    When I was younger, my favourite pastime in the winter was digging snow tunnels under the large piles of snow that were cleared from the road or through snow drifts. I was also claustrophobic. You would think I would know better, but time and time again, I would dig snow tunnels and shove myself into small tight spaces under several feet of snow. Somehow never had any collapse on me, which I think is just pure luck.

    Brazilian here
    A little context about it: Minas Gerais ( translate as General Mines) has a very very long history about gold and metal in the area. Just for an idea, the entire city of Lisbon was rebuild after an earthquake and 65 feet tall tsunami with gold tax from Brazil for decades. This is just to give an example of proportion.
    I checked the Brazilian news and said " the tunnel is equivalent to a 13 floor building, is deeper as the metro line. The man nickname the place as a Bat-cave and took an year long"
    About the foundation, Minas Gerais specific has a clay soil, or Brazil dirty as geogessr referring, so is really stable. Moreover the houses in Brazil are made with bricks, different than north America where is more drywall and wood base. It's close to a small fortress, that's why you see weird architecture 😂
    Besides than Minas Gerais is a very catholic state, and the strangeness didn't finish there.
    Because many slave people died in the mines, many people still believe many places are haunted so is not far fetched to see people doing weird things because believe is haunted in some degree ( As an example, walking to Aparecida do norte is 300km walked people usually do to pay their vows)
    Minas gerais also have other touristic attractions like ET of Varginha or Ladeira do amendoim where your cars go uphill.
    Just a reminder Minas gerais is almost the size of Texas, so 💩 happens there all the time.
    I hope this help to understand how Brazilian this news is 😂

    • @williamchamberlain2263
      @williamchamberlain2263 4 месяца назад +2

      Good geology; thanks!
      The rebuild of Lisbon was a big thing - from what I recall they had some pretty stringent requirements for cross-bracing the timber frames so buildings would stand up to the next earthquake. Am I right in that?

    • @TripImmigration
      @TripImmigration 4 месяца назад +3

      @@williamchamberlain2263 As long I know, it was a absurdly huge catastrophe.
      As I read recently, the earthquake was in a catholic celebration day, and the earthquake was almost 9 on scale (here in Japan we had this year 7.4 on scale and 11.000 houses were destroyed in Ishikawa, 9 is 100x bigger).
      But the caveat is in Lisbon alongside of earthquake, a tsunami 20 mts (65 feet) happened not long time after, so you can imagine many people with candles, tried to escape of an earthquake and fire and when they went close to the beach to grab water to combat the flames, they confront a ginormous tsunami.
      Just to imagine is terrifying.
      Now then, after that Portugal raise the tax in Minas Gerais, if I call right my history classes,was 1/3 of the gold extracted in Brazil was just tax to Portugal for decades. Not by saying Portugal paid most of there debt with other European nations with our gold too; means most of the gold in Europe is ours 😂. We gladly accept back 😄
      This also became a reason for two different revolution and culminating with independence of Brazil.
      About structure: Same of the structural thing happened in Japan more recently.
      Here in Japan they also passed a law the houses after 1981 should fall over instead collapse floor by floor. So if you take a footage of Ishikawa this year you can see clearly which buildings are before and after 80's
      Anyways I'm sorry if I'm not that good in history because my area is numbers, so may I forget some details.

      We have a funny conservative spin in Poland right now, which is kinda oposite but the same as Lindel's case, because a private right wing TV station (supported and owned in part by the largest conservative party) is having companies that bought ad time pulling out because of antisemitic and anti-immigrant remarks of a couple of the presenters. The companies that are forced to still have their ads displayed (because of ongoing contracts) are using these time slots for anti-hate speech ads. And right now that TV station and that party are crying about suppressing freedom of speech, politicizing news (like u fokin wot m8) and boycoting the companies that pulled the ads, such as Ikea and so on. They paint themselves as saviours of democracy. It's so funny and so ridiculous.

    that 40m tunnel is actually crazy.
    that Brazilian dude is both out of his god damn mind and actually smart as hell.
    The idea of tunneling 40m VERTICAL is crazy on its own, but he did it with precision and and managed to not collapse an entire block. Holy shit. That's absolute madness. Anyone that thinks that's a cakewalk, try digging a straight hole more than 5 m down, its hard as fuck and often involves a bunch of testing to make sure that shit doesn't collapse immediately. Ask any structural engineer. this 70 year old dude was either a genius, lucky as hell or absolutely insane... excavating something completely vertical is so difficult and he did it casually in his motherfuckin kitchen... In response to your ice rant there is a theatre in Detroit called the Majestic Theatre, which opened in 1915, and part of it's bling was that it had "air conditioning". This meant that there was a basement underneath there large blocks of ice was dumped then large fans in the ceiling would draw the cold air up into the theatre.

    My grandfather told me about the ice harvest which was common in 1930's Silesia (Germany back then, Poland nowadays) where he grew up.
    Big chunks of ice got draged to a nearby basement of sorts where it got stored and the space surrounding got stuffed with straw. Appearently the loss was minimal thanks to short transportation in freezing conditions and good insulation during storage.

      We had these ice collection and seasonal storage of ice in sweden to ,ther where ice cellars where they stored the ice blocks under saw dust .
      When sub zero temperatures were required for the ice customer, they crushed the ice an mixed it with salt the melting of the ice when it became salty, would freze stuff . This is how ice cream was done originally .
      Today there are ice cooling systems built for producing
      City wide water based air conditioning, big piles of snow from snow clearing is dumped on a snow dump site ,under the snow there is brine filled plastic pipes ,and the whole pile is covered with wood chips and saw dust when the snow season ends . They have tried modern insulation plastic foam tarps stone wholl but the old time wood stuff was unbeatable .
      Sometimes snow can be made with snow cannons if there is not enough in the dump.
      Even doe the pile is outside during the summer , it would often not melt if there was not active melting from below.

Hence the water reference. Magnetic catapults replaced the steam design which was decades old, but at significant cost overruns and several years of delays to get the new tech working properly. He has brought this up before.

I've been beaten up for being Jewish, I was was lynched by a gang with swastikas drawn in their arms with pens when I was 10 years old, and I'm scared by everything going on around me. As I said, I stand with Palestine and condemn Israelis horrific actions, I donate to gaza charities and i march for them in solidarity, but I very much appreciate the way you choose your words sensitively and carefully. FYI, the "ch" in Chabad (as in every Hebrew & Yiddish word) is pronounced like in the German _ach_ (the "h" in Habad is also really that). Also the accent in Lubavitch is on the 2nd syllable - loo-BAH-vitch.

    There's like, some kinds of electro-magnets that _can_ be "quenched" by dowsing them in water (or some other methods) to rapidly de-magnetize them, i believe MRI machines have such magnets with built-in quenching systems in case of emergencies (that completely destroys the machine in the process). Not sure if they're the same magnets used in these elevators though, and if they are they're probably encased to protect against external quenching (short of the whole elevator being submerged, which is already a serious problem and demagnetization of the system might even be desired 🤷)
    Trump probably heard something about these kinds of magnets from someone at some point and concluded _all_ magnets just die when they get a little wet or something 🤦

    • @randomname4726
      @randomname4726 4 месяца назад +1

      I believe the "quenching" of an MRI is simply releasing the pressure of the liquid helium and allowing it to rapidly boil away.
