked for me INSTANTLY.
2 months later
Someone at Tekken loves Latinas and coffee
yes but does the character i wan tto play have big ditties?
What program are you using to write in as you play the game at the same time?
Notepad++, it's just overlaid in OBS
Thank you so much!!
is there a reason you don't turn off the match making search when walking through these guides? lol. you can go to matching settings in the menu and turn off quick, player, ranked match for now and turn it on after
the beta didn't have practice mode
16:49 the last tedious part? I live for this shit. I would gladly take a class on Tekken characters lol
How filthy scrubby casuals ( me) learn new character instantly:
1. 1+2 grab
2. power crush
3. any char specific low
4. i12 punish
5. some launcher and the most basic of juggles
6. press random buttons, see what lands add it to the arsenal
7. progress
8. get blown up
9. learn new move
10. goto 6, once new all moves are learned goto 11
11. learn cheap thing
12. apply cheap thing
13. cheap thing doesn't work goto 11, if no more cheap things goto 14
14. learn tech trap, plus on block move
15. apply
16. understand that your overall character knowledge is much deeper
17. watch PhiDX video: "How the Pros Master New Characters INSTANTLY" and understand that scrubby ways take more time, should have just do 17 first...
We need more of this type of video
On how to learn faster, better and more systematic

First thought: Playing cracked Demo.
Great videos 🙏🏻
❤
Wow dude. I think youre the azucena that completely bodied me online
pog
Sorry but I have to write about it because it was driving me crazy. It really broke the video flow for me when every like 5 sec there was opponent found pop. Please disable the que pops during the recording. Other then that great stuff. I want to get in tekken from 0 and was looking for something that can put me on right learning track.
Missed the topic, disliked
He's a pro...
Suzy is a boring, lama-lame character. :(
Can you make a Tekken guide for players coming from 2D fighters like me? Sure something like that would help a lot of players transition
I lack a lot of expertise in 2D fighters, I can see what I can come up with though...
I remember trying to lab Nina on Tekken 7 and learned so much (or at least enough) that I ended up playing her instead
She’s really good
So i actually did this exact thing for Jun and noticed how good that order of:stances, punishers, good moves, combo was. Didnt really have much time unfortunately so i didnt go that deep, but still. Also something very good i think google sheets was fantastic for this. You could have so much information on your monitor at the same time. I had first a punish tab where i compiled punishes as i found them. Even a few options for different punishes. Like for example for i13 standing f34 for a wall splat and decent damage or f31 to get i to stance if i want to risk a mix up. (I might remember those inputs wrong but but my point). next ont he right i had my stance options all of them just listed out. At the bottom left i had my "good moves" and bottom right i had a place for comboes though i didn't have enough time to look into them almost at all so i just remembered the one combo i kept doing.
That's cool it was working for you too, I took some time to come up with it but hadn't confirmed with a large sample size of other players
Why are you searching for a match the whole time? Great content as always, thanks!
the beta had no practice mode
Thanks, you're a very good teacher. I'm going to add this method to my toolbox when I start out with T8.
I literally start with new characters by learning a what are the strong neutral poke tools and counter hit launchers.
anyone else forgets there combo in a rank match an then just end up spa ing grabs in a panic lol or is that just me on jin lol
Just set opponent to stand then guard all. Remember all natutal hit strings and see which ones keep you plus and then go from there
Wish you would make that txt file downloadable
Some Azucena specific tips:
1,1 is an exceptional string for learning offense and defense.
It's -9 so you end your turn when it's blocked but you can use it after blocking something you suspect is unsafe or if you think you can get a counter hit.
I also use it as a poke or whiff punishing something fast.
You enter stance at an advantage on hit which means you can attack right after. If your stance attack hits then you can continue the momentum.
1,1 is insanely strong. The fact that it can be backdashed (which I learned after) is also great balancing at higher level
You should really make a video where you go through loves one by one and explain and show why that move is good or bad, because it just feels like you did all the work and you just paste everything in that notepad, i think itll be more helpful to see the whole process
Do not try to duck running moves. Sidestep them if they look linear like Azucenas WR 2,3
Learning a new Tekken character priority list:
Hopekick
combos
df1
low poke
12f punish
That's why you download the [REDACTED] if you're on PC. ngl idc if its frown upon.
I tried her and fell in love with her style and stance. Didn't have much time to learn her deeply but just her basics strings in order can play Online and enjoyed. Yes her 1,1 is very Strong, can backdash use as whiff...
This was super helpful! :O
Curious, what note taking app do you use?
you make really good t8 content
The biggest problem with this move list is that Sony insists that all their buttons are white now.
Imagine when you’re new to tekken and have to man all the characters 😂
She can fill in for miguel
Awesome! As my friend Jacob and I want to learn the game we definitely will be using this alongside your beginner’s guide series for Tekken 8
I appreciate your videos. Leveled up my game a lot!
I knew the concept of all these things (i10 i15 and lowpunish, stance transitions etc), but i never thought about an approach like this.
I always just looked up key moves other people figured out, but this is much better to develop your own playstyle.
I think its really dope, will do that with Reina once the game drops. Thanks, great Ressource!
Super useful! Thanks.
This is great, thanks
Cant wait to deep dive characters with now knowing how to do so :). Great Guide!
I often lose my turn way too easily while it feels like the enemys turn is so much longer and he keeps going. So i wonder how do I keep the turn? Do you have any advice?
Usually mids that don't stagger you will give up frames and allow you to attack, but it's worth learning to backdash/sidestep to create space and buy time!
This is gold!
casual player here. what moves do you generally label as safe? like plus moves?
Safe moves are -9 or higher. Most characters have a 10 frame jab. This means if a move is -10 or greater, it can be punished. Anything else is safe... but it's been 2 months so hopefully you've figured that out by now.
you make it complicated just learn the key moves and go crazy until you learn it
sounds like you didnt pay attention lmao
check whats +
check whats safe +
check what moves frame tap +
learn max dam combos
and the rest is just all about fundamentals
I always start out with the combo challenges(or sample combos pre-T8) so I know what moves are gonna be essential. Once I get used to the combo inputs, like doing them without a guide. I try to take the moves out of those combos to neutral. You can usually identify from those moves which launcher was a df2, a df1, 1jab etc. Then I fully learn the movelist after by doing them one by one on my own.
After that, I go for a test run on ranked/quick match. I mostly start out playing dry(df1, low poke, df2 etc.). Then it evolves from there by trying out some moves that aren't the generics.
what is the notepad he is using?
notepad++!
Really glad you mentioned geppopotamus. I do similar breakdowns of moves but is to quickly get all the frames, properties and damage in an easy to read format, so I don't have to lab them all myself.
That way I can quickly compare moves with similar properties to find the unique benefits of each.
The biggest thing they're missing is guaranteed followups, so first I check a couple punishment guides to be sure there isn't stronger punishers than the data implies.
After figuring out optimal punishment, I'll summarise all the stance and full crouch moves first (usually already familier with a lot of crouch moves from learning punishment) then split all other moves by startup frames to compare them.
Finally, if there's any moves were the data seems objectively worse than another move, I'll check them in game, and usually the "worse" one has either longer range, or a more decptive animation.
I don't really have a method for learning how well moves track, but its usually pretty intuitive from the animation, and you figure it just by using them enough.
The bot can set a sidestep as a secondary action. It's not 100% reliable but, with that setting you can jab the bot's block, then try the move you're testing.
Once full recording is available, I test it with forward dash instead of jab, and I try to sidestep the move using my character.
@@PhiDX oh yeah I didn't mean I don't know how to test it. I just meant it's not normally a deliberate step in my learning process.
Just a personal thing were I tend to trust my gut at first, and figure it out properly through just playing matches.
The entrance barrier in this game is a lil ridiculous
You should have seen Tekken 7 when it first launched, the game didn’t even give you frame data or combo trials to begin with
@@JACKETMANE that game still don’t got a tutorial 😂
@@championredd exactly, so Tekken 8 is doing a lot better in comparison since it does have a tutorial even if it is incredibly basic
@@JACKETMANE what point are you tryna make the entrance barrier is still over the top and that tutorial isn’t just basic it’s kinda ass doesn’t tell u anything you couldn’t figure out in 5 minutes of just playing
@@championredd my point is it could be worse. No it’s not amazing, in comparison to Mortal Kombats tutorials and accessibility it is completely ass I agree, the game tells you nothing about frame data or even movement. But compared to its predecessor, its a step in the right direction. Who knows, maybe they’ll make a fleshed out tutorial in the full game
I watch videos instead of labing. I block punish just fine. Single mindedness is what pros have and talent. But film is crucial imo
