  • Happy Juneteenth!
    It took two years for word to get to all slaves that they were freed! The good news got to the last remaining plantations in Galveston, TX on June 19th, 1865. That's why it's called Black 4th of July or Black Independence Day.
    Can you imagine the reaction of African American slaves when they were told that they had been emancipated? I did. Here's my satirical take on what the very first Juneteenth might have looked like in Galveston, TX.
