Yes i think it was offensive or definitely could be taken as offensive. I agree with Amber Rose, the more appropriate question would have been "what do you do for a living?".
Obviously, it wasnt intentional so i think she should have just forgiven or not forgiven (whichever she wanted) you then moved on. I don't understand why she kept harping on it after you apologised. That was equally as rude.
