  • How do you get Prunus mume to backbud?
Japanese apricot (prunus mume) is reluctant to create backbuds. Therefor it is important to do spring and summer pruning on this tree.
I defoliate my prunus mume bonsai partially in early spring to trigger backbudding. Then in summer I prune back to encourage buds to open and branches to develop.

Very informative. Thanks. Didn’t know apricots were so fiddly. They weren’t on my list anyway but to make sure I’ll make a note to avoid them. 😅
The rootstock probably is Prunus Cerasifera. My father used to tell me it’s a common rootstock used in the trade. He hated it because it’s very prone to suckering. Also the trunk of the fruit trees developed this ugly smaller “ankle” at the base (the rootstock) with a fatter section above it (the graft). I didn’t know it happened even in bonsai. I have a cherry which is obviously grafted but the base is a lot more developed so I don’t complain. 😊

Absolutely fascinating info - did not realize the complexities of working with Prunus mume. Do you know of other flowing species that respond similarly?

Hello Jelle, does Prunus Incisa react in the same way if I do this?

I think a similar question has been asked above but is this applicable to other Prunus? Namely your flowering cherries?

Hoi Jelle werkt dit ook voor sierappel?
