My uncle had a friend who was a tradesman, in the 1980s he told my Uncle in a bar in Inverness, that whilst installing electric lights, he saw a man, dressed in period highland dress walk across the floor of the ballroom and disappear through the opposite wall, he said he was solid as a real person, but looked filthy and wet. My uncles friend, despite what some people say, was absolutely terrified, and would not work there alone whilst the job was ongoing.
Was that in Inverness? I've just been writing about soms stories from there.
But he did continue to work there. That's a brave man

Before I knew the story of the massacre I climbed up a bit from the roadside to take in the view of the glen. I was on my own and visiting from Australia. I felt an incredible sense of peace but also profound sadness as I sat there. When I started to walk back down maybe an hour later, I heard bagpipes. They weren’t loud but the sound was sort of carried on the wind and almost floated around me. It was subtle but there was no mistaking it. I was the only person there and the only car parked on the roadside. I now know for sure I wasn’t dreaming. What a gift and a blessing to hear the piper 🙏🏽✨🙏🏽

Betrayal is always a crime.
One of my school friends ( since passed ) used to pitch a tent in the summertime, deep into Glencoe every year and camp there a couple of days. He told me you could almost hear screams coming from the area.
Even just driving along the road through Glencoe its very atmospheric and has always had an eerie feel to it esp., if you park up anywhere and step out your car. Glencoe is a very sad part of Scotland which you can feel in the air.

When i was a child, before i even knew about the massacre of the Mcdonalds, we were camping out in glencoe, just me, my sister, and our dad. It was a warm February that year, and we stayed in a really beautiful area with a stream close by. I still remember the sound it made as it flowed beside our tent. On our second night, I was woken up to the call of nature, and I unzipped my tent. I was suddenly very afraid because it was pitch black outside. The dark never really bothered me as a kid, but there was something about the eery quiet that came with it that really disturbed me. I shot out with my torch and quickly found a spot. I remember I started hearing bagpipes, it was soft like an echo as it it was far away but close by at the same time. My first thought was that some people camping nearby us was having a small ceilidh. But there was something about these bagpipes that sounded very off. Like I was listening to an echo bent through time. It was tired, and the song had no structure or repeated rhythm. It was very, very haunting. I finished my business and hurried back to my tent, and that was when I saw it. The spectre of a piper playing invisible pipes. He floated down the stream like he was standing on an invisible boat. Behind him, there were more spectres in line. They were wearing shredded kilts and bonnets. Theyre faces where sarrow, gaunt and expressionless. I was frozen to the spot. I just remember dropping my flashlight. They floated down the stream and eventually faded into the night. The word "betrayed" whipered behind them over and over again. I ran for my dads tent, and I was so afraid at what I saw. My dad came out, and I told him what I just saw. He took me into his tent and held me until I calmed down.
I remember the next morning, dad asked me to repeat everything I saw. I told him about the piper and the procession of men behind him, and I described how they looked to every detail I could remember. About their shredded dirty kilts, the large buckles around their bodies and thick coats. They were tall and robust, with their bonnets and whispy hair. And the word "betrayed" whispered on the wind, repeated over and over again. Dad went white. His mother was born in Inverness, and her maiden name was Mcdonald. Dad told me the story about the massacre from the clan Campbell, and what I saw was their probably the ghosts of the Mcdonald clan, haunting their former land.
That memory has stayed with me all my life. I've never seen a ghost since. But i will never forget the haunting feeling I felt that night. And never do I want to encounter another ghost again for as long as i live!!!

Why? You are kin to the MacDonald clan. So it's pretty safe to say these ghosts would regard you as part of the clan, and would not harm you. So why be scared of meeting them again in such a manner and place?
As I see it, being a Swede and living in Scotland (22 years and counting), I'm lucky having the best of this world, Scandinavian and Scottish....
I've visited Glencoe once, the weather was perfect, no clear blue skies or anything like that, but low clouds, misty, cold, a wee bit of wind....the thought of it still gives me the chills!
When my number is up, bury my heart in Scotland and my bones in Sweden....

I know exactly what you mean. I'm an Australian who moved to the UK in 1997. After 9 very unhappy months in England, I moved to Glasgow, where I had a couple friends. As I crossed the border & the road swung left, I caught the sunset through the Border Hills. It felt like Scotland was reaching out to say "Welcome, daughter". I moved into a flat with two people I'd never met, who immediately pulled me into their groups of friends. So I too have two homes. There is a wonderful song by Vicka & Linda Bull "Between two Shores" that sums it up well. Outside of Glasgow, Glencoe is my favourite place in Scotland. Although I currently live in Germany, whenever I visit home, I feel happier just breathing the air. I love Australia & miss my family & friends there, but I long for Scotland. So bury my heart there too.
I know someone who, decades ago, had an experience in Glencoe while camping overnight with friends. A fierce storm with lashing rain and strong winds developed overnight forcing them to abandon their tents and run back to the spot where they had parked their van. Throughout this though, they could hear screams, shouts and the clash of something metallic (swords maybe?) They couldn't see anyone but they could hear what sounded like people rushing towards them and described feeling something akin to an electric feeling whenever they heard and felt the 'people' running past them Apparently, the entire group had the experience, not just one individual. Also, the van's headlights turned on of their own accord during this incident. Unsure if the place they had chosen to camp happened to be near the site of the massacre but it was definitely in Glencoe. I've often wondered if they experienced the massacre itself, its aftermath or some other conflict?
Wow! That sounds like some of the accounts that have been reported although clashing swords sounds like it may be from an earlier era, unless its swords clashing with bayonets (The Red Coats would have fought with muskets i believe). That is fascinating, thank you for sharing.

@@eerieedinburghmy initial thought was that the metallic sounds could have been claymores but I don't know anything about the types of weaponry that would have been used at that time
Most clans used swords /Claymores for defence and offence while at home or travelling in the Highlands .
Your mention of the "lone piper" reminded me of a story my old flatmate came back with. He was somewhere in the Highlands, staying in a remote bothy for a couple of days. On the first evening he walked down to watch the sunset over the loch. After a while he heard the spooky sound of a lone piper... Certain he had heard a ghostly lament without getting spooked, he went to his bed.
The next night, he decided to walk the few kms to the closest pub. All the locals are around the bar having a good blether. John was (of course) welcomed & joined in.
At some point, he told of his spooky encounter by the loch.
"Och, that'll 've bin oor Angus.", one of the wee wifeys in the bar said. "He aye gaes doon tae the loch tae practice his pipes. Tis tae damn noisy in t'hoose!"

Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe and covers the grave O'Donald, and cruel was the foe that r@ped Glencoe and murdered the house of MacDonald. Brilliant song by the corries. Thanks for this vid xx

Back in the seventies , when I was still a teenager , traveling through this area on family holidays ( fishing holidays because my late father was a keen salmon fisher ) This area always had a really oppressive feeling 😢 Thank You for another excellent video . I still remember the original abandoned road and bridge .

A night of betrayal and horrors as that of Glencoe... and why would some these souls not still be there? I'm not even Scottish, never been at the site and still the story touched me deeply when I first heard it and still does so today, decades later.

I climbed up into the Great Glen at GlenCoe on my first visit to Scotland. There was absolute silence, not a bird sang, the mist was rolling down the side of the mountains and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. There are ghosts up there for sure !
My late mum was from Glasgow,she was clan Houston. I've always loved the people and the Highlands and hopefully will end my days there. Thank you for your great tales of a great and proud people.

I am a yank, with Scotch Irish ancestry and I have heard the mournful cries of the banshee before a loved one dies. My maternal grandmother and mother also used to hear the crying woman.

This was a woman crying and moaning. We know that cats, coyotes, and foxes make odd sounds that sound like a woman screaming or crying. But this sound was different.
I will add that my sister in law had seen a woman in white walking through the yard before her ex boyfriend's dad died.

I'm from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Our area is populated by the descendants of Highland Scots who have preserved a great deal of the culture here because it was a more isolated area back in the day. I'm descended from the Clanranald MacDonalds as are many local people here. My direct ancestor -- Donald Ban MacDonald was at Culloden as a lad and survived of course. His family came to Nova Scotia in 1790. Another ancestor was a MacDonald woman from Glencoe. I live in Inverness County and there is a rural area nearby named Glencoe -- full of MacDonalds. I've been to Culloden and Glencoe several times and planning a trip with family this year again. My grandmother who had Gaelic as her first language could recite her family tree -- almost all MacDonald -- and she could state in Gaelic --referring to the massacre of Glencoe -- 'as long as there's green in the forest, there's a crook in the Campbells'. The betrayal of 1692 was not forgotten on this side of the Atlantic!
I love driving through Glencoe, but take care to only do so during full daylight and not in the early part of the year.

When I knew I was going to join with friends for a driving tour of Scotland, one of my goals was to visit Glencoe, having heard the song prior. When my one friend decided to join me, instead of going with the others in the group who took the boat tour of Loch Ness, it was a drizzly day. As we walked the trail from the visitors center to the memorial of destroyed homes, it suddenly stopped drizzling as we neared the broken walls. Also, to my amazement, as we turned to go back to the visitor's center, we were suddenly aware that the main road was not far off, yet we heard no sounds of cars while standing at the destruction. Also, as soon as we returned to the trail, it started to drizzle again. Eerie, but not threatening. It was almost as if we had been protected, & cocooned. As we reached the main road, I had my friend stop the car, & I turned around and snapped a photo, which I had enlarged & framed. It now graces my front hallway. My own tribute to the peace that now surrounds that tragedy.
A long story short. I’m clan Fraser and many years ago when I was in the scouts , we hiked over Rannoch moor in bright sunshine , I’d have been fourteen maybe fifteen . I swear to this day I could hear whispering in my ear. Very strange.
The Moor is one of my favourite places, love it. I often think about how many people must have lost their lives there.
My husband's family are from Glasgow, but hes walked through Glencoe, he says its beautifully haunting 😢. I so look forward to these tales, you are one of my favourite channels ❤️

On a visit to Inveraray with friends, my uncle absolutely refused to enter the castle and waited outside till they completed the tour and came outside. Inveraray Castle is the Seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of Clan Campbell. Ill feeling still runs high in McDonald circles.

At my first stay in Scotland I visited Glencoe. I found a book about the massacre and heard about it from our tour guide. I was...horrified that I never heard about it before and also horrified by the thought of people treated as guests commiting such a cruel deed.I am a stranger, but there is a clear feeling of sadness all over the place. Like it is missing the people who lived there happily back then.

I'm 1/2 Scottish 1/2 Irish, my grandmother would tell me stories when I was a wee bairn, it was hard to understand but I loved it.

I'm a PhD in Scottish history. In 1692 there was no 'British' govt, it was the ENGLISH who ordered the Glencoe massacre. I have an entire chapter on it in my doctoral thesis because the subject of my thesis was Lord John Murray, 1st duke of Atholl. He led the inquiry into the massacre.

I know the story from my family from my family who were allies of the MACDonald clan as in our history it was a MacDonald who aided our Prince Charlie and it was a Campbell who betrayed us ! My family on my moms maternal side is scottish (last name McCallum) there are tales in my family of a wailing lady that warns our family of deaths soon to come. I have never witnessed it, but my great grandma always told me about that.

Just a few days after seeing this video, i read a book set in 1750 where one of the character says he doesn't know where he is but think he may be in glencoe where the massacre took place. So i could picture what kind of landscape he went trough according to the images in this video.
The Massacre of Glencoe was maybe sung by the Corries but they never wrote it , that accolade goes to Alistair Mac Donald as far as I know. Brilliant content from EE as usual thanks

I'd always thought it was the Corries, although my mum used to play us Alistair MacDonald whenever we went to Pitlochry, so familiar with that version also, but still thought it was The Corries. Turns out it was written by a chap called Jim McLean! Did not know that and now i have to go check him out 👏🏻

A lot of the survivors were taken in by other branches of the MacDonald clan and were welcome to stay as long as they wished or until the weather improved to travel again .
Certainly like the illustrations. "They came from Fort William with murther in mind, the Campbell had orders Dutch Billy had signed......" I used to have a friend named Darroch, who came from up Skye way. She told me of an old Highland saying - "Wherever ye find dirty English government money - there ye'll always find a bloody Campbell......" Old memories live long.
I've never heard that saying or that version of the song! My grandmothers side are MacDonalds and she shared the same sentiment.

The pub around there has a sign “No hawkers or Campbells”, it’s a strange brooding place Glencoe, even on the hottest Summer days it’s chilly. Definitely haunted by that terrible crime.

The murder of the McDonalds by supporters of the Burger King is a day that will live in infamy for eternity. Despite my joke at the beginning of this post, it was a truly horiffic and cowardly betrayal by people who had been invited in a guests of the McDs during atrocious weather conditions, as is said in that wonderful song by the Corries, a band which have an awesome sound and style much missed! If there is ever a group of people likely to remain as ghosts, the McDonalds are high on the list of likely candidates!

There is a whispering stone in Glencoe and a Campbell soldier who felt guilty about breaking Highland hospitality told what they had been ordered to do and some of the MacDonald clan members heard and warned the Chieftain and some of the MacDonald clan members were prepared for the attack on the 13th of February 1662 ,this Campbell soldier saved some Macdonals from dying that night . That's how so many clansmen were saved as they hid in caves in the hills .

As far as I am aware, the King (Charles II) made changes to the Presbyterian/Protestant way of worship in Scotland (Book of Common Prayer). The Presbyterians saw this as the King putting himself "above" God and refused to accept this, as they saw God as the head of the church. Orders were given to force this on these people and "The Killing Time" ensued. Ministers were thrown out their churches with compliant ministers put in their place. Congregation lists were then given to these ministers and folk were rounded up to be punished if they were not at church. You could be shot for carrying a bible. Presbyterians were forced to hold secret "open air" services and if caught could be shot, hanged or imprisoned. It goes on and on. This ended with the ascendency of William and Mary to the throne. Two of the worst offenders - General Tam Dalyell of the Binns and Captain John Graham of Claverhouse. Such a terrible shame to put people against people. 😢
