All of the teaching of the dancing, and choreography, is done by the students themselves. No adults involved other than the music teacher who gathers them in one room for group practice. The rest of the time, the seniors ("3rd graders") do all of the work, making it all happen. Only in Japan!

I discovered Kyoto Tachibana SHS by chance on youtube six months ago. Since then, this music with the fantastic girls has never let me go. I have read everything that I could find on the net so far and I listen to at least three hours of music from KT EVERY DAY. It's like an addiction. Everything fits together in a perfection that I have never seen or heard before. My tip, I do it exactly like this: I sit very close in front of my 55 inch smart TV with headphones on. Connected with a cable, not with bluetooth, because bluetooth always creates a slight delay between the picture and the music. And because of the big picture and the good stereo sound, I feel like I'm at the event. It fascinates me and I can't get away from it. Greetings from Bavaria in Germany.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, instant thumbs up from me as I was the one that recommended it and was so happy to see you reacting to it. I remembered you saying you were in Japan, I didn't know you were so close to Kyoto or that you worked in a high school when I recommended it, but even more glad I did now. I love DCI and watch the performances on RUclips a lot, and happened to see this band in the Rose Parade and instantly fell in love with them. Seeing your reactions to DCI videos, I knew you would enjoy this as well. As one of the comments said, I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see them in person, the amount of energy they give off and those big beautiful smiles they always have would melt even the meanest of people's hearts. When ever you feel down and need a pick-me-up, this band will surely do the trick. There are a bunch of videos on RUclips showing their practices and they do put in a LOT of time practicing like all school clubs in Japan do. Thank you SOOOOO much for doing this, it's now my favorite reaction video that you've done. I look forward to your next video, and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Hey I know I'm late, but you should see their 2018 Rose parade march in Pasadena, California. There are man, many videos and compilations on RUclips of this one event, varying in quality, because this was possibly their most incredible performance. It's a 5.5 mile (8km) long march and these incredible band members knocked it out of the park that year. they attend every 2 - 3 years. They played and danced the entire way with only brief intermissions between songs. "Sing sing sing" is their most famous song, and pretty much their unofficial theme song and dance. There are videos of them performing the same song and dance dating back as far as 2012 on RUclips - and the high school has rotated many, many students since then. Each year you see them perform, there are always new students - but they practice towards perfection. i first saw their 2012 Disneyland performance that year and have been following their performances ever since. Such incredible talent and joy and passion these students have in what they do.

Please view some of the other Kyoto Tachibana SHS videos, competitions, not just street marching. There are hundreds on the web. There are few boys in the band due to the boys choosing baseball and soccer to play in high school. The band members practice four hours per day and eight hours on Saturday and Sunday besides their full class workload. To me, they are the top high school band in the world.

@@Ian-Cognito I've watched a number of them, and one of the things that really truly amazes me is their prescience when it comes to use of space -- for each performance, they know how many members to put into rows -- whether it's a street, or a stadium, they know how to create the best effect. The Rose Bowl parade was on 4-lane California streets, while parades in Japan they've done on one side of a local Japanese street.

    • @sgardner4313

I suspect they got the idea for slapping hands with bystanders while they were in America. It's not a particularly Japanese thing to do. I was actually really excited to see their Rose Bowl performance because Japanese and Asian audiences usually have a "polite appreciation" reaction while Americans tend towards more effusive outward expression, and I really wanted them to have that experience.

Tachibgana is the name of a wild orange tree which is the ancestor of modern mandarin oranges, so the yellow and orange is appropriate, but they also have blue and gold uniforms, a blue and white uniform which is used once a year, and in hot weather they sometimes wear T shirts and warmup pants.
They were in Disneyland as part of their 3028 Rose Bowl Trip. THere are lots of videos of them in the ROse Parade. The longest ones take from an hour and 5 minutes to and hour and almost 39 minutes. One of them contains a post parade interview in Japanese with the one legged flutist, who looks like she just came back from a walk around the block.
Ialso recommend ruclips.net/video/FFcSbz7iH0M/видео.html It starts out with a street parade of which they do a lot, but then moves to the finals of the 2015 All Japan National Marching Band Competition. The one legged flautist is in this as a freshman and was a senior in the 2017-2018 Rose Tournament events. The Sing Sing Sing finale is far more intense than at Disneyland, They won Gold for a nearly perfect performance/
Oh yes, you will see jumping. On the first jumps, the one legged flautist is a kneeler, in the second jump, she is a jumper!

Courtney, the Rose Parade is held every new year day in Pasadena!
The Japanese are always invited to send a school band to take part in the Bandfest competition, which on most occasions they win and then they take part in the actual parade of 6 miles mesmerising the crowds with an incredible song book and choreography and after that they will hold a charity concert to raise money for people affected in global disasters. You need to look on the internet for the Japanese High School Band’s, which Tachibana has won on a few occasions and to win that Gold prize is really really hard as the standard from all is extremely high. If you live down the road, you go and visit and witness them rehearsing ( you lucky thing ),as you said they totally dedicated to the band and it’s the senior members who work with the new joiners to put them through and encourage them to meet the standards needed to become a band member ( normally about 150-200 in the band). you just watched the best band in the world, but what you watched is nothing of what this band Tachibana does, they really do everything that has to do with music and dance, and everything so perfect that other bands can't manage to imitate them just a little, but you should definitely recognize the perfect when you stay in Japan, Japan is the country where I think perfection was invented, and then they are great people, kindly respectful and always friendly ..
These girls and those few boys go to school 7 days a week, I have been told, they have a very heavy program according to reports that they have to do every day ...
You notice that I am a big fan, that happened quite a few years ago, I read and watched everything about Japan, is so beautiful country and culture that I was really in love with Japan, until one day I once Tachibana came by, i was really sold, i didn't know what i saw, while i was a rock music man, but today i look more at tachibana than rock music

I'm not sure about best band in the world, as that would depend on what you value. If it's precision marching or sound quality, there probably is better. However, for pure entertainment, this band is hard to beat. Check out their other videos including those of stage shows and marching contests. They absolutely killed it at the 2018 Rose Parade, no other band got the cheers they did. I've been a Tachibanaholic since watching one of their videos about 18 months ago. Watching them perform live is on my bucket list for sure.

Darrel Natori, Tachibana’s main goal is to entertain people and bring them smiles and happiness. In that department, no band in the world even comes close to them.
Of course, Tachibana are still extremely talented musically and they are like pro athletes and dancers. Again, in that department no one even comes close to them.
If you weigh on the overall package of a marching band, I can’t even think of any band, and I’ve watched a lot of them, that’s even near Tachibana’s level, let alone besting them.

Plus you get to see them honoring a special student in the band that was born with only one leg. She wears a prosthetic leg and this was her last year as she was a senior that year. She had performed with the group her entire high school career. The funny thing is if you don't look carefully you would never know she had a prosthetic leg, she moves and dances so naturally.

A bit of a mix up. The 2018 was the second time Tachibana was in the Rose Parade. The first time was in 2012, after the city of Sendai was almost wiped out in the tsunami. Sendai is quite a distance from Kyoto. Tachibana was not directly affected, but the announcer at the 2011 Pasadena Bandfest that had a fire at the school that wiped out part of the music area taking out some instruments music and uniforms.

Marching, I hasten to add, over five and a half miles at the Rose Parade. If you watch the whole parade in 2018 you'll see other bands pretty much wilt into a decline long before the end of the gruelling march. The Tachibana, however, kept tthe spring in their step and the smile on their faces to the very end. It is little wonder that they were by far the crowd favourite for the whole parade that year.

Those band members spend about 38 hours a week training and practicing. No teachers are involved except for administrative, mentoring tasks. Courtney, you would be familiar with the senpai-kohai dynamic among the seniors, juniors and freshmen at high schools in Japan, so that would easily translate to the work ethic of these kids. To find out more, there's a lively discussion at the KT unofficial fan blog, where one of the contributors hosted some of the students from KT back in 2017-2018 for the Rose Parade, and again this year when some of them returned as part of the composite "All Japan" Honor band.
Note that one of the students playing the flute, a senior at that time, has a prosthetic leg, but was determined to be part of the band, successfully performed the entire routine, and the 5.5 miles (about 9km) of the RP. Oh yeah, she returned again this year to repeat the whole thing with the composite band.

As a dancer, for a 200 member dance team to dance and be all in sync like Tachibana dancing is an exhausting, incredible, and amazing feat in itself. But to do that, and at the same time, also be able to play a musical instrument well and perfectly in tune with each other is beyond amazing.
And to be able to do all of that for two and a half hours covering 5.5 miles or nearly 9 kilometers is just unbelievably insane. And not to mention the fact that while doing all of that, Tachibana are still able to smile and and exude joy and happiness to the crowd throughout the trek...it’s hard to believe that they’re even human.

They practice every single day of the year, they do not have holidays, they do not have Christmas, New Year off or anything like we would in the UK. It is my understanding that they have to be proficient on 2 instruments, and obviously have the ability to remember all the routines and they must be extremely fit to do all that marching, dance moves and playing their instruments i mean there are videos over 1.75 hours and they do not stop, I agree they are the best marching band in the world at this level.

Sorry, no, they were there in 2012 and surprising back again in 2018 but they have to take it in turn. The Rose Parade Japanese Band band for 2019 and 2020 was a composite band from a region. It is very hard for one school to provide the numbers, they pay for just about everything themselves and in 2018 there were around 200 of them including support staff so it was a very big undertaking. Every 3 or 4 years they do a school visit to a district in Hawaii too.

The corporate overlords at Di$ney-corp required all these students to pay full-fare for the day. No free lunches. A contributor to the fan blog hosted some of the girls then has given a good account of their visit, and the insane amount of training and practicing behind their amazing performances.

You should have watch their complete Rose Bowl Parade performance. I don't know how any of them were left standing afterwards. With their marching and dancing for the 1 hour long parade. I was tired from watching them.

There may have been more than one fan to recommend Kyoto Tachinbana to you -- I know that I did. Whenever I am creatively stuck, I watch one of their many videos. They always make me smile.
By the way, those "big things" are called "sousaphones," after the March King John Philip Sousa, who composed the Stars and Stripes Forever. They're essentially tubas designed to be carried. The Tachibana examples are made out of fiberglass instead of brass to save weight.

the big white instrument is the Sousa Phone named after John Philips Sousa an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for American military marches. He is known as "The March King" or the "American March King", to distinguish him from his British counterpart Kenneth J. Alford who is also known as "The March King"

Those Sousaphones are fiberglass - makes them lighter but no easier to play. All the kids in the band audiition. Band is not a required course. The kids have to audition and the audition is run by the students themselves. They practice in the evening after they have done any retired classwork.

The first version of the Sousaphone came out in 1893, it was called 'the rain catcher' because the horn opening was directed straight up. A couple of years later the design was adapted to allow the horn to be angled forward over the player's head.
The Sousaphone is a redevelopment of the Tuba with marching and standing band performances in mind.
Some bands still use the Tuba, and seeing a HUGE Tuba delicately balanced on the shoulder of a band member as he marches along, for the first time, is shocking. It's still an eye-opener when seeing it for the umpteenth time.

The history of this band is fascinating and inspiring. I´m adding 4 links below that will tell you a lot about this school and the band and how this style of marching started. These videos follow the band and students during the years of 2011 and 2012. Each is about 15 minutes long and start with a bit of history some of which is repeated from 1 video to another but they each give information about the school, when the band was started and when the dance was introduced (by one of the students) into their performance and how hard they work to accomplish something that would seem, by many, to be impossible.
This will give you an idea of just how talented these young people are (ages 15 to 17) and how the teachers allow the student´s creativity to improve the band and what the level of desire and willingness to work to learn and achieve their dreams.
