    Another great episode. We towed our 3.3m dinghy only once. Just for 30 mins going from a harbour to a marina. It just felt and sounded so wrong. Now we always put it on the davits no matter what.

    I noticed today watching your video your dark green hull is starting to fade. When HC’s made their vessels they did not skimp on gel coat. To get the color back to the point that you don’t see the fading you may want to do the following.
    With an orbital sander sand a test patch of the hull with 1200 grit wet/dry sand paper using a widex bottle filled with water spaying as you sand. Be careful not to get an electrical shock . You will end up finishing the test patch with 2000 grit paper and then a mild compound with a buffing machine. This should get you into new gelcoat and bring back the shine. If this is not gelcoat and it is paint this method will still work. This will help elevate the huge burden on a new paint job. Good luck !

      Thanks for that Todd. I will try it.I've been gradually getting more extreme with it. Last haul out I used the really course grinding paste, then down through the grades, got it looking great but the chalkyness is back within 6 months. Nothing to loose with going harder, if it doesn't work I'm going to paint anyway. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Bad luck about the dinghy, but we all make the odd mistake; unfortunately some are more expensive than others. I hope you guys were in a position to enjoy last night’s spectacular lightning and thunder show; we’re currently holidaying on the south coast of Menorca and watched it roll in from the west and at one stage it seemed to encompass the whole of the Balearics..! You’ll love Menorca when you get here; we chartered here last September and it’s wonderful. I can recommend Cala Trebaluger on the south coast and Illa de’n Colum on the east (past Mahon); the first is good for the prevailing N/NE, and the second if you get a southerly blow.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 года назад

      yes we had a front row seat in Son Saura (SW Menorca) last night, lots of yachts dragging anchor! we were fine thankfully. We've moving towards Mahon so will drop in on Trebaluger, thanks for the tip.

      Sailing Fair Isle If you plan to overnight in Trebaluger, tuck in on the E side of the Cala; you’ll get less reflected swell there and a more settled ride.

    To save face or avoid riding pillion, you will have to think about attaching an alert device to some priority equipment.
    There are 45 quid Bluetooth wristbands that alert with the coordinates at the point the Bluetooth tether breaks. But a phone or tablet must always be running even offshore and loud enough to be heard....perhaps also linked to a speaker.
    Failing that you could use a DSC device....but I've only found water triggered ones. It would be great if a device sent a DSC alarm and location when it lost a Bluetooth contact.
    But I haven't found one.
    You could just use another piece of string.
    I have a feeling you won't let it happen again anyway though.

  • @allynonderdonk7577
    @allynonderdonk7577 4 года назад +2

    To keep from having another dinghy float off....put on a DOUBLE PAINTER. Two lines, potentially to different points of attachment depending on your judgement on the durability of the attachment points. You must be getting an aluminum dinghy or an OC....Though honestly the Whaly is what I intend to get, as it is close to unsinkable and not as hot as they aluminum ones.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 года назад +1

      Yes I agree the Whaly might be a good hard wearing tender & you could have two painters. But it would be a mistake to plan on towing a dinghy with the sort of sailing we're planning. Dinghys get up to all sorts of mischief when you tow them! The Whaly is a whopping 72kg's as against 24kg's for the True kit and we can stow it in a bag in the sail locker for ocean crossings.

    • @allynonderdonk7577
      @allynonderdonk7577 4 года назад +4

      @@svfairisle Yes the Whaly is a whopper isn't it. It is at lease 15-20 kilos more than an equivalent hypalon dinghy. Also the Whaly can't take bigger motors like the inflatables. The nice thing is that it will last five times longer than an inflatable. I'm not crossing oceans so I don't mind really. Though even when floating off the end of the boat I always have two lines on mine. Also two attachment points. One line is longer and secured to a less capable area on the dinghy. That way if it rips out of the attachment point on one line, it still has the other. I also have a wire that goes along one line as an alarm circuit.

    On no just started this and we made the same mistake...we had no davits so hauled our old fashioned inflatable dingy aboard for crossings but it was such a pain sooooo....one day we said oh it's not so far and the winds should be fime and halfway there an enormous rogue wave crashed down took our dingy under and it never popped up so never to be seen again....sigh and such a hassle to get a new dingy when cruising. We were in Mexico headed south to Belize, Guatemala and the Bay Islands so impossible to order and get delivery..just an impossibility. THat is the difference between the Med, the Eastern Carribean with tons of boat services and the western Caribbean. Not even any marinas south of around Isla. Muheres , MX just nothing. NO boat services at all. But on the good side except at Isla Mueres you rarely have other boats, there are many deserted bays, islands, etc all along the way south. GLorious for that . We had been sailing a long long time many years on different boats of ours so losing a dingy is not such a schoolboy error at all. Humiliatingly embarassing though bec so preventable. WE hauled it aboard grudgingly everafterward. One of the biggest pains in our cruising life.

    The funniest lost (or more correctly destroyed) dinghy story I’ve heard was a yacht that anchored off the North West Coast of Australia. They rowed their dinghy into the beach and went for a long walk. In their absence a large saltwater crocodile hadn’t appreciated the invader on the beach and proceeded to destroy the dinghy. They apparently spent some time on the beach until a passing yacht saw them and took them back to the boat. Apparently swimming back to the yacht with a large and very territorial saltie didn’t appeal.

    Is there a reason why you would not attach the dinghy with a carabiner on the dinghy? The videos I have seen all show a very secure fastener from the boat, yet the painter, whether bridled or not, is attached via knots.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 года назад +1

      Only really because having a carabiner on the end of the painter would end up being a PITA. Might be fine attaching to the boat, but tying to a dock? throwing to someone? Wouldn't have help us either, it was the bridle on the dinghy that broke. I'm guessing chaffed through. The attachment points on the boat may have come away but I know they're stronger than you might think as I've had a dinghy flip before and the drag bent the rail it was attached to rather than pull the eye off the dinghy!

      That's the great thing about the sea, with very few exceptions it can't be made private. You can anchor where ever it is safe to do so and you are not impinging on navigation or military or industrial areas like harbours. Rivers estuaries can have limitations also and there can be local laws. Like in the Balearics for instance it is forbidden to anchor on the sea grass. Apart from that you're good!

In the drone shot of Fair Isle in the video you can see the boat is over the sea grass, but the anchor was in the sand. The chain must not be touching it either. I always dive on the anchor and have a good look.Sometimes it can be difficult in busy anchorages annd even though you anchor in sand a wind shift may put your chain on the grass. The sea grass inspectors have glass bottomed buckets that they look with and they are very thorough. The boat in the video that got moved on in Palma Nova must have been just touching the grass. The inspector looked for at least 15 mins before asking him to move. The inspectors have always been very friendly to us. 26 euros a night. Less for a smaller boat

    It seems you are anchoring on the posidonia, minute 11:05. If this is so, you should avoid it.

      No, we drifted over the top but the chain wasn't touching. In fact the inspector had a good look and said we weren't touching. We did move over that evening though when other boats had gone to make sure.

    It’s good to see that sailor girls in their forties can look as good in underwater skimpy bikini shots as the twenty somethings. Nice camera work, btw. 🙂

      judyaslett2 Thanks for taking my comment the right way Judy. 🙂 My wife and I were watching together like usual and like you she looks amazing and like Steve I think it’s great and I said, ‘You’ll look that good when I’m filming you diving on the anchor, scrubbing the bottom and clearing the propeller.’ I didn’t get the smile I was expecting. 😕

      Ah. I’m with your wife on that one. Swimming with the fishes is what I do. Scrubbing the hull is not. Ever. Just not my thing

    Everyone should be wearing a mask when getting a haircut. The virus hasn't gone completely. You are letting your guard down.

      @ Because they hardly have a crowd surrounding them. Ever noticed most people are killed in crowded area's? The sea is not exactly crowded, is it? You could think a bit more practical.

    we lost our dingy 3 times in the adriatic and managed to recover it every time. Last time she wandered off in the Boka Bay of Kotor, we decided to rename her to Poco Loco, a name that were found very suitable. 😊

      We are thinking of stopping off in Montenegro on the way up to Venice, we may have to leave the boat somewhere for a week, whats the cost of marinas like there? Love your paintings by the way.

    Very surprised to see no masks worn during the hair cut... this is not allowed in BC Canada.

    Why is it that, when you visit all these beautiful places outside the UK, you almost always end up dealing with Brits. What is wrong with visiting a Spanish barber or hairdresser when in Spain? Or dealing with a Spanish chandler when in Spain? Or making friends with Spanish sailors? Or Italian sailors when you reach Italy? Is there something inferior about the Spanish? Or something superior about the British? I am sorry but, whilst your channel is extremely interesting, this aspect of it irritates the sh*t out of me and I say that as British citizen who has lived in 13 countries and worked in 25 (as diverse as the Netherlands (not "Holland"), Spain, Libya and Nigeria). You will enjoy your tour of the world more if you can just leave Britain behind.

    You didn’t think of a nesting dinghy? I’d never heard of them until I watched Matt & Amy RUclips channel “Sailing Florence Around the World.” A bit more info at sailwiththeflo.wordpress.com/our-dinghy/

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 года назад +1

      Yes we've seen it on Sailing Florence (one of our favourite channels) I love the idea, especially being able to stick a mast on and sail it. But I know from experience that rigid dinghys, nesting or not, arn't very stable. In fact they're bloody tippy! So I just don't think they are suitable as a yacht tender when sometimes you have to use it in bad conditions.
