Hey friends! I realized there's an error in the video labeling the Deuter pack. The Deuter is the Speed Lite 22, not the "Speedlight." Whoops! Do you have favorite daypack? Any must-have daypack features you can't live without? And is the Gregory pack BLUE or GREEN?! Comment below! - Miranda
As a kind of "clydesdale" hiker (6'3" fairly broad across the shoulders), I ended up getting a pack with much more capacity than I need for most day hikes (REI Trail 40), just because it fit my back better than anything I tried in the 20-30L range. The upside is it's got enough room to go from a day hike to an overnight or lightweight weekend, the downside is most of the time I'm just walking around with a half-full pack, which I suppose is better than a half-empty pack. The Gregory looks pretty green on my screen, but it's an old laptop.
Probably deuteranomaly which is a red green color blindness, but it makes the difference between bluish green and yellowish green from blue and yellow respectively. I know because that's where I was at watching this lol. The pack and slippers are blue. The mug looks dark blue to me :)
There's a color tint in the video. In the video it looks more green, but if you look up the backpack in real life it looks more blue. Also, people interpret teal differently. I see it as a shade of blue. Others see it as a shade of green.
Your new Gregory pack is definitely green. It's even named "Jade" (a shade of green) and looks to be a hue between jade and teal (teal being a bluish green). So, as we say in the South, "Bless your heart, it's green not blue".
I am not professional hiker by any stretch. That said, having used packs with a trampoline back I can honestly say, I would not want to use one without it. It is so much more comfortable and cooler than having a extra layer of material right against the skin. Also, I feel a hip belt is a absolute must. Again, total difference from weight on the shoulders vs the hips. Also has to have decent/good padded shoulder straps and hip belt pockets that are larger in size. A simple standard manufacturers should be using for hip belt pockets are cell phones. If it won't fit, make the pocket bigger.
The Osprey compression strap goes over the zipper on purpose. It takes the pressure off the zipper itself . You don't want to pull on one side of a length of zipper.
I am in a similar situation! I've been using the flash 18 because of how light it is. I have a bigger osprey but it's so dang heavy. The deuter is looking GREAT to me! I also came here to say Green!
Idea for your day pack: i call it a soup hike. Get a pot of soup to a rolling boil the morning of the hike and have people bring a vacuum insulated thing. It can even be a mug. We used Contigo things. Fill everyone's thermos with soup and you'll have a tasty lunch on the trail.
I am a simple woman. I see Miranda, I click Like. (Also legit thanks for this video; I am navigating these exact waters right now, trying to choose my first day pack, so this is very helpful content.❤)
I just went through the similar pack search the past month and narrowed down to the men’s versions, the Osprey Stratos 24 or 34, Osprey Manta 24 or 34 and Gregory Zulu (Jade) 30 or 35. All nice packs. The Stratos seems - for a larger guy- the hip belt doesn’t come around the waist far enough- and would need a hip strap extension that you can get from Osprey. Led me to the Manta which fit better and I Liked the features on the 34 better than 24. The Gregory Zulu series however has a longer and larger hip belt so it actually sits more on the hips (for a larger guy like me) and real comfortable. I was able to also try on a Zulu 40 and ended up ordering a Zulu 35 from Gregory since REI doesn’t carry. A little taller than the 30, top loader and a zipper on the back to also get into the main compartment. Looking forward to trying it out on the trail.
I have a north face angstrom 30 for my day pack. I've had it for probably 15+ years now. It has a lot of miles on it. It's holding up well. Just figured to put that out there for anyone looking for a good day pack
I have an mid 2000s Manta 34 and recently upgraded. Living in CA, I like the trampoline frame mesh. I came into an REI thinking about a Stratos or the REI traverse, but ended up w/ a Gregory Zulu 40.
Miranda and/or REI Pack Guru? Bummed to see that the Jade 28 is a Womens’ specific only. Was hopeful that a mens version with range sizing would be available. Im considering a Miwok 24, which may be a bit small, shoulder straps that aren’t more padded (like the Jade 24), and lacks a rain cover; as opposed to the Gregory Zulu 30, which is bigger than I prefer, I guess. Gregory is my preferred brand. Any suggestions/recommendations; any ideas from the community too. Thanks! 👣
@@rei Probably So; wish the Miwok 24’s shoulder straps were cushioned better. I read comments from users who identify that as a real comfort issue for carrying capacity weight and/or distances. I wonder whether a more cushioned modular shoulder/torso unit could be substituted. I will follow up with my store or REI gear advisers in Kent, WA. Thank You for the quick reply & advisement.
Wasn't there a follow-up episode where Miranda talks about hiking with this pack? I remember she ended up going with the red one instead, but can't find the episode. Thanks!
What about the osprey tempest 24? Thinking about getting one! I sent the skimmer 28 back bc I couldn't reach the side pockets does that mean it's too small?
Can you do a video on what you (personally) pack for a day hike? Would be awesome to see your version of the 10 essentials, snack suggestions, stuff for Nala, etc. A lot of the videos are geared towards backpacking (which is great!), but I'd be curious to know more about how to plan and execute shorter trips "in the wild".
It is actually very important that the compression straps go *over* the zippers. The zippers are the components on a bag that are most likely to fail, and the compression straps, if the bag is properly engineered, help to keep the zipper from failing. In a properly engineered bag, the compression straps go *over* the zippers, which takes stress off of the zipper when you tighten down the straps. In poorly engineered bags, the compression straps sometimes do not go over the zippers, which puts additional stress on the zipper if you tighten down the straps on a bag that is fully loaded.
@@edleifer6719 I see manufacturers offering warranties on bags and bag-components all the time, but I have yet to see how such warranties could be useful. If your zipper fails when you're on a hike or a trip, the warranty will not be very helpful at that point. If you're taking a bag on a hike or trip, you need for the bag to be sufficiently well-engineered and well-made that it survives the entire hike/trip. How are you going to use a warranty if the bag breaks during the middle of a hike/trip? (I guess, if there is a post office nearby, you could mail your bag in for warranty service and camp out by the post office for a month until it comes back fixed.) In any case, the sort of bag design that puts extra stress on zippers through poorly designed compression straps would probably void zipper manufacturers' warranties: zippers are not designed to be pulled-on laterally by bags with poorly engineered compression straps -- no zipper is designed for persistent stress in that direction -- some do better under such stress than others, but none are designed for that.
Fellow REI employee here! Loved the video and I love to sell the Gregory Jade 28, I think it does so many things well. One thing to consider, too, though, is how the pack fits your individual anatomy. I never discuss specific features with a customer until we've found a pack that is comfortable for all day use, because if you can't stand to wear it, the features of a pack don't matter!
Was so glad I spent some time at REI finding a pack that fit well. Until I had one that fit I didn’t realize how poorly my previous pack fit me. PS Green
Choosing backpacks is like choosing who to date. Do you go for something familiar or esthetically pleasing or the one that seemingly has everything? Lol, I think Miranda will be happy with her choice

I'm constantly impressed with the fit and features. Please give us an after action report once you worn that pack around for a bit!
I’m amazed. I have had the same North Face day pack for 27 years. I watched this because I love your informed, yet serendipitous process. And I’m thinking as an old, retired advertising person , how remarkable it is for me , who would never walk into a store to hear a 20 minute schpeil on a product I don’t need- and in fact, I have been in a loving relationship with my North Face for over a quarter of a Century. Now I can only think of Jade 28. I hope you’re happy, Day Pack home wrecker.
The Gregory sunglasses holder is great. I didn't think I was going to use it but it was helpful. I have the Maya 22 and Maven 55. Probably always be a Gregory girl.
I have an REI Savannah vest that i wear when working outdoors, it has some sewn loops like that and I completely love the convenience of hanging sunglasses there. Super useful as I have to go between shade and direct sunlight often, beats the hell out of stuffing them into a jeans pocket and living with the scratches.
These packs run from $115-$150. I've got to be honest here. I've bought some pricey bags, but the lower in volume you get, the less willing you should be to spend on them, in my opinion. Pretty much anything under 30L should read "Outdoor Products" on it and sell for $30 or less. You just don't ask packs that size to do much other than carry a few layers, water and snacks. The only reason, to me, to spend more is if you absolutely need a frame/trampoline of some sort. As for hip belts, another $8 gets you an OT fanny pack you can wear instead, and it comes with holders you can fit two Gatorade bottles into. :) -For this volume, I use a 29L Outdoor Products Quest backpack. It's kind of a rugged, tactical-looking with various compartments, is available in multiple colors and runs $25 at Walmart. I carry my laptop to and from work in it as well. -The fanny pack is the Outdoor Mojave H2O ($9 at WM) and has 3L of storage outside of the bottles. -For day trips I'll often not even bring the Quest and instead use the Ozark Trail Atka ($17 at WM), which is less backpacky and more like a tube with lightweight straps and limited zippered storage (with no bottle holders). It's still 29L but weighs about 11 oz. and I'll use that and the fanny pack as a combo. But I wouldn't use it without because even though it's hydration compatible, I wouldn't trust it to carry 2-3L of water weight on the inside. Strictly layers, odds and ends inside. I rotate them all around as the situation dictates. I've had them all for about 5 years and they're fine except for a little delamination where the Atka cinches, and the zippers are now a little sluggish on the Quest. I don't worry about the integrated rain cover because it's day pack. If it's likely to rain, I'm likely not going to take a hike that day. And if I'm out more than one day, I'm not likely doing that hike with a day pack. But I HAVE invested about $5 in a generic one from WM. Take care.
Deuter also makes a slightly larger pack at 28 liters that comes with a rain cover and a little beefier shoulder straps and hip belts. I love that pack for a long day hike or when I’m carrying my DSLR and telephoto lenses and need more padding to carry the heavier and bulkier weight. I then have the Deuter 22 Speed Lite SL for quick 1-2 hour trips where I’m not carrying as much gear as an all day hike. In that 22 L pack, I keep it packed with all my stuff ready to go so I can be quick and spur of the moment. That smaller pack also lives in my trunk so I always have emergency supplies with me. Which was surprisingly useful during an evacuation from wildfire back in 2018; I had emergency equipment with me if needed. I did find that loading the packs up with the sand bags in the store helped me decide which pack felt comfortable. I legitimately forgot that the Deuter pack was already filled with sand bags when I went to “add weight”. I had a good laugh, and decided that the way that pack distributed the weight made it feel like the weight wasn’t there, was the best choice for me.
So I have a bunch of packs from just hanging around the city, to more sophisticated things like going to work all the way up to backpacking packs. I have different sizes for all occasions. When I am just running to the bank and back, I take a very small pack. Then when I am going to visit family around town I take a larger pack. If I am commuting to work I take my huge commuter backpack and then if I am going hiking and backpacking I have packs for those occasions as well. Although my briefcase is usually the one I take to work but it is between my brief case and my work pack. Oh by the way, all of my packs are named after girls.
I work in the optical industry. I've never heard the term "ear horns" before. They're temples and the middle of the sunglass frame where the elastic loop goes is the bridge. Good review though.
different people see colors differently! This isn't color blindness, because both can differentiate all colors and shades, but the Blue/green thing is real! I bet one of you has brown eyes and one blue eyes. From memory, I believe blue eyed people see blue/green colors as more green and brown eyed people se them as more blue. Isn't nature amazing!
This video is so timely! I was at my REI today looking at these Osprey and Gregory packs to upgrade my day pack. I really like the pocket design on the Gregory, but the straps fit me better on the Osprey. Still trying to decide. I don't know what to do! :)
-For this volume, I use a 29L Outdoor Products Quest backpack.
Take care.
11:30 Miranda realizes she's colorblind. If she thinks the Osprey and Gregory packs are the same color, then she's definitely colorblind.
I feel really bad for the discarded old pack that is being tossed aside for the new shinier model after years of faithful service
Green
"Well it doesn't have consciousness so" 😂😂😂
Definitely green. :) Thank you for the video.
neat! and helpful. Yes, would love an update later.
You sold me my Osprey many moons ago 😂 and ironically, the compression buckles on it are my least favorite thing about it!
I love my little rei bag small and compact light weight. So far it’s holding up!
what about Gregory Kiro? I search trough internet and there is no review of it
Love my Gregory Jade! Size is so versatile- day hike to overnight bag. Super comfy to wear 😊
I would love to see if your new friend is all you thought she(he) would be....traveling together brings out all the hidden baggage😝
I work in the optical industry. I've never heard the term "ear horns" before. They're temples and the middle of the sunglass frame where the elastic loop goes is the bridge. Good review though.
It's green. The tag on it is blue for contrast.
different people see colors differently!
Whoa!! I had no idea! Thanks for sharing this - nature is amazing! - Miranda
This video is so timely! I was at my REI today looking at these Osprey and Gregory packs to upgrade my day pack. I really like the pocket design on the Gregory, but the straps fit me better on the Osprey. Still trying to decide. I don't know what to do! Maybe I need to go back and play the straps on the Gregory to see if I can get them to fit better. Definitely interested in a follow-up!
Lol the bag is blue but that cup is definitely green 😂
you should try the talon/tempest by Osprey...love it
Still patiently waiting for the trip report on this bag! Incorporating it into a day hike video would be sweet.
I know this was made today, BUT YESS! make a hundred-mile report! That sounds awesome! Also great vid!
Awesome content!! It was also WAY past time to upgrade my day pack and after watching your post, I went to my local(ish) REI, tried on about 10 packs, I went with a Deuter Speed Lite 32.....VERY happy with it......currently my MOST comfortable pack.
