David Bailey is the absolute best MX/SX commentator EVER! The insights into every detail of what a rider is thinking or doing is great! I could listen to him all day!
I was there, Bailey was a metronome, Johnson effective, O'mara always "throttle wide open". September 1986,Sunday,great time 👌❤️. Impossible to forget... Saluti, Antonello, Genova, Italia.
Close. Ryan Villopoto 2007 Des Nations was the greatest performance ever . Attached is a article comparing OShow's performance to Villopoto. Both are rare Legendary performances. motocrossactionmag.com/amp/flashback-friday-ryan-villopoto-dominates-the-2007-mxdn/
@@goldsbym I think that the best motocross race is that of O'show in the nations of 96 a major, I was present, I remember that that 125 laps at the top of the race and passes people like Thorpe, Jobe, Mhalerbe, champions of the world with the 500 two-strokes that had triple the horsepower of the 125 on a track like Maggiora is an epic feat, 35 years have passed I have seen many motocross and supercross races even in the states but a race like that of O'Mara in Italy I haven't seen her since
@@albertolupo9754 I have to agree that was a legendary performance and I put that ride as good as Villopoto 2007 Des Nations Budds Creek Villopoto on a 250cc won both motos against the 450cc. Not only did he win, he won both motos. In the 1st moto he had at one point in the race over a 30 second lead. He even wrecked, because of a lapped rider, got up and still won by 15 seconds. Ricky Carmichael was in that moto. Beating the goat by 45 seconds on a 250cc, Carmichael on a 450cc , is to me to most impressive performance ever. In the 2nd moto Villopoto won by over a minute lapping up to 11th place. But O Shows ride is certainly one of the best for sure. Mitch Payton of Pro Circuit was asked what he thought the best performance he had ever witnessed and he immediately said Villopoto 2007 Des Nations. However his opinion is probably biased, because Villopoto was on Mitch Payton's team and bike that year. Same goes for me, I have watched both of those performances, and they are both so rare, we will probably not see many other performances as those. Just my opinion. Attached is a article by Motocross Action magazine talking about both O Show's and Villopoto's performances. motocrossactionmag.com/amp/flashback-friday-ryan-villopoto-dominates-the-2007-mxdn/
@@goldsbym villopoto is a legendary champion, nothing to say, but I had already seen O'Mara in a test of the 125 world championship in Switzerland, he had replaced Watanabe, official Honda rider in the world championship, stopped due to an injury, I think it was 1989- 1990, he presented himself in the tests driving like a cowboy, a style unknown to us Europeans, he invented double jumps and woops where the others were wrecked, on the Sunday of the race he showed up at the gate all dressed in white, gaiters on white boots and had gave a show in both heats by winning them and humiliating the Europeans, geboers, rinaldi, my other idol, maddi, welkeneers, etc. etc, from there my sima was born for O'mara, when he came to Italy for the nations he raced with his heart, the difference between a 450 4t and a 250 4t is not as clear as a 125 2t and a 500 2t, the difference is abysmal and if you put the two bikes in the field on a track as more than the 500 driven by world champions with a small 125 it becomes an epic feat and the level of the cyclist at the time was not at the levels of now, that day O'Mara ran with the heart, pilots of yesteryear, I saw them again at the superbowl in genoa the following year, Bailey, Glover, O'Mara, Magoo Chandler, Ward, even there a show memorable for us Italians who did not know what supercross was, if not from the newspapers and photos that came from the USA, I could stay here talking days and whole days talking about mocross and the champions of the past when they showed up on the competition fields with a van, a mechanic and a lot, a great desire to run
O´Show passing Thorpe on a production 125, and World Champion Thorpes on a full works 500 HRC bike, Omara being extra terrestrial is the only explanation.
It seems like I re-visit this video every few months or so....it is by far my favorite motocross video or movie that exists. It isn’t just the masterful performances of Johnny O’Mara, Johnson and Bailey, it’s the narration by Bailey that makes it even more special. O’Mara’s ride on that 125 is so historically significant, it goes beyond a representation of his skill, to a demonstration of the cliche’ often used in sports, “heart”. He absolutely transcends the physical capabilities of that bike and lays down what can only be described as PERFECT. It’s truly a beautiful thing to watch and hearing David Bailey give his heart felt story of the event makes it even better. First class, from a time that was the peak of the sport in my opinion, before the lawn mower racing👍😂
“Lawn mower racing”. My thoughts exactly. In 2018 I was at the MXdN at Redbud. I had a pit pass and happened to be at the KTM tent when a mechanic pushed Jeffrey Herlings’ bike out and started it up. I was standing there thinking, wow, that’s probably the most expensive dirt bike in the world but it still sounds like a lawn mower.
Yea me too, but maybe for a different reason. I don't know about you, but I did not cry because of a great past, but a crappy present and future comparatively.
Ima have to say THAT JEAN MICHAEL BAYLE WAS THE SMOOTHEST FASTEST RIDER EVER. HE CAME OVER HERE AND BEAT OUR BEST IN THE 250 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE 500 CLASS IN ONE YEAR
Far and away the best moto video ever! It was the best of times in American motocross and this was it's greatest moment. David Bailey's commentary makes it. He takes you inside their heads and brings a 30 year old race to life as though it was yesterday. When he says "that day, we were kings" in a large way he brought that sentiment to all of us motocross fans. I remember the pride I felt as moto fan and an American for their accomplishments that day. Side note: In later years, through the kindness and generosity of friends over many years of racing attendance, I got to know David's mechanic Cliff White. This guy is not only a genius but even more, one of the kindest gentlemen I ever met.
Josh G: "When he says "that day, we were kings" in a large way he brought that sentiment to all of us motocross fans. I remember the pride I felt as moto fan and an American for their accomplishments that day. " Me also Josh. I remember thinking, "Man, I am involved in the best sport in the world, and a fan of the best athletes in the world." In my mind that day, (when I read about it in a mag), I could have finished 4th. :)
I have been a fan of motocross for sixty years and there's no way anybody can argue that the USA have put the best team forward with something like 17 wins.
The first time I noticed David Bailey was when he was on a Blue Bultaco at High Point raceway in 79 or 80, he was there parked with his dad getting the Bultaco ready for war. I don't think he did that great that day , but little did I know that this kid was to become one of the best motocrosser's that ever lived. Also saw him once in Lima Peru at Manchay raceway a place I grew up in by destiny , but wouldn't give up the opportunity to see a American come and show his stuff down there . Davids injury was such a heart breaker , to this day and films like this one serve to have all of us remember how good these guy's actually were, that goes for Johnny and Rick also. Awesome narrating too, Thanks "Little Professor" , hang in there.
I’ve seen this race more times than I can remember. This presentation was like seeing it for the first time. I felt like you were an old friend and we were sitting by the campfire reminiscing over old Moto times.
This brings back all of the memories, feelings, excitement, and any kind of emotion for me. Johnny O' was the best 125 rider for that team hands down and Honda mad a bad decision to let him go. Thanks to everyone responsible for this video and for David Bailey for narrating!!
Honda did get rid of the 3rd best rider in the world, as they were RJ, Bailey and O'Mara at the time, and it did look like a mistake to let him go by the end of this event. But after that, Johnny could not make them sorry. I think more than anything, leaving the team and his best riding buddy David Bailey,---hurt his winning spirit that he may have retained if Honda had told him after this day, "Here is a new contract.". We will never know. But the fact of history is, Johnny could not make Honda sorry for letting him go, so we can't say it was a bad business decision. Irony that Honda lost RJ and David by injury in the next 2 summers. I guess you could call it Karma, but that would make RJ and Bailey victims of Karma. Just thinking. :)
I spent quite a bit of time as an up and coming 250cc motocross rider at Indian Dunes in Valencia. During that time, it was usually Erik Kehoe winning the minis, O’Mara on the 125’s, and Donnie Hansen on the 250’s. O’Mara’s 125’s were so finely-tuned that they used to bark in the air. Nobody rode the 125’s like he did. Amazing to see him keep up on a much lower-powered bike in this video. I miss those old Indian Dunes days.
Thanks for sharing. It was a historical race. Last time Honda had 3 legends on their roster. I doubt it will every be repeated but i hope the day comes again. Great times.
Awesome video and hearing David's thoughts made it amazing! I grew up watching these guys, they were extremely talented guys but also good people. My wife took care of David when he was in the spinal cord unit of her hospital. She still remembers what a super nice guy he was even in the middle of a life changing tragedy like that. Thank you so much David, Ricky and Johnny for being some of the role models of my generation that were easy to respect.
I have never seen a race Finnish like that wonder what the score keepers were thinking. I've heard of this race and read about it through the years but never thought I would watch it. What a treat. Thanks.
I watch david bailey as a kid and he was a hero to me. in 2005 I was racing my 1984 cr500 at omc in boise id vintage race. there was a man cheering like crazy sitting on his quad. I was only running third I thought that strange. after the moto the quad rider came over it was David Bailey. I got to shake my hero hand he said it was good to see a air cooled 500 racing. he gave them way when Honda gave them to him for practice bike. best day racing yet
Excellent commentary! Thanks for this! Takes me back to my childhood. 26 bikes later and 63 years old and I still enjoy a few hard enduros every season. Interesting that the Japanese manufacturers patronized the Americans for about a decade to boost North American sales. It worked! Street and dirt. It was a golden age.
Incredible race! Perfection. I was fortunate at a young age working for Oakley and knew all of our sponsored riders. I would set up all the goggles for the riders for every moto and practice. So I was able to help out in a small way. You would not believe how many goggles, we set up every pro race. Didn’t know David Bailey at all, but spent time with Johnny and Ricky at races and photo shoots. Both those guys were funny characters away from the track. On a side note: What David was talking about David Thorpe was absolutely true. David was such a gentleman and clean rider. I would spend a little time with him when he would come to the U.S. I’m glad The American riders showed him respect.
O'Mara was the fastest 125 rider I ever saw. That was a great performance, but, we can't forget the one year that Danny Chandler won all 4 motos of the Motocross and Trophy des Nations. He was on fire that day.
So happy to have finally watched this race. As a teenager, I remember reading about this MXoN race in magazines, but watching it 36 years later, brought back lots of memories of my teenage years. David Bailey was one of my favorite riders because he was so smooth and such a nice guy, and this video proves his worth. Thanks for posting this video.
That's awesome narration from David Bailey... great rider back in the day ... ps i guess you can have those... as a fan steals his goggles off his helmet lol...
So much talent on one team! 3 great riders and The Man DeCoster as team Manager. All 3 of these riders elevated professional motocross. They all brought training to new heights and were excellent spokesmen for the sport. I really enjoyed those days of AMA racing. There was so much talent and so many riders that could win in any race. DeCoster has also been heavily involved in advancing the development of Motocross bikes in to the modern bikes , we have today.
The USA Dream Team all riding Honda and all the top riders in the USA. David Bailey, Rick Johnson, Johnny O'Mara. I watched this race on TV back then and I was going crazy watching Johnny O kick Ass on that bad ass 125.
David, johnny and Rick what you three did !!! this is fantastic!! The best race ever! thanks for putting this together so we can see it again and again and again
That was awesome David bailey!!! I've raced two cr500s and my heart will always be with the 2 strokes....especially the 500! These were my heroes coming up also. I still get saddened thinking of Bailey paralyzed so early in life and career. I've always wondered what the ending would have been had he not gotten hurt! My heart will always be with you david...everytime I twist that 500....
I dont know what to say.....you all great the american and also the european...such a graet time for this sport..make me tears ....thank you David thank you David Dad!!!!!! Best sport ever....let bring back that.....!!!!!
David, I had watched this once before and as I was looking at some Danny "Magoo" Chandler rides, I found this video. You are truly a gracious champion, your description of how it FELT to be so dominant at this event was great insight and made me feel proud of the way you all rode. Johnny, Rick, and you made it a GREAT day to be an American!
thank you David. I was a fan of all the great pros of this country, and of the world greats like DeCoster,Wolsink,Carlquist ,Mikkola, etc. Watched them all at Carnegie,Sears Point,Carlsbad. I was an amateur who was inspired by watching the best, like you. You and O'Mara,Johnson, MaGoo, Hannah,Lackey and all the others made the US the best for a while when it mattered to me and other weekend warriors. Your narration was very moving and exciting at the same time. Hope all is well for you and yours.
Bike prices, (thank the FIM 1986 production rule, and the 4-stroke forced on the industry by the EPA dictatorship. Both caused bikes to at least double in price in short time., as outside intervention on free enterprise always does.), and the loss of riding areas. There are no really good racers from Michigan anymore. Kelly Smith was the last one who could win. It is so bad in Michigan, and we are so confused about what happened, Kelly Smith was on our local radio just a few months back, begging Mason County Michigan to build a track so kids have a place to ride. Looks like the sport, like our health care industry, has been nationalized. But a track in Ludington will not be built by the city. Nobody here even rides anymore except some of us old diehards.
The greatest motocross Racers Bailey Johnson and Omara. Dominated the greatest motocross Race of all Times, it will be talked about for many more years to come.
David thanks so much for sharing this, I remember your victory is why I bought my CR500 wish I had been smart enough to keep it. One Industies and your Brother did and amazing job with your Dads video congrats to all
Great video on a great American Des Nations team. Really enjoyed the narration by both Larry Huffman and David Bailey. How sad that David ended up in a wheelchair, but "that's racing" and the sport involves tremendous risks. Also liked his respect for the current world champion David Thorpe, which makes David an even greater champion in our eyes.
Greatest MX des Nations team of all time!!! Made you proud to be an AMERICAN!!!! Not sure what happened over the years but the event seems to have lost its luster!!!!!
I have to lift my hat for you 🇺🇸 I'm swedish and my friends such as Carla. But you was the way best team that no discussion about! Sad know you got hurt 🙏 Same happens to me I was a tread from be permanently in wheelchair! I did see this race live in 86 but I have never seen this video before! Thanks for recording it. Good speak 👌 Best regards from Sweden 🇸🇪
The 80's: A decade of USA domination in the MXDN, (81-93). I am glad I grew up in the last era where the USA actually won something, (like 13 in a row, and one team, (87), meeting the President). I miss the USA.
Thanks to everyone involved for making and sharing this video and to the whole team who gave such stellar performances on the track and never lost sight of their roll of representing their country.
I saw Omara and Ward race each other on 125s at Saddleback park back in the day , I still cant believe how fast those guys could make a 125 2 stroke go. It was the most amazing thing ive ever seen .
I love this race what a team BAILEY O SHOW an RICK JOHNSON....i was able to ride a pro national bike in a open class race an do an O show....an they DQ me because they thought it was a 250 2 stroke i was bummed but rode tje best i ever had....the 500s were blasting parts off my 125 my for guard went flying on the second turn...it was still fun...i didnt expevt my bike to have a nything for those 500s....so it was really satisfying to make a lot of passes...bailey said it was johns last ride at honda he was not offered a new contract so he was riding in thrash mode...scant regard as they say in europe..
I'm on my girl friends Computer and found and remembered this ….my favorite race of all time ! my favorite riders of the 80s and my Favorite 125 rider of all "Johnny O'Mara" ! Beating the 250 /500 European works bike on his supposingly production Honda 125cc,,,,,,Beatiful !!,,,just Beatiful !! This race raised our spirits back Home ( Hawai'i ) !,,,,Thanks David Bailey and Family for creating this Vid and your hard work bringing home the Gold for USA. ,,, ALOHA and MAHALO ! thanks for the memories

Johnny O had the single greatest ride ever in motocross history. I was 16 when this happened and was a Honda rider.
With David Bailey commentating this, it's made it the best video of this des nations by far !
Excellent video...wonderfully narrated by David Bailey
So happy to have finally watched this race. As a teenager, I remember reading about this MXoN race in magazines, but watching it 36 years later, brought back lots of memories of my teenage years. David Bailey was one of my favorite riders because he was so smooth and such a nice guy, and this video proves his worth. Thanks for posting this video.
I don’t know how many times I watched this video and I’ll watch it every time it comes out.
GREAT PIECE OF HISTORY .. ..
That's awesome narration from David Bailey... great rider back in the day ... ps i guess you can have those... as a fan steals his goggles off his helmet lol...
the three kings of motocross.Thankyou
Wish I had the tapes of my motocross days now.
Little professor aways humble with a friendly voice..on track..pinpoint accurate! Outdoors indoors you name it!
Bailey is the best story teller ever in the sport. Next best thing to being there. This would have been a great race to see in person. Unreal
I know fellow Brits say Thorpie had brake and injury issues , but a 125 ! come on , simply brilliant
Nobody can ride a 125 like the O’Show! Greatest 125 rider there ever was!
This is one of the best races in History!
Such an amazing performance!
Will never get sick of watching this vid. Oshow was the best ever on a 125 and this was amazing to see all these yrs later!
I dont know what to say.....you all great the american and also the european...such a graet time for this sport..make me tears ....thank you David thank you David Dad!!!!!!
Best sport ever....let bring back that.....!!!!!
Miss you guys, Thanks for sharing David Bailey.
Pure masterclass all 3 riders at the top of there game on same day
This was like the 1980 USA vs USSR hockey game ! What an effort by the entire team , a timeless scene
Hope all is well for you and yours.
one of the best vids ever
you are a gracious gentleman David.
Im so proud of you three, we haven't forgot what you accomplished all these years later in 2021.
Merci pour cette superbe vidéo qui nous ramène à notre jeunesse ! Vous nous avez fait rêver les américains . 🤩
The best days, when Motocross WAS motocross, not outdoor Supercross as it is now. There's a reason we don't see crowds this huge any more.
A beautiful film about and told by an amazing champion.
If I could give this 1000 thumbs up I would! Good times!
David thanks so much for sharing this, I remember your victory is why I bought my CR500 wish I had been smart enough to keep it.
One Industies and your Brother did and amazing job with your Dads video congrats to all
DB has to be one of the best commentators ever….and a fabulous rider..!
Most epic MX race ever!
Thank you David, Gary and Mitchell. This brought back so many memories. I so appreciate the work you put into this.
I have to lift my hat for you 🇺🇸
I'm swedish and my friends such as Carla.
But you was the way best team that no discussion about!
Sad know you got hurt 🙏
Same happens to me I was a tread from be permanently in wheelchair!
I did see this race live in 86 but I have never seen this video before! Thanks for recording it. Good speak 👌
Best regards from Sweden 🇸🇪
This is the peak of brilliance here! And arouses deep feelings of patriotism within me!
The 80's: A decade of USA domination in the MXDN, (81-93). I am glad I grew up in the last era where the USA actually won something, (like 13 in a row, and one team, (87), meeting the President).
I miss the USA.
Great US team effort. Johnny’s 125 performance is one of the best in MX history.
He was arguably the fittest rider in that time period. MXDN that year was unbelievable, and Johnny "O" bested them all.
David Bailey great watching yo race -equally enjoyed your announcing as well.
Thanks to everyone involved for making and sharing this video and to the whole team who gave such stellar performances on the track and never lost sight of their roll of representing their country.
Every American invited to the des nations needs to watch this. How could you not dig deep?
Class, style, legend. That's David Bailey.
I saw Omara and Ward race each other on 125s at Saddleback park back in the day , I still cant believe how fast those guys could make a 125 2 stroke go. It was the most amazing thing ive ever seen .
You are an amazing Rider & what you achieved was Incredible well done 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
The best race ever. Ever.
Gracias por compartirlo Dan 👍 saludos
So good i had to watch it twice in a row. What a Team. Thank you David and your brother for making this.
I'm on my girl friends Computer and found and remembered this ….my favorite race of all time ! my favorite riders of the 80s and my Favorite 125 rider of all "Johnny O'Mara" !
