K Szewczuk There is also a greater variety of books in used bookstores; I find stuff there I would never find in a chain bookstore. There are many hidden gems. I also like supporting independent bookstores instead of chains in general.
Keep in mind with certain types of technology, like TV's, washing machines and fridges, that at one point, it sometimes is better for the environment to replace the item. This usually isn't the case for newer "old" items, but at one point the newer products become so much more energy efficient or less polluting that it may be a good idea to start thinking of replacing it, and bringing the old appliance to a place where the materials can be recycled.
If you buy something new you need the money for it first. It is often not very realistic to constantly replace items that aren't even that old. My parents kept their fridge from when they were married. At 49 years it gave out. Then they bought a new one. There is just no need to replace something that still works perfectly. They also have their old Nilfisk; it is 50 years old. Still works like a charm. What is this constant need to replace things even necessary for?
@@OxundHeiner it's going to depend how often you use said appliance. my parents had 7 kids and water usage dropped significantly when they got a newer, more efficient washing machine about a decade ago. and I'm pretty sure people running home businesses are going to use certain appliances more often than the average person as well (hairdressers, for example) it's laughable to bring up a mixer in comparison to OP's example of washing machines and fridges, since that's clearly not what they were talking about. nobody is saying "it's fine to replace everything because new shit is more efficient" - just that it's not always more efficient or economical to continue using old things just because they still work

In Argentina we usually buy hand-made souvenirs when we travel because there are often fairs where craftsmans sell really nice pottery, or art with some of the history of the place. So it's a really nice option, if you want to support people and have a nice or an useful souvenir. PS: My grammar kinda sucks, English is not my first language. :)
I agree with the souvenir thing, and buying something useful instead. I bought shoes on my trip to Boston this year and they make me very happy every time I wear them. Oh hey, I bought boots in Amsterdam - that was 1993!
I do a bit of both, I love some of the little kitchy things I've picked up traveling, the bottle opener shaped like a cactus from Arizona is on my fridge, but I also like to pick up a nice piece of jewelry or clothing as well I am sipping my tea from a seashell shaped mug from Florida right this minute LOL
My thing is to buy a piece of jewellery when I travel. Nothing crazy expensive, but like a little silver charm for my charm bracelet. They are wearable and I'll have them forever.
I've honestly Never understood the fascination with cheap touristy souvenirs! I have always preferred to get something that I will actually be able to use and enjoy and cherish to remember a trip or a place by, or just taking pictures during the trip as a sort of free souvenir as well
To add to your piece on souvenirs: I always buy something that will be useful, but has ties to the place I'm visiting. F.e. in Italy I'll buy olive oil, which I'd buy in Holland anyway to cook with and last summer in France I bought satches of lavender to use in my room, that I also wanted to buy anyway in Holland. This way, I'll still buy something that reminds me of that holiday everytime I use it!
I do the same and I completely agree with you except for 2 things haha - CDs: I still buy CDs, I love CDs, just because I prefer buying one every other month or so and put it on my music player rather than paying for spotify (I don't like listening to music on my phone because the quality is not nearly as good and it drains the battery soooo quickly), but apart from that I feel like CDs and track lists tell a story that you can only understand if you play them in their right orders. I used to love popping a CD in my car when I had one, or just listen to an album while I'm working or in need of inspiration. - Notebooks: I admit, I'm that kind of person who buys notebook and barely use them xD but I like to think that I store them! I love writing down anything by hand and it helps me a lot - I could not imagine journaling on my laptop, writing down intimate thoughts I need to get rid of on my laptop either, and - as I consider myself a writer - I like having a notebook at hand to write down scenes that come to mind when I'm outside on the train or the bus so I don't forget them. I HATE writing on my phone, and can't take my laptop/tablet everywhere with me when a notebook and pen are enough :)
I love buying cd's too. They're nostalgic to me, I like supporting the artists I like, and they're usually some of the most affordable merch at a gig. I'm just sad that most don't include the lyric books and extra pics and art anymore

I was never a person for the typical tourist souvenirs. But I love bringing snacks with me from a vacation. I'll eventually eat them and remember the great time I had and they won't gather dust somewhere.
In the US there is an organization called Rent the Runway where you can rent special occasion wear for a fraction of the cost for the one time you will wear it. Save money, endless options, no closet clutter and less waste. Plus more people get to enjoy a beautiful outfit rather than letting it sit unused
In Poland you can rent a wedding gown at shops that saw them, and if you buy a gown for yourself, ypu can resell it to that shop after your wedding. It will be used for renting by other people. I am very curious if it is possible in other parts of Europe and by what conditions.
Reminder that the items you buy to replace said disposable items to keep them as long as possible. Waste still occurs when you get "tired" of said item. Like metal water bottles or reusable bags.
It's also nice repurpose items sometimes. Like I have a few old dainty pretty tea cups I don't want to use for drinking anymore, but don't want to donate them to second hand shops yet (which was where I got them in the first place). They make super adorable mini succulent planters for while the plants are still small.

I would like to chime in with the DVD and CD pro people and say that I read in a science magazine that the internet and streaming and downloading films and TV shows takes up a huge amount of energy, more than creating CDs and DVDs and that the best way to watch is to buy second hand where you can (I'm very lucky to have a bookshop where I live that has most DVDs under the Sun and many of them second hand for 4-10 euros) and resell or pass them on when your done (DVD swap) or have a DVD sharing library with family and friends or borrow them from the library :) Same goes for music. I also personnaly like DVDs because that's what I grew up with- I think there's something nice about going to the shelf or the DVD pouch and choosing one and putting it in the DVD player) and also when I'm not using the internet I switch the wifi off of my phone (I do data sharing atm) and just watch the DVD on my laptop it also avoids buffering when the wifi does its own thing. And I know many people stream films for free but that harms the film and music industry, especially smaller companies, but that's my personal opinion.

Woohoo! I have stopped buying most of the same things as you. I did a lot of these things in the 90s (glasses instead of contacts, bringing teas along, VERY little makeup, etc.), but I will always enjoy baking and making my own food. In my family we have two diabetics, one on a heart-friendly diet, and even a dog on a restricted kidney diet. Cooking as much of our foods as possible is a must. Since I started working from home, I bought myself the same shirt in seven different colors and used as my daily "uniform" (to look professional for my online class) and wear them pretty much every day. This has GREATLY cut down on my buying clothes. And when I have worn out older shirts, shorts, and pants, I have started learning how to upcycle them into something different. So far I have made new shorts and shirts from old ones, and one denim cross body bag I am super proud of. Thanks for the ideas for new things I can eliminate from my life.
When I travel I send myself some postcards detailing a fun day, so when I come home I get a fun treat! It’s also really personal to send to friends and family!💕🥰

I usually get a magnet from each country/city I go to. That's all I need. Last time I went to Stockholm and I got not only a magnet but an oven glove with the red horse on. Practical as well as pretty
Great video! I agree with most of the things you say, except for CDs: By far not everything is available online! Much of the music I listen to is either too old or the artists are too small or they decided against putting up their music on streaming platforms. In addition there is usually nice artwork and additional information about the songs within the booklets, which are not provided when streaming ;-)

All that you mentioned makes a lot of sense! I currently am on a journey to a simpler, less cluttered life and to a waste reducing one as well 😊 i recently stopped buying makeup wipes and decided to only buy makeup remover and use reusable cotton rounds. I tried using biodegradable pads but it went bad, my flow is a little to heavy for cotton pads and i ended up staining and leaking everyday 😭 being a student i dont even have the possibility or the time to go to the bathroom every hour to change. I am making an effort not to buy anything plastic (i never ask for a plastic bag and carry my hydroflask around everywhere i go). Something that i struggle a lot with is buying unnecessary souvenirs or clothes or makeup. I am trying my best to search info about fast fashion and ways to contrast it. For now im just going to wear everything i own until it's too worn out and prefer hand made clothes. I cant really stop buying notebooks because im an artist and i like drawing traditionally, but i sure can buy only the ones i need!!
I second the menstrual cup, although cloth pads have gotten pretty good. As for souvenirs, I like to find local antique stores and buy something I really love. This has ranged from an antique wedding gown to home decor, or even just a handkerchief.
I’ve always had difficulty using tampons/menstrual cups, so if that doesn’t work for you either, deff check out Thinx. They can be pricy but I haven’t had to replace mine in a long time and they work so well. I would deff recommend the boyshort style of the Thinx.

@@aristopoieo746 Thinx are period panties, aka panties that come with more absorbent material so you can wear them during your period without any other pads/tampons (I guess depending on your flow?). I've never tried them myself. Worst comes to worst on disposable pads, I find the Always Infinity best. Keeps things dry and is way more absorbent so you can use fewer pads.

I really love how you went over what you don't buy and why. Somethings I think are generally universal, like straws or food/drink containers, but other things like notebooks and baking supplies are definitely things that are going to be dependent on lifestyle. I depend greatly on notebooks and things, because I'm not the fastest typer and lists are a huge thing for me. I also have in the past baked all of our bread from scratch and saved money and packaging by doing that. Plus even things that seem like they would be not a wasteful thing can be. I knit and sew and have been blow away by the amount of yarn and fabric other people keep on hand. You would think that making things that you can with those skills would definitely reduce waste, but it really all depends on how and if you are going to use them. I think I'm going to buy some reusable panty liners to go with my menstrual cup, I've been using organic cotton disposable ones and I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me to get some cloth ones. great input! I buy very little paper products. I have a large bin of rags that I wash and reuse. I also have not bought bar soap in ages. I learned to make my own bar soap several years ago, and have been making it ever since. I make about 40 bars at a time and it lasts my big family over a year. It's a mix of coconut oil and rendered animal fat that is left from cooking. I saponify it with lye. I ususally add tea tree oil for a fresh clean scent. I buy very few disposable baby diapers. I use cloth mostly to diaper my babies . We also don't use a dryer! We hang all our laundry to dry.
With you on a lot of these! Although I love baking :) I also stopped buying earbuds/Q-tips with a plastic stick and switched to bamboo (I live in NL too, and Kruidvat sell them :) ), stopped buying washing-up sponges and use micro-fiber cloths instead (going to look out for one of those wash-bags!), and the main thing, buying only the food I need rather than buying in bulk and ending up wasting it. I realise that last is a luxury - I'm fortunate to have a fantastic fruit & veg market nearby so I don't have to buy from the supermarket - but it makes a lot of difference.
I'm the total opposite on that last point. I love baking and don't mind the mess. But I used to go through sooo much parchment paper because I do not like destroying my baking sheets with stuck on food and scrubbing. I invested in silicon baking sheets and I love them! Saves us time in cleaning, food just wipes right off, and saves us money on parchment paper. Totally worth it. (Also silicon cupcake cups. Mine are heart shaped ❤)
I used to think I'd never stop buying books, but I'm almost 100% digital now. It's 2am and want a new book? You can get it. Digital library books are automatically returned, so no late fees. And most of my reading is on the busride to and from work, so why lug a heavy book when I can read on my phone, which I carry anyway. And I can read at night. I've never found a booklight I like. Seen a movie based on a book? Start reading the book on your way home. Going on a trip? Load a bunch of books onto your phone.
I mostly read on my ereader as it allows me to read while lying down, haha! But I still really love collecting beautiful copies of classics and favourites 😄
I don't have access to a washer and dryer in my apartment so I have to use shared washer and dryer in my building (Although our dryer is currently broken) or go to a laundry mat and I couldn't imagine bringing a cloth pad to either.
The one thing I don't see myself doing is not buying cds/dvds. I like collecting them, my laptop plays them, and I'm not very fond of having media only digitally.
So many great tips! I do agree with buying books and I also love using physical notebooks. I don't really like taking notes digitally and will not really use my notes if they are written on a computer. However, I invested in fountain pens a few years ago. They produce less waste as I just refill them and if taken care of they will end up being less expensive than normal pens as well as me being able to choose the colour of the inks. I do recommend that for a more sustainable alternative to pens that stop working quickly or that just break.
I started buying everyday jewelry on trips when I was in Amsterdam. It was my favorite city on the trip, and I still have the earrings 5+years on. I never thought that my buying items I use every day as souvenirs as a form of reducing or buying less, but you're right!

I wasn't aware people used makeup wipes as dailies until now, I think. Same way I wouldn't expect people to use panty liners as a daily item, but rather for when your period is soon but might be a little early, or if you have a yeast infection and you're trying to avoid stains getting through your trousers.
Il Al some people actually do wear panty liners daily. An older friend whose had kids wears them daily in case she sneezes (bladder control). You learn something new every day. Lol
I feel bad about using contact lenses but my eyesight is so bad now I can only wear glasses when sitting completely still otherwise I get motion sickness, so switching to glasses only isn’t an option for me, and without my contacts I’m legally blind and can’t get around safely on my own. Kind of sucks :(
If you need something to function, please don't feel guilty about using it. There are plenty of other areas you can make a difference if you wish (and plenty of people who don't bother at all 😉)
The only books I buy are cheesy paperbacks from the thrift store. They're light summer reading for when I'm at my camper. When I've read them all, they go back to the thrift store for someone else to enjoy. Other books, I only get from the library. It's just two blocks from my house.
These are all great! Some don’t work for me at the moment because of where I live and how sick I am. But when I’m able, I’ll definitely do more of them. 💜 I love collecting certain things, but I almost always buy used and thrift items for those collections, and most of them have a use beyond just sitting there. 😆
Agree with most, but I’m definitely someone that collects “outdated” media. Vinyl and dvds. I like have a physical copy of my things, and streaming facilities often don’t have what I want to watch. Plus, I can’t stand music streaming.

Can I just say THANK YOU for making real actual changes? I am so tired of seeing people say they're cutting down by buying bamboo knives and forks and steel straws for out and about when you already own reusable cutlery so just bring your usual knife, fork and spoon with you instead of adding more unnecessary things to your life for the sake of the enviroment.
When I go on a big trip I always save for a splurge item I've always wanted but never budgeted for. Tattoos, accessories, etc. I got my white gold and black pearl necklace that I wear every day in Vegas and I think about it all the time.
I am doing exactly the same (except water bottles because Paris'water is not really tasty). But I totally agree with the Eiffel tower goodies. It is really expensive and not on great quality. I will always prefer a physical book to e reader as well! I used to work at a book store, & you'd be surprised at how specific & niche magazines can be, for example, there was one that was specifically about pens, & a couple that were about watches. But, lol, it's not like you can find those super niche magazines just anywhere, so I understand why most prefer just going online.
I agree with everything I've heard up to this point! Aside from emergencies, I have stopped using disposable menstrual products. In fact, I only still use disposable stuff because I'm working on getting more of the reusable products to meet my needs and frankly...the reusable stuff may be a one-time purchase, but it's a big one. I have to save up money, but I do still have disposable products leftover from before I switched. Also, as for the choice to not upgrade cameras/phones or other technology, a really great option there is if you do wish to upgrade--say, a new camera has a function your old one doesn't--is to exchange or sell items to places that refurbish. That way, if someone wants to get a camera, they may be able to buy your old one for a reduced price. Same goes for phones, and with phones, if you exchange a working one for the new model, there's usually a discount, and the data transfer is often easier and assisted.
Both my sister and I currently wear contacts right now and the brands we use actually come in completely recyclable packaging! The contacts themselves might not be recyclable but the boxes and individual packaging can definitely be recycled, as can the bottle of contact solution.
I get into all kinds of kitchen efficiency like how I grow foods in my garden using old produce that I purchase that I don't want to eat when they've gotten all old and rooty like potatoes, celery, sweet potatoes, and many more items you can plant in the garden straight from the fridge or pantry. Learning to mend and darn old clothing has been great to keep fast fashion or second hand clothing in wearable shape so I don't have to buy more clothing. Otherwise following most of your tips as well.
Can you do an updated self hair cut video? We have similar hair when I straighten it. (I have curly hair, but when I straighten it it seems we have the same thickness.) But I like having a "V" shape in the back that I cannot figure out how to maintain by myself! It seems like there would be a logical way to figure it out, but I'm just too nervous to try it myself. lol

I personally think it’s okay to buy CDs from thrift stores/charity shops/secondhand places. because then you’re not contributing to new waste. A big thing that I like is to buy things like games and puzzles and other things from these shops and then giving them back when i’ve sort of had my fun with them. living that circular economy lifestyle!
It's always your personal choice! Like for me, cd's are a bit waste of space, since I will listen to music with my laptop anyways and I don't have a cd player. But then again, I have tons of books that I could replace with Kindle, but I prefer physical copies over Kindle.
Hello Lucy a good video you’ve done as I think pretty much the same as you when it come to not buying things that you don’t need and it’s a case of being kind of minimalistic so it reduces costs also prevents house cluttering and you have a better idea of what you’ve got in house and it helps oneself to avoid being frivolous so that’s it so take care and cheerio
I do agree with every of your points but... cds I can not stop buying : you can actually not find everything online (I have troubled with some artists online) and I've noticed the is no big diversity in services like Spotify (also many artists struggle to make money, so I'll buy their cds, go to their concerts and even maybe buy some merch sometimes)
Love this. I have been trying to do more reusable things like napkins and when I pack my lunches only using reusable containers and no plastic bags. I need to find a supplement for the plastic bags I freeze the bagels that I buy in bulk for breakfast.

Here in the UK Boots Opticians have recycling scheme for soft contacts and their packaging; maybe other countries have similar schemes? I've been using reusable saintry products and makeup wipes for a few years now and as well as them saving me money I prefer them to disposables.

I love my microfiber washcloth as a makeup remover! And I love my diva cup!! I recently became extremely allergic to pads and tampons. Even the organic ones I was allergic so the diva cup was a period saver! Plus I like that I'm reducing my carbon footprint!!!
I buy school supplies in August when the prices are ridiculously low because we use a lot of pens, pencils, paper, markers, scissors, glue, etc.. I spend maybe $20 a year and we can go creative art fun making mad all year, me and my grandson.

As far as not buying upgrades I think I have something that takes the cake. I remember when I bought my first mp3 player, I hardly had any money then and it was on a trip because I think my CD player broke on that trip or I was just tempted or something and this purchase was in 2005. And as you probably guessed, I still use it. The space on it is crazy limited with 256 MB but all buttons work like new, the sound is just like new, and the display has only a teeny hairline scratch. I don't know how many earphones it has been in a relationship with over the years but the quality of this thing kind of blows me away. Do I kind of wish it would break so it feels okay to upgrade? Yes a little bit but it's a friend at this point. Soon I can name it something like old Betty or Harold or something and I doubt any new one will have this kind of battery life if it needs to power more features and one AAA battery lasts me so many hours. One thing you SHOULD upgrade regularly though is quality shoes with good arch support because your health is just super connected to feet and posture and I ruined my body pretty severely especially knees and lower back from wearing one pair of shoes year round for like 4 years just out of stubborn.
Loved this video! I do use glasses everyday but I also have monthly eye contacts as I exercise more than 3 times/week and wearing glasses makes me very nervous about injuring myself, specially when I do mountain bike.
I also use the monthly contacts, because at my level of myopia (-12.5 dioptres) glasses actually make other stuff appear smaller, and it's all kinds of frustrating. Though I intend to get a laser correction surgery a few years down the line, so hopefully then I'll be able to say goodbye to both the glasses and the contact lenses. :D
There was a disposable razor in a goodie bag I received a while back, I've been using that for travel. Although usually when I travel with hand luggage only it's for short trips when I don't bother with shaving at all 😜
Ooh! Lucy, do you have any interest in making your own pantiners, sandwich bags and lunchbox? If you do, PUL fabric is reusable, water resistant and food safe; I have made several reusable items with it. You can also make your own beeswax wraps. If you are interested in taking on those tasks, I would absolutely love to see a video or mi I series about making your own reusable items!
Hair/Body care products! I would just buy shampoos and conditioners looking for something "perfect" without using what I already had, especially in an attempt to find something cheap that worked well. Now I just buy what I want to use (instead of something "more affordable") and use that
I have been trying to live low waste as well. Makeup is a struggle for me still (I just bought the Besame Sleeping Beauty Collection, lol) but it has made me more conscious about what I buy and when I buy things. I have to remind myself to only buy things when I’m out and need them. But other places I have done good in. I always use a reusable water bottle and I just bought my son a new lunchbox from Planetlunch. It’s really cool medal lunch tray with a lid. I don’t use plastic bags for him anymore. I also got one for myself 😁 It has helped reduce the amount of processed food we eat as well.
I like to donate a lot of my extra items. I feel like if I had more clothing and makeup things that came my way I would probably donate them to a woman's shelter so that they get used and so other women could feel good! As far as books go, I understand the feeling of having a flood of books constantly, I tend to buy used ones, because it's a little bit cheaper but it also reduces a carbon footprint, and books that I am no longer loving for one reason or another always get donated to our local library, or there are these little free library book boxes that you can stock with books. I don't white buy magazines anymore, there's two though that I really love, that I'll read periodically and those usually get donated to the local library or to those free boxes as well. I feel like there are plenty of Institutions that need reading material, especially reading material that is in good shape and possibly newer. It's a good chance to give to others when you are given so many extra things.
Seems like the takeaway is for us to stop buying things we don't use, things we don't enjoy, and replace disposable items with reusable ones wherever possible! Like you, books bring me enough joy to be worth the clutter of keeping them about, but trashy souvenirs do not and I can only use one notebook at a time! My other I'm working on is only buying craft supplies when I have a particular project in mind for them and can start it within a week instead of just hoarding pretty materials and forgetting I have them
If you are for reducing plastic waste I would love to see you try BITE or a brand like them. They are a waste free toothpaste brand that has capsules that you bite down on and brush with water! It seems so cool!
Honestly, I'm a bit terrified of all the "alternative" toothpastes. Oral hygiene and health is not something I really want to experiment with 😅 They do sound really cool though!
Independent bookstore owner here: buying used books can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and still get new books to read!
K Szewczuk There is also a greater variety of books in used bookstores; I find stuff there I would never find in a chain bookstore. There are many hidden gems.

Keep in mind with certain types of technology, like TV's, washing machines and fridges, that at one point, it sometimes is better for the environment to replace the item. This usually isn't the case for newer "old" items, but at one point the newer products become so much more energy efficient or less polluting that it may be a good idea to start thinking of replacing it, and bringing the old appliance to a place where the materials can be recycled.

If you buy something new you need the money for it first. It is often not very realistic to constantly replace items that aren't even that old. My parents kept their fridge from when they were married. At 49 years it gave out. Then they bought a new one. There is just no need to replace something that still works perfectly. They also have their old Nilfisk; it is 50 years old. Still works like a charm. What is this constant need to replace things even necessary for?
@@OxundHeiner it's going to depend how often you use said appliance. my parents had 7 kids and water usage dropped significantly when they got a newer, more efficient washing machine about a decade ago. and I'm pretty sure people running home businesses are going to use certain appliances more often than the average person as well (hairdressers, for example)

In Argentina we usually buy hand-made souvenirs when we travel because there are often fairs where craftsmans sell really nice pottery, or art with some of the history of the place. So it's a really nice option, if you want to support people and have a nice or an useful souvenir.

I do a bit of both, I love some of the little kitchy things I've picked up traveling, the bottle opener shaped like a cactus from Arizona is on my fridge, but I also like to pick up a nice piece of jewelry or clothing as well

I've honestly Never understood the fascination with cheap touristy souvenirs! I have always preferred to get something that I will actually be able to use and enjoy and cherish to remember a trip or a place by, or just taking pictures during the trip as a sort of free souvenir as well

To add to your piece on souvenirs: I always buy something that will be useful, but has ties to the place I'm visiting. F.e. in Italy I'll buy olive oil, which I'd buy in Holland anyway to cook with and last summer in France I bought satches of lavender to use in my room, that I also wanted to buy anyway in Holland. This way, I'll still buy something that reminds me of that holiday everytime I use it!

- CDs: I still buy CDs, I love CDs, just because I prefer buying one every other month or so and put it on my music player rather than paying for spotify (I don't like listening to music on my phone because the quality is not nearly as good and it drains the battery soooo quickly), but apart from that I feel like CDs and track lists tell a story that you can only understand if you play them in their right orders. I used to love popping a CD in my car when I had one, or just listen to an album while I'm working or in need of inspiration.
- Notebooks: I admit, I'm that kind of person who buys notebook and barely use them xD but I like to think that I store them! I love writing down anything by hand and it helps me a lot - I could not imagine journaling on my laptop, writing down intimate thoughts I need to get rid of on my laptop either, and - as I consider myself a writer - I like having a notebook at hand to write down scenes that come to mind when I'm outside on the train or the bus so I don't forget them. I HATE writing on my phone, and can't take my laptop/tablet everywhere with me when a notebook and pen are enough :)
I love buying cd's too. They're nostalgic to me, I like supporting the artists I like, and they're usually some of the most affordable merch at a gig. I'm just sad that most don't include the lyric books and extra pics and art anymore

In the US there is an organization called Rent the Runway where you can rent special occasion wear for a fraction of the cost for the one time you will wear it. Save money, endless options, no closet clutter and less waste. Plus more people get to enjoy a beautiful outfit rather than letting it sit unused
In Poland you can rent a wedding gown at shops that saw them, and if you buy a gown for yourself, ypu can resell it to that shop after your wedding. It will be used for renting by other people. I am very curious if it is possible in other parts of Europe and by what conditions.
Reminder that the items you buy to replace said disposable items to keep them as long as possible. Waste still occurs when you get "tired" of said item. Like metal water bottles or reusable bags.

It's also nice repurpose items sometimes. Like I have a few old dainty pretty tea cups I don't want to use for drinking anymore, but don't want to donate them to second hand shops yet (which was where I got them in the first place). They make super adorable mini succulent planters for while the plants are still small.

I would like to chime in with the DVD and CD pro people and say that I read in a science magazine that the internet and streaming and downloading films and TV shows takes up a huge amount of energy, more than creating CDs and DVDs and that the best way to watch is to buy second hand where you can (I'm very lucky to have a bookshop where I live that has most DVDs under the Sun and many of them second hand for 4-10 euros) and resell or pass them on when your done (DVD swap) or have a DVD sharing library with family and friends or borrow them from the library :) Same goes for music.
I also personnaly like DVDs because that's what I grew up with- I think there's something nice about going to the shelf or the DVD pouch and choosing one and putting it in the DVD player) and also when I'm not using the internet I switch the wifi off of my phone (I do data sharing atm) and just watch the DVD on my laptop it also avoids buffering when the wifi does its own thing. And I know many people stream films for free but that harms the film and music industry, especially smaller companies, but that's my personal opinion.

Woohoo! I have stopped buying most of the same things as you. I did a lot of these things in the 90s (glasses instead of contacts, bringing teas along, VERY little makeup, etc.), but I will always enjoy baking and making my own food. In my family we have two diabetics, one on a heart-friendly diet, and even a dog on a restricted kidney diet. Cooking as much of our foods as possible is a must.
Since I started working from home, I bought myself the same shirt in seven different colors and used as my daily "uniform" (to look professional for my online class) and wear them pretty much every day. This has GREATLY cut down on my buying clothes. And when I have worn out older shirts, shorts, and pants, I have started learning how to upcycle them into something different. So far I have made new shorts and shirts from old ones, and one denim cross body bag I am super proud of. Thanks for the ideas for new things I can eliminate from my life.
When I travel I send myself some postcards detailing a fun day, so when I come home I get a fun treat! It’s also really personal to send to friends and family!💕🥰

Great video! I agree with most of the things you say, except for CDs: By far not everything is available online! Much of the music I listen to is either too old or the artists are too small or they decided against putting up their music on streaming platforms.
In addition there is usually nice artwork and additional information about the songs within the booklets, which are not provided when streaming ;-)

All that you mentioned makes a lot of sense! I currently am on a journey to a simpler, less cluttered life and to a waste reducing one as well 😊 i recently stopped buying makeup wipes and decided to only buy makeup remover and use reusable cotton rounds. I tried using biodegradable pads but it went bad, my flow is a little to heavy for cotton pads and i ended up staining and leaking everyday 😭 being a student i dont even have the possibility or the time to go to the bathroom every hour to change.
I am making an effort not to buy anything plastic (i never ask for a plastic bag and carry my hydroflask around everywhere i go). Something that i struggle a lot with is buying unnecessary souvenirs or clothes or makeup. I am trying my best to search info about fast fashion and ways to contrast it. For now im just going to wear everything i own until it's too worn out and prefer hand made clothes. I cant really stop buying notebooks because im an artist and i like drawing traditionally, but i sure can buy only the ones i need!!
I second the menstrual cup, although cloth pads have gotten pretty good. As for souvenirs, I like to find local antique stores and buy something I really love. This has ranged from an antique wedding gown to home decor, or even just a handkerchief.
I’ve always had difficulty using tampons/menstrual cups, so if that doesn’t work for you either, deff check out Thinx. They can be pricy but I haven’t had to replace mine in a long time and they work so well. I would deff recommend the boyshort style of the Thinx.

@@aristopoieo746 Thinx are period panties, aka panties that come with more absorbent material so you can wear them during your period without any other pads/tampons (I guess depending on your flow?). I've never tried them myself. Worst comes to worst on disposable pads, I find the Always Infinity best. Keeps things dry and is way more absorbent so you can use fewer pads.

I really love how you went over what you don't buy and why. Somethings I think are generally universal, like straws or food/drink containers, but other things like notebooks and baking supplies are definitely things that are going to be dependent on lifestyle. I depend greatly on notebooks and things, because I'm not the fastest typer and lists are a huge thing for me. I also have in the past baked all of our bread from scratch and saved money and packaging by doing that. Plus even things that seem like they would be not a wasteful thing can be. I knit and sew and have been blow away by the amount of yarn and fabric other people keep on hand. You would think that making things that you can with those skills would definitely reduce waste, but it really all depends on how and if you are going to use them.
I think I'm going to buy some reusable panty liners to go with my menstrual cup, I've been using organic cotton disposable ones and I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me to get some cloth ones. So thank you!

great input! I buy very little paper products. I have a large bin of rags that I wash and reuse. I also have not bought bar soap in ages. I learned to make my own bar soap several years ago, and have been making it ever since. I make about 40 bars at a time and it lasts my big family over a year. It's a mix of coconut oil and rendered animal fat that is left from cooking. I saponify it with lye. I ususally add tea tree oil for a fresh clean scent. I buy very few disposable baby diapers. I use cloth mostly to diaper my babies . We also don't use a dryer! We hang all our laundry to dry.
With you on a lot of these! Although I love baking :) I also stopped buying earbuds/Q-tips with a plastic stick and switched to bamboo (I live in NL too, and Kruidvat sell them :) ), stopped buying washing-up sponges and use micro-fiber cloths instead (going to look out for one of those wash-bags!), and the main thing, buying only the food I need rather than buying in bulk and ending up wasting it. I realise that last is a luxury - I'm fortunate to have a fantastic fruit & veg market nearby so I don't have to buy from the supermarket - but it makes a lot of difference.
I'm the total opposite on that last point. I love baking and don't mind the mess. But I used to go through sooo much parchment paper because I do not like destroying my baking sheets with stuck on food and scrubbing. I invested in silicon baking sheets and I love them! Saves us time in cleaning, food just wipes right off, and saves us money on parchment paper. Totally worth it. (Also silicon cupcake cups. Mine are heart shaped ❤)

I used to think I'd never stop buying books, but I'm almost 100% digital now. It's 2am and want a new book? You can get it. Digital library books are automatically returned, so no late fees. And most of my reading is on the busride to and from work, so why lug a heavy book when I can read on my phone, which I carry anyway. And I can read at night. I've never found a booklight I like. Seen a movie based on a book? Start reading the book on your way home. Going on a trip? Load a bunch of books onto your phone.
I mostly read on my ereader as it allows me to read while lying down, haha! But I still really love collecting beautiful copies of classics and favourites 😄

I don't have access to a washer and dryer in my apartment so I have to use shared washer and dryer in my building (Although our dryer is currently broken) or go to a laundry mat and I couldn't imagine bringing a cloth pad to either.
The one thing I don't see myself doing is not buying cds/dvds. I like collecting them, my laptop plays them, and I'm not very fond of having media only digitally.
So many great tips! I do agree with buying books and I also love using physical notebooks. I don't really like taking notes digitally and will not really use my notes if they are written on a computer. However, I invested in fountain pens a few years ago. They produce less waste as I just refill them and if taken care of they will end up being less expensive than normal pens as well as me being able to choose the colour of the inks. I do recommend that for a more sustainable alternative to pens that stop working quickly or that just break.

I started buying everyday jewelry on trips when I was in Amsterdam. It was my favorite city on the trip, and I still have the earrings 5+years on. I never thought that my buying items I use every day as souvenirs as a form of reducing or buying less, but you're right!

I wasn't aware people used makeup wipes as dailies until now, I think. Same way I wouldn't expect people to use panty liners as a daily item, but rather for when your period is soon but might be a little early, or if you have a yeast infection and you're trying to avoid stains getting through your trousers.
Il Al some people actually do wear panty liners daily. An older friend whose had kids wears them daily in case she sneezes (bladder control). You learn something new every day. Lol
I feel bad about using contact lenses but my eyesight is so bad now I can only wear glasses when sitting completely still otherwise I get motion sickness, so switching to glasses only isn’t an option for me, and without my contacts I’m legally blind and can’t get around safely on my own. Kind of sucks :(
If you need something to function, please don't feel guilty about using it. There are plenty of other areas you can make a difference if you wish (and plenty of people who don't bother at all 😉)
Some places now recycle contact lenses, maybe theres somewhere near you. If you wear them daily then using monthly ones would also help.
The only books I buy are cheesy paperbacks from the thrift store. They're light summer reading for when I'm at my camper. When I've read them all, they go back to the thrift store for someone else to enjoy. Other books, I only get from the library. It's just two blocks from my house.
These are all great! Some don’t work for me at the moment because of where I live and how sick I am. But when I’m able, I’ll definitely do more of them. 💜 I love collecting certain things, but I almost always buy used and thrift items for those collections, and most of them have a use beyond just sitting there. 😆

Agree with most, but I’m definitely someone that collects “outdated” media. Vinyl and dvds. I like have a physical copy of my things, and streaming facilities often don’t have what I want to watch. Plus, I can’t stand music streaming.

I love how you mentioned the exceptions to these habits, like enjoying the occasional shirt. I think it’s important when trying to buy less or eat less meat or give up anything in particular to accept that it’s okay to not be perfect 100% of the time. I’ve found by allowing the occasional pleasure, these habits are much more sustainable.

Can I just say THANK YOU for making real actual changes? I am so tired of seeing people say they're cutting down by buying bamboo knives and forks and steel straws for out and about when you already own reusable cutlery so just bring your usual knife, fork and spoon with you instead of adding more unnecessary things to your life for the sake of the enviroment.
When I go on a big trip I always save for a splurge item I've always wanted but never budgeted for. Tattoos, accessories, etc. I got my white gold and black pearl necklace that I wear every day in Vegas and I think about it all the time.

I am doing exactly the same (except water bottles because Paris'water is not really tasty). But I totally agree with the Eiffel tower goodies. It is really expensive and not on great quality. I will always prefer a physical book to e reader as well! I used to work at a book store, & you'd be surprised at how specific & niche magazines can be, for example, there was one that was specifically about pens, & a couple that were about watches. But, lol, it's not like you can find those super niche magazines just anywhere, so I understand why most prefer just going online.
I agree with everything I've heard up to this point! Aside from emergencies, I have stopped using disposable menstrual products. In fact, I only still use disposable stuff because I'm working on getting more of the reusable products to meet my needs and frankly...the reusable stuff may be a one-time purchase, but it's a big one. I have to save up money, but I do still have disposable products leftover from before I switched.
Also, as for the choice to not upgrade cameras/phones or other technology, a really great option there is if you do wish to upgrade--say, a new camera has a function your old one doesn't--is to exchange or sell items to places that refurbish. That way, if someone wants to get a camera, they may be able to buy your old one for a reduced price. Same goes for phones, and with phones, if you exchange a working one for the new model, there's usually a discount, and the data transfer is often easier and assisted.
Both my sister and I currently wear contacts right now and the brands we use actually come in completely recyclable packaging! The contacts themselves might not be recyclable but the boxes and individual packaging can definitely be recycled, as can the bottle of contact solution.
I get into all kinds of kitchen efficiency like how I grow foods in my garden using old produce that I purchase that I don't want to eat when they've gotten all old and rooty like potatoes, celery, sweet potatoes, and many more items you can plant in the garden straight from the fridge or pantry. Learning to mend and darn old clothing has been great to keep fast fashion or second hand clothing in wearable shape so I don't have to buy more clothing. Otherwise following most of your tips as well.
Can you do an updated self hair cut video? We have similar hair when I straighten it. (I have curly hair, but when I straighten it it seems we have the same thickness.) But I like having a "V" shape in the back that I cannot figure out how to maintain by myself! It seems like there would be a logical way to figure it out, but I'm just too nervous to try it myself. lol
You’re very interesting to listen to and you have a very pretty style :) the wastefulness of contacts isnt something i had thought about but it definitely curbs my desire to buy any. The cost was already stopping me from seriously considering it but this argument reinforces my opinion. Thank you!

I personally think it’s okay to buy CDs from thrift stores/charity shops/secondhand places. because then you’re not contributing to new waste. A big thing that I like is to buy things like games and puzzles and other things from these shops and then giving them back when i’ve sort of had my fun with them. living that circular economy lifestyle!
It's always your personal choice! Like for me, cd's are a bit waste of space, since I will listen to music with my laptop anyways and I don't have a cd player. But then again, I have tons of books that I could replace with Kindle, but I prefer physical copies over Kindle.

Hello Lucy a good video you’ve done as I think pretty much the same as you when it come to not buying things that you don’t need and it’s a case of being kind of minimalistic so it reduces costs also prevents house cluttering and you have a better idea of what you’ve got in house and it helps oneself to avoid being frivolous so that’s it so take care and cheerio

I do agree with every of your points but... cds I can not stop buying : you can actually not find everything online (I have troubled with some artists online) and I've noticed the is no big diversity in services like Spotify (also many artists struggle to make money, so I'll buy their cds, go to their concerts and even maybe buy some merch sometimes)
Love this. I have been trying to do more reusable things like napkins and when I pack my lunches only using reusable containers and no plastic bags. I need to find a supplement for the plastic bags I freeze the bagels that I buy in bulk for breakfast.

Here in the UK Boots Opticians have recycling scheme for soft contacts and their packaging; maybe other countries have similar schemes? I've been using reusable saintry products and makeup wipes for a few years now and as well as them saving me money I prefer them to disposables.

I love my microfiber washcloth as a makeup remover! And I love my diva cup!! I recently became extremely allergic to pads and tampons. Even the organic ones I was allergic so the diva cup was a period saver! Plus I like that I'm reducing my carbon footprint!!!
I buy school supplies in August when the prices are ridiculously low because we use a lot of pens, pencils, paper, markers, scissors, glue, etc.. I spend maybe $20 a year and we can go creative art fun making mad all year, me and my grandson.
I used to love Wild Child!!! 🤣A top tip for those who do like baking - reusable silicone cupcake cases, or the silicone cupcake trays that don't need cases, are amazing if you want to create less waste whilst baking! 🍰

As far as not buying upgrades I think I have something that takes the cake.
I remember when I bought my first mp3 player, I hardly had any money then and it was on a trip because I think my CD player broke on that trip or I was just tempted or something and this purchase was in 2005. And as you probably guessed, I still use it. The space on it is crazy limited with 256 MB but all buttons work like new, the sound is just like new, and the display has only a teeny hairline scratch. I don't know how many earphones it has been in a relationship with over the years but the quality of this thing kind of blows me away. Do I kind of wish it would break so it feels okay to upgrade? Yes a little bit but it's a friend at this point. Soon I can name it something like old Betty or Harold or something and I doubt any new one will have this kind of battery life if it needs to power more features and one AAA battery lasts me so many hours.
One thing you SHOULD upgrade regularly though is quality shoes with good arch support because your health is just super connected to feet and posture and I ruined my body pretty severely especially knees and lower back from wearing one pair of shoes year round for like 4 years just out of stubborn.

Loved this video! I do use glasses everyday but I also have monthly eye contacts as I exercise more than 3 times/week and wearing glasses makes me very nervous about injuring myself, specially when I do mountain bike.
I also use the monthly contacts, because at my level of myopia (-12.5 dioptres) glasses actually make other stuff appear smaller, and it's all kinds of frustrating. Though I intend to get a laser correction surgery a few years down the line, so hopefully then I'll be able to say goodbye to both the glasses and the contact lenses. :D
Have you found a solution for air travel with the safety razor? They tend to not be allowed on board when travelling with only hand luggage
There was a disposable razor in a goodie bag I received a while back, I've been using that for travel. Although usually when I travel with hand luggage only it's for short trips when I don't bother with shaving at all 😜
Ooh! Lucy, do you have any interest in making your own pantiners, sandwich bags and lunchbox? If you do, PUL fabric is reusable, water resistant and food safe; I have made several reusable items with it. You can also make your own beeswax wraps. If you are interested in taking on those tasks, I would absolutely love to see a video or mi I series about making your own reusable items!
Hair/Body care products! I would just buy shampoos and conditioners looking for something "perfect" without using what I already had, especially in an attempt to find something cheap that worked well. Now I just buy what I want to use (instead of something "more affordable") and use that
I have been trying to live low waste as well. Makeup is a struggle for me still (I just bought the Besame Sleeping Beauty Collection, lol) but it has made me more conscious about what I buy and when I buy things. I have to remind myself to only buy things when I’m out and need them. But other places I have done good in. I always use a reusable water bottle and I just bought my son a new lunchbox from Planetlunch. It’s really cool medal lunch tray with a lid. I don’t use plastic bags for him anymore. I also got one for myself 😁 It has helped reduce the amount of processed food we eat as well.
Instead of souvenirs, I go to the local thrift shops or flea market s and like you get stuff I can use in their style.
I like to donate a lot of my extra items. I feel like if I had more clothing and makeup things that came my way I would probably donate them to a woman's shelter so that they get used and so other women could feel good! As far as books go, I understand the feeling of having a flood of books constantly, I tend to buy used ones, because it's a little bit cheaper but it also reduces a carbon footprint, and books that I am no longer loving for one reason or another always get donated to our local library, or there are these little free library book boxes that you can stock with books. I don't white buy magazines anymore, there's two though that I really love, that I'll read periodically and those usually get donated to the local library or to those free boxes as well. I feel like there are plenty of Institutions that need reading material, especially reading material that is in good shape and possibly newer. It's a good chance to give to others when you are given so many extra things.

Seems like the takeaway is for us to stop buying things we don't use, things we don't enjoy, and replace disposable items with reusable ones wherever possible! Like you, books bring me enough joy to be worth the clutter of keeping them about, but trashy souvenirs do not and I can only use one notebook at a time! My other I'm working on is only buying craft supplies when I have a particular project in mind for them and can start it within a week instead of just hoarding pretty materials and forgetting I have them
What is the bag you use to wash your microfiber cloths? I didn't catch it. We have a washing machine filter, but it's not really good enough.

If you are for reducing plastic waste I would love to see you try BITE or a brand like them. They are a waste free toothpaste brand that has capsules that you bite down on and brush with water! It seems so cool!
Honestly, I'm a bit terrified of all the "alternative" toothpastes. Oral hygiene and health is not something I really want to experiment with 😅 They do sound really cool though!
