As a Maine forager and nature lover, that's a big ditto. You could run the motor getting wherever, or sing a tune, but better to let the area's predators know you are coming. Bears are out now and, coyotes in packs out all year long...and believe it or not a few mt.lions; however the cats are the wariest, and will watch and follow you if you don't keep that humongous chain saw on your shoulder. Obviously, it seems someone is filming him, but still....

As a European, we don’t have this much gators and snakes in our swamps and also no coyotes. More Wildhogs. But if you don’t met them with their piglets, they will go an other way. 😁

It looks to me like it's the stump from a long needle pine and more than likely it's turned Into lighter wood. Just a piece of it about the size of your little finger will start your fireplace.
This is definitely oak. I already had to cut down bog oak.

That’s a serious chainsaw. The wood is already heavily checked. Not expecting that to improve in the drying process. Should be good for some smallish blocks for turning, etc.

I hope when you dry these out - that they don't shrivel and crack all over the place. This should be some very nice and fine wood rings.
The whole problem lies in the drying. It's very difficult for them to dry. They will lie in a dark, cold place for a couple of years.

The stump is “wet” so I think wet sawdust would get stuck in the chain and sprockets, more often? Pita!

Doubt that carbon dating is very accurate. If it was that old it would have been completely rotted away after 5K years.

A friend of mine, his cousin was cutting pulp and his saw kicked back and cut his leg and he bleed out before anyone could get to him. The people working along side him rushed to him immediately and there wasn't anything they could do for him to save his life. So safety closes when operating chain saws is a great idea.

These underwater hardwood pieces take on unique properties. When they're underwater where light wont reach, they lack the organisms and light that breaks the wood down and causes rot. So old wood found under swampy water is pretty unique stuff that can be made into some awesome products.
