Colonel Tavington is based on the real life Banastre Tarleton. After he had earned his unsavory reputation; the colonial Calvary adopted a new battle cry when charging the enemy. This was "Tarleton's quarter!" Which really meant no quarter was to be given! Tavington was a fearless man unfettered by decency or mercy. Jason Issacs, IMO a grossly underrated actor, is brilliant as the not so fictional Colonel Tavington in this film. The late great Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson are also wonderful in their respective roles.
Incidentally Simmerson, from the Richard Sharpe books, is a cousin of Tarleton's. In the 'Sharpe' universe it is undoubtedly Tarleton, at 'Horse Guards' who saves Sir Henry's neck. This is after the latter has lost the King's Colors. The always excellent René Auberjonois plays the slain Reverend Oliver in the Patriot 2000 film. Auberjonois, now deceased, was descended from Marshal Murat and Caroline Bonaparte.
Please keep making these great videos. Might I, rather boldly, suggest the following possible subjects.
    I) Sir Henry Simmerson from the Sharpe series.
    II) Obadiah Hakeswill ibid
III) Midshipman Jack Simpson from Hornblower
IV) Elkanah Bent from North and South tv series trilogy
    V) General Thade from Planet of the Apes (2001)
Thank you and keep up your sterling work!

A minor correction, while Tavington is inspired (loosely) by the historical figure of Tarleton, much of what Tavington does in the film would be considered inexcusable and was far worse than his historical counterpart. The Patriot puts Tavington far more closely to the actions of the Eastern Front in the Second World War than the American Revolution. There were specific codes of conduct and strict regulation placed on the British throughout the American Revolution due to their mentality of reintegration of the Colonies once the war was completed.

This villain is one awful, but amazing villain. He's someone we all hate, but love. Jason Issacs played the villain with true heart and amazement. Soldiers like him should be tried in court and punished with prison time or death. I hope to see a video on the Balto and the Alpha and Omega villains.

Col. Tavington secretly survived, returned to England, then went undercover as a teacher at Hogwarts and had a son…

When talking to the lone survivor of 'the Ghost' or Mel's tomahawk rampage I was always intrigued by Tavington genuinely telling the young soldier to rest easy and save his strength while recalling the traumatizing event. While a fierce enemy he also seems to be a soldier you'd be glad to have on your side. I also liked the touch of Tavington draining his glass of booze after seeing the supply ship go up in flames like "Oh boy....I'm gonna hear about this." Yes sadistic, but Isaacs' portrayal also humanized the stereotypical villain. Cornwallis at least in the movie realized the damage Tavington's ruthlessness was inflicting on a potential peace settlement and the colonies rejoining.

@@vectorman7140 Constance, Pearl, Frank Butterman, Howard Payne, Turbo and Tai Lung all have interesting backstories.
Frank Butterman turned evil because he and his wife lost the title for village of the year
Howard Payne turned evil cause he felt he wasn't paid enough money for his retirement
Tai Lung turned evil cause he wanted to be the Dragon Warrior
Turbo turned evil when he saw a game called Roadblasters getting all of the attention
Pearl turned evil when she was lost a dancing audition
And Constance became evil due to the bullying she received for her size. Before she became the house.

Oh man! I can't believe! The master of villains. Since a watched that movie a long time ago I really impressed with the performance of this actor and the history of this movie at all. Certainly he is a master villain. The cruelty and your freeze glimpse is freeking. I'm just a kid with 12 years old when I whatch this master piece of movie. This a great movie. The actor Mel Gibson and this Guy here bring a visceral fight, in this scenario of war! Take of the breaths... Thanks you for this great analysis for this character!

Just stumbled onto your channel today and find your interpretation of Tavington to be interesting. One thing I would say is that he was not a coward. Ruthless, violent and a killer, yes, but his leadership in battle and his personal enjoyment of close quarter combat would argue that he is anything but a coward.

That's what makes him such a compelling villain in the movie...he is the flipside to the hero....a man just as strong, and just as brave, as the protagonist. They even bear a physical resemblance, with the dark hair, blue eyes, etc. But Tavington is heartless and cold, while Martin is a decent man with a violent temper...they make absolutely IDEAL cinematic adversaries.

Honestly, you should really think about covering Lil' Ze from City of God at some point. One of the most rotten individuals I had ever seen portrayed in cinema, not to mention one of the more brutally realistic depictions of a real gangster. Probably on par with Tavington in terms of sheer cruelty, if not even more so.
