Could you do a video thats the opposite of this one? Like 5 manga that surprised me?
New subscriber so you might have already done this haha
That's a really good idea! And welcome to the channel!
InsidiousSwede yeah you should do that Swede it sounds interesting
@@InsidiousSwede I tought solania was pretty good
Slight spoilers for Solanin ahead.
I think Solanin's status comes from people reading it at a time in their lives where they can heavily relate to the main character. I did kind of relate to that aimlessness in life. But I also found it a little underwhelming, if only because I'm not the biggest fan of tragedies. I can totally see someone loving it though, due to the reason I mentioned.
I can see why it might be underwhelming, but i enjoyed it for the same reason as you. :)
As someone who loves tragedies and is a huge fan of Inio Asano, I definitely enjoyed Solanin a lot. However, I can totally understand why people found it underwhelming. I think I loved it for two reasons. First, as I got older I found many of its themes relatable and the more I reread Solanin the more I liked it. Second (and the biggest reason), I loved it much more because I first read Goodnight Punpun, which most people refer to it as Asano's magnum opus. There is a sort of commonality I found with people who read Asano's manga where if they read Solanin first, they usually found it to be a decent series. If they read let's say A Girl on the Shore first, they usually found it to be vile. If they read Goodnight Punpun first, they almost always absolutely love it and will enjoy everything else by him. It's an interesting tendency to say the least.
This might be the reason why i like it so much. I read punpun first and loved it. After that Solanin and Girl on the shore. :)
I agree.
yes exactly this
nichijou is a very japanese centric comedy. it is more of a ridiculous comedy which was done well in the anime but in the manga the japanese sense of humor is lost in translation
That actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the information!
enjoyed the vid, but i just wanted to say i'm one of the people who would say solanin is a masterpiece. I just think you aren't the type of person it's really meant for maybe? for me it really resonated with me on an insane personal level with the whole situation the characters are in and their mental states. the beginning part really is just exactly how i felt after highschool and the themes at the end about how happiness in life isn't always about achieving goals but striving for them with people around you and living in the moment and appreciating the little happiness you have honestly shaped my philosophy today. you may have been disappointed but for people like me it's basically life changing. no hostility obviously just wanted to state my case.
joseph reeves It could be....I guess it depends on the person's tastes and I guess relatable to certain people.
Yeah I've heard nothing but good things about it
i don’t understand how anyone could dislike solanin. Its so well written
Me: _"Don't say Tokyo Ghoul don't say Tokyo Ghoul don't say Tokyo Ghoul"_
me: dew it
U referring to re? XD
I searched up Oyasumi Punpun and this showed up, it better not be here
Same with to your eternity
@@thedream6088 same
A man of culture I see
I looked up Goodnight Punpun unboxing because I bought the manga set and this video popped up.Im just glad it didnt pop up on this list because I spent almost $100 on it lol
I love Wolfsmund, but I can understand why some people don't. The first 2-3 volumes are like anthologies showing the suffering of the Swiss and building hatred for Wolfram. After that it gets into the main, better part of the series. The surviving characters and their armies fight for vengeance and freedom. It basically all comes together into one storyline and has very long (but still intense) battles. I feel like a lot of the people who dropped it early on did so due to the brutality, or they thought that it would be like this (an anthology in which the characters of each chapter die horrifically) the entire series. I'd say if you're a fan of medieval stories, read Vinland Saga. If you're more into intense and epic medieval battles, read Wolfsmund. I love them both. Btw, I believe the author is a female.
I only wish you made this video top 10 instead of 5, watching hype balloons get burst was good fun
Can u do a video about short mangas with great ideas /stories?
Read:. Three days of happiness
I feel you on the solanin one. to me it felt like the manga was very relatable and i felt like it was posing a question which in the end wasnt answered and left me emptyhanded.
Terra formars gets a little bit better but then dips again and I dropped it because it just felt like it was dragged out after a certain arc.
Yeah I kind of agree about Solanin. I thought it was good for sure, but not quite what it was hyped up to be.
Kind of makes me hesitate to read Punpun.
Good topic! I can see how Solanin can be disappointing, but I loved it personally I gotta say haha
Hey JAC! Any plans on coming back? Been missing the content.
InsidiousSwede yes! I’m gonna address in a video once the semester ends mid December. Something happened in my personal life that made the channel low priority for the time being. Slowly getting back into the swing of things tho I will def have content before the end of the year.
KidNamedJAC hypeee :D
Can you do a top 5 horror manga that you liked
I haven't read any of those but Solanin. I agree with you on that one. It was really good but it was so hyped that I didn't feel like it reached that bar for me but I know people who feel like it's a masterpiece are the ones who are just in that perfect age to relate to it. I could relate to some of it too cuz I remembered it being that way for me back when I was that age but I'm already way past the age of the main character to see it 100% still so I guess that's why I wasn't so blown away by it like other people but it definitely was a good story. So yeah, I agree with you on that one. Wolfsmund is a German title. I have no clue what this is about. Gonna have to at least read the summary for that now. I was pretty sure the text on that cover was in German. Great video as always. I agree with that other commenter that you should do the opposite of this video as well :)
lol just bought Saturn Apartments after watching this
I love your videos man, they are so nice and informative about a lot of manga series. I wanted to ask you if you ever considered making a video about your most hated or useless characters in manga or the manga series that were the most emotionally challenging to read? thank you and sorry for my english
gantz
Your username and picture made me burst out laughing lolol I love it
I want to say that, from what I've seen over the years, Nichijou gets more praise and stuff like that for the anime adaptation as opposed to the manga.
I remember back in 2012 and 2013 I saw people talking about the anime on facebook quite a lot, and barely anybody read the manga as far as I'm aware.
Coincidentally, before Vertical licensed the manga, it was Bandai Entertainment that originally planned on bringing it to America, both the manga and the anime, but we all know how that turned out since they quit the anime/manga industry over here and left plenty of licenses to just stay in limbo, so I'm glad it never got released under those conditions.
As for why I feel that more people talk about the anime, from what i have seen of the anime I think sometimes certain chapters/jokes work better when animated.
I read about 4 volumes of it back in 2013 but I honestly didn't really see anybody that I know pick up the manga until the English release, so in that regard I want to say that's why the anime is the more talked about version of the two.
As for alternatives, I'd recommend My Neighbor Seki or Azumanga Daioh if you haven't checked either of those out yet.
Hey, been going through your videos and they are great reviews. I’m just starting to get into manga, reading Barakamon, handa-kun, bakuman and just picked up first couple volumes of haikyu!! Are their any others you might suggest ? I’m not interested in super violent or spirit or demon stuff and porn ish. Not leaving much to read but any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
Mind would be Tokyo ghoul, haiyku, naruto, claymore and black clover
Solanin is awesome. In my top 10 of all time. Have a great day!
Great idea of a video! I don't see this topic very often so it's refreshing. For me, although I'm not talking about manga but anime instead, two series that left me disappointed was Code Geass and Mushishi. I can see why many people love both series, and between the two I like Mushishi a little more, but honestly I found both of them to be quite boring. I don't have any real criticism to defend my opinion though, but I do know they just aren't my taste.
As for Nichijou, I recently picked up the manga and I can see what you mean. I've done similar things with series before where I overestimated it but until I actually read it my opinion turned negative. Anyway, I personally love Nichijou, and that's because it's one of the very few series in the anime/manga medium that encompasses my immature, random, and slapstick sense of humor. I love the series even more because I honestly do not like comedy (my favorite genres are psychological, drama, mystery, thriller, or basically dark/messed up stuff in general), so when I discovered Nichijou, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Also, I don't think Nichijou is all that plot-oriented. It's more like a "turn-your-brain-off" series and something you just pick up and read whenever like I Am a Hero or One Punch Man; just a lot of fun to read.
Nichijou is so funny (the anime at least)
Psyren for me anyway
So far I've been disappointed by Berserk and Oyasumi Punpun so I don't think there's a more controversial opinion than that lmao. It does happen
Tastes are subjective, personally I have found Gantz human garbage and one of the worst manga ever made to my existence and I don't like the fact that so many people like sensational things..
Yh Gantz is probably one of the most overrated series I’ve ever seen. You can tell the mangaka learns from his mistakes with Inuyashiki but Gantz does have an interesting premise and the first few volumes are certainly enjoyable
I agree tho :)
"I don't like the fact that so many people like sensational things..."
My relationship with Baki
What does that mean sensational things?
Uh oh, I just bought Saturn Apartments 1-7..
I agree with everything else on your list so now I'm concerned..
Terraformars i couldnt stand for a specific and weird reason, it presents itself as a sci-fi yet has no idea how science works. It doesnt understand evolution nor biology yet it presents itself as a legtimate/smart series, shown by attempting to explain the science behind things. Could overlook that but as you said the characters were dull and it reeked of an Attack On Titan rip off
Also i liked Nichjio but it's more about the gags than characters and it's rather off putting because of that
Also also i felt Solanin drops the ball because it expects you to feel emotional investment yet offers nothing, very little expression of moments of real feeling.
Amazing video
I think a big part of the problem is that the internet hype machine gives us these expectations for manga. Far too many times I've left a manga/anime disappointed cause based on the word of mouth I thought I too would love it. Everyone has their own specific tastes so when something that's super popular isn't your cup of tea, don't look for reasons why, just move on.
But you already know that, so this is a filler comment now.
Personally the manga that disappointed me the most was psyren. I had heard so many good things about it and when I read the first volume I was really disappointed. Sure the artwork was really good but I feel like it was bleach mixed in with SAO or some other isekai series
I remember Psyren. It was ok, but the ending absolutely ruined it.
Sorry it got axed.
No Platinum End?
I actually don't loathe Platinum End like everyone else. It's 'ok'.
InsidiousSwede i don't either but i think a lot of people are disappointed because they were expecting something as good as death note and i mean it is pretty hard to not get disappointed then.
maran947 Well every Manga is different for different people.
Thomas Fernandez true
Death Note for me... meh
just watch the anime for nichijou it's much better , most of the time the manga is better but often it can be the other way around
Kenshin is fun but the plot aint that good...
i always known terra former was shit
Man Swede you dont like Solanin? Instant unsub and reported to youtube, what garbage taste.
Jk man i respect your opinion, keep making great videos.
One of the most disappointing manga in my opinion was Zetman. Ask why took the author 10 years to essentially just make a long prologue
Gilbeto Rodela dont blame the manga itself blame the mangaka
2:09 so that’s where Obunga came from...
I feel sorry for you that you picked up these series
Matt Lucas eh. That's part of manga collecting. Figuring out what you like moreso than others and what appeals to you personally.
Wolfsmund is already going out of print :| for fu** sake i dislike Vertical now just like Dark Horse, because of all that out of print manga.
But i have read 1-6 volumes of Wolfsmund, i'm lazy to pick up 7 and 8, they are just sitting on my shelf :d. I thought it will be awesome, but real fast at first or second volume i kinda understood that for me this isn't awesome it's just okey manga.
You should give the Nichijou anime a try. It executes the comedy a lot better.
My favorite manga series are maximum ride, a silent voice, and one punch man. I know sum of you don't care but I just wanted to put it out there. Also great video!😁
You should do a top 10 or top 5 manga under 10 volumes.
That aren't one-shots.
Gantz left me on a sour note..like really? That's it?
Christian charles Hell the whole third phase sucked. Should have just ended after the Osaka Arc
Lol A lot of the fans are just glad it finish, I remember a lot of hate after phase 2
Holy fuck yes, Terraformars sounded like the coolest idea ever!!! A bloody sci-fi war against mutate humanoid bugs, I love action sci-fi horror movies this would be perfect. Then I read it. It didn't make any sense and I found myself not caring for a single character
and when they try to make us care they end up dying and i'm left thinking "What was the point of that"
Yeah the execution was just so poor.
Accordion to scientific studies, 90% of people do not realize I replaced the beginning of the sentence with an instrument
I noticed it, but I just assumed it was an auto correct error ... sooo yeah.. hurray \o/ ..?
This video has been in my watch later list for a month now and I've been hoping and praying that when I finally watch it Solanin isn't actually on the list. MY HEART. MY SOUL. SWEDE WHY?! >.
I like Inio Asano's art and storytelling. One of my favourite :)
Interesting video. Great idea!
I really didn't give a damn about Nichijou. I gave it 2 chances and just sold the volume. It wasn't my type of comedy at all. Most people seem to have been introduced to it through the anime which might be much better for this type of comedy. Azumanga Daioh is a much better choice for slice of life short gags series.
The most disappointing series I had the displeasure of buying is Rosario+Vampire. Absolutely vapid and I just made the mistake of buying the whole boxset. Not it's sitting there, reminding me to check every series before jumping all in for it.
Another extremely disappointing manga I gave 3 chances before selling was School-Live!. So many people like it because it's clever at how it uses it's horror but I seriously couldn't care less about any of the characters so ultimately all the horror and death in it meant nothing to me. I really wanted to like it but I just couldn't. The owrst part is. After I sold my first volume of it, I got another one in the LootAnime crate and sold that one as well. Just my luck..
In the end, all of it is a matter of taste, knowledge and experience, so there is no reason to begrudge anyone for liking or disliking any sort of series. And bad series can give good series that much more value, so maybe they are not that bad after all :]
Inuyashiki was so great then flopped half way through......
Solanin is amzing imo, couldt get into terro formars either, gave up after vol.5, also gave up on tokyo ghoul, sun ken rock, some mangas you just dont feel
TheSpanishzombie Gave up on Tokyo Ghoul? How is that even possible? Loool I understand if you gave up on Re but the original 14 volumes are spectacular imo
Glad someone feels the same way about both Terra Formars and Solanin.
And Nichijou is not for everyone. It makes actually no sense, and like you said, nothing happens LOL I really like it. But it's a very specific thing. Glad for your honesty in the vid, Insidious.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions n feelings about their interests.
So if u are upset at all about this man's opinion. Its ok just project ur differences in a respectful manner. It's all about respect. Stay classy people 🙃🙃
Volume 2 of Terraformers is better, because in volume 1 they tell the story of a group of people going on Mars and almost all of them get killed, while on Volume 2 the main story of Terraformers start and they show all the important characters
Hey whats up! Been following your videos for awhile now, and you've inspired my collection in manga.
Think maybe you could do a similar video like this but as in top 10 popular or highly requested manga that you could not get into. Just so your fans can really see your tastes.
Seeing your myanimelist page, I can see manga like Dorohedoro you didn't seem to like and would have like to see your viewpoints on it, since it is also considered a popular seinin manga.
Not sure if this top 10 idea works for you though considering your video style likes to show the physical volumes of manga you have rather than talk about manga you don't have. But in any case keep up the great work!
Wolfsmund is good I enjoyed it very much. Around chapter 10-12 it stops with the “filler chapters” and the plot picks up
I gave Terraformars another chance and after volume 8 it definitely gets better in my opinion still hard to follow at times but the different abilities and insects/animals are pretty awesome
Oh and some of the series that disappointed me are flame of recca(yu yu hakusho rip off), claymore(I couldn't stand the art at some points), fairy tail lol generic bs, and I"s( big waste of time). I have more too lol
I thought Solanin was fine but do feel that it is rather overrated.
Add demon slayer to the list
Where do you sell your manga?
I don't keep track of the mangas I've finished but this video really made me wonder about mangas that left me disappointed and that really made me interested so now I want to revisit all the manga I've finished and note them down.
Nitijyou is very famous for anime. Yeah, i've never heard anything good about manga version...maybe it's too Japanese???
definitely agree with terra formars! i got up to volume 10 or 11 and while it was somewhat entertaining, there were very few likeable characters in the series and it was an action fest
Glad to see I wasn't the only one disappointed with Solanin! The ending just left me puzzled to know why people liked it. I didn't understand what the hype was about. It was simple, straightforward, and unlikable at times.
I think like others said, that they felt like it could relate back to themselves and their life. I guess we didn't feel that way, lol.
great video i felt the same way with Solanin, i didnt love it but i also didnt hate it. that was a very interesting video to watch.
Always love seeing new videos from you especially ones like this! :) I feel like for me personally, a lot of Inio Asano's work leaves me feeling a bit disappointed or wanting a bit more. I loved Solanin, and it's my favorite of his. I did wish that it were just a bit longer especially with all that happened in the end. A Girl on the Shore... was a huge awkward mess for me. >_> The story was hard to get into. I will say that Inio Asano really has a great way of creating these complex characters and just slowly revealing all of the layers in good timing. I'm in the middle of reading What a Wonderful World and the plot is a bit disappointing/lackluster for me at the moment, and I hadn't started Punpun but I am curious to see how much it differs from all of his other work since I've heard such good things about that series. Man, that author has such a knack for really leaving a complex impression on the audience after reading his work! I do love his art style though. :D
What manga is worth reading the most? You seem to be well versed in the art of manga reading. Im new to manga
After reading Punpun, Solanin is kindof a joke compared to it.
Good video ! In my opinion Terra Formars gets really good after the first... 4 or 5 volumes maybe
bro are you sure that's your ig in the description? i just wanna know if it's right so i can follow lmao
Kazuo Koike's Color of Rage
Great video
Hey insidious have you seen anything on the quality of the flowers of evil omnibus edition? I can't find any videos of people picking it up
NiiK_3 Nice size, closer to a Viz Sig edition than a normal size. Good binding, no gutter loss but unfortunately there's significant bleeding through the pages, even more than viz 3 in 1s. Still a nice looking book and once you're into the story you can quite easily ignore this negative point.
Russell Thomas ouch the bleeding through the page part stung but I'll most likely still pick it up thanks for the info
Black Clover was disappointing. I stopped reading it after the third volume.
Katastrophina Well Black Clover is not for everyone.
The most disapointing manga for me, and people will kill me for this, is definetly Monster.
After a brilliant first part it mianders as youre wondering what the point of certain arcs and characters are outside of repeating the same message over and over. The mystique of Johan keeps you invested but the more you learn the more needlessly complicated (which i feel the need to remind people that complicated doesnt equal complex) it all gets. You get the definite feeling of padding and that certain whole swaths of his background should have been condensed.
Really the only thing left is the plight of likeable Dr Tenma, which by the ending is ruined too as the story ruins any harsh reality that were we heading towards.....whole ending is weak as hell too by the way.
I can even tell you where it started to die, during and after the buisness with Vampire of Buvaria Hans Schuwald. It gets soooo bogged down in unwanted side-characters and plots that keep us from why we're here. Which is the only time Johan has the opportunity to do real damage by the way. Instead he ops for killing random people and ending up with a body count lower than actual serial killers....why is this guy so dangerous? I know i know next hitler but he very clearly doesnt want to do that so what makes him more scary than someone like Ted Bundy.
The Spiral omg People Kill me when I say Monster was a disappointment
Great job on 10k!!!!
Thanks!
For me it's Psyren and especially Vinland saga. Not horrible mangas, but I felt like they were very over hyped by others. For Vinland Saga unless you have Nordic ancestry, it just comes off as just a "good" manga. But not a masterpiece as it's niche fans proclaim it to be.
Well I am one of those niche fans, and while it does hurt for you to say that Vinland Saga is just 'good', I can understand that it's not for everyone.
But I will say that I don't think Nordic ancestry has anything to do with liking the series.
InsidiousSwede I really hope you don't take my comment personally. For me it just felt very over hyped on RUclips and on Reddit. Like i rate it a 8/10 or 8.5/10. But a lot of people made it come off as a 9.5/10 or 10/10. Which I guess is the reason why it disappointed me, since I went expecting to be blown away. But didn't and also the fact of taking into the cost of the hardcovers volumes, which made me feel like I could have spent that money on more berserk volumes. I assume it's how some people must have felt with other people over hyping HunterxHunter and Death Note as complete masterpieces, to just feel underwhelmed after reading a few volumes. As for the Nordic comment, Im just assuming it's easier for those of Nordic background to enjoy it more due to its setting.
Nordic heritage has nothing to so with enjoying the series....... an interest in history tho could help.
ARKOVZ Hunter x Hunter imo is a masterpiece! It’s just that the way Togashi writes his stories and arcs are incredibly slow for the non patient. He spends an unnecessary amount of time on world building and can over explain stuff to the N’th degree but when the main event happens, he completely blows all your expectations and predictions out the water with scenarios that just don’t feel Shounen at all. Death Note to me is an amazing series but isn’t a masterpiece since the latter half felt so underwhelming compared to the first half
Great video! Here is my list:
5. Pandora Hearts
4. Drifters
3. Blue Exorcist
2. Area D
1. Übelblatt
Ubelblatt is a good one. Another one of those series that gets unfair Berserk comparisons, and then 'shockingly' doesn't live up to them.
InsidiousSwede Was Ubel Blatt was really 'disappointing'?
Ubel blatt is far from a masterpiece (and clearly not as good as berserk) but berserk hasnt been that great for a while too....
My list:
1. Fairy Tail
2. Platinum End
3. Bleach
4. Attack on Titan
5. Boruto
platinum end for me too. was especially looking forward to it after death note and bakuman. just ended up being a huge disappointed :(
My list, except for Boruto I haven't read, so I would put Gantz instead XD The characters in platinum end are horrible it's unreadable, I dropped Fairy Tail and Attack on Titan. Bleach last half was so bad with lot of nonsense
it is cliche, has asspulls, nakama powerups, weak character writing and is very predictable. that's just my opinion.
When reading manga does anyone else read the sound effects or is it just me?
I think everyone _hears_ them, but if you were to hear the word "crash" in your head and not the sound "crash" then you're reading it wrong.
