Glad the Coast Guard finally spent some coin and built a facility to train the best damm rescue swimmers in the world. When I went through AM School "Tinbender" (1988) it was bear bones water time, the ASM's - Aviation Survivalmen deserved better, glad they finally got it. Semper Paratus Clay Ritchie AM(t) USCG (Ret)
Interestingly, I never actually deployed any swimmers on ANY of the SAR cases I flew on. I went to AM school 7 years prior. They did take up space in the 65's though...did not have them while flying in H3's or 52's.
Frank Fazio I don't quite understand your question but no medical training takes place at the 6 month A-school. The medical training takes place at later C-schools once you actually make it in to the rate.
Frank Fazio you would still have to go through EMT school I suppose. For paramedics you are allowed to keep your certification but it is up to you to do all the work outside of the coast guard. Coast Guard only keeps up EMT-B and depending on the unit maybe intermediate.
Great Video!!! I want to be an AST What do you think would be the best place for my first assignment as a non-rate waiting to get into A-school?Thank you
***** its ok, and I'm not a sir. I'm enlisted. Only officers and warrant officers are Sirs. E-number refers to the enlisted pay grade. Pretty much your level in the military enlisted hierarchy.
Cole Johnson Cole, may I email you with questions? I am planning on joining as soon as I get my AA. I am working with a swim instructor this coming thursday. Thank you and congratulations.
Success is not a station, is a journey
thanks for this upload, this video is a huge inspiration for me. I'll be in AST school within 4 months. Hoorah

How hard is AST A School, and do you also have any advice.
A lot of hard work shown in this video. Awesome! What's the age of the oldest folks going in to AST-A school?
Piero Ibanez mid to late 20s
Really interested and want to start training ahead of time, any information from you would be amazing!:)
If I’m a certified paramedic would that be helpful if I made it into C - School

Cole Johnson ok thanks, I rephrased the question above

Do you get a say in where you're stationed?
Analogmp3 for the most part, yes. depends on what is available at the time you're transferring but they're pretty good about working with you.

+ZacharyHawkstone it's an e1-e3 that doesn't have a specialty. at E4 you get rated and have your specific job.

+ZacharyHawkstone That's correct. being an AST is only available to enlisted.
