I love hearing about why you Bonsai because I’ve often asked myself that question. I do know that I’ve never tried growing things as I was a kid growing up and now that I’m 60, the last 2 to 3 years have been involved with Bonsai. It’s just amazing to me that I can take all the dirt out of the roots, put it in Bonsai soil and it doesn’t die!! It actually thrives! It’s also incredible when I can take a cutting, put it in soil, and it grows into a tree and then the shaping of everything by ramifications. It’s just unique to me and I love that it’s working for me. The only problem is I think I’ve caught the bug too much. At least my wife might think so by my 48 or so trees on our balcony! Hahahahahaaa thanks for sharing!!
Such a nice video--thank you! Loving trees more than most people... I totally relate. If those are your photos, they're really good! Getting the zoom and focus right for a lot of those is not easy.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, and grateful for other dendrophiles like us. Yes, all the photos shared in the video are mine, thank you. My secret to getting good bird photos was spending a lot of time birding, and taking loads of photos.
Bonsai is an outlet for me after a hard days work. It's also my chance to try and be artistic. I have never been artistic in my life but always wanted to find something i could do that didnt look like a 4 year old had done it :)
Yep, it's also a nice diversion from work for me as well. I have an art professor friend who likes to emphasize to others that art is a skill that can be learned. I agree - now that I've gone through the bonsai creation process a few times, I feel like I'm finally starting to 'get it' (at least well enough that I like the trees I've created, which is my measure of success). The hundreds of hours of bonsai RUclips videos that I've watched and books have also helped.
yep, I agree, bonsai is a great way to practice patience - hopefully that patience is transferring to other aspects of my life? I'm not too into tropicals...until winter comes, and then I'm glad I have a few indoor trees!
I too grew up with Ponderosa Pines on our five acre forested land. I was constantly transplanting trees, but never thought about planting them in pots. Isn’t it great how a five year old inspired a RUclips video? Bonsai is a great creative outlet.
Yeah, kids are great; I'm enjoying experiencing 'kid life' again, this time as an adult looking in. They certainly influence me just as much as I influence them.
Enjoyed your thoughts on "Why Do I Bonsai"...I'm sure everyone has their own version but how often do we take that introspective thought process to determine why we do what we do? For me, like you, I really enjoy watching things grow and evolve...Enjoyed your thoughts...Thanks for sharing...
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching. In recent years I've become more introspective about why I do what I do. It's perhaps not too important to ask the "why?" behind our hobbies, but it can be valuable in other aspects of our lives.
I practice the ancient art of bonsai so that I can assert my dominance over trees, and bend nature to my will. Just kidding. Its definitely about a creative outlet, but one with real challenges presented. Not like painting or drawing or photography. We're dealing with living subjects. I used to call it extreme gardening, because it's gardening, but with the difficulty level cranked up to 11, if you're doing it right and really trying to achieve something special.
Ha! I agree - it seems challenging to do it well - say to get a tree accepted into a competitive show. But I think bonsai can also be fairly simple, as simple as one really wants to make it. I mainly grow trees for myself - my definition of success is simply if I enjoy the trees I'm creating.

Love it when our kid’s questions give us the opportunity to stop and take a different perspective.
Amen, I think our adult brains can get kind of inflexible. Kids can help us see things differently.
Stress relief is my reasoning for bonsai...It also teaches me patience.. Since all of tree's are tropical, it's a year round hobby / passion..🌴🌳🌲🌵

I don’t really draw anymore either. You were better than me at it anyway.
Nah, I always thought you were the better artist.
