I came across one of these lenses recently, a plain non-XR non-P version. I tested it on my Sony A7II and was stunned when it turned in results that met or exceeded the very best 50mm lenses I’ve tested so far. So when I started searching online, it appears others have made this same discovery before me. These Ricoh 50mm f2 lenses are apparently WAY better than they have any right to be. As for Summicron comparisons I can’t say, but what I can say is it meets or exceeds the very best from Pentax, Minolta and Nikon. And that alone is praise enough.
Amazing that the Rikenon is better at f8 than BOTH a Pentax M AND a Minolta MD, both of those lenses have very good reputations. I'm guessing this Rikenon XR was probably produced by Tomioka but I doubt anybody really knows. Thanks!
I heard that rikenon lenses were great for their price. I never knew that this lens was said to rival the Summicron. This lens has some great contrast and sharpness. I will have to pick one up. Great video!
Hi, thanks for watching. I wasn't aware that these lenses were any good. But it all got very interesting when I put some Japanese website's through Google translate :)
@@ohjajohh I mostly heard about Rikenon lenses being great from the positive reviews on RUclips for the Auto Sears (Rikenon) 55mm f/1.4. It seems that Ricoh rebranded lots of their Rikenon lenses and cameras under the "auto sears" names. Also I have read that there are rumors that some of the early Rikenon lenses were also manufactured by Tomioko the same manufacturer that produced Zeiss lenses and the cult classic Tomioka 55mm f1.2.
@@ohjajohh Turns out I have one of these but it’s the “P” version rather than the “XR” version. Not sure what that means. Guess I’ll have to try it out. Not sure it’s ever been on my camera. :)
@@timskinnercanada Cool! As this is my first ever Rikenon lens I also have no clue about the difference between "XR" and "P" but it's worth a try for sure
@@ohjajohh It does appear to have the same distinctive point light flares. Sort of an anamorphic vibe. Thanks for prompting me to dig out the mysterious big old box of fifties. :)
In 2019 I bought Ricoh XR 7 with Rikenon XR 50 f2.0. I sold it because my pentax smc m 50mm f.1.4 have better image quality and far better build quality (is awesome made). I read that Rikenon XR 55 mm f1.2 is better that Pentax 50mm 1.2 but I don't test it yet.
I bought a rikenon 50mm F2, not the XR version.I love the color, and I love vintages not for sharpness but for the dreamy bokeh and color rendering. It is 30 usd, and one of my best favorites ever, rivals even with Zeiss and Voitglander albeit with cheaper price.
Sorry I'm a bit late catching up with this one ohjajohh - as always, a really good video, and very interesting to see how differently the Ricoh lens performs in mid aperture ranges - like you, I probably prefer the others wide open, but around the f8 mark the Ricoh lens seems way better. Weirdly enough, in the early 80s I bought a Ricoh XR-X with a 50mm kit lens attached.....that I immediately replaced with something like a 24 - 70 or thereabouts! Not sure if my 50mm will be the same as yours, but I still have it, so I'll dig it out and have a look when I get the chance.
Hi Tim, you don't have to be sorry for watching a video late :) It would be interesting to see which lens was on your old Ricoh camera and how it performs. As this lens only shines stopped down, I will use it only for timelampses and landscape photography. For every other purpose I prefer different lenses.
@@ohjajohh Yeah, I do remember digging my Ricoh lens out a few years ago (I never put it on a camera at that time) and thinking that it didn't have that lovely silky feel of the older, all metal lenses, that I'm now so used to using. I keep a Chinon 28mm f2.8 on one of my Lumix cameras as the default lens and it just feels perfect - and for video it produces a great image too.
For 11$ its superb. It is a weird lens though. It seems that coatings are not superb so against the sun it loses contrast. But in other situations it was probably better than the Pentax. And the sunstars effect (city lights) was nice.
Thanks for watching. In some situations this lens performs outsanding, and in other situations it performs badly. Overall it's a nice lens to have, but I wouldn't pick it as my daily lens.
Thank you very much for your great presentation. I agree it is sharper than most fifty mmyesh of that era, but it definitely is not a Submicron and should not be. This is not even the first-rate lens of Ricoh, being f2. And it has always cost a fraction of the price of a Summicron.
This is an amazing video 👍👍I can't wait to watch more, keep them coming😍😍I am glad to join your channel👉🎁🤝😊See you soon my friend🙏Stay in touch🤗🤗Love from #foodcazt, Berlin

Thanks for watching, stopped down the Rikenon is really impressive indeed
For my opinion too the Rikenon was made by Tomioka.
I use the XR Rikenon 50mm f2 on Pentax ME, MEsuper or on Pentax Program A.
Wonderful lens 👍
Great research and review regarding these lens 😃 Enjoy your day and keep up the good work
I used to do photography when I was younger.

Manufacturers: Ricoh, Canon, Pentax
I'm now a GoPro😅😅

Excellent and thorough comparison. I agree entirely with your conclusions. I really love the Rikenon’s star flares in the night shots. So clean.
Thanks, the star flares are quite nice indeed. I think this lens would also be perfect for time-lapse movies at night

Interesting, I didn't even know Rikenon had made an f1.2 lens. I just looked it up, but it's a bit too pricey for me 😅
