    The Faraday cloth and photographic tripod mounts are excellent design features. Thanks for the video and your time to make this excellent series.

    Great introductory video for this!
    As for Tracking app recommendations: I recommend just using SatDump itself. If you use SatDump for tracking, live processing, and/or recording all at once, you don’t need to look between multiple devices. Everything fits on one screen.
    Also, as others have said, that dish probably isn’t be best. I use the NooElec GOES dish for HRPT. It’s also not perfect because it has a linear feed, not a circular one - but I can still pull in HRPT signals with a SNR around 14-15 dB.
    In the end, though, all pre-built dishes at this time (that I’m aware of) are a bit of a trade-off without modification.

    FYI, SatDump can decode, track, AND record the signal at the same time. Just make sure you have a decent computer or even phone/tablet as it's available in Android 😉

    Brought the helical feed 1698MHz only from eBay a week ago and put it on a 1meter dish totally happy with it have read good things about the faraday cloth dish. Going to treat myself to the S band version with a Nooelec Ham It Down next

    The faraday cloth "dish" looks too flat to focus on the helix to me. Perhaps it's deliberately not focusing too sharply so it doesn't need to be pointed too accurately?

  • @patchvonbraun
    @patchvonbraun 3 месяца назад +5

    That "dish" is nonsense. Almost the *entirety* of any antenna gain seen is from the helical feed. The only the the flat reflecor is doing for you here is flipping the chirality as seen by the feed. Wind the helix in the other sense, and point it directly at the satellite and you'll get as good or better. It's NOT a "parabolic dish". Not even slightly. The work put into this "dish" could just as well have been put into making a proper parabolic shape. But, you know, don't trust me. I've only been involved in radio instrumentation design since the 1980s, and run a radio astronomy observatory. What do I know?

      @TechMindsOfficial  3 месяца назад +2

      @R1chae I didn’t make the dish, and that’s the description from the seller. It’s not entirely flat, maybe that doesn’t show too well on video. Not as deep as a sat dish for sure, but it’s not flat. Cheers :)

    • @R1chae
      @R1chae 3 месяца назад

      @@TechMindsOfficial oh I indeed didn't notice that it isn't entirely flat. it actually looks slightly conical at about 1:43 but as this gets worse signal than a 60cm tv satellite dish, I highly doubt that this reflector is even nearly the right shape to focus rf in this frequency range and personally I would still change the title to be more accurate than the listing. You could put it under quotes maybe, that sounds fun
