My well marked Bible is like a textbook to me. All my notes from Bible College, sermons, books etc are all in there. My kids say they will probably fight over it when I pass away lol
That's beautiful, lol. I agree with joint custody. Maybe they'll decide none of them will write in it but will post sticky notes for the siblings to see their thoughts.
Just came across your video. I didn't start writing and highlighting my bible until I was 55!! I always thought I was defacing it in someway and you just shouldn't do it. Now that I feel free to write in it I am getting more out of it and easily able to find passages which are important to me.
Matthew. Thank You for the great video. I recently just purchased the Crossway Journaling Bible(Writer's Edition). I got it because I want to get closer to the word and figured Journaling would help. I just stumbled across Your channel and it has helped. Can't wait to see more Bible Journaling videos or tutorials... God bless.
I learn and recall more when I take notes based on what I'm reading. I'm a visual person, always have been. I stumbled upon your video and can relate on how writting notes about certain passages help you recall lessons. Our time in the word is how we are guided by Spirit. Many blessings to you 📿
Matt We are a tiny bit divided in our theology. I don’t quite embrace your Reformed views but on this subject I am now in total agreement. For years I highlighted, underlined and annotated my study Bibles. What I found in looking back was that I had a very limited, selfish and somewhat tenuous grasp on the Faith. I began to collect high quality Bibles and became evermore reluctant to record my ignorance. Of late I have realized that I was actually recording the growth and deepening of my walk with God. Now I only hope the Lord grants me enough time to leave a Scripture legacy to my children and grandchildren. If I may .... a humble suggestion .... I’ve started dating my entries so that in the future my audiences might have some idea of what influenced me to write, highlight or underline. I have accumulated some really nice Bibles .... too many I think and I try to pick what I will write and to whom. Though I like the idea of just one Bible I have lots of people to leave them to. Do you have any suggestions for me? Perhaps a Bible dedicated to each person?? What great video! I am sharing it with many. Yours, in His Holy Name, MikeinMinnesota, ReFIRE!🔥Ministries.
Hi: I have been a writer-in, note-taker, highlighter of my Bible since I first accepted Christ (1993). I lost track of how many Bibles I've marked at around #4 or 5. I'm wa-a-y beyond 4 or 5. I transfer my most important markings to my latest "everyday reader" (currently an NASB comfort print pew Bible) I've printed out on plain paper things that caught my attention, and I glue them into my Bible. I handwrite on end pages things from "the old wiseguys" {Tozer, Chambers, etc.} I also have the bad habit of being a "finger-licker" to turn pages. Generally, an everyday reader Bible will last me 3 or 4 years, then I research and find a new Bible. I have various study Bibles I use for home study, but my everyday reader has to be larger print, portable, and well made. I hope this helps. God bless.
Thank you for this. I grew up and never saw anyone write in a Bible. So lately with all the journaling bibles and art bibles, it has changed my views. I still write a little if I don't have my journal but I am seeing how this is affective. Thanks so much.
While I prefer the kjv, I'm new to reading the word and started writing in my bible in pencil almost as soon as I started reading it. I wholeheartedly agree with it. I plan to get a half page wide margin and some sepia pens for more room to take notes.
I have been marking on my Odia bible which is the language of Odisha state of lndia. But sometimes feelings uneasy for it. Thank you so much that l viewed this video of your's and came to know the importance of this. Praise be to God.
my wife gave me a Mcarthur preachers wide margin 316 publishing i love it i have a hardback ESV wide margin single col and a Thompson [and speaking of heirloom passed dwn--when one of my elders passed before he passed he gave me his Thompson w/ his notes in it}
Excellent video, thank-you. As someone who has lots of premium bibles, I have writing scattered all over the place. I think what I am going to do, is dedicate one bible for notes. That way I can not muck up my nicer bibles and keep my notes in one central location.
That's my plan. My first KJV Bible, I already highlighted, and have written things in it. I'm also using note books, to make my own miscellaneous note taking. I use 1 for the index, and another for the actual notes.
While I take notes I don’t write in my Bibles. First of all I have many Bibles so some day they will be passed on so those people will like them much more if I have not scribbled in them. Also I find that if I highlight a text each time I go back to that section my eye is drawn back to the same text I emphasized the first time through. If it is blank I may find some other emphasis. Finally by taking notes in a notebook instead of in my Bible I do not have to be so careful and neat. Keeping a notebook also lets me bring in notes from multiple translations and study Bibles.
I looked at my old Kirkbride Bibles. I have one that I've highlighted, and written in. So that's going to be my note taking Bible. It's well used, which means that was my predominantly used Bible.
I realize this is an older video, but I just wanted to share something that helped me immensely. The Word of God is holy. It is the holiest of the holy. The book it's printed in? Not so much. The pages, the binding, the ribbons, the book itself.... not really holy. The WORDS as they were spoken or seen or written... those are the holy part. There's nothing we can do to change those words. We cannot deface something that was given thousands of years ago. A book - a physical book - isn't holy. The Word inside it is holy, and we are meant to engage with it in a way that is meaningful to us.
I would occasionally underline or highlight my bible but all my notes (if I took any) were in a separate notebook. My dad is a bible teacher though and it wasn’t that I thought it was wrong to mark up a bible, it was that there was no note taking space. I got a journaling bible 3yrs ago and also learned how to glue or tape pages in and now I have some sections that are so marked up there isn’t any spare space! I love having my notes right there. I still have lots of blank areas but that just tells me I have lots of learning to do.
With my study Bible or my standard Bible I would much rather just take notes in a notebook. But, if I was to go and get a journal Bible I would definitely journal in it because that's the purpose of it.
I'm a member og a Sovereign Grace Baptist Church member here in Mindanao, Philippines... I believe in the doctrines of grace and the T. U. L. I. P and Church perpetuity...
My daily reading Bible is a really old second hand copy of the ASV 1901. So I don’t write or highlight it because I want longevity of it. But I take many digital notes in Logos, some 3,200+ saved passages categorised into 340+ notebooks. And about 80,000+ words of notes that I have typed into Logos. One day I’ll export it and print a physical backup for daily reflection.
OK, this persuaded me. I've never written in my Bibles in my life except to correct typos, mark mistranslations, and mark in my KJV where the additions to Esther and Daniel go (though none of it for the reasons you argued against). The arguments for it were strong enough to amend my practices.
A man after my own heart. I'm I really like your way of thinking my friend. You're inspiring me I just might sit down tonight and start writing in my Bible again. I stopped writing in my Bible about 12 years ago more like 10 years ago really 10 years ago but I've been reading my Bible everyday now for the past few months finally reached the Book of Matthew so I've developed a habit of reading every morning the word of God the Bible so I'm excited what's the next step in my journey. It looks like writing in my Bible is the next step. What do you say?
My wife has 20+ Bibles but she really does use them all! 😂 She also takes plenty of notes. If she ever passed away, you're right, I'd treasure her Bibles.
After doing my own research about translations being corrupted and which translation is the best... I've come to the conclusion that you should get yourself an interlinear bible and learn Hebrew and Greek.
Brian McClurg this verse means to pay attention to and to listen to it's not against marking in your bible. You need to study the Hebrew to get the right thought of what the verse is really conveying
@@rondarayl1536 Sorry, I wasn't conveying that in any way. I was actually showing a verse that says to mark God's word. I know that isn't the context per say. Just that marking in the Bible can help in that aspect. Blessings 😃
I do agree with you however I was just gifted a new nice Bible and bought markers that claim they don't bleed but I'm not sure and don't want to mess this Bible up struggle is real...God bless
I love reading my Bibles as well I have a world bible school study edition journaling bible and a king size bible and a Spanish bible as well can I write in them with a Bic stic pen or with a phone pen sending you lots of prayers and happiness and peace for you and you're family
I used to write in my Bible, highlight, and underline. Now I use a nice notebook for notes. This way when I want a new Bible I can give this one away used and unmarked. But that's just me. Peace
I love to write in my Bible, but my notes end up wanting to be commentaries, so I use a journal. Also, I need super giant print, and a wide margin, super giant print edition is just to heavy for a go everywhere Bible. My Bible is heavy enough.
I don’t like to make my bible dirty to look at. It’s not “aesthetically” and “visually” pleasing to look at. I just use a notepad in my phone which makes it more organized book by book and other scripture connections.
Yeah me too!! If I have an extra Bible (Which I do) and I give it to someone who really needs one, I can give them a nice leather Bible that they can have and make it personal, not get a hand me down coloring book!! That's what notebooks are for. I wouldn't want a book with other people's notes and comments, that's horrible!!
That's a good way to look at it. I have LOTS of Bibles and I don't know why but I'm a stickler when it comes to them. I suppose that when I would get my hands on a used Bible it would often have notes based on very basic things and sometimes based on religious ties to Catholicism or JW. I just like it clean so I can hear God speak to me and I usually tend to give those Bibles away. I just bought the smallest pocket Bible in my entire collection by Christian Art Publishers from Amazon for $20 It's my new Take Everywhere Bible than to lug around a backpack with my Thompson Chain. You should look into it, it's KJV with both Testaments. It's a very beautiful, solid Bible about the same size as the Gideon Bibles they used to hand out at school, I'm going to buy more to hand out.
Well, when I look at an old Bible and I look at their notes, some good, but some verses are highlighted to fit a certain narrative or agenda based on religion so that's why I'm careful, I certainly don't want to lead anyone astray! But I do have a seperate KJV I use for verses I do not want to forget so it's my highlighted Bible. My Thompson Chain is full of stuff in it so I don't need to write or highlight anything in it. If people want to write notes in their Bible, I highly suggest Wide Margin KJV Bibles. It has wide spaces toward the edge of the page used to write notes in. I try to commit what I receive to memory. But Thank you.
I do both. I have an esv interleaved edition that I use as my main study bible and I start the initial thought that scripture triggered in the bible, then link it to my notebook where I finish the thought and write any commentary of my own. I'm not giving that one bible away and that's the only bible that I write in/highlight. While it's not necessary to write in and highlight your bible, it is helpful for a lot of people, especially if you color code by topic. A pastor I used to know once said that he can tell how seriously people study scripture by how long it takes them to destroy their bible.
I also love reading my bibles and taking notes I have a world bible school study edition and a Catholic life Bible can I write them with a regular pencil or a Bic stic pen or a pom-pom pen
James Focht It'll last pretty long but I just checked and someone said around 50 years. If you're trying to pass down your notes to your kids and grandchildren and not try to make any mistakes then I would say write with a pencil and use a pen to write over just to be on the safe side. I'm pretty sure we'll be leaving this world to meet the Lord pretty soon though. :)
Good evening from the Philippines, Pastor Matt. I actually have been watching your bible reviews and I have developed a certain liking to your bible reviews. For one, I noticed majority of your reviews are the ESV. So I got curious about it. Long story short, so I got a complimentary copy of the ESV Diadem with Apocrypha from Cambridge. And when I got to start reading casually from it, I got hooked with the kind of language ESV has. Now, prior to this I have been a NABRE user from my elementary days up to college and theology days. My question now is: I know based on my own observation that ESV is definitely essentially literal, and the NABRE that I have been using before is actually a balance of formal and functional equivalence - I don't know if there is such translation that is as effectively scholarly like the ESV yet strikes like a song in the ears? If you know what I mean, Pastor Matt.
Great video and one that I am sharing in my fb group Markings of a Well Read Bible...lots of Bible marking folks supporting and encouraging one another in their Bible marking and note taking experiences. I'm curious tho, what pens, markers, highlighters, etc. have you found work best in your Bibles? Thanks again for your videos.
I personally never write in my bibles, because I always try to hold all of God's word, as much as I can, in my mind and heart and soul... I also don't write in them, because if I pass away, someone else might find it and hopefully read it and it will be like brand new to them, so they can write in it if they wish to.
If I take notes, I write on a NOTEbook. That way I can carry my notes independent from whatever bible I happen to be reading. Even better: use a ring binder for notes.
I don't like writing in it because my understanding grows over time, and after a while I have a bible I don't read because it's all marked up with notes I don't agree with.
Very good video, I have always seen people have a better grip on the bible knowledge when they use a single bible for many years, it help giving more confidence in their teaching i would say in their presentation of the Scriptures.. GOOD ADVISE ----- By the way, your mentor is not in Heaven, he is in the grave waiting for resurrection. Hope he will be with the Lord at resurrection.
Hey Matthew, just curious... What pens do you like? I've noticed, the finer the pen, the less bleed (or even no bleed). So far my favorites are the Uni-ball Signo UM-151 0.38, Pilot Hi-TEC-C 0.25, and the Pigma Micron 005. None of these bleed. I noticed you had some different color inks. Do you ever use fountain pens, or are they too juicy? (If so, which ones?) TIA
EPHESIANS 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 1 PETER 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Since the Scriptures are 2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17, and it's pure and holy; no blemish and spots, His holy words does not deserve to get blemished and spotted on. Writing, highlighting, coloring/water-painting inside the bible.... are all blemishes and spots, which are all unholy. EPHESIANS 5:27 So that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

That's what a notebook is for!! I don't write in any of my Bibles. If someone needs a Bible, I have a few nice ones they can choose from, but me, I wouldn't want somebody else's coloring book, I might as well save up and buy my own. Also, I have too much reverence for God's Word to write in it. Look at the Muslims, they don't write in their Qurans so why should we?? Would you write Bible passages on the side of your church building with spray paint?!? I didn't think so. In the same way, we must revere the things we use to worship God. God says be perfect because your Father in Heaven is perfect. Use a notebook for heavens sake!! If you had a valuable antique Bible, would you write in it??
That bible he has open in this video is meant to be written in, see the wide margin. Bibles come in differnt types. My grandmother wrote in her bible and at her funeral service, her pastor read some of her thoughts that she wrote. It was like hearing her for the last time. That bible is now a family heirloom. No one's going to write in an antique bible, when they can buy a Journaling bible or wide margin. Also the writting on the side of a church is a bad comparison.
See, I was taught that writing in a Bible was defacing the Word of God and was a sacrilegious thing to do. But I do have a journalling Bible which contains my comments on the scripture.
The book of Revelations says not to add or subtract from. The Holy Spirit should be in you enough for you to remember the scripture. you put your chips on your side brother ! KJV NO OTHER

I can’t help but high light and write in my Bible. This helps me understand and retain what I read. Thanks for this.

I would like to have a Bible like that which has a space next to text so that I could write down observations...
Brother i just can't do it, it creeps me out.
I also love reading my bibles and taking notes I have a world bible school study edition and a Catholic life Bible can I write them with a regular pencil or a Bic stic pen or a pom-pom pen
Loving it!
Great stuff!
I use yellow highlighter 📖
that all sounds good but a concern for me is what happens when you find out your wrong? you just wrote it down in pen and it's there forever.
James Focht cross it out and correct yourself. I've done that too. :-)
James Focht That's exactly why I write with mechanical pencils, I know I'm bound to make a mistake if I write with a pen.
David Martoral don't they fade away over time?
Thank you for your insight.
I have bibles for my niece and two nephews since I don’t have children of my own.
Hey Matthew, It looks like the link to the list doesn't work.
Good video!
Thanks for the encouraging video! Do you have a video about those symbols you use in your bible?
Krist Norsworthy good idea.
Any reccomendations for highlighter that won't bleed besides gel highlighters and colored pencils?
Do you use the same Bible everyday for like reading and preaching or do you switch it up?
Hello do you have a wide margin bible you not using thanks
Pastor Matt, those tabs you use in the Bible, are they 3m tabs, I just want to make sure I don’t tear the page?
Wish I had a bible
Do you need a Bible?

Yes i need a bible
@@marieray1181 Did you obtain a Bible yet?
You mentioned Dr. Bellamy , was his first name Guy?
I write to hard to actually write in my bible. I take notes separately.
Do they make an NASB interleaved bible? I can’t find one
No, but Schuyler is coming out with a wide margin NASB. Evangelical Bible had pre-orders in January, and they are due to be out in June.
I write in mine all the time..I can’t read my Bible without a pen, and a dry highlighter in my hand..
The ground is less sinful... Ouch. Truth hurts.
(If so, which ones?)
TIA
Scotty B I will use anything including simple ballpoints but Pigma Micron 005 is my favorite. :-)
EPHESIANS 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
1 PETER 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Since the Scriptures are 2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17, and it's pure and holy; no blemish and spots, His holy words does not deserve to get blemished and spotted on. Writing, highlighting, coloring/water-painting inside the bible.... are all blemishes and spots, which are all unholy.
EPHESIANS 5:27 So that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

You are most definitely interpreting that scripture completely wrong, He’s talking about us, the church, expecting us to be perfect.
I would if i had a bible

I didn't actually think not writing in the bible was a thing
I don't agree with writing in the Bible. I just buy journals and write in them.
THAT BIBLE YOUR SHOWING NOW ALL MARKED UP IF YOU EVER GET RID OF IT LET ME KNOW I'LL BUY IT FROM YOU I LOVE THE WAY YOU HAVE MARKED IN IT

Sadly, not everyone gets to have children.
It is so nice to go to a thrift store and get a Bible that already has the good bits high-lighted!!
Man, imo.. if you are going to put a lifetime of written out thought into a bible. Get a good goatskin that ages like wine...
See, I was taught that writing in a Bible was defacing the Word of God and was a sacrilegious thing to do. But I do have a journalling Bible which contains my comments on the scripture.
I've been a bibliophile from a very young age and, therefore, I can't bring myself to write in ANY book, much less the Holy Bible.
Allan > Cambridge :)
Allan $$$ Cambridge ;)
Schuyler > all
The book of Revelations says not to add or subtract from. The Holy Spirit should be in you enough for you to remember the scripture. you put your chips on your side brother ! KJV NO OTHER
So what does Haggai 3:1 say?
ok boomer
You aren’t adding words when you write in your bible, your simply writing thoughts from the word, not making “new scripture”. Silly idea.
@@getgle What a immature thing to say.
Do you not have something of substance to add??
No I don’t think I will
Its a sin to write in your Holy Bible.
