I replaced my starter today, this video was 100% on point , I did not have to loosen the exhaust , I did remove the sensor from the pipe , the heat shield is the hardest part to move , I pushed it upwards toward the oil filter and used a shim to move it around , a slight bend to the corner by the 10 mm screw helped shift it out , I purchased the new starter on ebay with shipping it was 50.00 , not a rebuilt . NEW . I used 1 jack stand on the passenger side of the van , I did not remove the engine cover or air filter assembly, only the air dam extension , took a total of 2 hours with a coffee break . I would say its not very difficult , just the shield is a pain .... a 10mm socket, a 14 mm socket , two extensions short and long , and a knuckle on the driver , thanks again for this great video ....
Brandon Epix thanks for the info.. it looks like I'll have to replace my daughter's starter.. I'll have to troubleshoot it.. Did you ever try the old tap the starter to verify it had a problem. Just curious.
Great video! It helped me change a starter on my sister's Kia 2005 Sedona. You were spot on with everything. All I had to do was get in the dirt and do it. Thanks for your help.
You said this video wasn't going to be very good but its easily the best how to of a kia sedona starter on youtube, I followed along pausing the video and I was able to do it myself.
I have to replace my next door neighbors starter tomorrow on this same make. I would have never found the damn thing had it not been for this video. Man, that looks like a pain. Thanks for the video, lots of help.
Thanks for doing the video Idaho, it's time consuming doing the camera work etc but thanks for doing that, very helpful with the views and insight you provided. 2003 Sedona, here I go...
Frank Harvey thank you for your comment. It was fun doing it and glad it has helped people. I myself like so many others do not like to pay crazy prices(especially ones that i can not usually afford) for people to repair things that i can do myself. I love watching RUclips videos to learn how to do things on my own espically when it saves me money. My biggest drive to do this video and others i may do in the future is so that it will hopefully help others like the videos I have watched have helped me. You know helping each other out kinda how the way things used to be. :) Take care and God bless.
Matt, Just finished my starter replacement. thanks for the help. I did mine all from the bottom. I used a socket with a universal joint to remove the top starter nut from the stud. Total time was about 2 hours, not counting water breaks. Thanks again.
Glad to hear!! hope that got you back up and running again. it sounds like using a universal joint and undoing it from under the van would definitely cut down time on removing parts not needing to be removed. thanks for the comment and hopefully it will help others. have a great day.
Great video. Short and to the point. I have the exact vehicle and same problem. Doing some research and found your video. I subscribed and looking forward to more of your content. Thanks!
peoplespontiac glad it helped. thanks for the comment. I'm working on a new video right now for cleaning the mass airflow sensor. hope it is as informative.
sweet. thats what i tried once i found the darn thing, but unfortunately for me it didnt help. glad that is all u needed. :) thanks fir checking out my video.
Matt Swizz: that is the reason why I made this video in an attempt to hopefully simplify it for others. It took me a while to find it too. Thanks for watching. Frenzy Sucks: Thank you very much for your positive review. that is exactly why I like You Tube so much. I watch videos and pause them as I'm working on things too.
Something else I forgot to mention in my video and had done prior to the video is to remove what I believe is the O2 sensor from off of the muffler. This needs to be removed so it does not get broken off and to access the starter better. You can see the hole in the muffler in the video and this is where the O2 sensor is located.
***** Important******* Everyone check out john sortore's comment below. He was able to do work from underneath and I'm sure it cut down on his overall time simply by using a universal joint to get the top bolt on the starter. Thanks again John!
Sorry all that I have not been commenting. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't until now. Thank you all for watching my video and I am glad you liked it.
I like technical terms. Like thingy.. lol. Matt I don't what that thingy is called either..but this is great info.. where are places for this baby to be jacked..is this all metric and do you remember the sizes.. there's usually a 10 mm in the mix.. thanks..
PIANOSTYLE100 lol. thanks. that unfortunately is one thing i did not do that i should have now that i look back is give size of sockets. yes metric for sure. i will hopefully be putting out an update soon that eliminates the time of removing equipment from top of engine compartment and doing work from underneath like john sortore suggested.
PIANOSTYLE100 i used a floor jack from the front on the frame. i had to cut down a two by 4 to give a little space between the floor jack plate and a few bolts or something that was just barely in the way to get a good lift on it. i then placed my jacks stands near the connecting point on the A arms. this supported the van very well.
I would have like to have seen it.. but of course some things are kept to ourselves so nobody will do it wrong and get hurt. Did you get the info I sent on the tripod?
good video, i had no idea where the starter was. the car has left me stranded several times. called my insurance tow truck he jumped started it and on my way. i do have a doubt if its my starter or my starting switch.??

Hello, thanks for the video. did you mention why you had to do this? any symptoms or problems that lead you to doing this. this is how I am spending today.
Robert Thompson van would not start all the time. almost like battery was dead. would not start when trying to jump if the battery was dead. had battery tested and it was fine. next option was starter. couldn't find it easily so after found it i wanted to post video to hopefully help others.
Hello everyone. Hope all is well and every is safe. Stay tuned for part two of my Kia Sedona starter replacement video. New tips and tricks to help you out. Check out my Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning video if you have not seen it yet. Take care all.

I need to find out how to direct people to my second video first, as it helps take less time. hope things get better for you. God Bless
Idaho_Weibert_60 Yes, it helped. I did not have to disassemble anything up top except the battery I could not get to that nut that's hid near the motor mount tbr one in front was easy enough and someone already moved the heat shield so I didn't have to unbolt the manifold to get mine out... However EVERY one of those shield bolts twisted off on me! I did have to remove the manifold bolts on the one at pick in pull tho. My next adventure will probably be a tune up which in tells pulling the plantum
I wouldn't say junk. :) it has served my family well with minimal problems. and we bought it used with 16k it has only had some minor issues. I for sure am not happy with the break system as from everything I have read over years says they were under sized for the weight of the van. We have had to do break several times. hope you have a great day and thanks for the comment and for watching.
Tim Hinson : As you watch the video you can see how I point out the location of the top bolt. I know even In the video it is still hard to see though. It is right on the top portion on what I believe is the motor mount. I had to partially push the radiator hose out of the way to fit my hand and wrench down there to undo it. Hope this helps. let me know if you have any more questions. I also found that once I reconnected the started I could feel the top bolt from underneath.

No. The positive cable that runs down to starter gives the starter power. Check to make sure the starter is connected properly and if so maybe clean off the post on the starter to make sure there is a good connection.
Just wanted to say thanks you to everyone who has watched this video, and subscribed to my channel. never thought I would get many views, but this video is up to 60,000 views. glad you all are enjoying it. remember to check out my part deux video for new tips and tricks that will make the job easier and quicker.
Biggest reason at first to disconnect the exhaust was to dealwith the the darn puzzle piece of a heat sheild giving me problems. The o2 sensor was a minr issue . Thanks for the comment. That is one reason why I did a follow up video. :) have a great day.
Ben Bloom just saw this comment sorry. Im not sure if it is the same or not. mechanically with removal of the starter i think it would be the same. As far as location and what you may need to remove or not will prob be a bit different is my guess. I would also guess that the starter would be in the same general area.
hello azneil. Im sorry, but I do not think I would be able to help with that as I have never worked on a kia carnival. I would not think other than placement and maybe size and style that they would be too different. one. im thinking it should be on the driver side. check your radiator hoses and should be able to follow them to find the housing. removing housing with proper sockets and then installing new thermostat. ill see if I can find any videos for you.
check out this video it looks like it could help you out, even though it is not the same model, I think it will give you a good starting point. ruclips.net/video/EOv72WPf7Mo/видео.html
Joanne Elmore sorry for the late reply. busy life. i was also trying to talk with a mechanic friend of mine as i dont believe there is a way to adjust the idle on an vehicle with Electronic fuel injection. i think just on older carburetors. my buddy agreed and said there might be an adjustment screw on the throttle body where the throttle cable attaches. he said with EFI if you are having idle problems it might be an air leak. having a dirty or bad MAFS can also cause problems with the sensor not registering a proper air mixture.
Derrick Coles being they are only a couple years apart I wouldn't think they would have changed it too much. without seeing one i could not give you and honest answer sorry.
Funny thing I have a guitar site that I is about seven years old.. I haven't posted on it much for years. I never was able to get many views on it.. I looked at the other day and the views are blowing up.. I have thousands of views. So here's my new plan make alot of videos and totally ignore the site.. maybe my grandchildren can continue the pattern.. PIANOSTYLE100 yah i enjoy it as well. i have watched so many videos over the years to help me fix things. i couldnt find a good video to help me replace me starter so i figured I'd try to help out.

My channel is very transparent. I think you will like the Boogie ones. Stay away from the theory for now. I wish I had had all these tips. I had regular lessons but I've done thousands of hours of self study. Watch the cartoons. They are made up by me.
Pulling everything off the engine from up top is entirely too much work. It took me maybe 15 minutes with a BS break to remove and replace the starter from under the car.
turtle2448thomas yes i totally agree, which is why i pinned a comment to the top about it and did a second video"part deux" as it is much faster from underneath. :) Thanks for the comment hope the video helped a bit and hope you liked it. I'll have to try and update this video to ensure everyone knows that going in. Hope your repair went well. Please like and subscribe and check out my other videos. Thanks and God bless
I do piano videos.. I rigged the cheapest tripod in history probably. Pass it on to you. Go to Walmart and buy a digital brand tripod.. I think they go for as little as 8 dollars. Go to Dollar tree and get a selfie stick. Take off the top platform. Screw the selfie holder into the tripod. I can send you a pic if you want it. I think you can keep the selfie wire engaged I removed mine.
PIANOSTYLE100 are you using your phone to record? i am using a go pro. after this video i bought a cheap tripod from walmart and have had good results. glad to hear your is working for you. ill have go check out some of your videos.
Hello Becky. So sorry for the late response please forgive me. In my opinion I would say it is not your starter. your starter is only responsible for starting your engine. i would lean more towards either an altenator or possibly fuel problem. so you are aware i am not a mechanic, but my opinion is based on my experience with repairing my own vehicles. i have had multiple vehicles die after starti g due to the alternator going out. hope this helps. what year and make vehicle is it? let me know what you find out.
i agree that it took less the the second time i did it as i used tips that people posted on this page after they watched the vid so i did a second vid that made it less complicated. ;) i need to figure out how to link that vid to this one so when people click on this vid they can see the newess time consuming one ;)
the heat sheild was a pain in the but. Try to find my other video Kia Sedona part 2 which explains a little better how to get the heat shield out after having to do it a second time LOL

Good video, I have a 2012 sedona, working on the starter tomorrow. They really jam it in there.
Yes they do. Lord knows why they cant make parts easier to access.
Nice job. You told us what we needed to know. We don't need the technical terms.

turtle2448thomas yes i totally agree, which is why i pinned a comment to the top about it and did a second video"part deux" as it is much faster from underneath. :) Thanks for the comment hope the video helped a bit and hope you liked it. I'll have to try and update this video to ensure everyone knows that going in. Hope your repair went well. Please like and subscribe and check out my other videos. Thanks and God bless
but for us beginner its good to know how to take parts from above... thanks
PIANOSTYLE100 are you using your phone to record? i am using a go pro. after this video i bought a cheap tripod from walmart and have had good results. glad to hear your is working for you. ill have go check out some of your videos.
you want to come help me with mine
I will send a pic .. you play a musical instrument. I had a music store. I'll put it on my you tube site. Make sure you watch the cartoons.
PIANOSTYLE100 k ill check it out. i play a little piano by ear not whole songs, and i used to play trumpet.
My car will start then stop i was told that it was starter
Hello Becky. So sorry for the late response please forgive me. In my opinion I would say it is not your starter. your starter is only responsible for starting your engine. i would lean more towards either an altenator or possibly fuel problem. so you are aware i am not a mechanic, but my opinion is based on my experience with repairing my own vehicles. i have had multiple vehicles die after starti g due to the alternator going out. hope this helps. what year and make vehicle is it? let me know what you find out.
can you describe more of what is going on.
Your way is really complicated, I 've seen it done alot easier!!!!!!!!
feel free to share your thoughts and ideas. to try to help people out. i have no problem with constructive criticism
@@mattweibert60 I know you are truly trying and giving of your time to help. We thank you but it could be done with less interfering. But thank you
Just asking but what do you mean by we and less interfering
i agree that it took less the the second time i did it as i used tips that people posted on this page after they watched the vid so i did a second vid that made it less complicated. ;) i need to figure out how to link that vid to this one so when people click on this vid they can see the newess time consuming one
;)
Too bad you did the video after the fact. . .
i had to redo it a yr later when that starter went bad so i redid the video made it better. :)
i dont know why i cant see your other comment where it said you couldnt get the heat sheild out. Let me know if you have any questions have a good day
the heat sheild was a pain in the but. Try to find my other video Kia Sedona part 2 which explains a little better how to get the heat shield out after having to do it a second time LOL
I see that you did comment on the other video but for some reason I can't see the comment not sure why hope you got it to work
Is it just me or does KIA just have a piss poor design for simple part swaps. SMH
agreed. should not need to disconnect motor mounts and rotate engine just to change sparkplugs. very poor design.
