Will you be getting a Gannet? Let me know if you are, or why you're not if it's not on your list....

Not going to get one, as I'm not that much into planes, though I do come with a video suggestion: I just saw that Italeri has been busy releasing a new type of starter kit featuring not only some colors, but also the basic tools (flat-sided cutter, horrible looking plastic tweezers, sanding file) and even a small bottle of liquid cement with a brush in the cap instead of those horrible squeeze tubes. And the colors don't come in those cheap tubs, but are shortened Vallejo dropper bottles! Basically, it seems to be a fix to the most notorious problems I've always had with starter sets: Cheap, yes, but quite unwieldy for a beginner.
I immediately had to think of your series of starter set challenges and that these kits would make for an awesome entry where you could not only use just the supplied cement and colors, but also the tools.
As of now, Italeri has released four such kits: A Ju-87 StuKa (72010), a F-16 C/D (72009), a King Tiger (72005) and a M1 Abrams (72004). All are in 1/72th scale. The price point seems to be around 25 to 30 Euro.
Actually, browsing Scalemates right now and searching for the serial numbers missing in the above list, I can see that Italeri has been releasing such starter sets for a few years now, or atleast one set of them in 2017. Never seen those before, though, and they seem to contain different tool sets between them. Strange.

I received my Gannet from Airfix about a fortnight ago and I have to say that just from doing my own unboxing I am very very impressed by the kit, as for the actual aircraft I think it is a wonderful design, has great looks and was almost unique, if not totally unique in its propulsion and wing fold engineering.

good video ... thanks for sharing ... just realized the Gannet is a trike, always imagined it to be a taildragger.... will look forward to adding one to anti-sub lineup ...

That windscreen blob! There's an even bigger one in the gate near the part too.

I had to go back and check to see that one, but you're absolutely right! Must have been debris or something in the injectors?

I'm ten days into my Gannet and it's been a pleasure to build. Everything has fitted exactly and there have been no problems whatsoever.
I won't use the Airfix crew, I'm considering getting the Hasegawa pilots & ground crew set. I'll leave the canopies open as I want to show off all that lovely cockpit detail.

The finesse of the engraved panel lines and rivet detail is a definite improvement over earlier releases. The slightly heavy engraving was a weakness of Airfix's new lineup when compared to other competing manufacturers. Great to see some more obscure Post War/Cold War era British subjects being released too (eg 1/35 Ferret kit which came out recently). If Airfix take the plunge and give us a 1/32 Gannet I would probably get one.

You'll never see a 1/32nd scale Gannet from Airfix - it's simply not their scale (they've said as much).

Preordered one, and thinking of a second kit because would like to have one with wings folded and another with unfolded wings. I’m one of those “pilot” people so am thrilled Airfix is apparently testing the waters by including a full crew complement in this kit. Agree with your points on the instruction sheet but I’m willing to accept the compromise to have those pilot figures - I can always use a magnifier on the instructions and it is much harder than that to find aftermarket 1950s aircrew to seat in the cockpit. Yes, the figures are in the same pose but let’s see what can be done about that. I’m really excited to get started on this kit. As usual, an excellent and thorough first-look from you, Alex. 👍🏻😊
