This is part 2 of a series of how to develop a spring as a sustainable water source. I will walk you through how to collect the spring water and divert it to a spring box, then to a holding tank and if there is enough flow and fall even run a hydraulic ram pump off of the spring. If there is not enough fall and the water need to be lifted to home then we will look to other pumping options.

This is by far one of the simplest systems I've seen adding the silt trap downline makes for a springbox that will probably never need maintaining. At the current price of $ 305.00 USD this is pretty much affordable for everyone who has a spring they wish to develop. We're in the process of looking for land and even if our piece doesn't have a spring I intend to get this setup just to have it on hand in the case I ever have a spring that I can develop. @PilgrimLad That sound like a good idea. I might add a bulkhead fitting to the bottom and creating a place to flush all of the sediment out. First I am going to install as is and see how hard it is to control the sediment. Thanks for the feedback!
someone gave us one of those big three parts house filtration systems. I'm working on using it with a spring. it's exciting and a blessing.

@SurvivalWeekOnline Thanks! Adding the Ram Pump to this will create An EMP proof pressurized water system that is going to truly bless this retreat! Ordering the parts but there was 8" of snow on the ground and zero degrees. Not fun playing in the water now.
@Ja72corbin It would be negligible. The elevation ( head) is what gives you pressure plus each containerr is ambient pressure. They are not sealed so the pressure cannot build from one to the other. Good question though and thanks for watching.
@RobRichmondRPG I agree on garden hoses. So few people dont realize the lead content in the end fittings. Though I know we all have sipped from the garden hose at a time, we really shouldnt, heck, I dont even know why we water our food with them.
Im in central Ky and Im engineering this project on the cheap! I know carolina water tank dot com has some really great products, but I wanted to do this as cheaply as possible. I used .25" plexiglass for a head wall and food grade 5gal bucket from as a Spring Box. I wish I had used larger diameter PVC, since my spring has worked around my dam. I will up it to 1.5" diameter Still searching for a reservoir. THANKS for the detailed videos you've put together! Outstanding job sir!

@MSGDREWRY If the collection system is done correctly there is very little silt. I flushed the spring box a couple of times and a quick stir removed 95% of the sediment. The way the box is molded, none of the sediment gets into the outlet line. Thanks for watching.

This is SUCH an informative series. My concern is the headwall and the overflow in the headwall. Our spring flow gets down pretty low after an entire summer of no rain here in the Pacific northwest, which is why we're going to put this in now while there's not a ton of water gushing out of it. But that's the problem...once the rains return this spring probably gets up to ten gallons a minute or more! So I'm trying to sort out how to create a dam/headwall that won't blow out with that much hydro pressure coming at it. I thought about putting a huge overflow pipe into the headwall to give all that water a place to drain out, maybe a 4" or even 6" overflow pipe? But a bulkhead that big would cost close to $200 bucks if you can find one I imagine.
But the water collection line will be one inch, so once the collected water is in that one inch pipe it'll be in 1" piping from there on. It's that major volume of water that flows from that spring in winter that concerns me and how to engineer that part of the system to prevent a blow out, especially since that part of the system would require a complete re-excavation to repair. Wanna get it right the first time! Your input on this would be SO appreciated.
1 inch pipe will gravity flow 14 gallons a minute. You could go 1.5 or 2 inch if you want. Drive 4 or 6 2 feet rebar around the dam wall to hold it up. Definitely use some bentonite clay around the inside wall to seal it up then add about a foot thick wall of clay around the outside wall. To help hold it up then put gravel in the dam.

Why not drill a third outlet hole on the well side of the spring box (near the bottom) and attach a valve to wash the sediment out instead of agitating the sediment?

@RobRichmondRPG there are several different types of pvc those smaller dia. are usually for domestic water it is much better then the cpvc that most people are used to seeing for there water lines

@RobRichmondRPG PVC meant for consumable water is safe, and PVC itself is not toxic it is the releasing compounds used for the molds that can be toxic. Non-polymerized vinyl chloride is toxic though, but once it has been polymerized into a chain to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) it becomes safe. Just remember to use PVC meant for consumable water and you should have no worries.
You could clean out sediment using a siphon used to clean aquarium gravel. No power needed.
Reminds me of a field tile line gate box used to control erosion.

@engineer775 I have seen a test result for spring water emanating from a Rocky Mountain hillside that indicated the presence of bacterial contamination. The lab stated that a spring water source can no longer be considered safe without testing.
A FEW QUESTIONS:
1. Have you had the water tested in a lab for potability?
2. Assume for a moment that your spring is contaminated at some future point. What steps would/could you take to add filtration and/or disinfection to your system?

Thanks for sharing. I will be building a gravity fed spring system on my hillside for my swimming pond. Probably more like a deep French drain system is all I will really need?
People might need an idea about the Elevation needed for the water pressure they need. Water towers are tall for this reason. To get 50 to 60 psi at the tap would require a 160ft watertower or very steep hillI or a holding tank with a pump to keep it cost effective. Just saying
I don't have a clue about any of this stuff, but I'm very interested. It seems counter-intuitive to me to have the input into your water storage tank at the very bottom. Wouldn't it be better to have it at the top. And wouldn't it be better to have the outflow 5 or 6 inches above the bottom in case there is any sediment that collects in the bottom of the storage tank? Many thanks.
Talk about water quality. Well vs. spring , cost as to trenching , drill cost , running the pipe, hardness of well water vs spring water. Chemicals like iron , sulfur that affect taste , Hey Culligan Man ! Thanks JB
Shouldn't the intake to the water storage container be on or near the top?
Works just like a sand filter for a swimming pool.
if nothing else you could use the water for the garden and livestock setting it up as a auto waterer for the animals would be 1 less thing you would need to do everyday and watering the garden would be faster in my reaised beds i laid out some pvc and drilled some small holes in the pipeing and hook up the hose to it and run the water for a little while every day and it does a great job

Hey great set up, this is exactly what i need for my camp. I do have a couple of questions, I notice your holding tank ( The Barrel) is piped into the bottom, does the weight of the water not eventually get to the point where it potentially could push the water back into the system, and if you are to place a ram pump on the outlet side of the holding tank how far will a ram pump pump up a slope? CanadianTrapper I saw the same thing happening. I guess if the top of the tank is lower than the bottom of the spring box it would work. But the overflow at the bottom of the tank also has be scratching my head.

@RobRichmondRPG None if any at all. PVC is used not just for sprinklers. but is is the water main from municipalities to the home in almost all homes built after the 70's. The only downfall to PVC is the algae build up that can occur over many years if the water is not often used. I chem shock and thats all gone.

I don’t understand how the inlet and the outlet of the storage tank are at the same level. Won’t the water just flow straight out? Wouldn’t the inlet need to be at the top of the tank? Please help as I’m looking to build one of these systems

My spring doesn't have much drop in elevation. I know how to do the collection and spring box. My question is you collection container the water is going in the bottom of container. I think thats how mine needs to be done. How does the container fill if its filling from bottom

@@backwoodsboy8355 I did the same thing. I used a food grade barrel and based on Carolina's measurements was able to cut two barriers from one barrel.
Nice video. Answered a lot of questions except one. I have a spring about 150 feet elevation above my house and want to do gravity feed. Can I have the collection tank right after the spring box and pipe from that down to the house? With the amount of drop will I need to have a pressure reducer? Thanks in advance.

Have a spring coming up out of the ground making everything waterlogged and soggy... have dug down about a foot and found a spring with water flowing pretty good. Have temporary dug a trench to drain the water to the stream and dry out the ground. I want to capture the spring water and pipe it underground over to a nearby stream. I don't need the spring water - I want dry ground!. Does it matter what sized pipe is use to transport the spring water to the stream? Does the volume determine the size of pipe? Any suggestions would be most welcome. Flow is pretty good but have yet to determine the volume. Ground around spring is just slightly sloped to the stream 40 feet away. Stream has a bank drop off of about 2-3 feet.
How does the sediment not enter the pipe going to the tank? It looks like if the height of the water was high enough to enter that pipe and there was a steady flow of water the sediment wouldnt settle right? So if it doesnt settle it would eventually make its way to the holding tank so what would prevent it?
My spring is 600 feet up steep grade. Can I run it straight into the spring box. Then into a holding tank. Its very difficult to get to the spring to build anything
But the water is just gushing out like a garden hose.
@Engineer775 does the backwash cap go onto the overflow output to block and actually allow additive to flow back into spring? Is that how it works?

Thank you. We developed our spring this past winter (in the Pittsburgh area) We are having problems with the catch basin leaking. We originally used red clay, then we tried bentonite clay, and finally we used portland cement on the bottom of the catch basin. We still have a small leak but since the yeild is marginal, it can sometimes make the difference between h2o and no-h2o - Do you have any other references you can give to other variations on the catch basin? Thanks for any info you can give.

what about smaller size pvc pipes after each station 7/8 from spring to spring box. then 3/4 from spring box to tank and then 1/2 to house would that not be enough pressuer with out a pump?

Jeff Lowe same question here. I have watched this video few times and i can't figure why you would would attach the pipe to the bottom and not the top. even if it is down hill the pressure would increase as the volume of water increases???
The cistern, when actually used in an onsite system, will be at a lower elevation - and longer separation - than the depiction here. The top of the cistern would be lower than the outflow from the spring box.
Thus the cistern would fill to the top - and - there would be added benefit of the entire length of the pipe feeding into the cistern (from the spring box outflow) adding to the overall water pressure.
Further, the supply line would/could be kept under ground to protect against freezing, whereas one running to the top of the tank might be harder to protect.
Hello I'm new to your videos and have a question? I live on top of a hill and I have a spring that is below me about 300ft. I understand that I need to collect the water going down hill (Gravity) once I do that is there a pump I can buy that will pump the water up the hill to a tank about 300ft? Also can I filter the water for drinking into the house?

Will this system work in sub freezing temperatures? I live in upstate New York and I would like to properly develop the spring on my property for drinking water.
