The black box with green lights isn't actually mining related. It's a Drobo that holds a lot of my data (photos, music, videos, etc). ROI used to be much better earlier in the year, but exponential growth of mining and the difficulty rises have really put a damper on things.
The ASICs handle the computing so minimal strain on the Mac for BTC mining. I do Altcoin mine separately on my CPU though so that does put a strain, but isn't noticeable since CPUMiner only takes up unused CPU cycles.
Various prices because it's been going down the last few months. A lot of them I actually got from the 0.15 BTC ASICMiner Coupons for previous purchasers.
The USB Hub is an Anker 10-port USB 3.0 Hub and the fan is the Artic Breeze USB fan. The Anker hubs aren't available anymore under that brand, but the AItech hub is the same unit rebranded. I've added a link to where you can get them in the video description above (can't add links in comments).
Little over 0.7BTC with 39 miners at current difficulty which sux. Used to be a lot more. 5 USB3.0 Anker/AItech hubs that hold 10 USB ports each. Those 5 connect to a single 12 port USB2.0 hub which connects directly to a MacPro using just one USB cable upstream. It won't mess up a PC, but you have to make sure your hubs can handle it all power-wise. I had to spread out where my 5 USB3 hubs connected to the 12 port because it splits power duties in half (6 + 6). Otherwise USB dropped out.
I keep hearing that... Funny though that my batch already made ROI. In fact between cheap electricity (bill hasn't gone up at all with these), relatively cheap group buys, and the fact that I got half of mine with the ASICMiner 0.15 coupon for previous purchasers, I'm already in the black. I've effectively only bought the first few and got the rest from mining profit. Up to 38 now and growing. Now I did get in long before difficulty went nuts the last two weeks so that could be a factor.
It actually doesn't take much... using USB2 hubs you could connect this to a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBoard and run BFGMiner or CGMiner on them instead of a full blown PC/Mac.
My Mac Pro is on all the time anyway as home media server so that wouldn't really save me much. The new CuBox-i from SolidBase looks interesting though.
If your GH/s aren't as high as they should be, or you have odd-man-out miners that are green, check your power usage. The miners take 500mA each, thats 4A @ 5V for 8. Most high end usb hubs won't provide more than 3A
What programs you strongly advise using with mac os for mining? do you have a bitcoin wallet program for mac? how much you get in USD per month? is it hard to exchange the BITCOINS for USD? sorry so many questions!
Very? Not as much as I would like, but if you have cheap/free electricity and enough of these Block Erupters from low-priced group buys, then you will make some BTC over time. The Butterfly Labs units have better ROI but the backorder list is huge.
That's the path I took, but I got in before difficulty got so crazy. So no, it wouldn't be worth it to start now. It may be possible again with the next generation of ASICs though.
Btw I started with the USB miners without any expectation of profit from these. I have other plans for bigger iron ASICs for the profit making. This was just going to be a trial run. So color me surprised when I was able to build it 3 fold+ from BTC earned. So many naysayers out there and I've been one myself. Oh well.
I've been researching into bitcoin, how is the return investment on those 8 ASIC's you bought? I've been thinking about spending 200-250 and just leaving my system run in the background.
My preference is for BFGMiner for Bitcoin and ASICs/GPU mining and I use Pooler's CPUMiner for Scrypt Mining. I have various wallets but mostly rely on Blockchain.info and Coinbase. I backup my wallets locally but I don't rely on their active form locally, I use web based wallets so I can access from my phone and anywhere. Enough for lunch and some bills, but not enough for a Bugatti. Not hard when you're verified level2 on Coinbase. No prob, happy to answer.
I really want to get into Bitcoin mining but the equipment is very expensive and takes a long to time to earn your money back or you can find cheap equipment that doesn't make a dime. Could you recommend a few miners that are affordable ($100-$300) and I'll make my money back within maybe 6 months. Thanks :)
what software were you using in the video and what if you use the block erupters mining different coins like lite coins or different type of crypto coins...
BTC Guild has them for 0.60 BTC and there's a group buy that has them for 0.55 BTC (look for Canary USB Groupbuy). That comes out much less than $99 at current exchange rates.
If you're going to use them with BFGMiner, then yes, you need drivers. Do a google search for: silabs block erupter driver Should be the first link you get back. CGMiner uses different drivers...just do a google search for: Zadig and CGMiner.
Imstillgaming: it is worth it but not with the Block Erupters if you get them new now. I keep these running since they already paid for themselves months ago and I have other ASICs that are more powerful and efficient now. For USB stick like ASICs, the Bitfury based ones are good if you can find them for a decent price (most of the ebay prices are way too expensive). You're better off with getting the board based ones or the larger mining boxes like the KNC's if you can afford them.
how many bitcoins are u able to mine in 1 week and with how many miners? also how do you exactly connect those hubs? just straight to the computer? what about multiple hubs in one hub? so you have 1 main hub and 9 sub-hubs connected to it - will it work or will it fuck up my PC somehow? :D
CGMiner 3.2.1 for GPU Mining, BFGMiner 3.12.0 for ASICs (there are a lot more than what I had in this year old video... check out my other videos for those).
hey philip, Im just curious. how much are you making on average per asic usb miner. I'm really interested in this, so I would really appreciate the information. Thank you
Check the date on the videos you're commenting on... these aren't the only miners I have now.. I'm doing fairly well actually... a few thousand a month even at today's low BTC exchange rate.
ASICMiner is the company that manufactures the Block Erupter... if you mean the software, you download it yourself. There are a few different ones you can use but the most popular ones are BFGMiner and CGMiner.
Kai: the mining software is available for Mac and is same amount of work to get it going as you would on Windows or Linux. The two most popular mining software you can use are CGMiner and BFGMiner.
+Nacho Lasdica Unless you have free/super cheap electricity, an empty warehouse, and free/cheap internet connection, the days of individual non-commercial miners is long gone. Most profitable miners these days have warehouses full of mining equipment in south east Asia. That said, search google for CGMiner.
+Kyle S Not a lot these days. Most of these miners are decommissioned now since this was a long time ago when you could actually make some money mining. You really can't do that these days without a large warehouse and free/cheap electricity now that the BTC Difficulty has gone way up.
+Kyle S unless you have very cheap electricity or free electricity and thousands of $$$ of initial capital to buy the big gun asic boxes, then no it's not worth it anymore.
Depends on your initial cost outlay. For the equipment shown here you'd be lucky to make 0.005 BTC a month. For 1 Bitcoin a month you're talking about around $25,000 worth of ASICs to purchase to start at the current Bitcoin difficulty and it gets exponentially worse over time. That's why the majority of the Bitcoin Mining power is in China or South East Asia these days with warehouses full of mining equipment. If you're still interested, you're better off using the rentals at nicehash.com and pointing them to the Bitcoin Mining pool of your choice. The days of the individual miner is basically over; it's all institutional mining now.
Why would you want ASIC Block Erupters? They're pretty much worthless these days. Note this video is 4 years old and the Block Erupters were already almost obsolete at the time.
How much does this mining rig cost and how much would it get me a month right now? Or are there better and cheaper solutions for bitcoin mining at this moment.. I'm kinda interested in doing it myself :D I just don't wanne slow my computer down or anything^^
Lorenzo501: It wouldn't get you much these days... there are better, but not necessarily cheaper options out there now. Most of the lower-end ones that are popular are based on the BitFury Chips. I've got a few of them myself. Of course it doesn't mean I shut these down... every little bit helps. None of these slow the computer down since they take care of all the calculations. The computer just acts as a gateway. In fact I have a few Raspberry Pi's connected to some miners right now so you definitely do not need a lot of horsepower.
So how much would one BitFury Chip cost and how much would it get me a month? Or how do i calculate these incomings.. Probably takes ages to get back what you spend >.

wow that still takes years to get your money back xD and when the difficulty gets higher it gets almost impossible :[] i see there are mining rigs with like 30-38GH/s though which cost like 800-900 dollar and make like 300 dollar per month until the difficulty rises :/ hmm
It is completely useless to try to start mining now.... its impossible to make money. Sorry but you missed out, its better just to trade to get bitcoins.
Crankity: believe whatever you want, no skin off my nose. I'm not talking theory here, just practice. Bought 2 via eBay for too much, some full price (6) from BTCGuild, got equal amount via the 0.15BTC coupon deal for previous purchasers, got a bunch more over time uber cheap with BTC I earned via mining (no outside money) and boom, got 38 running now with only fully paying for a few from $. Everything else it's making now is paying off the original 6 or so I bought plus. That's ROI to me.
hello im from the philipines. and i'l watch your video and its awesome work.. i like to do it sometimes but.. i dont know where to buy that usb miner in here philipines.. please help me thanks :)

My good friend, If the tool was effective for mining and generating profit they wouldn't see them they would use them themselves. Bitcoin isn't profitable unless you're doing it with a bot network. At this point in time you may end up spending more money on power. Maybe look at litecoin.

You need install the SILabs USB comm drivers first to use it with MacMiner (the BFGMiner window or ASIC window).
The hubs are USB 3 but I have them all connected to a USB 2 Hub and my Old Mac Pro that the main hub is connected to only has USB 2 ports.
I miss these days
It actually doesn't take much... using USB2 hubs you could connect this to a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBoard and run BFGMiner or CGMiner on them instead of a full blown PC/Mac.
Could you share the model of hub and the fan you are using it looks like a nice setup - thanks!
Hello what program are you using to have those ASICMiner's mining?
hi, i just got my "USB AsicMiner" but my macminer doesn't use it (or can't?) .. how can I install it? thx
My Mac Pro is on all the time anyway as home media server so that wouldn't really save me much. The new CuBox-i from SolidBase looks interesting though.

That's the path I took, but I got in before difficulty got so crazy. So no, it wouldn't be worth it to start now. It may be possible again with the next generation of ASICs though.
Thanks for the response earlier. Do you need to install drivers for these? If so, where did you get the drivers?

Added an updated view of my setup to the description as a link.
Is this USB 2.0 ?
so it's basically worthless to get like 3 usb miners now and mine for more, since it will mine like 0.05 btc right? :X 6.2$/week, not so much...
I've been researching into bitcoin, how is the return investment on those 8 ASIC's you bought? I've been thinking about spending 200-250 and just leaving my system run in the background.

where you bought?
"I am going to activate the usb hub" 05:41
LOL
How much do you think I would make with 9 asic block erupters running 24/7?
$0.00
You can't make anything anymore with block erupters. Too low powered to make a dent at the current Bitcoin difficulty.
I really want to get into Bitcoin mining but the equipment is very expensive and takes a long to time to earn your money back or you can find cheap equipment that doesn't make a dime. Hi phil,
Could I ask you how much rescource (an average for cpu mhz and ram mb ) takes each usb key to the host computer?

where do you get the usb miners from and at what price?
What is your favorite mining client? I use Asteriod. Would you recommend MacMiner?
Can i know from where you brought the usb asic miner ?
how many bitcoins are u able to mine in 1 week and with how many miners? also how do you exactly connect those hubs? just straight to the computer? what about multiple hubs in one hub? so you have 1 main hub and 9 sub-hubs connected to it - will it work or will it fuck up my PC somehow? :D

How much do one of these cost? and where can I get one?

im also thinking that. found out yet?
is it worthed to start whit the usb miner

Today in 2020, absolutely not.
@@jed1mstr thank,s i wont buy theme !! am new to this but i learned it 5 years ago but never did it
Also, I am running these on a Mac Pro.
How much you can make with it
Q. Can u do this with a mac?
Yup, I have these connected to my Mac Pro.
Philip DeLeon If you get the Block erupter does it come with the ASICMiner?
ASICMiner is the company that manufactures the Block Erupter... if you mean the software, you download it yourself. There are a few different ones you can use but the most popular ones are BFGMiner and CGMiner.

Hello Sir...
May i know how many BTC per day did you earn?
I got lucky with my Jalapenos. So i did make a good profit. You should invest in a raspberry pi so the power consumption can be the lowest.
Most came from BTCGuild, but some of the others came from eBay and BitCanary.
where to buy miner usb ?
Can you recomend me a software to mine bitcoins?
+Nacho Lasdica Unless you have free/super cheap electricity, an empty warehouse, and free/cheap internet connection, the days of individual non-commercial miners is long gone. Most profitable miners these days have warehouses full of mining equipment in south east Asia.

which coin does she mine? what is the hashrate (MH / S) ?
Have you made a private jet worth of money out of this?
I paid $139 two weeks ago. Already down to $99 now. :(
Man how much you make with this setup
8 years ago when this video was made and Bitcoin hovered between $300 and $50, quite a bit which today is worth much much more.
Getting mine soon, but all of these people expect it to be an instant get-rich scheme. It's hardly that. Gotta have patience.
about how much money do you make daily with 6 asic miners?
You don't make much, but after the cost for equipment is payed off its like free money after that.
how many bitcoins do you mine per week with setup
+Kyle S Not a lot these days. Most of these miners are decommissioned now since this was a long time ago when you could actually make some money mining. You really can't do that these days without a large warehouse and free/cheap electricity now that the BTC Difficulty has gone way up.
