Reason and Reaper are the only DAWs out of the dozens I've been through that I find straightforward and whose layouts are nonconvoluted and sensible enough for me to be able to use them second-naturedly without having to babysit a DAW rather than being free to mainly keep my mind on doing tracks.
Rewatched and Learned some new stuff in the last section! More Reason please, Paul! Genre breakdowns like the UK Garage, Vaporwave, prod. techniques whatever
Somehow I missed this when you originally posted it. I just upgraded to 11 Suite last night. Happy beyond belief. Loved your Synthwave and Vaporwave Reason videos.
Wow Paul excellent video! I have been Reason user since version 1 and recently I moved to Logic using Reason as VST but now it looks like Reason is so cool and powerful I'm gonna be using it again and again!
Up to this point I have held back on upgrading to Reason 11. This video has given me some things to think about. It occurs to me that even with ALL the rack extensions I have the upgrade just may be in the works.
Blocks is fantastic! Last year I managed to whip through a twenty track album in a month, just by sketching out the arrangement first and filling the sections in. Such a cool feature.
@@PaulOrtiz Couldn't agree more I think it's the most underrated feature within Reason and no other DAW has this so clearly defined. It would be amazing if more videos highlighted this.
@@robbiemichaels2347 I must admit that I glazed over and even resented blocks on their introduction as complicating the workflow - but sounds like I should give them another shot. Prob time to read the current manual anyway, after 20 years since V1! :)
Victor Donati Hoestly give it a try. All songs are written to a structure and time frame and Blocks is fantastic at arranging or rearranging songs or ideas
You should do an advanced Reason tutorial series. I would gladly pay for it. Or, release it on groove3. I know my way around reason fairly well, but I always find something new and useful from your videos!
Exactly the video I was looking for!! Thank you :) Ok I'm convinced to upgrade from 10 to 11....now watch as they release reason 12 next week...doh! lol.
Tio be completely honest, all that was demonstrated is all posible in old classic reason devices, this is basically a more modern approach of how we use to do things back when reason was a simple rack, in order to achieve some of this results you have to do some wiring experimentation and some CV as well, but for me the sweeper tends to do be more experimental and more flexible than the new flanger quarted witch is nice that they included a frecuency especific section.
These tutorials aimed at the advanced Reason user fill a real void. How can we support you in making more of those, Paul? Masterclass videos (e.g., Mr. Bill for Ableton), Patreon?
Hey! Oh I just sequenced a bunch of different song sections all within the same project and put the instruments for them in their own rack columns (click and drag on to the wooden divider to make new columns).
Ah still only 12. I guess you could keep a copy of the original at the end of the project (or maybe in an unused block?) and then shift 12, bounce to new recording, shift 12. Or depending how long it is, just Grain it.
@@PaulOrtiz Yeah I'm torn between abelton and reason now for just these little things. I've been using reason since 5 and am now experimenting with other daws to see what works best for my workflow. I appreciate the response.
Eden - No problem! Ableton looks super interesting although I’ve downloaded the demo and couldn’t make heads or tails of it. Definitely a few small things I’d like in Reason but the routing, automation, global undo; wouldn’t be without it now. Plus it looks cool. Satisfies my need for all that gear I can’t afford ;)
@@PaulOrtiz Haha i feel you. Yeah I learned abelton in a couple weeks off the trial. Im thinking of trying to rewire reason within it and see how that goes. Never stop experimenting and learning. Thanks for the video. peace
Good video. In my opinion, Reason would be way better if it included stuff like limiters, better maximizers, direction mixers, multi-band compressors, sub-bass effects, etc. Logic is way better for mixing and mastering. It has a lot of stuff that you don’t get in Reason. However, these past two years .... it’s incredible how much I’ve been getting inspired to make beats in Reason. I’ve been using Reason since version 2.5, and I’ve made hundreds of beats over the years. I was nearly going to stop using Reason when I was using Reason 9, but when 10 was released I was very inspired to carry on making beats. I wasn’t that impressed with the new features in Reason 11 though as in DAWs like Logic Pro, all of that stuff could be done since Logic Pro 7 ... hell even in versions before that. Reason still has a long way to surpass Logic and Pro Tools. I prefer using Reason for making beats ... and Logic for recording, mixing and mastering.
Thanks! Whatever workflow works for you is the right one. I know people who write in one DAW and mix in Reason, or vice versa. I don't think the intention is ever to match the likes of Logic any more than Logic has any intention of matching Reason. Just different tools I guess. That said I hear you on the built in multi-band compressor! Obviously you can build, or buy one. But it'd be nice if there was a dedicated device. With ya on that one :)
I totally respect your opinion. Your videos are excellent. I'm just confused how Reason could be your favorite sequencer. The rack? Awesome. Mixer? It's good to great. The sequencer and overall DAW features seem pretty far behind options like Cubase, S1, Logic, Live, etc.
I think it depends what I’m writing. If I’m using CV sequencers, Players, pattern devices and lots of automation the integration with the sequencer is just so fluid and easy (Reason’s automation is so much better than Cubase with clip behaviour and static values). There are some things where obviously Cubase is a more sensible option (if I need things like expression maps for example). I’d say the main things I *need* in Reason’s sequencer are folder tracks and MIDI note chase/preview on nudge. Honestly that’d be all I’d need. I don’t do a lot of audio editing. And Players fill in a lot of the gaps like auto theory, step recording, etc. Hope this explains it a little better! But totally agree there’s room for improvement :)
@@PaulOrtiz That does explain, thanks. There isn't something that has Reason's weird mix of CV, interesting rack extensions, and the players. I really like Reason, and I'm excited the direction it's going. Development seems to be moving faster too. Please do consider a video where you go over how you use players. That would be awesome.
Quartet breaks Reasons realistic devices model because when device mode is switched it changes the face of the device which cant happen in real life. I guess it could represent a change of front panel.
Hey Lee! Good catch - I will update in the video description that this applies to Standard and Suite. I actually didn't know this myself until just now!
@@PaulOrtiz Thanks Paul! I love your videos, and learned so much from the synthwave tutorial you made. There's a lack of up to date reason content these days!
You can make as many columns as you want in the standalone version! Just drag devices onto to wooden divider or into the blank space next to the last column.
@@PaulOrtiz Thanks, I just subscribed to your channel. When you get a chance, maybe you can help me setup a Artist Mix within Reason. The only thing working is transport functions.
the email that sent me here had the worst title: "You’ve heard about the Reason plugin, but what about the DAW?" If you only know Reason as a plugin, then you don't know what Reason is at all. are people really paying 200+ for this software and not understanding what it is?
Well bear in mind a lot of the buzz lately has been around the VST. And in my circles at least a lot of people fell off the Reason train around 5 and have no idea it’s the full package now! So always worth reaffirming I guess :)
Just now implementing crossfades, reasons really good for its instruments and workflow and that's why I use it as a vst plugin. There are way better DAWs out there for production, why I haven't used it since reason 3. Reason rack plugin is what brought me back.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos, Paul!
Add chord track to Reason 12
last time i used reason in 1998. I m going to get the 11 suite. Thx for inspiering me. Take care.

Clear concise with no unnecessary padding, well presented.

Nice video. It always staggerers me that hardly anyone uses "BLOCKS" which to me is one of the most fantastic yet simple tools for composing songs

Hi there!

Does it have retina support yet?
Can you automate pitch on samples past 12 semitones up or down? That's one feature I feel is still missing.
