I apologize for not washing prior to getting into the onsen. I honestly didn't realize I needed to, but I have learned now, and that's my mistake. Sorry about that, and will remember for next onsen time.
It's like that in Europe too. You wash prior to climbing into a pool, public or not. In fact, most shower before taking a bath. Has something to do with hygiene. Also, you forgot to tilt your head sideways and look all cross-eyed when you entered the onsen. In a 20 minute videos, subs expect at least eight of those.
Mark is such a pleasant person and does a very good job of describing food he's eating. He would also make a good sales person for his selection of accommodation. All the best to you and family. Sweetmarie from Jamaica.
I love food and travel and have done tons over the years. Sadly, I have terminal cancer and so Mark is my eyes, ears and tastebuds to provide such entertaining vlogs. Mark, you do a great job well. Thank you. Barry
I think we all need a Mark in our life to stay positive & not missing out all little things to appreciate. I wish you strength and strong hope. My grandmom was a cancer warrior for 12 years and she won. hugs!!
Damn, Mark. You are truly moving up, up and up! The level of food you've been having recently certainly shows it. Continue doing what you do, so that we can all live vicariously through you!
Chivas Aurora It's a duel edge sword IMO sadly. As the RUclips money comes in higher and higher with more views and likes and now that he's surpassed 1 millions subscribers and even launched multiple channels he's living it up. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I'm afraid he's going to pass up his old demographic group that watches for "budget" travels and street food. Yes it's nice to show us all the nicer places to stay and eat at, but many also like the "old" street food stalls, hole in the wall, mom and pop shop, diner, and dive, etc. I hope he still offers variety. As someone who travels to Asia every year, I enjoy it all. I can eat off a "questionable" street food cart in the morning for .75 cents to eating the $130 buffet dinner at the Ritz Carlton at night. I just hope he offers that in his future videos as I followed him originally because of his old "10 things to do in ______ City" videos.
Funky Chicken Did you see the Philippine and Cambodia tour? That was mostly street food. And that's not too long ago just weeks that went by since those trips were posted.
I love Sunday mornings when we get to see a new video adventure that you prepared to share with the world. They are becoming a near religious experience! You are so appreciated for the quality and joy that each video delivers.
one thing i really like mark wiens coz he appreciate everythings in life...! before i sleep i always watch his vlogs.. coz its really inspire me... being positive and how to be positive person..! 🥰
Mark, if no one has let you know, the mystery salty-meat-like food in the tiny pink cup for breakfast is what they call "Katsuo Shutou" (a.k.a. "Katsuo Shiokara" ) which means, fermented salty bonito innards. Also, the half-boiled egg in light broth sauce is called "Onsen tamago" which means Hot Springs Egg. Usually, the temperature of hot spring for bathing is near 40C degrees. The chicken egg boiled slowly at this temperature, the yolk will cook faster than the whites of the egg so you get the half cooked yolk and slightly runny whites. To enjoy it, next time, you should scoop up half of the yolk, whites and some broth with a spoon and slurp them up in your mouth and then chase it with hot white rice.
Thank you very much for watching this Japan food series, this is the final video. Next video, stay tuned on Wednesday for what I think is probably the best video ever so far on the channel... Jerusalem!
I love this guy I get Hungry just watching...very family oriented...and when the food is good that look on his face is priceless....thanks Mark for sharing this and all the food and trips with us!!!
I am so glad you did an episode on Kaiseki. It is truly the quintessential Japanese cuisine, as well as one of the oldest (as opposed to Sushi which is a relatively new style of eating in Japan, being introduced in Edo in the 18th century). And to make this episode even better, going to an Onsen and staying in a Ryokan is super traditional.
Great video Mark. By the way, I have been voting for you every day for the past 3 weeks, about 20 times a day, so about 600 times so far. I hope you win the Saveur Food Award. I will keep voting and voting every day till you win. Keep the great videos coming. I really enjoy them. Thanks, Wayne.
Don't feel badly, Mark. I had no idea you were to wash prior to getting into the onsen. You are so grateful, and gracious and appreciate of everything, it brings my spirit to a higher level just watching you and appreciating you.Very few people are like that anymore, at least in my part of the world (USA). Thank you for being you, thank you for sharing your sweet little family with us-Ying is such a perfect match for you. I'm sorry that Micah had a rough night last night. The dishes certainly were quite beautiful the artfully arranged foods were placed on. I am so happy that you and your family was able to experience the total Japanese experience! Blessings to you and Ying and Micah ;)
Same here I didn't know that too. I would have done the same thing. But they clean it anyway. Back off trolls, Mark does a great job and is a whole lot better than others on RUclips.
Mark this was soo good! They lay out the treasure chest of food for you, and leave you alone to watch and taste and explore at your pleasure. And you were so utterly comfortable with the comfort. That yukata felt like second skin even from here. So good!
Even if at times, I don't like his choice of restaurants in cities I know, etc.... I still love his genuineness and the way he approaches everything with love and just genuine curiosity and enthusiasm.... One of the best, if not the best RUclipsrs out there!
Have you noticed, he does not interact with other people on camera ! He lets others make fools of themselves. Smart on-camera skills! But he seems like a genuinely generous and a "nice" person in spite of some hard knocks --- is my guess -- since he had to live his school-age years in several countries around the globe!
Your videos take viewers away from the realities of their mundane lives into things that they enjoy most--- escape into eating food and being entertained !
That's got to be the best of your videos. I almost felt as if I were there. I enjoy watching you and your family on these trips. Thank you for the experience.
Mark your videos are absolutely FANTASTIC and I love your commentary about the Foods of the world. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing all of your videos.
Thank you so much Mark for showing one of the most fascinating meals for me, the Kaiseki dinner. Just absolutely stunning, it's one of my lifegoals to visit Japan and specially a Ryokan, this was just a pleasure to watch. Have to thank all of you so much for sharing
Kaiseki meals are incredible, so beautiful to look at. As a foreigner who can't read the menu, it's really fun because many of the ingredients and preparations are unfamiliar, so it's really an experience of discovery
I love that Mark took an adventure to experience food and travel in a unique fashion! His true love is clearly the food of the people in the native essence of cultural appreciation! Great video Mark. I enjoyed the experience!!!!!
Don't forget that Mark challenges all of us to follow our dreams. And Marks beginnings were very humble. If food travelling is your dream - then start dreaming. All tools and informations are out there for you to grab.
It's possible to make travelling to your work and Vlog/Blog about it and get paid for it, why not starting :) Mark had around 8 years to be at this point, it's impossible to be there by tomorrow but I think of like "in a fiew years this could be" as long you put much efford in it, why not giving it a try ^^
Hi Mark. That ryokan looks very relaxing and the food looks gorgeous. I think the salty food in pink small dish for the breakfast is fermented squid called Shiokara. Hope you had a wonderful time there!!
I love watching you eat! You savor every bite! I enjoy your traveling experiences with such a genuine smile and a very positive outlook in life. I admire you traveling with your wife and son.
Thank you for sharing Mark, great job! Love the culture, sights and food! I like how you brought a new dimension to your videos, it's not always about the food, it's other things too.
Love your channel Mark! I recently went to Rome and visited all the places you ate at. From the 150 flavours of gelato, forno roscioli to the pasta family run business. They all were delicious and worth the visit. Thanks for making such amazing videos and suggestions!
Marc goes to many Countries, meet many people who serve him the best food, inside, outside, in restaurants, or even in their own home. Marc is their guest. They know that they are filmed, and will be published on line. It is important for them in term of international public attention. So it would be impolite, impertinent, irrelevant and counter productive to respond to the food given, in a negative way. I admire Marc courage to eat anything. And I also admire Marc courage to eat ... so much ! Sometimes Marc has to go through 4 hours of eating food. Marc is blessed with a very active Metabolism. He is not gaining weight at all ! And Marc is blessed with the joy of travelling and the joy of experiencing the savour/ flavour/ aroma/ fragrance of so many Countries best food. And to share all this with us. As Marc is so very good at describing his sensation of eating : "I am going to take a full bite of this" Smile ... "Woah" and his face is changing, from the pleasure. Finally, if Marc says : "this is unique" it probably means that this time he does not like the bite that much. Like when the food is too dry, or too sweet, or too salty, or too starchy, something like that. "juicy and tender" this is what Marc likes the best. Smile.
77k yen is very expensive but i guess it’s worth it because the food, place, and service is really good. I’m here in japan btw. I wish i can afford a ryokan like this haha
Mimi mali I used to feel the same way, until I saw his workout video. Lol. He loves to work out and move around and sweat, so he burns more calories than he eats. He also isn't very fond of sweet or starchy food, and he loves chilies and black coffee, which boost the metabolism. It just so happens that his preferences lead to a healthy lifestyle. Lucky guy. :)
I never really had a true desire to go to Japan like other people. Until I watched this video. Wow wow wow. I'd go JUST to stay at that hotel. I'd just sit outside all day long. So beautiful.
Mark, great video. Just a couple of tips for next time. I'm not being critical in any way. I had to learn all this stuff, and I 100% sure I will get something wrong in my tips. You should always shower and clean yourself before entering the bath, even a private one. Also do not put your yukata belt and robe on the ground of bathing area or the floor, it's considered disrespectful. Also you mentioned the meal was more bland, part of that was there is a method to eating kaseki. This includes order and using the condiments which may have not been clear. You can watch lots of great videos that explain how to eat these type of meals as they are very complex and intimidating. Doing so will result in a much more flavorful meal. BTW, the strong tasting fishy item you had at breakfast is Shiokara. It's basically salted fish guts, often squid. It's eaten alone with drinks like sake to enhance the flavor, but it can also be used like a condiment, so small touches of it on rice can enhance flavor to other items. Thanks for the amazing content and glad you got to experience this. It should be on everyone's bucket list as there is nothing else similar to this experience. If you try it again, do it during winter where it snows or in fall when the leaves change and it's cool at night. It's like a whole new experience from a spring or summer visit.
This is the kind of comment we should see.i agree on being hygience, but since he didn't knew the japanese way,it ok. I don't really get people giving negative comment about this issue.not a big deal.why are people acting like they are japanese themselves when they are not in the 1st place. To me,he didn't knew, not like he knew.
Michael Latham It is a private guest room... he can throw it on the ground if he likes. It must be avoided only in the case of invitation to one's house
Michael Latham Plus he was charged $700 a night. It wasn't for free. As long as it is his temporary private residence he is free to live according to his standards and ways
it seems that the Japanese have really come upon the ideal formula for existing. a country, a little smaller than California, but with the second largest economy in the world [editorial remark: I believe, at this point, china has surpassed japan], and one of the safest. a culture steeped in tradition and achievement, its cuisine, elegant and pristine, exemplifying all that is Japanese.
He eats the food and does that signature move of his. It kinda seem like he is rubbing it in our faces how the food tastes great and we sorry watchers just melt our faces as he does all that. So mean but so satisfying at the same time.
I challenge anyone to leave a hate comment about mark. I honestly could not if i tried, he’s just such a great person who releases such honest, positive, down to earth content that I have become addicted to watching! When ever I have had a stressful day, there is one thing I do and that is watch your videos! You are an inspiration and you’re changing the game my friend
Hattrick Generation well, for 2 persons it wasn't that much, we do have a Ryokan in Switzerland too, but the cost is: one night, with Kaiseki Dinner, 500$ plus, per person!!
Hi Mark, its bein 1 week since I subscribed for your channel. The good thing about you is when you taste all the food you eat your face shows it too and it pops up in your eyes! Its like everything is delicious. Im enjoying your channel. God bless u and your family.
He is not fussy when it comes to eating different cultural foods. I really like that. Not so easy for me however I need to try a bit harder. Its good respect. Thanks mark :)
Watching your channel makes me so relaxed and actually keeps me away from my vices and bad habits. It's always been everyone's dream to either be a rockstar, a millionaire, or a world Traveler, I don't know if you're a millionaire, but you're definitely a rockstar and a world Traveler. Thank you for all the hard work and effort that you put into your Channel. Ever since I started watching it has really helped me with my anxiety and other issues. You're the best.
I apologize for not washing prior to getting into the onsen. I honestly didn't realize I needed to, but I have learned now, and that's my mistake. Sorry about that, and will remember for next onsen time.
:D
No problem since you did not know. Now you know.

it adds to the taste, hehe
Thank you for your consideration.

Ikr? He is such a kind heartrd person.
In my humble opinion, Mark Wiens is the best youtuber. He just uplifts my spirit. Such kindness.

Japan..is a must for travel enthusiast ..it's just too beautiful serene clean ..nature is wow..those purple flowers on plate so beautiful..

To me,he didn't knew,not like he knew.

It is a private guest room... he can throw it on the ground if he likes.
It must be avoided only in the case of invitation to one's house

Plus he was charged $700 a night. It wasn't for free. As long as it is his temporary private residence he is free to live according to his standards and ways
Hater let him live and learn...
Mark abroad. You have a fantastic life. Nice family. Enjoy the life "and be happy.

Mark...great video ...is almost possible to feel the sensation...
You and your family are worth watching. Plus you sure know how to explain all the food in a nice and sweet way. Love from the northeast of India ❤
Around the world 🌍... mark is only one person who eats from mouths and 😯 testwows comes from his eyes.... 😍😍😍 lots 💕 loves from nepal 🇳🇵
it seems that the Japanese have really come upon the ideal formula for existing. a country, a little smaller than California, but with the second largest economy in the world [editorial remark: I believe, at this point, china has surpassed japan], and one of the safest. a culture steeped in tradition and achievement, its cuisine, elegant and pristine, exemplifying all that is Japanese.
This video definitely make me want to go back to Japan. :)
Bro i love your reaction which show you after somthing eaten
Padmanabha Chakraborty yes
He eats the food and does that signature move of his. It kinda seem like he is rubbing it in our faces how the food tastes great and we sorry watchers just melt our faces as he does all that. So mean but so satisfying at the same time.
OH WOW!!!!THAT WATER IS SO WARM AND WATERY.
Mark, the red side dish at the end is called ika o shiokara. Salted squid guts ;) I love it
good to know.
Hello... Mark... I love ur all videos
Well done.
5:15 Me : oh he's going to be nude in front of camera
5:20 Mark : Tadaaa!
Max Haibara he's a pervert I'm telling ya! lol
The thirst is real
Made me feel the gold was coming out
By Japanese custom, he should have washed before he entered the bath. Shame about nudity was only introduced by Americans after WWII.
I think if he hadn't been in front of camera he WOULD have gone in naked. I sure would have. No sense wasting the experience with clothing!
I watch Mark's videos only when i am eating something, so that i won't feel bad while watching his super amazing videos. Good work
The total price though.... I feel so poor ahahaha
Hattrick Generation well, for 2 persons it wasn't that much, we do have a Ryokan in Switzerland too, but the cost is: one night, with Kaiseki Dinner, 500$ plus, per person!!
`it wasnt that much` are you out of your mind.
I had a dream that i want to see mark and his family and have dinner together once in a lifetime but it was only just a dream. Haha 😂
Hello mark wiens and yeng and Micah great video
Hi Mark, its bein 1 week since I subscribed for your channel. The good thing about you is when you taste all the food you eat your face shows it too and it pops up in your eyes! Its like everything is delicious. Im enjoying your channel. God bless u and your family.
He is not fussy when it comes to eating different cultural foods. I really like that. Not so easy for me however I need to try a bit harder. Its good respect. Thanks mark :)
Damn that's expensive 😒 but the stratification in your face is worth more money 💰👏🏼👍🏻❤️
For the price he paid, it seemed like lackluster food. With that said, I'm sure the relaxation and cultural experience was well worth it.
Shannon McGowan the experience is the taste not just the look
Wow so refreshing
Watching your channel makes me so relaxed and actually keeps me away from my vices and bad habits. It's always been everyone's dream to either be a rockstar, a millionaire, or a world Traveler, I don't know if you're a millionaire, but you're definitely a rockstar and a world Traveler. Thank you for all the hard work and effort that you put into your Channel. Ever since I started watching it has really helped me with my anxiety and other issues. You're the best.
Thank u Mark for showing your room, bath, garden & just a great video.
