I have tested this and I can easily see even 1% glyph scaling on 9pt text in regular viewing distance with a font I know well. I would rather have some rivers than these distorted letters. Expect maybe in text passages where you can't rewrite and word spacing would get especially bad.

THANK YOU! I still wish there was a tool to easily doctor with partial issues elegantly, though. Like...selecting the word(s) that are causing trouble, and then let the software calculate the best possible adjustment/options for a fix.

LOVE technical stuff like this. I always get into debates with people when they ask what size should my text be in a magazine, brochure, book, online, packaging etc. The question I ask that person is how much text is needed? Most times they go over board especially in catalogs. Would love to see more tutorials like this one.

    Thanks, it was very informative.
p.s. There is a double space infront of "bridle-making" in the 11th line from the top, but it gets "fixed" when new Glyph Scaling settings are applied.

Very interesting and helpful. Please notice that audio seems to be 2 or 3 seconds earlier than the video.
Glyph scaling, I admit it improves the general appearance, but as someone who learned to set type with lead type, it gives me horrible goosebumps. Brrrrr. :)

I'm a graphic design student justifying text for the first time - my teachers have always told us not to, I think because they've decided explaining all this is too technical for my course.
Can anyone tell me if these settings are likely to work for most typefaces? Can I use them as a general rule of thumb? Or do I need to spend time experimenting to see what works best for each one I use?
    Thank you!

There used to be a key command for justified text that replaced the word spacing by adjusting the letter spacing of the following characters. Shift - Spacebar maybe? I've used it so often it is a reflex causing me to forget the key command! What happened to that feature?

We do this but keep the jpg as the base and only paste the psd on top, so as not to bloat the file size with 2 PSDs

Using OpenSans with these parameters (German language) doesn't look really good and is already hard to read on computer. Letter spacing is too high. Word spacing is too small. Are there further recommendations or proposals for hyphenating and justification depending on font style, language (?), text in columns, device etc.

This is “an absolute alien world “ to people in digital workspace - all the type setting focus goes out the door , there is an absolute disregard for type design in digital world ie. 3pt type in apps………?????
