coming to you a bit late on this one. I am already back from florida, and it was so great. silly me, I forgot my vlog camera with the memory card inside the car when we parked for the airport. So during the trip, I didn't get to vlog with the camera OR work on this video until I came back.
But it was a nice accident that allowed me to unplug & enjoy our time at Tyler's parents' home. It was so nice and wholesome; I felt so sad to say goodbye.
For the last few days I've been back in NY, I've been taking it easy and embracing the ~slow, unproductive~ feeling that I know I'll long for so much when I am buried under work again this fall. I tell myself to not feel guilty that I'd spend 4.5 hours watching Sherlock ^_^ because hey, I'm gonna watch it all sometime- whether it's now all at once- or spread out over time. now that I'm on break, it's as good as time as any to just.. enjoy peace, art, and tv.
And wow- Sherlock. I've heard so much about it for years & years, saw plenty of gifs on tumblr lol, & it's still not what I expected. I really enjoy it!! but wow, never have I needed subtitles this much. They talk SO fast, everything they say is so intricate (often mumbled) and I'm the type that just NEEDS to hear/see everything when I watch tv/movies, so I can hardly multitask when I watch Sherlock.
It was really nice free sketching yesterday with simple pen & paper while watching, something I haven't done for fun in YEARS. not since high school, honestly. and it's such a shame!
Tyler was showing me his high school art at his parents' house, & I honestly envied that passion. And to this day I often envy those who spend so much time drawing for fun, investing in the art of making and less focused on the 'destination' of the finished product. and it's like, why don't I do it?
part in fear that what I wouldn't like what I make, deeming the time spent a waste, or that I'm too busy, that there are more demanding things, or that I'm so drained from artschool, that everything remotely creative has been for the sake of the assignment and not expression.
in life there are so many people capable of certain things, but somehow don't give themselves permission to just 'do' things, to enjoy them, to try. whether it's held back from fear, laziness, or the assumption we aren't good enough....
it's normal to hear "I could do that, it's not even hard". but a majority of the time there's a stark difference between those who can do something, and those who actually DO them.
if there's things you've been keeping on your back burner, this is the time! try it out, despite how busy or hectic things are. there is always time to be made, as long as we are trying to live our best life.
showing up is the hardest part.
tell me what you've been up to lately, if there are hobbies you've been enjoying or you've been wanting to try. I always read each and every comment, and I appreciate them so much. I hope you never feel that when you type out a comment, you're sending them into a void that may never be seen.
I'd like to play with the paint-pouring stuff I've been seeing in craft stores, where you splash around runny paint on a canvas and tilt it all sorts of directions until you like what you see!
Of course, so much more. about the online shop, I hope to launch it within 2 weeks. starting simple, so it should be able to happen

Tbh after a long time watching annabelle, I learned how to save up, love discounts and shop in thrift more 😂
I've been collecting oddly shaped bottles and jars and painting them different shades of sea glass colours with my glass paints... so satisfying mixing different shades of greens, blues, yellows and pinks... I'm going to be hanging all of them in front of my studio window. Something that I've always wanted to do is make a pinhole camera, but have been too afraid of wasting rolls of film by messing it all up. RUclips has awesome tutorials on how to do it though!! xx

I started watching your videos because I was living vicariously through your journey as an art major! I always loved art but as time flew by and other priorities came into place, it became a thing of the past. Currently, however I’m studying abroad in Korea and I decided to take Watercolor techniques as one of my free electives- and I LOVE it. I’ve forgotten how much I love the process Of just experimenting and immersing myself into it. The barriers to jumping back into art even as a hobby has been me questioning whether or not I’m good enough or if it’ll be a waste of time. I totally agree that showing up is the hardest part, but I’m so glad I chose to return to it on a whim.

it’s unusually cold this summer where i live and i’ve been feeling weird because of that, it seems like it’s almost autumn... and as it is constantly raining, i’ve been staying at home a lot and started making things out of clay. i really enjoy the process, but i feel uneasy about showing the things i made to anyone because i don’t think they look good enough
Ahhhh! I'm feeling that description letter sooo much!! Finals ended and I'm free from art school for 2 weeks. Awesome right? A little vacation! Then, the moment I sat down to draw for fun... i stopped myself. I felt like i needed to do something Productive. That any use of my time that can't be monetized or used for personal/academic advancement was worthless. I felt drowned by guilt. "Why aren't you learning?" "You should stay ahead!".
It left me a bit tired of everything, so I'm taking it easy now. Your video was a breath of fresh air that I very much needed. I will work hard on letting myself do things because i like them. Because i deserve the free time, and the enjoyment. Thank you Annabelle :)

I have been taking up art journaling lately as my own creative outlet. Partly I like just keeping scraps of papers or magazines and making something cool out of them but it's really been calming me down lately and helping with my anxiety. Glad you had a nice trip and got the chance to unplug:)

Awesome sewing creations! I like that you're giving yourself permission to be lazy/unproductive - one thing looking back toward my younger days I wish I had felt less guilty/ashamed during my unproductive phases. Like there was a part of me that feared falling into that hole to never emerge. What you described about not doing stuff sounds like perfectionism. I've been working on that...practicing the enjoyment of doing without a vision of what-it-should-look-or-feel-like. One example is that I'm clumsy/super-unathletic and always avoided exercise because I never look like how others do exercising. It's that "I can't do this that well, so why bother" attitude. With my determination to override perfectionistic tendencies I've been working out daily, just ten minutes, and like I expected, it doesn't look pretty. But! it's been so good for my spirit and body, and I feel wonderful that I'm evolving away from perfectionism that holds me back.
so good to hear that your spirit and body have been feeling good, that's so much what it's about for me too! working out impacts my mental state so much, can't express enough how much i need those endorphins in order to effectively carry out other tasks/challenges in my life. and i love what you say about 'evolving away from perfectionism', I still have some tendencies i wish i could shake. need to combat the scarcity mindset, where I always belittle or underestimate myself!

Summer is a hard time for me, and although I know I'm not alone (summertime sadness is topping the charts again) I've been trying to entertain myself and be productive anyway. Then I watched a video that Rachel Nguyen posted, and she expressed how often she unknowingly escapes from her emotions and ultimately her life; I guess I've just found it hard to relax recently. watching your videos is always such a calming activity for me, it's almost like cleansing. i watched sherlock and i had a *phase* where i loved it so much. i think i kinda fell out of it, but seeing you talk about it kind of makes me miss it. sherlock & doctor who were my favourite shows and i think i'd cry if i rewatched them. there are certain memories attached to activities, right? like, i could be watching the pilot episode of doctor who but instead remember what i was doing in school at the time, what books i'd been reading that week. i don't explain myself well enough. these are the limitations of being a nonnative speaker; can't speak your own language fluently but your english isn't perfect either. anyways, thank you for the time you spent on this video! (side note: the colours are always so pretty) i always put your videos on my watch later playlist because i need to save it for the evening while im unwinding. i sort of wish you could be someone else so you could experience stumbling upon a video by catcreature and feel the calm that you bring to so many of us with this channel. also wishing you the best for your online shop and all your future endeavours :]. Hey Annabelle! A great way to make a pin cushion is to dry out coffee grounds completely and then tightly pack them in fabric. You can take the left over cardboard from packaging and glue matching fabric to create a flat bottom. The fine particle of the grounds helps sharpen your pins and keep them from falling out as you move the cushion around!

My experience was on the complete other end of this spectrum, meeting my husbands parents on the second date, but all that matters is meeting them :) Also its good to see you so energized with your new sewing projects! I've always wanted to pursue art but it took me a different turn in college. When I watch your videos, it inspires me to work harder and give my best in life so that someday I'll have that strength to achieve my passion without having to be influenced by anybody. I have re-taught myself to sew over the last year and now it is my great love! I made the most incredible pair of wide-legged corduroy pants yesterday, they fit so well and it fills me with pride when I wear them because I made them myself!! Would love to see some sewing vlogs from you, it's so satisfying seeing what people are capable of!!!

Hey Annabelle! I'm in total agreement with you when you say that there's a clear difference between knowing you can do something and Actually doing it. I've had so many great ideas that I've left behind or pushed aside just because I got scared or lazy. I wish I wasn't like that and now I'm just trying to change my ways before my passion and love for a project dies out. Its difficult, but Im managing. :) Currently, Im embroidering day and night!! Seeing a new video from you always brightens my day! I've recently been getting back into art after falling out with it for a few years. In the past, I wanted to be an art major, but I always felt that I would never enjoy creating if I did it as homework, so I was afraid of pursuing it further and stopped creating as often as I once did. Like you said, I hit the road block and fear of what the end product would be and stopped enjoying the process Now that summer is here I've thankfully been getting back into art again and enjoying it much more than before! I just want to say thank you for sharing you hardships and triumphs with us, and keep on enjoying life and all its little pleasures!

I feel the same way you do whenever I see my friends draw, edit, make music for fun, to experiment without worrying for the outcome. I could never do that for worry if it will turn out well or not, but at the end, I think we all ended up having fun and experimenting with what we love the most unconsciously, in this case yours sewing atm♡♡

It always amaze how we end up doing similiar stuff whever I watch your videos, I am self teaching sewing too, but I'm doing bags, little pouches for earphones, etc. And it is so much fun, I don't have a sew machine but it helps a lot to know how much time it takes and value the others works, plus it is so much fun even if it doesn't turns out well♡

I'm glad to hear florida was such a hit! I hope you enjoy the rest of your holidays too! I've been working a lot recently, but have been having snippets of fun inbetween with friends which I'm very grateful for. I went to my very first sleepover this week as well and visited a new part of london and it was a wonderful experience. I'm also planning a major reset on things, primarily decluttering and reorganising my room. what better time to do it than summer? hopefully I can start tackling that tomorrow.

I always always love how refreshing and peaceful and just relaxing your videos are. Also, i'm thinking about it lately, how i've been wanting to do something but ended up not doing jist because i'm afraid people will judge for not being good enough and also because there are so much more people who is way better than me or if i put it out there will people appreciate it. this summer, i decided to practice my songwriting skills and getting into music more! i've always felt discouraged bc it seems like music is made only for success and not just for passion, so i'm kinda jumping out of my comfort zone and letting myself be vulnerable, its a nice breath of fresh air :))) i'm glad you had a good time in florida with tyler and his family!!

💛woo!! I would love to work with corduroy, but I haven't come across any fabrics like that with the small selection in my local shops. I would love to make cute overalls with corduroy though. so exciting to hear about your projects :-D

thank you daisy, i have had the most fun watching sherlock ^_^ i hope to do it again today while i finish up the sketch i started a few days ago. and yes, love the burnt orange, but more so I have been so obsessed with forest green. ever since I bought forest green wall paint for my dad last year (which I didn't get the time to paint for him, but I will this year!) now I'm super attracted to the color and I found myself buying a green mug, or nail polish.
and i can't wait for autumn! it's my favorite season. I wonder if it being my birthday-season has anything to do with that 😅hehe but seriously no, i think i just love the fleeting quality of nature in that time, and also the wonderful warm tones. also the hot cocoa, and chill breeze!

im a senior in high school now and my counsellor encouraged me to take our high school's ap art class after her seeing my bullet journal. over the summer we have been required to finish projects and fill up our sketchbook. While this gets me to create art and not feel like i am also wasting time, i feel more pressured with how the outcome will turn out. Another thing that has been bothering me creatively is my lack of passion to practice and play my saxophone. Even though I've been playing for several years, i give up practicing before I pick up my instrument in the fear that I wont improve. i know how ridiculous that sounds, but as you mentioned, the hardest part is really just starting and going at it. this feels like the part of the letter where I'll promise to do better and maybe set some goals, but I'm just hoping I take the time to experiment with my art and play with it more than anything.

I’ve just pushed myself to sketch again, but I realized I’m still very intimidated by a sketchbook, so instead, I’m starting with a drawing pad that has tear out sheets. hey friend! i went thrifting this past 4th of july and got 6 things with just $10!! ive been trying to put myself out of my comfort zone and face my fears this past week and it’s actually been working out for me
I really get what you mean about struggling to produce art solely for the purpose of making art for fun and for yourself. I've been busy with school but this summer I really want to try playing with designs and sculpting ceramics, maybe even start sewing?? :3 I',m going to take things one step at a time. thank you for sending us letters, annabelle. life has had its ups and downs for me recently, but generally, i feel very content. i think when one slows down, checks in on themselves every once in a while, we become more aware of our feelings and are able to keep them in track. ive been counting my blessings, being grateful for the little things i have. university starts in a month or so for me, and i hope i get to bring these feelings along with me. thank you for sticking around with us!!
