I've watched a few of your videos on strides in the past and I think this one is by far the best you've done, it really gives a good sense of how to go about running them.
Thank you for making this video Jason. As a coach to many distance athletes (from 5km to ultra marathon), I prescribe strides to all of my athletes. They are the bread and butter of endurance training.
@@dbo4506 negative how? Strides improve your running speed at all paces. Yes mileage is very important but strides develop an athlete's coordination, technique and running economy. There is such a thing as too much mileage. Strides make you way more efficient.
I am so sad, my Garmin coach thing told me to do strides and I probably did 4 of these workouts and felt like death. I hated them so much that I would keep rescheduling my workouts. After watching this video I now know that I was doing sprints not strides… I wish I had seen this earlier…
Thanks for this video. I learned that I've probably been doing my strides a bit too hard. Will keep it more at one mile pace top speed for my distance goals.
Im new to taking running seriously, learning how to train. However, oh my word loads of terminology is thrown around like everyone should know what it is/means/looks like. no idea what a stride was and internet articles are filled with filler and dont really explain it, with poor examples. This video is great, straight to the point, see you doing them, explains it well, has advice. perfect. great job
This video is super helpful! Thanks! I think I've been running my strides to fast, which is probably why I avoid them after most runs. It's a bit difficult to gauge your effort without seeing your legs, but I'm pretty sure I've been sprinting my strides at 400m pace, which seems crazy now that I've watched this.
Good video. I've been doing them, but making them harder than they have to be. Have them planned for tomorrow and will change it up. Thanks for the video.
Strides have always intrigued me... I was a sprinter in HS (some 20 years ago) but when I think of doing strides, I think of running up to my 100m sprinting speed which is quite fast for most runners. Probably too fast even for strides. As you mentioned, strides should be up to about your 1 mile pace. Great domo Jason!
He says you should be around 95% of your top speed... But my mile pace is like 4.2 m/s (not great) while I can easily reach 10 m/s in a sprint. I guess I'll simply try to reach my 800m pace in the 1st stride and 400m in the remaining ones.
@@nivaldolemos5280 It's still a little confusing, isn't it?... 400 m race pace sounds like a good goal for strides (for most people, there's certainly exceptions where people can run a 400 m at almost the same pace as a 100 or 200 m).
I’m going to get back into this I used to do these while doing long jogs Periodically like I’d pick a sign or tree and then do strides i guess it’s called Fartleks because I’m jogging and then accelerating. I didn’t realize it’s called “strides”. It’s just fun fir me to go faster, then recovering. Since I’ve started running again my palpitations have been healing. Tells me it’s been a stress thing the whole time I had those in excession.
It would be awesome if this video had an accompanying 2 minute video that just showed the running- you have an older one kind of like that- with just a little text over to explain the technique.
Hi Jason, thanks for all the great content. Should the strides be always done at the end of a run, or u can sprinkle them every kilometer/mile during your easy run to get the most out of them ?
Thank you. Still rather new to running. There are so many terms in these running forums, its very confusing. I ask and i usually get a half witted comment but not a full explaination. This is good stuff. Thank you so much!!! 5☆
Ice Barrel sounds nice. I like that they have a discount for active and former military and first responders. The poor man option is a Rubbermaid 100 gallon stock tank for 1/6 the cost. I turned mine into a fish pond after using it for ice baths for a couple years. 😃
His own website had an article reviewing two studies that demonstrated ice baths blunt the hypertrophic response in muscle. I have no objection to Jason trying to make money from ads, but I wish he addressed this through the same avenue as his anti-ice bath stand.

That’s a big negative. Bread and butter for endurance athletes are miles. Strides are cherrys on top.

@@danielfarrugia3884 Agreed. Mileage with strides at the end, and also dedicated speedwork sessions.

Thanks Jason. Strides have always confused me, not anymore. Clear and concise explanation.
Jason this video is a great example of what "running strides" mean. It has made it clearer for me and now I know what to do. Thank you. 👍

This was really helpful. It took me awhile to find a video that actually explained what strides are. Most just said why you should do them
This is the explanation I needed before my first stride workout tomorrow. Thank you!!

best explanation of strides I've seen so far
Learned quite a bit from your videos. Thanks for making such informative content!
wow seeing it demonstrated is so different than reading about it. Nice video.
Thank you for the video did my first set today!!!
I think I might need to slow down my strides a bit 3,30 is not my 5k pace I will slow down on my next ones. Thanks good video!
All the while i thought stride is all out speed for certain time or distance. This video show me the correct way of stride.

Nice video. I do them on my bicycling/xt day. Like brick strides or something.
I used trash can instead of ice barrel and now use rain barrel at home. I hate when I see something made and marketed that I missed out on. 😅
Thanks for the demonstration

Great explanation! Does it matter if you do strides before or after? Also, what's the ideal weekly frequency for doing strides (x1, x2, x3?)
Ice baths inhibit muscle protein synthesis after working out. Any takes ?

So basically is a control up to 95%, hold 5sec, then slow down, and not just stop.
great tips thx!
Such a beautiful and detailed explanation. I have looked around and found nothing useful anywhere.
Thanks !
I am confused. I have hear about slow easy run, interval run and tempo run as 3 workouts. What are strides closest to?
Strides are more like drills than a workout. See the link under the video for a lot more detail!
My shins hurt when I run that fast. When I run slower they don’t hurt.
How many times a week would you recommend?
He says in another video you should do it at the end of the easy runs that precede a workout or a long run (or a race).
Looks like Denver
do you (or anyone else) have a good link to a couch to 5k? i seem to be finding spammy ones
Do you mean video or app? For app the UKs NHS "Couch to 5k" is standard.
