Waystar Royco gets raided by FBI (Episode Ending) | Succession Season 3, Episode 3

  • Logan tries to wiggle his way out of the DOJ investigation that's been coming, but he fails, and the FBI winds up pounding on the doors of Waystar HQ until Logan can do nothing but capitulate.
While Tom is in the middle of a pitch to advertisers, the building gets raided by FBI.
Gerri is taking the idea of being CEO a tiny bit more seriously than some may have anticipated. You can also see that she's more willing to play it straight with Logan than she has been in the past - for instance, she has no patience left for his "tell them to f*** off" attitude about federal law enforcement. "This is a show of resolve," she tells him. There is nothing they can do but open the doors. On the one hand, you could argue that Gerri standing for the idea of submitting to a perfectly meritorious FBI investigation is less evil than if she had suggested that they, for instance, bribe somebody. But that's not why she's doing it, and there's nothing good for Gerri - nothing - in getting deeper and deeper into running Waystar.

There is a theory I’ve seen that says Tom is an informant. There’s a scene earlier in the episode where Tom makes a call to an attorney after he tests both Logan and Shiv about him being the scapegoat for everything, and both Logan and Shiv give no real assurances that he’ll be protected or that they care. Since the raid happens after that, the theory goes that Tom + Kendall might have been enough for the DOJ to execute a search warrant.

You don't make more believable as a mogul than Logan Roy played by Brian Cox. Cinema is make believe, you're supposed to believe said character is a very powerful man, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and rarely does it work as well as with the Roys. When I watch it, I believe I'm following some of the wealthiest persons on earth, because the writing, the acting, the directing, the music (Nicholas Britell reaaaaaaaaally helps ^^;), everything is grandiose. Logan is closer to a roman emperor than anything else.

Well remember, Logan might be the one making decisions but it's Gerri who is the one taking responsibility for them. Ultimately she would be the one liable for playing hardball with armed FBI agents. So she's essentially fighting for her life in this scene. She needs to somehow get it through to Logan that there aren't any other moves left. That's what fuels her anger and her confidence and ultimately allows her to find the right sequence of words to make the old guy get it.

This scene captured genuine fear: Geri mad, Logan knowing there was no way out, Roman's silent, and then finally uttering the words you never thought you would hear Logan speak, "cooperate". So big, so vital, so awesome.

My absolute favorite thing about this scene is the dramatic, sweeping build of the new music in the credits, until it fades into a softer simple piano version of the main title theme. It's like Nicholas Britell is reminding us what we're watching, what's really happening, the tragic grandeur of all the preceding events leading to one simple reality: succession. This titan of industry is eventually going down, everybody's gunning for his throne, and the stakes are rising. It's a mixture of inevitability and challenge. Love it

This show is so phenomenally detailed. We all expected Logan to throw some tirade and antagonize the FBI to the bitter end, but instead we see him slowly, painfully realize he's been cornered and concede defeat. Logan may be a brute, but in a true crisis he stops, thinks, and acts in the best way to minimize damage. It's what made him such an effective CEO.
