it was clear that when Igor gave her the ring she felt that a way to show her gratitude was to use her body. You can tell that when Igor doesn’t respond in an overly sexual way and just stares at her in her eyes and tries to kiss & hold her she tries to fight but can’t hold it in anymore. The trauma and embarrassment comes to a head with his sincerity. At no point is it implied he feels owed any sort of sexual favour. when he’s sent to the house he’s the only one who doesn’t judge her for being a sex worker. it’s also establish that they’re two sides of the same coin: they both have no loyalties to the ruling class and they’re both used for their bodies. that’s why he sympathises with her. I do feel that the film is a great commentary on how the lowest classes of societies are just play things for the rich. Heartbreaking but beautiful
I think it’s interesting also how Sean Baker plays with stereotypes. For the whole movie Anora is judged for being a hooker before anyone even knows her for real. The only person that doesn’t seem to judge her for that is actually Igor. However she judges Igor, she calls him a “(now I don’t remember the term sorry)” when they are at the cafeteria, basically what’s a stereotype of an Eastern European/slav man (=a guy that wears adidas tracksuits and deals drugs). She basically attributes him many stereotypes and he constantly proves her wrong but she can’t see that, at the same time she can’t explain why he shouldn’t be like that. In the scene where he says he’s not a rapist, she can’t explain why he shouldn’t be one. The same is done by everyone else to her, nobody (again except Igor) gives her a chance to be someone else, or to be treated like a person that it’s not just a stereotype of a sexual worker.
@@danielledasilva1031And the changing of name from ani to anora show the journey...... firstly the girl called herself as ani but in last when he was introduced to the mother of the boy she introduced herself as anora....the igor always tells him anora ...anora is her true self.....
The ending was a full-circle moment from the beginning of the movie. It started with Annie and the other dancers on mens laps and they were facing forward not connecting to the men just grinding on the men for a transaction no connection. The ending was perfect because she ended up on a mans lap facing his face and the man actually wanted a connection vs transaction.
From the scene where he’s holding her down to keep her from hurting herself and others, I knew he was going to be the true heart of the film. His constant looks over at her, him standing up for her and demanding an apology, him not taking any of her jabs to heart because he knows it’s her way of protecting herself… Igor was the only man in the film that actually connected to Ani. And in the final scene, it makes sense that he’s the person she finally breaks down in front of. Their initial “violent” embrace towards the beginning of the film was now loving and sympathetic, and I found that to be beautiful.
I think that Igor genuinely liked Anora. For me the moment when he gave her the scarf to protect her from cold was an indicator that he actually cared about her. When she breaks down in the car, is a delayed emotional reaction to the whirlwind of events. Knowing that her Cinderella moment was all based on an illusion. Ivan was no Prince Charming.
He liked her from the very beginning. Even when she hit him and he said it was impressive. When he first got to the house he noticed very quickly she had done nothing wrong, and was truly loving there as a new bride, and was about to have the rug pulled out from under her. He was trying to talk to her from the beginning.
That's a good indicator. Actually the first soft spot from Igor came in the plane when he says Vanya owes her an apology. It's also the first scene where Igor goes from someone hired to abduct Anora and get her to annul to someone who actually has genuine feelings for her.
I feel like I noticed it right away and I have no idea how other than I guess kudos to the acting because from the very first scenes where he’s trying to hold her down something in his eyes felt so sincere and like they were looking at her like a real person that I immediately thought to myself “ok but I’m kind of into these two together” only for the movie to continue to drop more and more hints that validated what I had noticed.
I think it could also be argued that Anora, perhaps unconsciously, wanted to feel close to Igor and that’s the only way she knew how. She’d just experienced something so intense and traumatising that she definitely needed some support.
igor is a better looking guy and women like a poor handsome dudes and use a rich ugly guy.as far as the kid when he gets mature he will be able to get women prettier than anora who are not known hookers.
@@isabelsanchez1835 this scene showed her TRAUMA. Not from what had just happened w the Russian boy. But the trauma being that she doesnt know what love is. This was revealed to her in the car. So when real love was actually presented to her, by Igor, she didn't even know how to handle it properly. She realized this. It was revealed to her. And then to top it off, the cherry on top, she broke down because of what had just happened w the Russian boy. But the bigger pain was that she realized she has issues that she needs to work through.
Yeah, i feel she broke down when he wanted to kiss her, but I don't think he gave her the ring for something in exchange. He is genuine, and he was reciprocating her impulse, but she breaks down because she realized "this is how I think I have to say thanks" and he really didn't want an exchange of things. That's explained in their previous interaction in the house. He doesn't think like the other ones because he is also like her, poor. He told their boss "vanya should apologize" and that came from him, not from any other place. Finally, he embraces her and she breaks down and accepts the hug.
I agree I think the kiss was what triggered her to withdrawal and pull away. I think it was a subtle reminder to the audience of the true nature and mentality of Anora at her core. For a lot of people whether they're sex workers or just promiscuous, kissing crosses the line. In a sense it's a way to compartmentalize, a way to separate work from pleasure, A mask against emotion. Initially she intended it to just be a display gratitude but, Igor's passion and genuine affection towards her after the whirlwind events of the week, caused her mask to come down causing the damaged done by the past weeks events come crashing down on her all at once.
anora saying she doesn’t like his car which is belonging to igor’s grandma (something genuine, igor’s gma is mentioned multiple times, clearly important to him) also shows her initial resistance to his genuine kindness and humanity but in reality she is really grateful. anora then responds in the only form of gratitude she knows. despite that she breaks down then showing she is really hurt treated like a disposable worker.
Yes. I've seen some backlash from idiots who claim that the actors are supporters of Putin and should be cancelled. Borisov even starred in an anti-regime movie in Russia which the Russian government wanted to ban. Most Russians and Armenians are regular people as well, just like anyone else.
I love how Igor becomes such an integral part of the story. Usually in a movie his type of character just shows up as the goon henchman for a split second who is completely disposable. But in Anora he is there for most of the film so you see him as a fully three-dimensional human more than capable of showing love and compassion.
Igor and Anora both come from poverty, this is hinted at by the slur they keep referring to Igor by. Igor gave her the ring as a way for her to come up. They are kindred spirits. He feels bad for her throughout the film. He feels sympathy and tries to care for her. We see this with the scarf and by him keeping her warm on the flight back to NY. He never wanted anything from her. She thinks he's like everyone else (that wants her for what she provides) and that's why she previously asks him why he wouldn't 🍇 her if he had the chance. She then proceeds to demean and belittle him for his response. The ending shot shows to her how much he truly cares and that's what causes her to break down. It was finally someone who ACTUALLY cared and wasn't using her. Igor truly didn't want or expect anything in return. He gave her the ring as a way to help her.
What I really loved about this movie is that its not at all what I thought it would be. Going in I thought it would be a complicated love story. But man I was wrong. Her " love interest" was barely in the movie and it was more about her coming into realization that her love story was just a fantasy and how tragic life can be for a stripper/prostitute. A fucking masterpiece man. Hats off to Baker and Madison. 👏👏
indeed, it's a reversed / rewinded remake of Pretty Woman :-). And that's the difference between Hollywood (selling the dream of transforming a sex worker into a princess) and Sean Baker who is coming from an Independant / social observation film background.
I felt that in the end Anora realized that Igor truly cared for her and wasn't going to demand anything from her. As her last defensive wall fell, she lashed out in anger at Igor for making her reveal her true self. She then collapsed in his arms and accepted him fully as someone who honestly seemed to love her for exactly who she is as a human being.
Loved your in depth analysis into the class aspect. To me Igor was probably the heart of the film because it seemed out of all the characters, he maybe was the least obsessed with money and power- which his morals led him to protect and see Anora unlike the others, & stand up to the oligarchs, even though looking out for her & helping her wasn’t his obligation or had any gain to it. & I think the kissing at the end was definitely an attempt at connecting with her on his part. It’s tragic because it would seem Igor’s concept of sex is actually for love, and that being warped for Ani along the way, now seeing sex as only a tool for money & power, has added to her missing out now on genuine connection. It could be assumed she’s maybe been very hurt by men in her life, and a lack of control physically or emotionally, which genuine sex and vulnerability can allow, is also a very triggering concept to her. & Igor’s shock in that moment following the attempt to kiss her almost looked like to me a “oh my god you’re actually this damaged” way (not in a judging sense, but painful one). & one could assume Igor carries probably some of his own damage as well. Which solidified for me his care for her as he was quick in trying to help her in the best way he could- through comfort and just being there to stay.
One could argue that Igor has been raised by his grandmother, who happens to be very sick and in pain (remember her pills). His grandmother might actually be a nice person with good values since he hesitates to give away more of her pills. The guy is actually going through a lot, which is probably why he can sense her pain right off the gate.
I thought the ending was a "this is as good as it gets, I'm working class and will always be" type of defining moment for Anora. She cried out of shame. If you've ever been dumped or rejected by someone who is above you on the social ladder, you know what I mean. The movie is a brilliant modern story about social class and caste.
But who would have wanted to be a part of Ivan’s awful family? They had money and power and nothing else. Where was their happiness? Anora - if she’s smart - could have happiness with the guy who really cares about her - that’s a good reason to pick a partner!! The acting in this film was superb - to the whole cast 👏 👏
@lisaviv I agree with you. But Anora probably didn't see it this way. She wanted to be accepted by Vanya's family, and she failed. Thus, she got rejected not only by the family but by society as a whole. That's painful.
We dont see anora and vanya kiss during sex once bcuz those werent filled with love. But when igor tried to kiss her, it was a tell that he wanted to make love, not just have sex. Which is new to her and that sincerity broke down her final wall and all her emotions came out.
I feel like Vanya has never had real friends because he is so rich and knows people like him for his parties, his money and like Anora he knows mostly transactional relationships.
In an interview, director Baker responds to the theory that sex in the ending was a sign of gratitude given in the only way Anora knows (with her body) as follows: “That’s one way of looking at it. I definitely have a different interpretation. It’s designed in a way that allows for different interpretations. I do see it more of it being about her and not really something that she’s giving to him but something in which she’s now regaining the power that she lost entirely throughout this journey. We’re playing with different themes, and one of them is consent, and when he then tries to kiss her in that moment, that’s crossing a line for her. It’s like, ‘No, I’m in control of this moment.'”. If you notice during the whole act she is serious, cold, determined. It's as she's back to work. The kiss (not allowed during a strip) breaks this dynamic of control, making her react violently by also letting all the desperation that she had kept inside until that moment out. Obviously she would not have done that gesture if she did not feel gratitude and perhaps a beginning of affection towards Igor, but I also find this explanation convincing. That said, I hate when directors leave open endings. They have an idea about it, so might as well share it clearly.
i broke down when igor showed anora the ring😭 then seeing her face when she slowly starts catching on. i had seen through out the movie that he genuinely cared about her but that one scene was just beautiful and i can never forget it ❤️😭
I think she broke down not because she didn’t want igor kiss, instead, she was tired of herself abandoning everything , tired of her identity as a sex worker. She tried to do things on igor like how she does as a sex worker, but then she realised she never liked the job, only money, and being prostitute has already affected her mindset. She was desperate to stay with Ivan so that she could get rid of the identity ‘sex worker’ forever. Everytime she heard people calling her as a prostitute, she went insane. Even when Ivan called her that on the plane, she shout at him too. Not just because the betrayal from Ivan, but the anger at herself that she chose this path. The ending scene in this film is so resonating. I feel what she feels in that cry, it was breathless to me. Throughout the movie, it hits me which no other movie does. The characters building, the feeling expression, they are all too relatable, so human movie. Everytime I jumped back to the ending scene, it just shattered my heart. Even when I listen to the soundtrack ’Greatest Day’, it doesn’t give me a good mood, but a feeling of the sun before storm. This movie will forever stay in my no. 1. This is the only movie that gives everything, literally I wanted in a movie. But if they can make the movie to 3 hours, zoom in more on Ivan and Anora’s romance, then more on Ivan’s escape so that we can be more decisive to hate this character. The igor and Anora line is perfect, not too much, not too less.
I think Igor really liked her, he did bring a scarf for her, and cover her up on the aeroplane. I don't think he was after her sexually. After all if he wanted to do something he has the whole house with her that night he slept downstairs. Anora couldn't connect with him emotionally. When Igor gave the ring, Anora just wanted to give something back as a thank you I suppose she got the wrong idea. Because that's all she's known. But you can see he was looking into her eyes and he wanted to kiss, she didn't want to kiss him so she started hitting him but then broke down when she realised he wanted more then just sex he wanted an emotional connection because he didn't see her as just another sex worker.
I think Ani’s comments toward Igor about R*** are very concerning. Based on that conversation, how comfortable she is with selling herself, and the ending of this film, I’m lead to believe something may have happened in the past. She’s so damaged and after everything she went through in this film, being sold a fantasy then having it ripped away, being abandoned, demeaned, threatened, abused, and finally discarded like trash, her breaking down at someone wanting to have a genuine connection is heartbreaking.
I balled. Couldn't stop crying for 5 minutes straight. For those who don't understand the internal process it wouldn't seem that deep, but for those who understand Understand. Obviously she was poor and fatherless (heavily implied since he was never even mentioned.) She truly bought into this dream come true where she believed the proposal meant love and hope for a better future. It may have seemed naive to regular people, but people in desperate situations are more susceptible to this kind of offer and manipulation because their deep longing for love and a better life. After the betrayal set in and the fantasy collapsed, and she realized she was used like a plaything once again. She shut down. Notice no matter how bad things got she never cried until the very end, because girls in her position have learned to hold emotions inside. She knew Igor had done a kind thing for her, but she was defensive because she doesn't believe anyone wanted her for more than "play." That's why she got one top of him to "repay" him for the ring making it transactional to maintain control rather than internalizing his gesture as true kindness and interest in her. When he tried to kiss her, it triggered that pain of enormous distrust after the heartbreak, disappointment, and objectification she had just gone through. The gesture of kissing signifies real intimacy and vulnerability that she couldn't bear in that moment. I'd imagine so many women with childhood trauma and/or women in her line of work have experienced this internal struggle and conflict. It's heartbreaking. I say this not to excuse anyone's seemingly irresponsible life choices, but to shed light on the potential internal process as to WHY they may make these choices.
Anora's final scene highlights its emotional depth and the subtle ways trauma shapes her actions and perceptions. In the end, it is Igor’s gentle approach that breaks through the walls she has built, allowing Anora to finally experience a genuine human connection.
Her cries were the deep screams of a broken soul finally letting go of the control she had over her emotions. She had truly believed in that marriage, in the Cinderella fairy tale life, with Ivan as her prince and savior. There were so many moments of betrayal that she refused to believe were real: Ivan leaving the house without her, her self-consoling thought that he had no choice but to leave without her because of the guys, Ivan being unreachable on phone and not even attempting to contact her, his lack of positive response when she finally found him , and Ivan’s mother treating her like trash the first time they met. Yet, through it all, she still held onto hope. That hope shattered completely when Ivan told her they were getting divorced just before boarding the plane-and then, on the plane, he called her an escort. She sat in a state of shock throughout the journey, struggling to grasp the raw reality of her life, realizing she meant nothing more than trash to everyone. In just a few days, she had been lifted high, feeling as if she had touched the sky, only to be brought crashing back down to zero-lower even, having lost the little respect she once had at her previous dance club. But, as rough as it may appears to be, in the whole movie she has never expressed a sign of true to Ivan. She was with him only for money despite she appears to like him. Sitting in the car, staring at the stairs that led back to her former miserable life, she knew there was no other way but to return. Climbing onto Igor felt like an act of gratitude, doing what she had always done with men, now fully aware of the harsh reality of her existence. Her refusal to kiss Igor was her way of resisting affection and holding to emotions, but eventually, she gave in. The hidden accumulated pain of her soul finally screamed out. That was so heartbreaking and so realistic. Many can relate such feelings and emotions. Mikey Madison is another level of an actress.
I just saw it yesterday. I kind of sensed Igor had some feelings for her. Maybe he is in love with her. Maybe not. Igor was the only one among Vanya, his parents and the hired men who was actually willing to see Anora as a human being. That moment came as the annulment was finished and Igor says Vanya owes Anora an apology.
That film went balls deep on realization and I enjoyed every frame from this masterpiece. It has comedy, sex, anxiety-induced claustrophobia from Uncut Gems, and an ending that floored me that had me silent.
you nailed it right on the head...Anora breaks down when igor tries kiss her because Vanya ruined Men for her. I think Igor was being genuine when he tried to kiss her but now she has trust issues with all men, and that's why she broke down in the end.
7:51 i saw that igor wanted to kiss anora but she was pulling away, he didnt let go, so she hit him, and he still wouldnt let go, and then she broke down.
@@3rdARKnight counter point, If your raping someone, they might break down crying If the content of the scene was that she was being raped, of course she would break down, and an embrace might just be him forcing her to stay I think I may rewatch soon just to analyze the scene more but also cause it’s a hella good film
@@minionlover4576-bq8jkthat’s interesting because I didn’t get that vibe at all, especially after my second time watching. he pulls her down for a kiss a few minutes into their sex scene which implies to me that he felt they were both into it enough to deepen the intimacy. He clearly wanted connection with her and lets her take control. she’s given her agency back for the first time since before meeting vanya and when he tries to kiss her she completely shuts down because it isn’t meant to be like that - this is supposed to be an emotionless transaction for her. I think it’s kinda ambiguous what she really feels about being pulled into an embrace, but i hope her breakdown means she felt as safe as she could in the kind of situation she’d found herself in. And, judging by Igor’s characterisation up until that point, I don’t think there’s any reason to believe his actions were anything but genuine compassion for her.
I watched the movie for a second time with my parents last night, and my dad thought the ending was incredible (my mum was exhausted and went to bed before they finally got the anullment. She did like the movie though). I loved the ending as well. Personally I think that the ending is just her having a release. She has spent so much of her life thinking she owes men sexual favours that any sign of affection could be interpreted as sexual to her. So when she finds out that all Igor wanted to do was just show her that he cares about her, she has a sort of emotional release. It almost feels like too much for her. I've seen people call the ending gut wrenching but I find it kind of heartwarming in a weird way. It really does put her character into perspective. Utterly fantastic film.
Igor was a genuine man and Anora admired that, but it just revealed all the trauma in that moment when he tried to kiss her. She isn’t used to love and connection, and it seemed her fling with Ivan was the tip of that iceberg, before it all came crashing down into reality. I also thought it was a great representation of what comes up must come down. There’s always strings attached, especially with the extremely wealthy. If anything it made me appreciate a simpler life with real trust and connection more.
A pure masterpiece movie!!! My movie of the year!!!! I saw the movie 5th time already 🥶🥺 and every time I cry like the first time watching the movie 😭😭😭😭
As i sat there watching i just knew Igor had gotten the ring from Toro. Probably as Toro was sleeping on the plane ride back from Vegas. And then when Anne didnt go inside after the ring was givin to her I figured she was going to thank him in a different way. What I didnt expect was her breaking down. I wanted to weep so hard myself. 😢😢😢
After watching this movie, and I left the theater from the ending feeling confused, your explanation of the ending was perfect. I didn’t comprehend it at first, but it all made a lot of sense. Thank you for this.
Thanks for a really well done Anora Ending Explained! Keep up the good work! P.S. I haven't watched Anora yet but now I'm a bit interested after watching your Explained while I watch the Variety interview video - Pamela Anderson & Mikey Madison | Actors on Actors. The thing is I found Mikey an interesting actress to learn more about in her chat with Pamela. Any way, cool video. Keep up the good work!
That’s her way of showing gratitude. It’s the only way she knows. She feels sad because she realises that Igor wasn’t feeling anything with her way of saying “thanks”
Anora's world was firmly rooted in money and sex - this was her normality. She felt that Igor was broadcasting something else to her, which was incomprehensible, but could definitely be meaningful to someone. Having quickly analyzed the chaos of events that happened to her, she tried to express gratitude to Igor using one of the currencies familiar to her - sex, and he mistakenly took it for chemistry and passion - understandable to his world. In an unexpected moment, but completely natural for each other, they found themselves in a world forgotten by Anora, where Igor silently speaks the language of care, warmth and trust. And Anora understands him.
I can tell that the film is trying to mirror Igor and Anora due to their "grandma" connection. Anora picked up her Russian from her grandmother and Igor got his car from his grandmother. It indicates their humble beginnings of being (descendent of) immigrants and having roots from a shared, faraway land. There's also themes of the American Dream. Igor and Anora are the traditional candidates of the Dream by working to have a stable life, while Vanya wants to achieve it by marrying an American (but he doesn't need it since he already comes from a rich family from another country). Once Anora and Vanya's effort of social advancement is shattered in their own respective way, Anora turns to the only person who really understood and accepted her on a personal level throughout the film- Igor.
I think we should also point at the fact that Igor gave her the ring to secure her finance after the divorce circus. He protected her 2 times. Once in the house by holding her and secondly when he gave her the ring to sell it and have some money.
She said Igor had rapey eyes, trying to fire him up to go to bed with her that night. Which I thought was quite rude after him saying he was trying to support her. Guess what he didn't follow her to bed! Igor was kind to her without wanting anything in return. I think he really values women and marriage, and mentions his nan. I was annoyed with the ending. I wonder if the rapey eyes was a reflection about herself and how she treats/thinks about people sexually. In the car, she sat on top of him, he didn't move!! Was frozen. Igor deserves better than this. She proceeds to go up and down.. Him still frozen and kinda innocent.
Wow...Igor literally kidnapped her. He tied her up. He pinned her down on top of him at the beginning of the film. I believe Anora was never interested in him. She trulh disliked Igor, Toros and the other guy. Her saying he had "rape eyes" was meant to make the audience think..."nooooo he was so nice, he wouldn't do that." Anora thought Igor wanted sex in exchange for the ring. The question is: would he have given the ring without Anora habing sex with him? A truly great guy wouldn't have sex with a girl who he has kidnapped and dragged through hell the last day and a half, especially not in his grandmother's car. He also forces her to kiss him. Anora breaking down, to me, was her realizing Igor is just like the other men she encountered and that she was probably right about him having "rape eyes"
@-Roos97- I feel like her breaking down was her realizing she can't just go on and have sex with another man after all of the bs she went through. He realizes this and just hugs her. End of movie. I thought that was perfect.
@@Jay.Rod23 This is already a better interpretation than the one I responded to because that one just sees Igor as a great man who did nothing wrong while seeing Anora as the bad guy who "was quite rude after him saying he was trying to support her" but did this person forget what he did? Is it because sex workers are intimate with men, they touch men and the men touch them, that they think the home invasion and him getting physical with her is normal? It's not. It's very wrong. But do you think she had sex with Igor because she though it was nice he took back the wedding ring for her? Do you think she actually likes Igor? I don't think so. She simply assumed it was a transactional moment-he gave her the ring and expected sex-that is why she had sex with him. Was that really Igor's intention? Would he have given her the ring without expecting anything in return? Maybe...but we don't know. But he didn't stop what was happening either despite knowing what Anora went through and knowing what emotional state she was in. During the whole movie Igor tries to interact with Anora but Anora shuts down all the contact and is clearly angry at what this men are doing to her --> Forcing her to annul her marriage, breaking into the house, touching her, tying her up, gagging her then holding her on the couch. I think the moment between Anora and Igor at the end also suggests Anora doesn't like Igor at all. Sure you can say she is playing hard to get or flirting in a jokey manner or like the other commenter say that she was "trying to fire him ul to go to bed with her that night" -_- but after all she's been through that doesn't seem to be the case, it seems like she genuinly hates the three guys she was forced to go on a manhunt with.
@@-Roos97-he was actually kind to her in every interaction. Greeting her when they met, trying to be nice, he only ties her up after she attacks him and bites his neck. The whole interaction was escalated because both henchmen were forced into the situation. Yet he always tried to be nice by giving her the scarf, asking how she feels, standing up for her. In the end he did not kidnap her, she agreed to go so she could change her husband's mind. When she goes to him in the car he's of course going to want it because he clearly has feelings towards her build up. This is why he wants to kiss her.
MAJOR Theme missed by many!!!! Anor = Pomegranate I believe they mentioned this purposely, Pomegranate Theory - the fruit is hard to disassemble but those that do it for you without asking anything in return actually care about you. Igor sacrificed his birthday, grandmas drugs, car, reputation by asking Ivan to apologize, taking the ring, pouring her a drink on the plane, lighting her a cigarette, giving her the scarf.
People who are interested in Yura Borisov's acting should definitely watch Compartment no. 6. It's a Finnish movie about a Finnish Uni student and a Russian miner (played by Borisov) who meet on a train in 90's Russia. The same themes of social differences and people not being able to express emotions are center in the movie.
In Europe, Latin America and Asia that did develop, but in the US a different narrative was carried out, avoiding that all the time...por eso lo veo como mhe esto ya lo ví 😅
I think Igor genuinely care about her, cuz throughout the film, he'd always showed compassion for her when everyone else was being mean and demoralizing towards her. It's not typical for someone who doesn't care or only want something in return to allow another person to open up and and become absolutely vulnerable while he comforts the person. From the start he understood her, he saw himself in her and he knew they're both a part of the system
she felt that was what she should do but also please dont glaze over her saying igor has grape eyes, when he wanted to kiss her and she resisted but he slightly insisted she went into fight or flight and began hitting him before finally breaking down and he just holds her because she has likely experienced grape before, her friends and her shared anecdotes about crazy men and it gets brushed off but hints at the dangers of her lifestyle. she tries to go through life at surface level and we never dig into who she is or was.
I just saw this movie last night. I'm haunted . . . I agree, the key is "grape". It's part of her past. She screamed "grape" after being held down against her will. At the end, when Igor tried to pull her towards him to kiss, she was triggered again. She said Igor had grape in his eyes when he was looking at her in a caring way. (Ugh, I wonder if the grape incident was related to her father.) So she broke down and Igor comforted her, perhaps it was the the first time anyone has ever comforted her. And, hopefully, that was her first step towards healing.
Great video :) Oh, the ending was crushing,,, This movie is something else. And the way it was directed, acted and scripted... just an amazing experience, one of those movies you can watch multiple times and each time take something more from it. I think it's pretty obvious that Igor likes Anora from the very beginning, he did way more for her than only his job. He looked a lot at her from the very beginning, he took care of her and tried to support her emotionally throughout the whole movie. Even in the ending scene when Anora compares Igor to his car, he asks "do you like it?" (you can see hope in his almost childlike face expression). And when she replies "no", you can see how a bit hurt/dissapointed he is but, being Igor, after few seconds he comes back to being this positive humble person and starts talking about his grandma.
I also think it it was a complete mental break because in the end she has to return back to poverty, and is reminded that she’s back at the bottom of the totem pole of capitalism while that kid will spend $10,000 a day like it’s nothing.
Kidnapping and assault? Annie(Anora) should have asked for more than the $10,000 they were willing to pay her. I would have demanded at least a million dollars seeing how rich they are and knowing that kind of money would be life changing.
Yeah but it is only a movie. I doubt the viewer reaction would be anywhere near as sympathetic if they threw a million dollars at her for an annulment.
@CarlBeep I think that Anora would have been more cooperative if they had offered her a million dollars but then we would have had a lot shorter movie. The assault and kidnapping of Anora sequence alone was about 25 minutes.
@@emanuellawton7942Yeah it would’ve shaved off more time from the film/story but… the whole point of that not happening was that final scene. It’s the scene most people are talking about. Impact impact impact. The whole movie was about irrational behaviour. Anora herself took a punt and went with it. If she hadn’t, it would’ve been a film about her usual everyday life at the club. Would you have preferred the whole film to be like the first 5 minutes? At the end of the day the film relies heavily on drama to keep the viewers engaged not rationality, cooperation and fairness. If that is what you were hoping for then watch Pretty Woman or even Cinderella instead. Anora is a different kettle of fish.
I think this Baker movie is clearly from the future! A timeless and original film, revolutionary for the conditions of our postmodern world. Punch in the stomach, as it reflects on the relationship of social stereotypes, with the ever-old but unborn love, and the tragedy of life that weighs much more prematurely on the awareness of the new generation. A postmodern work but also epic at the same time .A classic work of the future that arrives, in my opinion, will constitute a study, an object of research, a trigger for circles and scientific groups that will deal with the cultural and sociological aspect of their past (our present) in order to understand it better. Let us give them the best we have, we owe it, it is our duty if we want to be called human. And of course something about the end of the film: in my opinion, it touches the limits of juggling, it has something magical. While, as I watched her I was characterized by mixed feelings and desires, sexual lust, (the protagonist was so unbearably feminine and human) agony, tension, waiting for Igor's response, while there was something compulsive, I felt with the heartbreaking and so indescribably moving overthrow, as if I was finished/exhausted inside me, and not outside me. The definition of the transmutation of sexual energy into something infinitely social, co-passive, and comprehensive. In the end, Baker succeeds in uniting soul and body, showing that they are essentially indistinguishable. You just have to fight everyday to stay united and not fragment. The only thing I could compare it to is the end of Michel Houellebecq's book, called "Serotonin". Beauty will save the world, we know that well.. let's help her every day with his/her work and we will all meet together at the end, a celebration that will have many hugs and kisses..Baker, I'm begging you from the bottom of my heart, make a movie about the hope you have inside of you, but complete it. Thank you friend..
I think it’s actually very obvious that Igor does like Anora from the jump, and the film even goes out of its way to show that he may be one of those kind of men who likes mean women, which only propels his feelings for her every time she was mean to him which was basically every interaction they had from the moment they met
I felt this moment captured what classical theatre does: defiance, but ultimate powerlessness in the face of fate (or in this case society, which is as good as any substitute). The gods come out of their plane at the end and everything inside you wants some kind of fairy tale. But the gods do what they always do in tragedy: arrive just to confirm what was always true, and f*ck everyone over, including the audience. Capturing strength and vulnerability, hope and acceptance - the whole gamut of circular human experiences, Madison gives a performance to rank with the very best, and deserves every award going.
From the moment Igor met her he's always been trying to protect her even from herself. She doesn't realize that someone that really wants her is right in front of her and she doesn't understand that. At the end of the movie she's finally broken down and opened up in Igor as a chance to hold her.
The film was intentional in never showing what Ani felt about Vanya through the whole marriage, how much she actually liked him vs his money. My view is that there is a theme of light and dark. Ani and Vanya represent a young fantasy that exists in the dark, Anora and Ivan are their real selves revealed when the sun comes up. Anora insists on being called Ani because using a nickname helps distance herself from her sex worker persona. Ani’s story wasn’t a Cinderella story at all, it was a career story about a sex worker who hustled her way to the top of her field: trophy wife. There was no love, she never showed her sassy personality to him, she even complained about the sex being too fast. While the romance between Ani and Vanya was fake and transactional, Igor liked Anora for who she is. The end scene, where she cried, is the first time the Ani facade was lifted and we finally saw Anora being vulnerable and real.
When she thinks that Igor gave him the ring as a transactional exchange for sex. Her trauma has conditioned her to see relationships and acts of kindness through a lens of commodification.
There’s a reason why workers of certain profession do not kiss as a rule. When she was with Ivan you can also see them not facing each other most of the time. For women closeness is tied to hormones and being close with as many people in this fashion will chemically alter your brain and desensitize you. You detach from your body and Her being intimate with Igor was a way to thank him for the ring. She doesn’t like him. It was transactional. He doesn’t know though how to receive transactional closeness and likes her so for him it’s a genuine experience, which is something she cannot allow for her. Him actually recognizing HER while she’s using her body as a transaction and is detached, is bringing her back into the body she’s detaching from. And it’s traumatic. She freaks out. It’s not about love, it’s about how broken she is. She’s okay with marrying and living with a man for money, but can’t handle to look into one’s eyes and kiss him. She’s disgusted with them and herself.
I love their conversation and you can picture out the reality. Sometimes we just need to wake up and not live with our delusions. The world is cruel. The judgements Anora have for Igor in the beginning and just realized in the end that she's wrong. A real connection.
A+ CAST EVEN THE ARMENIAN BOSS GUY WAS SUPERB I THINK WHERE MANY MOVIE SCRIPTS LOSE IT IS THEY DONT MAKE THEIR ACTORS TALK LIKE NORMAL REGULAR PEOPLE IM NGL THE ACTRESS HAD A FINE WHITE-GIRL BODY AND SHE DID WELL TO EXPOSE HERSELF (FIGURATIVELY INCLUDED) LIKE THAT- THE ONLY CRITICISM I HAVE OF THE MOVIE IS THE MIDDLE PART WHERE, IN AN ENTIRE CITY, A GROUP OF 3 PPL TRY TO FIND 1 GUY AFTER LIKE 40 MINUTES OF THAT I WAS STARTING TO GO (ok this is getting dumb) I THOUGHT I SAW THE PLOT UNTIL THE END COMING FROM A MILE AWAY BUT IT HAD SOME REALLY UNEXPECTED AND WELL-EXECUTED TWISTS AT THE END ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES THIS YEAR IF NOT THE BEST!
I never understand why Sex Work is so looked down upon. Everyone is pretty much forced to work to survive, especially in the USA, where you for some reason don't care for social healthcare and all that, so if you don't have other opportunities, this might be the only way
She wanted to be proven as right on her argument that Igor wanted to have sex with her n when he replies finally she reacted as she would do so. She might have cried either because she validated her assertion or simply a catarsis of what she has gone through.
The ending broke my brain trying to figure it out. I think maybe that it was because she had been so horrible to igor and so nice to Vanya and it was Vanya that had taken advantage of her (her heart that is) and when he went to kiss her she realised that she had been just as bad as everyone else, just chasing the shiney expensive thing when there was real right in front of her the whole time that she had ignored in her pursuit of financial wealth. She couldn’t let him kiss her because she couldn’t forgive herself or love herself. I’m not a fan of the idea that ignore accepted sex from her and that’s why she was mad because he didn’t ask for it and she almost gives him no choice Whatever man SB and everyone knocked it the f out of the park with this one. I’m not a fan of the idea that ignore accepted sex from her and that’s why she was mad because he didn’t ask for it and she almost gives him no choice.
I agree that she can't imagine him doing something nice for her without sex in exchange. Right before she breaks down, he touches her and she flinches. For me, that small moment is key: she doesn't intend to flinch, but she does. Igor may be acting nice right now, but he assaulted her just a couple of days earlier. Her body remembers this. She isn't the same anymore. And when she flinches, her body tells her that this isn't right, reminds her that she doesn't want this. And she simply shatters.
He wasn’t choking her. He kept trying to kiss her and she wouldnt allow it. She was trying to give him sex as an exchange for the ring. But he just likes her. So she’s used to transactional, no kiss sex work. He likes her and keeps trying to kiss her. When he does that, several things happen. She starts slapping him away bc she wants to be in control of the situation like she is in lap dances and other sex work. She also starts feeling so vulnerable bc she realizes he wasn’t expecting any sex from the ring! He just wanted her to have the ring! So now she’s realizing he must just be liking her and it’s genuine. That’s too hard for her to accept for so many reasons. She was just married to one of the richest people IN THE WORLD. And it was a disaster. And the only one who has apparently been genuine the whole time is a “gopnik.”
it was clear that when Igor gave her the ring she felt that a way to show her gratitude was to use her body.
Beautifully interpreted!
This❤
Loved the way you put this
The ending was a full-circle moment from the beginning of the movie. It started with Annie and the other dancers on mens laps and they were facing forward not connecting to the men just grinding on the men for a transaction no connection. The ending was perfect because she ended up on a mans lap facing his face and the man actually wanted a connection vs transaction.
Damn, I didn’t catch that the bookends are her in guys’ laps.
I’m glad someone pointed this out ❤!!
Perfect.Absolutely perfect analysis
Well said!
I agree - she had wanted that connection with Ivan earlier , when he was playing videogames
😭
Correct
Totally, he stole every scene he was in, incredible actor and the heart of the movie (scene wise and emotionally) like you said
i love igor 😭🤍
this movie is so layered 😢❤
I think that Igor genuinely liked Anora. For me the moment when he gave her the scarf to protect her from cold was an indicator that he actually cared about her. When she breaks down in the car, is a delayed emotional reaction to the whirlwind of events. Knowing that her Cinderella moment was all based on an illusion. Ivan was no Prince Charming.
Ivan was a wimp and a jerk. In real life she would have gotten pregnant from Ivan and had to raise the baby with Igor.
@biguy617 Or he would have died from an overdose, and she'd become riiiiiich af 😅🙈
The ending was gut wrenching and I think the very best it could have been. Finaly Anora's façade cracks and there is a human connection.
That's EXACTLY what I felt. There was some real emotion the character.
Then ending showed her true nature, you can't make a 304 into a house wife. looks like she would have cheated on that kid the first real argument.
@@theoutabodies5653I don’t see it that way, I think she was very thankful and her life has only teach her that way to show appreciation.
I thought the ending was sad. It seems like it said she would have to go back to her working job with different men. Her Cinderella life was over.
Igor and Anora are the two sides of the same coin. Both are used and abused in different ways. Hence the bond.
I agree and also Igor treated Anora better then Vanya did.
Love that you pointed this out
Yeah, i feel she broke down when he wanted to kiss her, but I don't think he gave her the ring for something in exchange.
I think Igor gave her the ring because he thought that way this poor woman would at least get something out of this whole roller coaster.
@@vik8860she got 10k too
I agree I think the kiss was what triggered her to withdrawal and pull away.

It was refreshing to see Russians or Armenians being shown as the regular humans they are not some over the top Russian villian from Hollywood
Yes. I've seen some backlash from idiots who claim that the actors are supporters of Putin and should be cancelled. Borisov even starred in an anti-regime movie in Russia which the Russian government wanted to ban. Most Russians and Armenians are regular people as well, just like anyone else.
for real
He gave her the ring as a way to help her.
she was giving every reason for igor to betray her but he never did 😢
What I really loved about this movie is that its not at all what I thought it would be.
Big shout out to Garnick who continued to work hard after suffering a concussion from Ani. 😂
She felt comfortable and safe enough to break down in front of Igor.
It was literally the only moment she had to reflect and break down. Being comfortable had nothing to do with it
@oJAYarista yes it did
@@oJAYaristait most definitely did
Loved your in depth analysis into the class aspect.
Oooh yesss
I FREAKING LOVE IGOR SO MUCH BROOOO SUCH A SWEETHEART THAT GENUINELY CARES FOR ANORA 😢
There was always something between them the whole time.
No lie the ending is what sold it for me😭 I love Anora and Igor so much

@@АлексейМальцев-л4уdude wtf do you write it under every anora video on youtube?
Obviously it has happened in the past.
It happens constantly.
Just watched it in the theater and I would definitely say this film is a masterpiece on every level. FIVE STAR film.
Yura Borisov did an amazing job ❤❤❤
I agree!
That film went balls deep on realization and I enjoyed every frame from this masterpiece. It has comedy, sex, anxiety-induced claustrophobia from Uncut Gems, and an ending that floored me that had me silent.
Anora is lucky asf to meet someone like Igor. Although very unwise it was clear Igor fell in love with her.
you nailed it right on the head...Anora breaks down when igor tries kiss her because Vanya ruined Men for her. I think Igor was being genuine when he tried to kiss her but now she has trust issues with all men, and that's why she broke down in the end.
Beautiful story, beautiful way to talk about it, thank you
She mentioned about why she doesn't kiss earlier in the film. Igor wanting to kiss her was a trigger.
Thought-provoking ending for sure. Mikey is an incredible actress and the new tops in tinsel town. She dominated this role.
7:51 i saw that igor wanted to kiss anora but she was pulling away, he didnt let go, so she hit him, and he still wouldnt let go, and then she broke down.
Yeah, to me it felt more like rape than an embrace
@@minionlover4576-bq8jkwoah woah woah 💀
@@minionlover4576-bq8jkthat’s what i thought too until he embraced her when she broke down
@@3rdARKnight counter point,
If your raping someone, they might break down crying
If the content of the scene was that she was being raped, of course she would break down, and an embrace might just be him forcing her to stay
I think I may rewatch soon just to analyze the scene more but also cause it’s a hella good film
I’m amused you watched this movie with your parents.
@@ChristosGreek eh, we've watched worse together. Nothing will beat the time I showed them Audition, though 🤣
At the end, she realized Cinderella is just a fairy tale.
In a cold world, he was the only one to show compassion for her. Everyone else was transactional and cruel
Great review ! I was tearing at the end 🥹
same it was very emotional
At least, she got a Dimond ring which cost about hundred thousand us dollars.
OK, she earns almost 140,000 us dollars in 3weeks .
She's for sure in a good spot eh
Igor was a genuine man and Anora admired that, but it just revealed all the trauma in that moment when he tried to kiss her. She isn’t used to love and connection, and it seemed her fling with Ivan was the tip of that iceberg, before it all came crashing down into reality.
I also thought it was a great representation of what comes up must come down. There’s always strings attached, especially with the extremely wealthy. If anything it made me appreciate a simpler life with real trust and connection more.
She felt the safest around him 😭😭💜💜
A pure masterpiece movie!!!
Toros wasn’t on the plane with them. But everything else yes
@@MsNatiBug on the second trip to Vegas he was. The whole family was there.
Anura means frog in Latin. So Anora is not Cinderella. She's the frog princess. 🤴 🐸
3:30 dude, HUGE MISTAKE. HE IS THE GODFATHER. NOT BECAUSE OF THE MONEY AT ALL, money and reputation.
Keep up the good work!
good review and spin on the ending ... saw it tonight great flick
That’s her way of showing gratitude. It’s the only way she knows. She feels sad because she realises that Igor wasn’t feeling anything with her way of saying “thanks”
Igor prove her that he doesn't want only her body ,actually he wants her soul . it was a perfect moment
that’s how movie endings should be. at least 2 possibilities and leaving it to us to decide.
Thanks!
I was so happy when she finally realized it wasn't worth it that she deserves the world over that
Anora's world was firmly rooted in money and sex - this was her normality.
You nailed it with your analysis - subscribed!
best ending scene in last decade 👌👍it' touch my soul
I completely agree with your assessment.
Anor = Pomegranate I believe they mentioned this purposely,
Pomegranate Theory - the fruit is hard to disassemble but those that do it for you without asking anything in return actually care about you.
Loved the analysis, great insights
I think Igor genuinely care about her, cuz throughout the film, he'd always showed compassion for her when everyone else was being mean and demoralizing towards her. It's not typical for someone who doesn't care or only want something in return to allow another person to open up and and become absolutely vulnerable while he comforts the person. From the start he understood her, he saw himself in her and he knew they're both a part of the system
Great job in this video!
she felt that was what she should do but also please dont glaze over her saying igor has grape eyes, when he wanted to kiss her and she resisted but he slightly insisted she went into fight or flight and began hitting him before finally breaking down and he just holds her because she has likely experienced grape before, her friends and her shared anecdotes about crazy men and it gets brushed off but hints at the dangers of her lifestyle. she tries to go through life at surface level and we never dig into who she is or was.
This movie had ne sitting in silence at the end. Great film. I think its way better than red rocket.
Just got see it TN n loved it, Sean B is a class act n certainly one of our most underrated directors.. can’t wait to see what his follow up may be.
BROOO I thought Igor was the Rich guy in disguise all along XD
I think she just had a crippling emotional release at the end there over everything she went through the last few days.
I also think it it was a complete mental break because in the end she has to return back to poverty, and is reminded that she’s back at the bottom of the totem pole of capitalism while that kid will spend $10,000 a day like it’s nothing.
Did people actually need explaination for that ending?
@CarlBeep I see your point. I guess $10,000 would be life changing money for some people especially someone who is as. marginalized as Anora.
While, as I watched her I was characterized by mixed feelings and desires, sexual lust, (the protagonist was so unbearably feminine and human) agony, tension, waiting for Igor's response, while there was something compulsive, I felt with the heartbreaking and so indescribably moving overthrow,
as if I was finished/exhausted inside me, and not outside me.
She breaks down after igor tries to kiss
She cracks and get to know igor doesn't want sex , he want even more human connection, and she is feeling that for the first time
I felt this moment captured what classical theatre does: defiance, but ultimate powerlessness in the face of fate (or in this case society, which is as good as any substitute).
The end scene, where she cried, is the first time the Ani facade was lifted and we finally saw Anora being vulnerable and real.
thanks. good review
You detach from your body and
Her being intimate with Igor was a way to thank him for the ring.
Really loved the movie
Same!
I love their conversation and you can picture out the reality. Sometimes we just need to wake up and not live with our delusions. The world is cruel. The judgements Anora have for Igor in the beginning and just realized in the end that she's wrong. A real connection.
A+ CAST
EVEN THE ARMENIAN BOSS GUY WAS SUPERB I THINK WHERE MANY MOVIE SCRIPTS LOSE IT IS THEY DONT MAKE THEIR ACTORS TALK LIKE NORMAL REGULAR PEOPLE
IM NGL THE ACTRESS HAD A FINE WHITE-GIRL BODY AND SHE DID WELL TO EXPOSE HERSELF (FIGURATIVELY INCLUDED) LIKE THAT-
THE ONLY CRITICISM I HAVE OF THE MOVIE IS THE MIDDLE PART WHERE, IN AN ENTIRE CITY, A GROUP OF 3 PPL TRY TO FIND 1 GUY AFTER LIKE 40 MINUTES OF THAT I WAS STARTING TO GO (ok this is getting dumb)
I THOUGHT I SAW THE PLOT UNTIL THE END COMING FROM A MILE AWAY BUT IT HAD SOME REALLY UNEXPECTED AND WELL-EXECUTED TWISTS AT THE END
ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES THIS YEAR IF NOT THE BEST!
I never understand why Sex Work is so looked down upon. Everyone is pretty much forced to work to survive, especially in the USA, where you for some reason don't care for social healthcare and all that, so if you don't have other opportunities, this might be the only way
Movies this days are weird
Agreed!
Fantastic analysis
I’m not a fan of the idea that ignore accepted sex from her and that’s why she was mad because he didn’t ask for it and she almost gives him no choice
Whatever man SB and everyone knocked it the f out of the park with this one.
I’m not a fan of the idea that ignore accepted sex from her and that’s why she was mad because he didn’t ask for it and she almost gives him no choice.
I'm curious, does anyone know how much the wedding ring can be sold off?
I saw someone sais around 120.000-140.000 k
I agree that she can't imagine him doing something nice for her without sex in exchange. Right before she breaks down, he touches her and she flinches. For me, that small moment is key: she doesn't intend to flinch, but she does. Igor may be acting nice right now, but he assaulted her just a couple of days earlier. Her body remembers this. She isn't the same anymore. And when she flinches, her body tells her that this isn't right, reminds her that she doesn't want this. And she simply shatters.
as a stripper I loved this movie
get a real job
Thx I was trying figure out the ending very powerful so Igor choking her was for her to stop because he did not want her to be intimate with her?
He was not choking her, he was trying to bring her face closer to kiss her
I dont know why everyone thinks he was choking her. His hand was on the back of her head because he was trying to pull her in for a kiss.
