France was 100% going to invade Germany while Russia was also putting them in a vice. France wanted a re-march for 1870 and had plan 17 to take Berlin. Plus their pact with Russia pretty much guaranteed their entry into the war. So I would argue preemptive attack on Germany’s part is how they defended their homeland. If you’re a German it makes sense. 2 rival countries on either side have agreed to crush you on 2 fronts if a war happens, and with some government propaganda it isn’t hard to see why Germans believed (and I’d argue genuinely were) defending their homeland was much as any other nation. And considering the odds they faced they did a damn good job to last as long as they did! You could argue Austria-Hungary was spurred on by German support to attack Serbia, but the Russians and French mobilising justify Germany’s preemptive strike. The german Empire was only 40 Years old but we had one of the strongest economies at this time, also we NEVER loose a War before as "united Germans". I am English but my brains are not wrapped in the union jack flag. I try to be as objective as possible and generally agree with many things you said about German soldiers in ww1. May i recommend that you view A BBC tv series called "The Somme from both sides of the wire" which gives a far more balanced view than most nationalistic biased documentaries and shows just how much better the Germans treated their own soldiers compared to the British. .ie 350 British shot for cowardice, the German figure was a tiny fraction by comparison.
My Great Grandfathers fought on opposite sides of WW1. My Dad's Grandfather was bomber pilot for German Empire and my Mom's Grandfather was a British sniper in the trenches throughout the whole war. Brave men who's bravery was wasted fighting each other rather than fighting the next crusade in middle east. Imagine if the Central Powers and the Allies had united to assault Iraq and Afghanistan together early rather than this.

That's why they defended them. The Germans had a Defensive Policy (Verdun the Exception) on the Western Front until Victory on the Eastern Front that would free up Men and Material for a new Offensive in the West.
