- Clemson had national title hopes going into the 2023 season, but after just one weekend, it is over. They got upset by Duke and this was an embarassing loss for the Tigers. Today, I want to talk about the loss, what this means for the program and what went wrong, enjoy!

One of the biggest victories in program history. The last time Duke beat a top 10 team was 1989 against guess who? #7 Clemson😂

1) The play calling didn't look any different than the past three years. 2) Klubnick kept throwing into double coverage. 3) How did they keep turning the ball over in the red zone? (Fumbles and blocked kicks) 4) Defense failed to contain. 5) People kept saying Clemson was playing man coverage, but they kept leaving one receiver uncovered and alone. Duke didn't have to get too creative or accurate to distribute the ball. 5) There was no fire on this team with some exceptions (like Shipley). They were not frenzied or excited, they had no sense of urgency. 6) Multiple times it looked like Duke was getting tired, and Clemson is much deeper, but they really didn't utilize the hurry-up offense or keep a rotation of fresh players on Defense. 8) There were multiple plays where the defense had the ball carrier surrounded on every side except in the direction the ball carrier was going in. How does that happen and keep happening?

It’s is NOT a portal issue. The talent was there.
The problem is Red Zone offense and Fundamentals. Mistackles, drops, and fumbles.
Look at the bowl game vs TENN - Clemson marched up and down the field and stalled constantly in the red zone.
One fumble last night going into the end zone turned into a 14 point swing that wrecked everything- because Q4 in an inspired hostile environment with a quality QB… rough.
The game really wasn’t as bad as it seems, and the issues are correctable.
But at this point, you are now looking at possible locker room problems.
They can right the ship, but they’ve got to act fast.
To put this into perspective: This 21-point win was Duke's largest over a ranked opponent since claiming a 34-0 victory over No. 9 Colgate in 1942. Got that? 1942! 81 years ago. WWII.
The problem is the playcalling. It has been for the past four years. As a Clemson fan, I was hoping that the Garrett, Riley hire would change things. But last night was evident that Debo was still holding the Raines. An interview the day before, Deb mentioned how he wants his coordinators to help manage the team, but didn’t explain how. It kind of leads into question if Garrett, Riley even had the playbook in hand. The calls were very stupid and dumb in every situation that they were made, seemingly to point to the fact that Deb was still making the calls. The issue wasn’t Kade. She wasn’t the defense. The issue is the playcalling. You would think this would be a very simple fix, but that stubbornness has allowed us to go into mediocrity.

Respectfully I would have to completely disagree. Cade should’ve had at least 3 interceptions. His decision making is an issue. Also there’s no breakout receiver for Cade to throw to. If I was the offensive coordinator I wouldn’t want to call downfield pass plays knowing my quarterback is gonna put the ball in harms way. Play calling wasn’t perfect but Clemson was moving the ball fine. You have to adjust play calling to fit the situation. I’m not sure what the biggest problem is with Clemson but I don’t think it’s play calling. At this point I’m leaning toward lack of player development or talent mis evaluation but anyway that’s just my opinion. I could be way off base.
@@brooksmoore7967 Clemson was moving the ball because of Will Shipley, and because of dump off passes that went for 56 yards each. With 56 blue Chip recruits on the field compared to two. You should be able to dominate the field on both sides of the ball. Not with screen passes up the gut runs, and short slants. That’s something that can help. You win the game but it’s not going to help you dominate as Clemson should. I agree Kade should’ve had 3+ interceptions and only got away with one. But someone needs to step up in the wide receiver core, and Cayden needs to build some confidence on his downfield passes.whether the coaching staff trust Kade and the receivers or not, they need to build a team that is able to dominate the field on both sides of the ball.
@@bennettconnelly7899 you make a great point when talking about the coaches need to trust Cade to throw the ball downfield but I’m just saying that this particular game may not have been the time to go all out. Especially once your down a couple of scores. More turnovers would have been disastrous at that point. I agree that those play calls are probably not going to work against some of your more stiff competition. I just felt like it was the right kind of calls for the situation in which they found themselves at that time. Some kinks will be worked out and trust will come.

@@jessemoorhead7059 they did talk the “New and improved offense “ up like it was going to be something we haven’t seen before during the summer . I was hoping that with a new offensive coordinator we would get a fresh play book but it’s the same plays that have failed us for a while now.

I'm A Clemson fan, but if Dabo doesn't take advantage of the portal Clemson won't be able to compete at the level necessary to win another national championship.
Something needs to change for Clemson in the coaching.

Your channel got me watching college football this my second year watching it can someone explain why good teams always face bad teams week 1?
To act as a warm up or preseason before facing rivals, and inner conference games later on.
They don't play preseason games in college football. Playing cupcakes allows a more talented team to make mistakes and still win, hopefully. It also allows a lower tier program to get some publicity and a nice payday for the university. The home team usually has to pay the travelling team for non conference games. Usually quite a bit of money. Alabama payed Middle Tennessee $1.6 million for last Saturdays game.
It also helps spread the wealth of larger programs to the athletic departments of smaller ones.
Duke is NOT a bad team
Those smaller programs make a ton of money playing Powerhouses.. It can end up funding a large portion of their program playing that single game

It's not over, but it is in way. Their team is no good. Means they will lose several more. Clemson has now lost 3 out of their last Four games. Dabo is no great Coach, he had Two of the Best QB's ever for 6 Straight years. Both are now among the best in the NFL, They carried them to Two Championships. Clemson will go back to being 8-4, 9-3 at best. JMO
I am an LSU guy .. we have an out of touch delusional coach too...... we are projected to play Clemson in the Birmingham bowl now.

Cade did kind of some make some costly/questionable throws and receivers did drop some passes an the one handoff in the red zone wasn't to clean an they hkept having turnovers in the red zone an missed field goals. This team had the 35th ranked SOS coming into this season. Now they have five ranked opponents on their schedule, including the loss to Duke. IF they ran the table you are talking about beating three more ranked opponents to seal the deal. Their chances are slim to none based on the current performance and now that they arguably have a top five SOS.
want to know the most painful irony hidden under all this? Clemson's qb from last year is currently finding success at Oregon State. That may not last but still, Ouch!

Watch duke from last year.....they were in every game.....clemson was ripe for the picking. Its that simple.
I made it to 1:30 before that annoying noise in the background made me lose interest.
There's only one way a 5 star QB would show up and my Oregon State. I'd like to thank Clemson and Dabo Swinney for making it happen. What happened in Clemson was Dabo Swinney. He clearly doesn't have the ability to hire a staff to maintain the level of success Clemson has had over the previous decade. It really looks a lot like Brent Venables was the real mind behind Clemson's success. They've fallen off since he departed, and it looks like he has OU headed in the right direction.
They were already sliding when he got out of town…multiple 3 loss seasons since 2020.
I think no receivers drafted since 2020 also…
Dabo had the Two Best by far QB's From 2014-2020'. Great players around that Jeff Scott and Vennibles recruited. Now Dabo looks like Gilligan on an island, all by himself. Ever since he said OSU was 11th, and till made the playoff in COVID year, They have fallen off a Cliff. Dabo is not a great head Coach, he is a good General manager of a team.

Which team had more yards? Which team had more first downs? The game was not a blow out. The problem is the red zone turnovers, and block kicks. 5 trips to the red zone that resulted in 0 points, twice where Clemson had first and goal on the 1 yard line. The game was much closer than what you are suggesting.
3 tough games left in FSU, ND and UNC. Maybe Miami. Maybe NCSU.
While Dabbo doesn’t dip into the transfer portal much, you have to admire his loyalty to his recruits. Too many times you see recruits get screwed over by some junior or senior transfer parachuting in over a prospect they worked hard to recruit in the first place. What usually happens that prospect transfers out and screws a recruit somewhere else. I think Clemson will be fine but they may find out fairly quickly that Klubnik may not be the guy. Time will tell.

If a college team doesnt have a receiver that has to be double covered, it will be tough on the offence with the middle clogged up. Shipley is great but all great teams have a receiver that needs to be double covered and that means one less up the middle.
Couldn't execute. Duke beat a bunch of teams with losing records last year, too. Didn't matter though.

I had you guys winning, but much differently than how it played out. I thought it would be a shootout with the edge being Duke's experience at QB. I'm not sure why Duke isn't being recognized. They've got the right coach and the right system for where the football program is at right now. They can compete with more talented teams, and win, as we just saw. They should be ranked, they just embarrassed the #9 team in the country in prime time.
